Interacting topological mirror excitonic insulator in one dimension

We introduce the topological mirror excitonic insulator as a new type of interacting topological crystalline phase in one dimension. Its mirror-symmetry-protected topological properties are driven by exciton physics, and it manifests in the quantized bulk polarization and half-charge modes on the boundary. And the bosonization analysis is performed to demonstrate its robustness against strong correlation effects in one dimension. Besides, we also show that Rashba nanowires and Dirac semimetal nanowires could provide ideal experimental platforms to realize this new topological mirror excitonic insulating state. Its experimental consequences, such as quantized tunneling conductance in the tunneling measurement, are also discussed.

Two-band model for magnetism and superconductivity in nickelates

The recently discovered superconductivity in Nd$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$NiO$_2$ provides a new opportunity for studying strongly correlated unconventional superconductivity. The single-hole Ni$^+$ ($3d^9$) configuration in the parent compound NdNiO$_2$ is similar to that of Cu$^{2+}$ in cuprates. We suggest that after doping, the intra-orbital spin-singlet and inter-orbital spin-triplet double-hole (doublon) configurations of Ni$^{2+}$ are competing, and we construct a two-band Hubbard model by including both the $3d_{x^2-y^2}$ and $3d_{xy}$-orbitals. The effective spin-orbital super-exchange model in the undoped case is a variant of the $SU(4)$ Kugel-Khomskii model augmented by symmetry breaking terms. Upon doping, the effective exchange interactions between spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ single-holes, spin-1 (triplet) doublons, and singlet doublons are derived. Possible superconducting pairing symmetries are classified in accordance to the $D_{4h}$ crystalline symmetry, and their connections to the superexchange interactions are analyzed.

Anomalous Quantum Oscillations of Interacting Electron-hole Gases in Inverted Type-II InAs/GaSb Quantum Wells

We report magneto-transport studies of InAs/GaSb bilayer quantum wells in a regime where the interlayer tunneling between the electron and hole gases is suppressed. When the chemical potential is tuned close to the charge neutrality point, we observe anomalous quantum oscillations that are inversely periodic in magnetic field and that have an extremely high frequency despite the highly insulating regime where they are observed. The seemingly contradictory coexistence of a high sheet resistance and high frequency quantum oscillations in the charge neutrality regime cannot be understood within the single-particle picture. We propose an interpretation that attributes our experimental observation to the Coulomb drag between the electron and hole gases, thus providing strong evidence of the significance of Coulomb interaction in this topological insulator.

Hexagonal warping effect to Majorana zero modes at ends of superconducting vortex line in doped 3D strong topological insulators

In a superconducting topological insulator, superconducting vortex line may trap 1-dimensional topological band with Majorana zero modes (MZMs) localized at its ends. In this work, we study the effect of hexagonal warping to the vortex phase transition. We carry out both analytical calculations based on a semiclassical formula and numerical calculations based on full quantum mechanics of Bogliubov de Gennes equation. We find that the hexagonal warping term enlarges the topological region of the vortex line as the chemical potential changes, and leads to the MZMs even in the absence of topological surface states.

Selective equal spin Andreev reflection at vortex core center in magnetic semiconductor-superconductor heterostructure

Sau, Lutchyn, Tewari and Das Sarma (SLTD) proposed a heterostructure consisting of a semiconducting thin film sandwiched between an s-wave superconductor and a magnetic insulator and showed possible Majorana zero mode. Here we study spin polarization of the vortex core states and spin selective Andreev reflection at the vortex center of the SLTD model. In the topological phase, the differential conductance at the vortex center contributed from the Andreev reflection, is spin selective and has a quantized value $(dI/dV)^{topo}_A =2e^2/h$ at zero bias. In the topological trivial phase, $(dI/dV)^{trivial}_A$ at the lowest quasiparticle energy of the vortex core is spin selective due to the spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Unlike in the topological phase, $(dI/dV)^{trivial}_A$ is suppressed in the Giaever limit and vanishes exactly at zero bias due to the quantum destruction interference.

Topological Larkin-Ovchinnikov phase and Majorana zero mode chain in bilayer superconducting topological insulator films

We theoretically study bilayer superconducting topological insulator film, in which superconductivity exists for both top and bottom surface states. We show that an in-plane magnetic field can drive the system into Larkin-Ovchinnikov (LO) phase, where electrons are paired with finite momenta. The LO phase is topologically non-trivial and characterized by a Z 2 topological invariant, leading to a Majorana zero mode chain along the edge perpendicular to in-plane magnetic fields.

Topological Charge/spin density Wave in InAs/GaSb Quantum Wells under an In-plane Magnetic Field

We study interaction effect of quantum spin Hall state in InAs/GaSb quantum wells under an in-plane magnetic field by using the self-consistent mean field theory. We construct a phase diagram as a function of intra-layer and inter-layer interactions, and identify two novel phases, a charge/spin density wave phase and an exciton condensate phase. The charge/spin density wave phase is topologically non-trivial with helical edge transport at the boundary, while the exciton condensate phase is topologically trivial. The Zeeman effect is strongly renormalized due to interaction in certain parameter regimes of the system, leading to a much smaller g-factor, which may stabilize the helical edge transport.

Theory for Spin Selective Andreev Reflection in Vortex Core of Topological Superconductor: Majorana Zero Modes on Spherical Surface and Application to Spin Polarized Scanning Tunneling Microscope Probe

Majorana zero modes (MZMs) have been predicted to exist in the topological insulator (TI)/superconductor (SC) heterostructure. Recent spin polarized scanning tunneling microscope (STM) experiment$^{1}$ has observed spin-polarization dependence of the zero bias differential tunneling conductance at the center of vortex core, which may be attributed to the spin selective Andreev reflection, a novel property of the MZMs theoretically predicted in 1-dimensional nanowire$^{2}$. Here we consider a helical electron system described by a Rashba spin orbit coupling Hamiltonian on a spherical surface with a s-wave superconducting pairing due to proximity effect. We examine in-gap excitations of a pair of vortices with one at the north pole and the other at the south pole. While the MZM is not a spin eigenstate, the spin wavefunction of the MZM at the center of the vortex core, r = 0, is parallel to the magnetic field, and the local Andreev reflection of the MZM is spin selective, namely occurs only when the STM tip has the spin polarization parallel to the magnetic field, similar to the case in 1-dimensional nanowire2. The total local differential tunneling conductance consists of the normal term proportional to the local density of states and an additional term arising from the Andreev reflection. We also discuss the finite size effect, for which the MZM at the north pole is hybridized with the MZM at the south pole. We apply our theory to examine the recently reported spin-polarized STM experiments and show good agreement with the experiments.

The effect of in-plane magnetic field and applied strain in quantum spin Hall systems: application to InAs/GaSb quantum wells

Motivated by the recent discovery of quantized spin Hall effect in InAs/GaSb quantum wells\cite{du2013}$^,$\cite{xu2014}, we theoretically study the effects of in-plane magnetic field and strain effect to the quantization of charge conductance by using Landauer-Butikker formalism. Our theory predicts a robustness of the conductance quantization against the magnetic field up to a very high field of 20 tesla. We use a disordered hopping term to model the strain and show that the strain may help the quantization of the conductance. Relevance to the experiments will be discussed.

Electric control of inverted gap and hybridization gap in type II InAs/GaSb quantum wells

The quantum spin Hall effect has been predicted theoretically and observed experimentally in InAs/GaSb quantum wells as a result of inverted band structures, for which electron bands in InAs layers are below heavy hole bands in GaSb layers in energy. The hybridization between electron bands and heavy hole bands leads to a hybridization gap away from k=0. A recent puzzling observation in experiments is that when the system is tuned to more inverted regime by a gate voltage (a larger inverted gap at k=0), the hybridization gap decreases. Motivated by this experiment, we explore the dependence of hybridization gap as a function of external electric fields based on the eight-band Kane model. We identify two regimes when varying electric fields: (1) both inverted and hybridization gaps increase and (2) inverted gap increases while hybridization gap decreases. Based on the effective model, we find that light-hole bands in GaSb layers play an important role in determining hybridization gap. In addition, a large external electric field can induce a strong Rashba splitting and also influence hybridization gap.

Observation of Majorana fermions with spin selective Andreev reflection in the vortex of topological superconductor

Majorana fermion (MF) whose antiparticle is itself has been predicted in condensed matter systems. Signatures of the MFs have been reported as zero energy modes in various systems. More definitive evidences are highly desired to verify the existence of the MF. Very recently, theory has predicted MFs to induce spin selective Andreev reflection (SSAR), a novel magnetic property which can be used to detect the MFs. Here we report the first observation of the SSAR from MFs inside vortices in Bi2Te3/NbSe2 hetero-structure, in which topological superconductivity was previously established. By using spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS), we show that the zero-bias peak of the tunneling differential conductance at the vortex center is substantially higher when the tip polarization and the external magnetic field are parallel than anti-parallel to each other. Such strong spin dependence of the tunneling is absent away from the vortex center, or in a conventional superconductor. The observed spin dependent tunneling effect is a direct evidence for the SSAR from MFs, fully consistent with theoretical analyses. Our work provides definitive evidences of MFs and will stimulate the MFs research on their novel physical properties, hence a step towards their statistics and application in quantum computing.

Cooper Pairing in Insulating Valence Band in Fe-Based Superconductors

Conventional Cooper pairing arises from attractive interaction of electrons in the metallic bands. Recent experiment on Co-doped LiFeAs shows superconductivity in the insulating valence band, which is evolved from a metallic hole band upon doping. Here we examine this phenomenon by studying superconductivity in a three-orbital Hamiltonian relevant to the doped LiFeAs. We show explicitly that Cooper pairing of the insulating hole band requires a finite pairing interaction strength. For strong coupling, the superconductivity in the hole band is robust against the sink of the hole band below the Fermi level. Our theory predicts a substantial upward shift of the chemical potential in the superconducting transition for Co-doped LiFeAs.
