Joint User Association and Power Allocation in Heterogeneous Ultra Dense Network via Semi-Supervised Representation Learning

Heterogeneous Ultra-Dense Network (HUDN) is one of the vital networking architectures due to its ability to enable higher connectivity density and ultra-high data rates. Rational user association and power control schedule in HUDN can reduce wireless interference. This paper proposes a novel idea for resolving the joint user association and power control problem: the optimal user association and Base Station transmit power can be represented by channel information. Then, we solve this problem by formulating an optimal representation function. We model the HUDNs as a heterogeneous graph and train a Graph Neural Network (GNN) to approach this representation function by using semi-supervised learning, in which the loss function is composed of the unsupervised part that helps the GNN approach the optimal representation function and the supervised part that utilizes the previous experience to reduce useless exploration. We separate the learning process into two parts, the generalization-representation learning (GRL) part and the specialization-representation learning (SRL) part, which train the GNN for learning representation for generalized scenario quasi-static user distribution scenario, respectively. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed GRL-based solution has higher computational efficiency than the traditional optimization algorithm, and the performance of SRL outperforms the GRL.

UAV-Assisted Intelligent Reflecting Surface Symbiotic Radio System

This paper investigates a symbiotic unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) radio system, where the UAV is leveraged to help the IRS reflect its own signals to the base station, and meanwhile enhance the UAV transmission by passive beamforming at the IRS. First, we consider the weighted sum bit error rate (BER) minimization problem among all IRSs by jointly optimizing the UAV trajectory, IRS phase shift matrix, and IRS scheduling, subject to the minimum primary rate requirements. To tackle this complicated problem, a relaxation-based algorithm is proposed. We prove that the converged relaxation scheduling variables are binary, which means that no reconstruct strategy is needed, and thus the UAV rate constraints are automatically satisfied. Second, we consider the fairness BER optimization problem. We find that the relaxation-based method cannot solve this fairness BER problem since the minimum primary rate requirements may not be satisfied by the binary reconstruction operation. To address this issue, we first transform the binary constraints into a series of equivalent equality constraints. Then, a penalty-based algorithm is proposed to obtain a suboptimal solution. Numerical results are provided to evaluate the performance of the proposed designs under different setups, as compared with benchmarks.

Intelligent Reflecting Surface-Aided Joint Processing Coordinated Multipoint Transmission

This paper investigates intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-aided multicell wireless networks, where an IRS is deployed to assist the joint processing coordinated multipoint (JP-CoMP) transmission from multiple base stations (BSs) to multiple cell-edge users. By taking into account the fairness among cell-edge users, we aim at maximizing the minimum achievable rate of cell-edge users by jointly optimizing the transmit beamforming at the BSs and the phase shifts at the IRS. As a compromise approach, we transform the non-convex max-min problem into an equivalent form based on the mean-square error method, which facilities the design of an efficient suboptimal iterative algorithm. In addition, we investigate two scenarios, namely the single-user system and the multiuser system. For the former scenario, the optimal transmit beamforming is obtained based on the dual subgradient method, while the phase shift matrix is optimized based on the Majorization-Minimization method. For the latter scenario, the transmit beamforming matrix and phase shift matrix are obtained by the second-order cone programming and semidefinite relaxation techniques, respectively. Numerical results demonstrate the significant performance improvement achieved by deploying an IRS. Furthermore, the proposed JP-CoMP design significantly outperforms the conventional coordinated scheduling/coordinated beamforming coordinated multipoint (CS/CB-CoMP) design in terms of max-min rate.

3D UAV Trajectory and Communication Design for Simultaneous Uplink and Downlink Transmission

In this paper, we investigate the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-aided simultaneous uplink and downlink transmission networks, where one UAV acting as a disseminator is connected to multiple access points, and the other UAV acting as a base station (BS) collects data from numerous sensor nodes. The goal of this paper is to maximize the sum of the UAV-BS and UAV-AP system throughput by jointly optimizing the 3D UAV trajectory, communication scheduling, and UAV-AP/SN transmit power. We first consider a special case where the UAV-BS and UAV-AP trajectories are pre-determined. Although the resulting problem is an integer and non-convex optimization problem, a globally optimal solution is obtained by applying the polyblock outer approximation (POA) method based on the problem's hidden monotonic structure. Subsequently, for the general case considering the 3D UAV trajectory optimization, an efficient iterative algorithm is proposed to alternately optimize the divided sub-problem based on the successive convex approximation (SCA) technique. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed design is able to achieve significant system throughput gain over the benchmarks. In addition, the SCA-based method can achieve nearly the same performance as the POA based method with much lower computational complexity.

Throughput Maximization for Full-Duplex UAV Aided Small Cell Wireless Systems

This paper investigates full-duplex unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) aided small cell wireless systems, where the UAV serving as the base station (BS) is designed to transmit data to the downlink users and receive data from the uplink users simultaneously. To maximize the total system capacity, including uplink and downlink capacity, the UAV trajectory, downlink/uplink user scheduling, and uplink user transmit power are alternately optimized. The resulting optimization problem is mixed-integer and non-convex, which is challenging to solve. To address it, the block coordinate descent method and successive convex approximation techniques are leveraged. Simulation results demonstrate the significant capacity gain can be achieved by our design compared with the other designs.

Throughput Maximization for UAV-aided Backscatter Communication Networks

This paper investigates unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-aided backscatter communication (BackCom) networks, where the UAV is leveraged to help the backscatter device (BD) forward signals to the receiver. Based on the presence or absence of a direct link between BD and receiver, two protocols, namely transmit-backscatter (TB) protocol and transmit-backscatter-relay (TBR) protocol, are proposed to utilize the UAV to assist the BD. In particular, we formulate the system throughput maximization problems for the two protocols by jointly optimizing the time allocation, reflection coefficient and UAV trajectory. Different static/dynamic circuit power consumption models for the two protocols are analyzed. The resulting optimization problems are shown to be non-convex, which are challenging to solve. We first consider the dynamic circuit power consumption model, and decompose the original problems into three sub-problems, namely time allocation optimization with fixed UAV trajectory and reflection coefficient, reflection coefficient optimization with fixed UAV trajectory and time allocation, and UAV trajectory optimization with fixed reflection coefficient and time allocation. Then, an efficient iterative algorithm is proposed for both protocols by leveraging the block coordinate descent method and successive convex approximation (SCA) techniques. In addition, for the static circuit power consumption model, we obtain the optimal time allocation with a given reflection coefficient and UAV trajectory and the optimal reflection coefficient with low computational complexity by using the Lagrangian dual method. Simulation results show that the proposed protocols are able to achieve significant throughput gains over the compared benchmarks.

Energy-Efficient Cooperative Secure Transmission in Multi-UAV Enabled Wireless Networks

This paper investigates a multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) enabled cooperative secure transmission scheme in the presence of multiple potential eavesdroppers. Specifically, multiple source UAVs (SUAVs) send confidential information to multiple legitimate ground users and in the meantime multiple jamming UAVs (JUAVs) cooperatively transmit interference signals to multiple eavesdroppers in order to improve the legitimate users' achievable secrecy rate. By taking into account the limited energy budget of UAV, our goal is to maximize the system secrecy energy efficiency (SEE), namely the achievable secrecy rate per energy consumption unit, by jointly optimizing the UAV trajectory, transmit power and user scheduling under the constraints of UAV mobility as well as the maximum transmit power. The resulting optimization problem is shown to be a non-convex and mixed-integer fractional optimization problem, which is challenging to solve. We decompose the original problem into three sub-problems, and then an efficient iterative algorithm is proposed by leveraging the block coordinate descent and Dinkelbach method in combination with successive convex approximation techniques. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms the other benchmarks significantly in terms of the system SEE.

Energy Optimization for Cellular-Connected Multi-UAV Mobile Edge Computing Systems with Multi-Access Schemes

In this paper, a cellular-connected unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) mobile edge computing system is studied in which the multiple UAVs are served by terrestrial base station (TBS) for computation task offloading. Our goal is to minimize the total UAVs energy consumption, including propulsion energy, computation energy and communication energy, while ensuring that the total number of bits of UAVs are completely computed. For tackling the large amount of bits for computation, we propose a resource partitioning strategy where one portion of tasks is migrated to TBS for computation and the other portion of tasks is locally computed at UAV. For deeply comprehending the impacts of access manners on the system performance, we consider four access schemes in the uplink transmission, i.e., time division multiple access (TDMA), orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA), One-by-One access and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). The problem of jointly optimizing bit allocation, power allocation, resource partitioning as well as UAV trajectory under TBS's energy budget is formulated and tackled by means of successive convex approximation (SCA) technique. The numerical results show that the proposed schemes save much energy compared with benchmark schemes.

Placement Delivery Array Design via Attention-Based Deep Neural Network

A decentralized coded caching scheme has been proposed by Maddah-Ali and Niesen, and has been shown to alleviate the load of networks. Recently, placement delivery array (PDA) was proposed to characterize the coded caching scheme. In this paper, a neural architecture is first proposed to learn the construction of PDAs. Our model solves the problem of variable size PDAs using mechanism of neural attention and reinforcement learning. It differs from the previous attempts in that, instead of using combined optimization algorithms to get PDAs, it uses sequence-to-sequence model to learn construct PDAs. Numerical results are given to demonstrate that the proposed method can effectively implement coded caching. We also show that the complexity of our method to construct PDAs is low.

Cache-Enabled Dynamic Rate Allocation via Deep Self-Transfer Reinforcement Learning

Caching and rate allocation are two promising approaches to support video streaming over wireless network. However, existing rate allocation designs do not fully exploit the advantages of the two approaches. This paper investigates the problem of cache-enabled QoE-driven video rate allocation problem. We establish a mathematical model for this problem, and point out that it is difficult to solve the problem with traditional dynamic programming. Then we propose a deep reinforcement learning approaches to solve it. First, we model the problem as a Markov decision problem. Then we present a deep Q-learning algorithm with a special knowledge transfer process to find out effective allocation policy. Finally, numerical results are given to demonstrate that the proposed solution can effectively maintain high-quality user experience of mobile user moving among small cells. We also investigate the impact of configuration of critical parameters on the performance of our algorithm.

Interleaved Training and Training-Based Transmission Design for Hybrid Massive Antenna Downlink

In this paper, we study the beam-based training design jointly with the transmission design for hybrid massive antenna single-user (SU) and multiple-user (MU) systems where outage probability is adopted as the performance measure. For SU systems, we propose an interleaved training design to concatenate the feedback and training procedures, thus making the training length adaptive to the channel realization. Exact analytical expressions are derived for the average training length and the outage probability of the proposed interleaved training. For MU systems, we propose a joint design for the beam-based interleaved training, beam assignment, and MU data transmissions. Two solutions for the beam assignment are provided with different complexity-performance tradeoff. Analytical results and simulations show that for both SU and MU systems, the proposed joint training and transmission designs achieve the same outage performance as the traditional full-training scheme but with significant saving in the training overhead.

Signal Processing for MIMO-NOMA: Present and Future Challenges

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), as the newest member of the multiple access family, is envisioned to be an essential component of 5G mobile networks. The combination of NOMA and multi-antenna multi-input multi-output (MIMO) technologies exhibits a significant potential in improving spectral efficiency and providing better wireless services to more users. In this article, we introduce the basic concepts of MIMO-NOMA and summarize the key technical problems in MIMO-NOMA systems. Then, we explore the problem formulation, beamforming, user clustering, and power allocation of single/multi-cluster MIMO-NOMA in the literature along with their limitations. Furthermore, we point out an important issue of the stability of successive interference cancellation (SIC) that arises using achievable rates as performance metrics in practical NOMA/MIMO-NOMA systems. Finally, we discuss incorporating NOMA with massive/millimeter wave MIMO, and identify the main challenges and possible future research directions in this area.

Performance Analysis for Massive MIMO Downlink with Low Complexity Approximate Zero-Forcing Precoding

Zero-forcing (ZF) precoding plays an important role for massive MIMO downlink due to its near optimal performance. However, the high computation cost of the involved matrix inversion hinders its application. In this paper, we adopt the first order Neumann series (NS) for a low-complexity approximation. By introducing a relaxation parameter jointly with one selected user's interference to others into the precondition matrix, we propose the identity-plus-column NS (ICNS) method. By further exploiting the multi-user diversity gain via choosing the user with the largest interference to others, the ordered ICNS method is also proposed. Moreover, the sum-rate approximations of the proposed ICNS method and the competitive existing identity matrix based NS (INS) method are derived in closed-form, based on which the performance loss of ICNS due to inversion approximation compared with ideal ZF and its performance gain over INS are explicitly analyzed for three typical massive MIMO scenarios. Finally, simulations verify our analytical results and also show that the proposed two designs achieve better performance-complexity tradeoff than ideal ZF and existing low-complexity ZF precodings for practical large antenna number, correlated channels and not-so-small loading factor.

Energy Efficient Beamforming for Massive MIMO Public Channel

For massive MIMO public channel with any sector size in either microwave or millimeter wave (mmwave) band, this paper studies the beamforming design to minimize the transmit power while guaranteeing the quality of service (QoS) for randomly deployed users. First the ideal beampattern is derived via Parseval Identity, based on which a beamforming design problem is formulated to minimize the gap with the idea beampattern. The problem is transformable to a multiconvex one and an iterative optimization algorithm is used to obtain the full-digital beamformer. In addition, with the help of same beampattern theorem, the power amplifier (PA) efficiency of the beamformer is improved with unchanged beampattern. Finally, the practical hybrid implementation is obtained that achieves the full-digital beamformer solution. Simulations verify the advantages of the proposed scheme over existing ones.

Performance Scaling Law for Multi-Cell Multi-User Massive MIMO

This work provides a comprehensive scaling law based performance analysis for multi-cell multi-user massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) downlink systems. Imperfect channel state information (CSI), pilot contamination, and channel spatial correlation are all considered. First, a sum- rate lower bound is derived by exploiting the asymptotically deterministic property of the received signal power, while keeping the random nature of other components in the signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (SINR) intact. Via a general scaling model on important network parameters, including the number of users, the channel training energy and the data transmission power, with respect to the number of base station antennas, the asymptotic scaling law of the effective SINR is obtained, which reveals quantitatively the tradeoff of the network parameters. More importantly, pilot contamination and pilot contamination elimination (PCE) are considered in the analytical framework. In addition, the applicability of the derived asymptotic scaling law in practical systems with large but finite antenna numbers are discussed. Finally, sufficient conditions on the parameter scalings for the SINR to be asymptotically deterministic in the sense of mean square convergence are provided, which covers existing results on such analysis as special cases and shows the effect of PCE explicitly.

On Optimal Power Allocation for Downlink Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access Systems

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) enables power-domain multiplexing via successive interference cancellation (SIC) and has been viewed as a promising technology for 5G communication. The full benefit of NOMA depends on resource allocation, including power allocation and channel assignment, for all users, which, however, leads to mixed integer programs. In the literature, the optimal power allocation has only been found in some special cases, while the joint optimization of power allocation and channel assignment generally requires exhaustive search. In this paper, we investigate resource allocation in downlink NOMA systems. As the main contribution, we analytically characterize the optimal power allocation with given channel assignment over multiple channels under different performance criteria. Specifically, we consider the maximin fairness, weighted sum rate maximization, sum rate maximization with quality of service (QoS) constraints, energy efficiency maximization with weights or QoS constraints in NOMA systems. We also take explicitly into account the order constraints on the powers of the users on each channel, which are often ignored in theexisting works, and show that they have a significant impact on SIC in NOMA systems. Then, we provide the optimal power allocation for the considered criteria in closed or semi-closed form. We also propose a low-complexity efficient method to jointly optimize channel assignment and power allocation in NOMA systems by incorporating the matching algorithm with the optimal power allocation. Simulation results show that the joint resource optimization using our optimal power allocation yields better performance than the existing schemes.

Joint User Association and Interference Mitigation for D2D-Enabled Heterogeneous Cellular Networks

The heterogeneous cellular networks (HCNs) with device-to-device (D2D) communications have been a promising solution to cost-efficient delivery of high data rates. A key challenge in such D2D-enabled HCNs is how to design an effective association scheme with D2D model selection for load balancing. Moreover, the offloaded users and D2D receivers (RXs) would suffer strong interference from BSs, especially from high-power BSs. Evidently, a good association scheme should integrate with interference mitigation. Thus, we first propose an effective resource partitioning strategy that can mitigate the interference received by offloaded users from high-power BSs and the one received by D2D RXs from BSs. Based on this, we then design a user association scheme for load balancing, which jointly considers user association and D2D model selection to maximize network-wide utility. Considering that the formulated problem is in a nonlinear and mixted-integer form and hard to tackle, we adopt a dual decomposition method to develop an efficient distributed algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme provides a load balancing gain and a resource partitioning gain.

Energy-Efficient User Association with Open Loop Power Control for Uplink Heterogeneous Cellular Networks

Energy reduction for wireless systems becomes more and more important due to its impact on the operation cost and global carbon footprint. In this paper, we investigate three kinds of energy-efficient association schemes under open loop power control for uplink heterogeneous cellular networks, which are formulated as a whole energy efficiency maximization problem, a sum energy efficiency maximization problem and a utility maximization problem respectively. The third case takes account of load balancing level and user's fairness in the energy-efficient association. Considering that the first problem is in a fractional mixed-integer form, we introduce an energy efficiency parameter to convert it into a parametric subtractive form, and then design an effective iterative algorithm to achieve the optimal solutions. As for the third problem, we first introduce a dual variable to decouple the constraint and then develop a distributed algorithm using dual decomposition. In addition, we also give the convergence proof for the proposed algorithms. In order to confirm the effectiveness of energy-efficient user association algorithms, we introduce other association rules for comparison, and investigate the influences of different parameters on the association performance of these association rules.
