Carleman type inequalities for fractional relativistic operators

In this paper we derive Carleman estimates for the fractional relativistic operator. We consider changing-sign solutions to the heat equation for such operators. We prove monotonicity inequalities and convexity of certain energy functionals to deduce Carleman estimates with linear exponential weight. Our approach is based on spectral methods and functional calculus.

Directional square functions

Quantitative formulations of Fefferman's counterexample for the ball multiplier are naturally linked to square function estimates for conical and directional multipliers. In this article we develop a novel framework for these square function estimates, based on a directional embedding theorem for Carleson sequences and multi-parameter time-frequency analysis techniques. As applications we prove sharp or quantified bounds for Rubio de Francia type square functions of conical multipliers and of multipliers adapted to rectangles pointing along $N$ directions. A suitable combination of these estimates yields a new and currently best-known logarithmic bound for the Fourier restriction to an $N$-gon, improving on previous results of A. Cordoba. Our directional Carleson embedding extends to the weighted setting, yielding previously unknown weighted estimates for directional maximal functions and singular integrals.

Maximal operators on the infinite-dimensional torus

We study maximal operators related to bases on the infinite-dimensional torus $\mathbb{T}^ω$. {For the normalized Haar measure $dx$ on $\mathbb{T}^ω$ it is known that $M^{\mathcal{R}_0}$, the maximal operator associated with the dyadic basis $\mathcal{R}_0$, is of weak type $(1,1)$, but $M^{\mathcal{R}}$, the operator associated with the natural general basis $\mathcal{R}$, is not. We extend the latter result to all $q \in [1,\infty)$. Then we find a wide class of intermediate bases $\mathcal{R}_0 \subset \mathcal{R}' \subset \mathcal{R}$, for which maximal functions have controlled, but sometimes very peculiar behavior.} Precisely, for given $q_0 \in [1, \infty)$ we construct $\mathcal{R}'$ such that $M^{\mathcal{R}'}$ is of restricted weak type $(q,q)$ if and only if $q$ belongs to a predetermined range of the form $(q_0, \infty]$ or $[q_0, \infty]$. Finally, we study the weighted setting, considering the Muckenhoupt $A_p^\mathcal{R}(\mathbb{T}^ω)$ and reverse Hölder $\mathrm{RH}_r^\mathcal{R}(\mathbb{T}^ω)$ classes of weights associated with $\mathcal{R}$. For each $p \in (1, \infty)$ and each $w \in A_p^\mathcal{R}(\mathbb{T}^ω)$ we obtain that $M^{\mathcal{R}}$ is not bounded on $L^q(w)$ in the whole range $q \in [1,\infty)$. Since we are able to show that \[ \bigcup_{p \in (1, \infty)}A_p^\mathcal{R}(\mathbb{T}^ω) = \bigcup_{r \in (1, \infty)} \mathrm{RH}_r^\mathcal{R}(\mathbb{T}^ω), \] the unboundedness result applies also to all reverse Hölder weights.

Discrete Carleman estimates and three balls inequalities

We prove logarithmic convexity estimates and three balls inequalities for discrete magnetic Schrödinger operators. These quantitatively connect the discrete setting in which the unique continuation property fails and the continuum setting in which the unique continuation property is known to hold under suitable regularity assumptions. As a key auxiliary result which might be of independent interest we present a Carleman estimate for these discrete operators.

Maximal estimates for a generalized spherical mean Radon transform acting on radial functions

We study a generalized spherical means operator, viz. generalized spherical mean Radon transform, acting on radial functions. As the main results, we find conditions for the associated maximal operator and its local variant to be bounded on power weighted Lebesgue spaces. This translates, in particular, into almost everywhere convergence to radial initial data results for solutions to certain Cauchy problems for classical Euler-Poisson-Darboux and wave equations. Moreover, our results shed some new light to the interesting and important question of optimality of the yet known $L^p$ boundedness results for the maximal operator in the general non-radial case. It appears that these could still be notably improved, as indicated by our conjecture of the ultimate sharp result.

$C_p$ estimates for rough homogeneous singular integrals and sparse forms

We consider Coifman--Fefferman inequalities for rough homogeneous singular integrals $T_Ω$ and $C_p$ weights. It was recently shown by Li-Pérez-Rivera-Ríos-Roncal that $$ \|T_Ω\|_{L^p(w)} \le C_{p,T,w} \|Mf\|_{L^p(w)} $$ for every $0< p < \infty$ and every $w \in A_\infty$. Our first goal is to generalize this result for every $w \in C_q$ where $q > \max\{1,p\}$ without using extrapolation theory. Although the bounds we prove are new even in a qualitative sense, we also give the quantitative bound with respect to the $C_q$ characteristic. Our techniques rely on recent advances in sparse domination theory and we actually prove most of our estimates for sparse forms. Our second goal is to continue the structural analysis of $C_p$ classes. We consider some weak self-improving properties of $C_p$ weights and weak and dyadic $C_p$ classes. We also revisit and generalize a counterexample by Kahanpää and Mejlbro who showed that $C_p \setminus \bigcup_{q > p} C_q \neq \emptyset$. We combine their construction with techniques of Lerner to define an explicit weight class $\widetilde{C}_p$ such that $\bigcup_{q > p} C_q \subsetneq \widetilde{C}_p \subsetneq C_p$ and every $w \in \widetilde{C}_p$ satisfies Muckenhoupt's conjecture. In particular, we give a different, self-contained proof for the fact that the $C_{p+\varepsilon}$ condition is not necessary for the Coifman--Fefferman inequality and our ideas allow us to consider also dimensions higher than $1$.

Weighted norm inequalities for rough singular integral operators

In this paper we provide weighted estimates for rough operators, including rough homogeneous singular integrals $T_Ω$ with $Ω\in L^\infty(\mathbb{S}^{n-1})$ and the Bochner-Riesz multiplier at the critical index $B_{(n-1)/2}$. More precisely, we prove qualitative and quantitative versions of Coifman-Fefferman type inequalities and their vector-valued extensions, weighted $A_p-A_\infty$ strong and weak type inequalities for $1<p<\infty$, and $A_1-A_\infty$ type weak $(1,1)$ estimates. Moreover, Fefferman-Stein type inequalities are obtained, proving in this way a conjecture raised by the second-named author in the 90's. As a corollary, we obtain the weighted $A_1-A_\infty$ type estimates. Finally, we study rough homogenous singular integrals with a kernel involving a function $Ω\in L^q(\mathbb{S}^{n-1})$, $1<q<\infty$, and provide Fefferman-Stein inequalities too. The arguments used for our proofs combine several tools: a recent sparse domination result by Conde-Alonso et.al. [CACDPO], results by the first author in [L], suitable adaptations of Rubio de Francia algorithm, the extrapolation theorems for $A_{\infty}$ weights [CMP,CGMP] and ideas contained in previous works by A. Seeger in [S] and D. Fan and S. Sato [FS].

Two-weight mixed norm estimates for a generalized spherical mean Radon transform acting on radial functions

We investigate a generalized spherical means operator, viz. generalized spherical mean Radon transform, acting on radial functions. We establish an integral representation of this operator and find precise estimates of the corresponding kernel. As the main result, we prove two-weight mixed norm estimates for the integral operator, with general power weights involved. This leads to weighted Strichartz type estimates for solutions to certain Cauchy problems for classical Euler-Poisson-Darboux and wave equations with radial initial data.

Sharp heat kernel estimates in the Fourier-Bessel setting for a continuous range of the type parameter

The heat kernel in the setting of classical Fourier-Bessel expansions is defined by an oscillatory series which cannot be computed explicitly. We prove qualitatively sharp estimates of this kernel. Our method relies on establishing a connection with a situation of expansions based on Jacobi polynomials and then transferring known sharp bounds for the related Jacobi heat kernel.

Potential operators associated with Jacobi and Fourier-Bessel expansions

We study potential operators (Riesz and Bessel potentials) associated with classical Jacobi and Fourier-Bessel expansions. We prove sharp estimates for the corresponding potential kernels. Then we characterize those $1 \le p,q \le \infty$, for which the potential operators are of strong type $(p,q)$, of weak type $(p,q)$ and of restricted weak type $(p,q)$. These results may be thought of as analogues of the celebrated Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev fractional integration theorem in the Jacobi and Fourier-Bessel settings. As an ingredient of our line of reasoning, we also obtain sharp estimates of the Poisson kernel related to Fourier-Bessel expansions.

On sharp heat and subordinated kernel estimates in the Fourier-Bessel setting

We prove qualitatively sharp heat kernel bounds in the setting of Fourier-Bessel expansions when the associated type parameter $ν$ is half-integer. Moreover, still for half-integer $ν$, we also obtain sharp estimates of all kernels subordinated to the heat kernel. Analogous estimates for general $ν> -1$ are conjectured. Some consequences concerning the related heat semigroup maximal operator are discussed.
