Hot electron relaxation in normal state of iron pnictides: memory function approach

This study leads to the investigation of the non-equilibrium electron relaxation in the normal state of iron pnictides. Here we consider the relaxation of electrons due to their coupling with magnons and phonons in the metallic state of iron pnictides using the memory function approach. In the present model, electrons live at a higher temperature than that of the phonon and magnon baths, mimicking a non-equilibrium steady state situation. Further we analyze theoretically the generalized Drude scattering rate within the framework of Two Temperature Model and study the full frequency and temperature behavior for it. In zero frequency regime, the rate of electron-magnon scattering and electron-phonon scattering shows a linear temperature dependence at higher temperature values greater than Bloch-Grüneisen temperature. Whereas at lower temperature values, $T\llΘ_{BG}$, corresponding scattering rates follow the temperature behavior as ($1/τ_{e-p} \varpropto T^3$) and ($1/τ_{e-m} \varpropto T^{3/2}$), respectively. In the AC regime, we compute that $1/τ\propto ω^2$ for $ω\llω_{BG}$ and for the values greater than the Bloch-Grüneisen frequency, it is $ω$-independent. Also, in lower frequency and zero temperature limit, we have observed the different frequency scale of electron-magnon and electron-phonon scattering i.e ($1/τ\propto ω^{3/2}$) and ($1/τ\propto ω^{3}$). These results can be viewed with the pump-probe experimental setting for the normal state of iron pnictides.

Spin-gapped magnets with weak anisotropies I: Constraints on the phase of the condensate wave function

We study the thermodynamic properties of dimerized spin-gapped quantum magnets with and without exchange anisotropy (EA) and Dzyaloshinsky and Moriya (DM) anisotropies within the mean-field approximation (MFA). For this purpose we obtain the thermodynamic potential $Ω$ of a triplon gas taking into account the strength of DM interaction up to second order. The minimization of $Ω$ with respect to self-energies $Σ_n$ and $Σ_{an}$ yields the equation for $X_{1,2}=Σ_n\pmΣ_{an}-μ$, which define the dispersion of quasiparticles $E_k=\sqrt{ε_k+X_1}\sqrt{ε_k+X_2}$ where $ε_k$ is the bare dispersion of triplons. The minimization of $Ω$ with respect to the magnitude $ρ_0$ and the phase $Θ$ of triplon condensate leads to coupled equations for $ρ_0$ and $Θ$. We discuss the restrictions on $ρ_0$ and $Θ$ imposed by these equations for systems with and without anisotropy. The requirement of dynamical stability conditions $(X_1>0, X_2>0)$ in equilibrium, as well as the Hugenholtz-Pines theorem, particularly for isotropic Bose condensate, impose certain conditions to the physical solutions of these equations. It is shown that the phase angle of a purely homogenous Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) without any anisotropy may only take values $Θ=πn $ (n=0,$\pm 1,\pm 2$...) while that of BEC with even a tiny DM interaction results in $Θ=π/2+2πn$. In contrast to the widely used Hartree-Fock-Popov approximation, which allows arbitrary phase angle, our approach predicts that the phase angle may have only discrete values, while the phase of the wave function of the whole system remains arbitrary as expected. The consequences of this phase locking for interference of two Bose condensates and to their possible Josephson junction is studied.

Characteristic temperatures of a triplon system of dimerized quantum magnets

Exploiting the analogy between ultracold atomic gases and the system of triplons, we study magneto-thermodynamic properties of dimerized quantum magnets in the framework of Bose -Einstein condensation (BEC). Particularly, introducing the inversion (or Joule - Thomson) temperature $T_{JT}$ as the point where Joule - Thomson coefficient of an isenthalpic process changes its sign, we show that for a simple paramagnet, this temperature is infinite, while for three-dimensional (3D) dimerized quantum magnets it is finite and always larger than the critical temperature $T_c$ of BEC. Below the inversion temperature $T<T_{JT}$ the system of triplons may be in a liquid phase, which undergoes a transition into a superfluid phase at $T\le T_c<T_{JT}$. The dependence of the inversion temperature on the external magnetic field $T_{JT} (H)$ has been calculated for quantum magnets of TlCuCl$_3$ and Sr$_3$Cr$_2$O$_8$.

Non-equilibrium electron relaxation in Graphene

We apply the powerful method of memory function formalism to investigate non-equilibrium electron relaxation in graphene. Within the premises of Two Temperature Model (TTM), explicit expressions of the imaginary part of the Memory Function or generalized Drude scattering rate ($1/\tau$) are obtained. In the DC limit and in equilibrium case where electron temperature ($T_e$) is equal to phonon temperature (T), we reproduce the known results (i.e. $ 1/\tau \propto T^4$ when $T<<\Theta_{BG}$ and $1/\tau \propto T$ when $T>>\Theta_{BG}$, where $ \Theta_{BG}$ is the Bloch-Gr\"{u}neisen temperature). We report several new results for $1/ \tau$ where $T \neq T_e$ relevant in pump-probe spectroscopic experiments. In the finite frequency regime, we find that $1/\tau \propto \omega^2$ when $\omega<<\omega_{BG}$, and for $\omega>>\omega_{BG}$ it is $\omega$ independent and also electron temperature independent. These results can be verified in a typical pump-probe experimental setting for graphene.

A Novel Effect of Electron Spin Resonance on Electrical Resistivity

We extend the well known phenomenon of magnetoresistance (extra resistivity of materials in transverse magnetic field) to a new and unexplored regime where in addition to a transverse magnetic field, a transverse AC field of resonant frequency is also applied. In a magnetic field, electron spin levels are Zeeman split. In a resonant AC field, we uncover a new channel of momentum relaxation in which electrons in upper Zeeman level can deexcite to lower Zeeman level by generating spin fluctuation excitation in the lattice (similar to what happens in Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) spectroscopy). An additional resistivity due to this novel mechanism is predicted in which momentum randomization of Zeeman split electrons happen via bosonic excitations (spin fluctuations). An order of magnitude of this additional resistivity is calculated. The whole work is based upon an extension of Einstein's derivation of equilibrium Planckian formula to near equilibrium systems.

The Kelvin Water Dropper: Converting a physics toy into an educational device

The Kelvin Water Dropper was discovered by Lord Kelvin in 1867 and it works on the principle of electrostatic induction. A working model of Kelvin Water Dropper is fabricated in the workshop facility of Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad. We, for the first time, performed a quantitative measurement of the temporal development of charge using a new method that we call "Effective Capacitance method". With this, the Kelvin Water Dropper experiment can be introduced in undergraduate curriculum, where students can perform quantitative measurements with the apparatus using our "Effective Capacitance method". This should change the generally held view of Kelvin water dropper as being an entertaining toy to a mature educational device.

Influence of multiorbitals and anisotropic Coulomb interactions on isotope effect coefficient in doped Fe-based superconductors

The present work describes the theoretical analysis of isotope effect coefficient as a function of transition temperature in two orbital per site model Hamiltonian in iron based superconducting system. The expression of isotope effect coefficient has been computed numerically and self-consistently by employing Green's function technique within the BCS-mean-field approximation. It is observed that the isotope effect coefficient increases with the increase of the hybridization while with the increase in Coulomb interaction it starts decreasing. On increasing the carrier density per site in two orbital per site iron pnictide system, isotope effect coefficient ($α$) exhibits large values (much higher than BCS limit) at lower temperatures. While in the underdoped case, isotope effect coefficient shows minimum value in superconducting states of the iron based systems. Furthermore, it has been found that the large value of the isotope effect coefficient is the indication of the fact that the contribution of phonon alone is inadequate as the origin of superconductivity in these systems. Finally, the obtained theoretical results have been compared with experimental and existing theoretical observations in iron based superconductors.

Dynamical Conductivity of Dirac Materials

For graphene (a Dirac material) it has been theoretically predicted and experimentally observed that DC resistivity is proportional to $ T^4$ when the temperature is much less than Bloch- Gr\"{u}neisen ($\Theta_{BG}$) temperature and T linear in opposite case ($T>>\Theta_{BG}$). Going beyond the DC case, we investigate the dynamical conductivity in graphene using the powerful method of memory function formalism. In the DC (zero frequency regime) limit, we obtained the above mention behavior which was previously obtained using the Bloch-Boltzmann kinetic equation. In the finite frequency regime, we obtained several new results: (1) the generalized Drude scattering rate, in the zero temperature limit, shows $\omega^4 $ behavior at low frequencies ($\omega << k_B \Theta_{BG}/ \hbar$) and saturates at higher frequencies. We also observed the Holstein Mechanism, however, with different power laws from that in the case of metals; (2) At higher frequencies, $\omega>>k_B \Theta_{BG}/ \hbar$, and higher temperatures $T>>\Theta_{BG}$, we observed that the generalized Drude scattering rate is linear in temperature. In addition, several other results are also obtained. With the experimental advancement of this field, these results should be experimentally tested.
