Tracing the high-z cosmic web with Quaia: catalogues of voids and clusters in the quasar distribution

Understanding the formation and evolution of the cosmic web of galaxies is a fundamental goal of cosmology, using various tracers of the cosmic large-scale structure at an ever wider range of redshifts. Our principal aim is to advance the mapping of the cosmic web at high redshifts using observational and synthetic catalogues of quasars (QSOs), which offer a powerful probe of structure formation and the validity of the concordance cosmological model. In this analysis, we selected 708,483 QSOs at $0.8<z<2.2$ from the Quaia data set, allowing a reconstruction of the matter density field using 24,372 deg$^2$ sky area with a well-understood selection function, and thus going beyond previous studies. Using the REVOLVER method, we created catalogues of voids and clusters based on the estimation of the local density at QSO positions with Voronoi tessellation. We tested the consistency of Quaia data and 50 mock catalogues, including various parameters of the voids and clusters in data subsets, and also measurements of the density profiles of these cosmic super-structures at $100 h^{-1}$Mpc scales. We identified 12,842 voids and 41,111 clusters in the distribution of Quaia QSOs. The agreement between data and mocks is at a level of 5-10%, considering void and cluster radii, average inner density, and density profiles. In particular, we tested the role of survey mask proximity effects in the void and cluster detection, which albeit present, are consistent in simulations and observations. The largest voids and clusters reach $R_{eff} \approx 250 h^{-1}$Mpc and $150 h^{-1}$Mpc, respectively, but without evidence for ultra-large cosmic structures exceeding the dimensions of the largest structures in the mocks. As an important deliverable, we share our density field estimation, void catalogues, and cluster catalogues with the public, allowing various additional cross-correlation probes at high-z.

Radio-loudness statistics of quasars from Quaia-VLASS

Quasars are objects of high interest in extragalactic astrophysics, cosmology, and astrometry. One of their useful qualities is their potential radio loudness. However, the fraction of radio-loud vs. radio-quiet quasars is subject to ongoing investigations, where the statistical power is limited by the low number of known quasars with radio counterparts. In this analysis, we revisited the radio loudness statistics of quasars by significantly expanding the pool of known sources. Our main goal was to create a new, value-added quasar catalog with information about their extinction-corrected magnitudes, radio flux density, possible contamination levels, and other flags, besides their sky coordinates and photometric redshifts. We cross-matched the optical Quaia catalog of about 1.3 million quasars (from the Gaia data) with 1.9 million sources from the Very Large Array Sky Survey (VLASS) radio catalog. We explored different thresholds for the matching radius, balancing completeness and purity of the resulting Quaia-VLASS catalog, and found 1.5 arcseconds a sufficient choice. Our main finding is that the quasar radio-loud fraction is in good agreement with previous works (< 10%), and there is no significant large-scale sky pattern in radio loudness. The exact estimate depends on the G-band magnitude limit, and we observed weak trends with redshift and absolute optical magnitude, possibly indicating remnant systematic effects in our data. The cross-matched Quaia-VLASS catalog with 43,650 sources and accompanying code are freely available at doi:10.5281/zenodo.16035690. This latest census of QSOs with radio counterparts will facilitate further investigations of the dichotomy of radio-loud and radio-quiet quasars, and it may also support other lines of research.

Discovery of 100 kpc narrow curved twin jet in S-shaped giant radio galaxy: J0644+1043

We report the discovery of an S-shaped morphology of the radio galaxy J0644$+$1043 imaged with a 30 $μ$Jy sensitive 525 MHz broadband (band 3 $+$ 4) uGMRT map. Dedicated spectroscopic observations of the host galaxy carried out with the 2-meter Rozhen telescope yielded a redshift of 0.0488, giving a projected linear size of the peculiar radio structure of over 0.7 Mpc. This giant radio galaxy is powered by a black hole of mass 4.1$^{+9.39}_{-2.87}\times 10^8$ \msun, from which vicinity emanate well-collimated and knotty jets, each $\sim$100 kpc long. The entire radio structure, presumably due to the effective jet precession, is less than 50 Myr old, has a power of $\sim$6 $\times 10^{24}$ W Hz$^{-1}$ at 1.4 GHz and the observed morphological characteristics do not strictly conform to the traditional FR I or FR II categories.

Polarimetric Reverberation Mapping in Medium-Band Filters

Earlier, we suggested the "reload" concept of the polarimetric reverberation mapping of active galactic nuclei (AGN), proposed for the first time more than 10 years ago. We have successfully tested this approach of reverberation mapping of the broad emission line on the galaxy Mrk 6. It was shown that such an idea allows one to look at the AGN central parsec structure literally in a new light. However, the method originally assumed the use of spectropolarimetric observations, expensive in terms of telescope time, and implemented on rare large telescopes. Currently, we propose an adaptation of the polarimetric reverberation mapping of broad lines in medium-band filters following the idea of the photometric reverberation mapping, when filters are selected so that their bandwidth is oriented to the broad line and the surrounding continuum near. In this paper, we present the progress status of such monitoring conducted jointly at the Special astrophysical observatory and Asiago Cima Ekar observatory (OAPd/INAF) with support from Rozhen National Astronomical Observatory (NAO), some first results for the most frequently observed AGNs Mrk 335, Mrk 509, and Mrk 817, and the discussion of the future perspectives of the campaign.

NPM1G -10.0586: an emission-line companion of the Seyfert galaxy Mrk 509

We report spectral observations of the galaxy NPM1G -10.0586, the main candidate-companion of Mrk 509. Mrk 509 is a Seyfert galaxy showing no evidence of morphological perturbations of the potential. The spectrum of NPM1G -10.0586 obtained by us is emission-line. The derived weighted mean redshift is 0.03313 +- 0.00023, which makes NPM1G -10.0586 a physical companion of Mrk 509.

Multiband optical surface brightness profile decompositions of the Seyfert galaxies Mrk 79 and NGC 5548

We present preliminary results of the Johnson-Cousins (U)BVRI surface brightness profile decompositions of the Seyfert galaxies Mrk 79 and NGC 5548. The profiles were modelled as a sum of a Gaussian law for the nucleus, a Sersic law for the bulge and an exponent law for the disk. A flat bar was added to the model profile of Mrk 79. The parameters and the total magnitudes of the structural components were derived.
