Matching Tidal Deformability (Wilson) Coefficients to Black Hole Love Numbers in Higher-Curvature Gravity

We present a consistent mapping between tidal deformability coefficients (tidal Love numbers) and Wilson coefficients in effective field theory (EFT) descriptions of higher-curvature theories of gravity. In this work, we focus on the connection between the static response of a non-spinning black hole and the corresponding Wilson coefficient governing tidal imprints in gravitational-wave signals. We analyze a set of control cases to identify the key ingredients required for a systematic computation and matching procedure. In doing so, we highlight shortcomings in existing results that rely on the standard matching approach used in General Relativity when applied to higher-curvature gravity theories. As an explicit demonstration, we compute the relevant coefficients for cubic gravity theories. Our findings bridge an important gap in the correspondence between tidal Love numbers and Wilson coefficients in EFT extensions of General Relativity, which had not been thoroughly explored previously.

A concise proof of Benford's law

This article presents a concise proof of the famous Benford's law when the distribution has a Riemann integrable probability density function and provides a criterion to judge whether a distribution obeys the law. The proof is intuitive and elegant, accessible to anyone with basic knowledge of calculus, revealing that the law originates from the basic property of the human number system. The criterion can bring great convenience to the field of fraud detection.

Black hole-neutron star mergers with massive neutron stars in numerical relativity

We study the merger of black hole-neutron star (BH-NS) binaries in numerical relativity, focusing on the properties of the remnant disk and the ejecta, varying the mass of compactness of the NS and the mass and spin of the BH. We find that within the precision of our numerical simulations, the remnant disk mass and ejecta mass normalized by the NS baryon mass ($\hat{M}_{\rm{rem}}$ and $\hat{M}_{\rm{eje}}$, respectively), and the cutoff frequency $f_{\rm{cut}}$ normalized by the initial total gravitational mass of the system at infinite separation approximately agree among the models with the same NS compactness $C_{\rm{NS}}=M_{\rm{NS}}/R_{\rm{NS}}$, mass ratio $Q=M_{\rm{BH}}/M_{\rm{NS}}$, and dimensionless BH spin $\chi_{\rm{BH}}$ irrespective of the NS mass $M_{\rm{NS}}$ in the range of $1.092$--$1.691\,M_\odot$. This result shows that the merger outcome depends sensitively on $Q$, $\chi_{\rm BH}$, and $C_{\rm{NS}}$ but only weekly on $M_{\rm{NS}}$. This justifies the approach of studying the dependence of NS tidal disruptions on the NS compactness by fixing the NS mass but changing the EOS. We further perform simulations with massive NSs of $M_{\rm{NS}}=1.8M_{\odot}$, and compare our results of $\hat{M}_{\rm{rem}}$ and $\hat{M}_{\rm{eje}}$ with those given by existing fitting formulas to test their robustness for more compact NSs. We find that the fitting formulas obtained in the previous studies are accurate within the numerical errors assumed, while our results also suggest that further improvement is possible by systematically performing more precise numerical simulations.

Axion-photon conversion of GRB221009A

The newly observed gamma ray burst GRB221009A exhibits the existence of 10~TeV-scale photons, and the axion-photon conversion has been suggested as a candidate to explain such energetic features of GRB221009A. In this work we adopt a model to calculate the conversion probability of the energetic photons from GRB221009A to the Earth. The result shows that the penetration probability of photons with energy above $10^1$~TeV can be up to $10^{-2}$ to $ 10^{-4}$ depending on the coupling constant $g_{a\gamma}$ and the axion mass $m_a$, together on the magnetic field parameters of the source galaxy of GRB221009A. We show that the parameters of the source galaxy, with the magnetic field handled by a cellular model, contribute a lot of uncertainties to the penetration probability, so we have more freedom to reconcile a variety of axionlike particle parameters from other observations with the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory observation. By comparing the results in this article with the data from Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory, we can obtain more precise constraints on the ranges of these parameters.
