Covering properties of $ω$-mad families

We prove that CH implies the existence of a Cohen-indestructible mad family such that the Mathias forcing associated to its filter adds dominating reals, while $\mathfrak b=\mathfrak c$ is consistent with the negation of this statement as witnessed by the Laver model for the consistency of Borel's conjecture.

Convergence of measures in forcing extensions

We prove that if $\mathcal{A}$ is a $σ$-complete Boolean algebra in a model $V$ of set theory and $\mathbb{P}\in V$ is a proper forcing with the Laver property preserving the ground model reals non-meager, then every pointwise convergent sequence of measures on $\mathcal{A}$ in a $\mathbb{P}$-generic extension $V[G]$ is weakly convergent, i.e. $\mathcal{A}$ has the Vitali--Hahn--Saks property in $V[G]$. This yields a consistent example of a whole class of infinite Boolean algebras with this property and of cardinality strictly smaller than the dominating number $\mathfrak{d}$. We also obtain a new consistent situation in which there exists an Efimov space.

Ways of Destruction

We study the following natural strong variant of destroying Borel ideals: $\mathbb{P}$ $\textit{$+$-destroys}$ $\mathcal{I}$ if $\mathbb{P}$ adds an $\mathcal{I}$-positive set which has finite intersection with every $A\in\mathcal{I}\cap V$. Also, we discuss the associated variants \begin{align*} \mathrm{non}^*(\mathcal{I},+)=&\min\big\{|\mathcal{Y}|:\mathcal{Y}\subseteq\mathcal{I}^+,\; \forall\;A\in\mathcal{I}\;\exists\;Y\in\mathcal{Y}\;|A\cap Y|<ω\big\}\\ \mathrm{cov}^*(\mathcal{I},+)=&\min\big\{|\mathcal{C}|:\mathcal{C}\subseteq\mathcal{I},\; \forall\;Y\in\mathcal{I}^+\;\exists\;C\in\mathcal{C}\;|Y\cap C|=ω\big\} \end{align*} of the star-uniformity and the star-covering numbers of these ideals. Among other results, (1) we give a simple combinatorial characterisation when a real forcing $\mathbb{P}_I$ can $+$-destroy a Borel ideal $\mathcal{J}$; (2) we discuss many classical examples of Borel ideals, their $+$-destructibility, and cardinal invariants; (3) we show that the Mathias-Prikry, $\mathbb{M}(\mathcal{I}^*)$-generic real $+$-destroys $\mathcal{I}$ iff $\mathbb{M}(\mathcal{I}^*)$ $+$-destroys $\mathcal{I}$ iff $\mathcal{I}$ can be $+$-destroyed iff $\mathrm{cov}^*(\mathcal{I},+)>ω$; (4) we characterise when the Laver-Prikry, $\mathbb{L}(\mathcal{I}^*)$-generic real $+$-destroys $\mathcal{I}$, and in the case of P-ideals, when exactly $\mathbb{L}(\mathcal{I}^*)$ $+$-destroys $\mathcal{I}$; (5) we briefly discuss an even stronger form of destroying ideals closely related to the additivity of the null ideal.

Selective covering properties of product spaces, II: gamma spaces

We study productive properties of gamma spaces, and their relation to other, classic and modern, selective covering properties. Among other things, we prove the following results: 1. Solving a problem of F. Jordan, we show that for every unbounded tower set of reals X of cardinality aleph_1, the space Cp(X) is productively FU. In particular, the set X is productively gamma. 2. Solving problems of Scheepers and Weiss, and proving a conjecture of Babinkostova-Scheepers, we prove that, assuming CH, there are gamma spaces whose product is not even Menger. 3. Solving a problem of Scheepers-Tall, we show that the properties gamma and Gerlits--Nagy (*) are preserved by Cohen forcing. Moreover, every Hurewicz space that Remains Hurewicz in a Cohen extension must be Rothberger (and thus (*)). We apply our results to solve a large number of additional problems, and use Arhangel'skii duality to obtain results concerning local properties of function spaces and countable topological groups.

Products of Menger spaces in the Miller model

We prove that in the Miller model the Menger property is preserved by finite products of metrizable spaces. This answers several open questions and gives another instance of the interplay between classical forcing posets with fusion and combinatorial covering properties in topology.

Completely Baire spaces, Menger spaces, and projective sets

W. Hurewicz proved that analytic Menger sets of reals are $σ$-compact and that co-analytic completely Baire sets of reals are completely metrizable. It is natural to try to generalize these theorems to projective sets. This has previously been accomplished by $V = L$ for projective counterexamples, and the Axiom of Projective Determinacy for positive results. For the first problem, the first author, S. Todorcevic, and S. Tokgöz have produced a finer analysis with much weaker axioms. We produce a similar analysis for the second problem, showing the two problems are essentially equivalent. We also construct in ZFC a separable metrizable space with $ω$-th power completely Baire, yet lacking a dense completely metrizable subspace. This answers a question of Eagle and Tall in Abstract Model Theory.

Products of Hurewicz spaces in the Laver model

This article is devoted to the interplay between forcing with fusion and combinatorial covering properties. We illustrate this interplay by proving that in the Laver model for the consistency of the Borel's conjecture, the product of any two metrizable spaces with the Hurewicz property has the Menger property.

Internal characterizations of productively Lindelöf spaces

We present an internal characterization for the productively Lindelöf property, thus answering a long-standing problem attributed to Tamano. We also present some results about the relation Alster spaces vs. productively Lindelöf spaces.

Productively Lindelöf spaces of countable tightness

Michael asked whether every productively Lindelöf space is powerfully Lindelöf. Building of work of Alster and De la Vega, assuming the Continuum Hypothesis, we show that every productively Lindelöf space of countable tightness is powerfully Lindelöf. This strengthens a result of Tall and Tsaban. The same methods also yield new proofs of results of Arkhangel'skii and Buzyakova. Furthermore, assuming the Continuum Hypothesis, we show that a productively Lindelöf space $X$ is powerfully Lindelöf if every open cover of $X^ω$ admits a point-continuum refinement consisting of basic open sets. This strengthens a result of Burton and Tall. Finally, we show that separation axioms are not relevant to Michael's question: if there exists a counterexample (possibly not even $\mathsf{T}_0$), then there exists a regular (actually, zero-dimensional) counterexample.

Non-meager free sets and independent families

Our main result is that, given a collection $\mathcal{R}$ of meager relations on a Polish space $X$ such that $|\mathcal{R}|\leqω$, there exists a dense Baire subspace $F$ of $X$ (equivalently, a nowhere meager subset $F$ of $X$) such that $F$ is $R$-free for every $R\in\mathcal{R}$. This generalizes a recent result of Banakh and Zdomskyy. As an application, we show that there exists a non-meager independent family on $ω$, and define the corresponding cardinal invariant. Furthermore, assuming Martin's Axiom for countable posets, our result can be strengthened by substituting "$|\mathcal{R}|\leqω$" with "$|\mathcal{R}|<\mathfrak{c}$" and "Baire" with "completely Baire".

Infinite powers and Cohen reals

We give a consistent example of a zero-dimensional separable metrizable space $Z$ such that every homeomorphism of $Z^ω$ acts like a permutation of the coordinates almost everywhere. Furthermore, this permutation varies continuously. This shows that a result of Dow and Pearl is sharp, and gives some insight into an open problem of Terada. Our example $Z$ is simply the set of $ω_1$ Cohen reals, viewed as a subspace of $2^ω$.

Topological properties of function spaces over ordinals

A topological space $X$ is said to be an Ascoli space if any compact subset $K$ of $C_k(X)$ is evenly continuous. This definition is motivated by the classical Ascoli theorem. We study the $k_R$-property and the Ascoli property of $C_p(κ)$ and $C_k(κ)$ over ordinals $κ$. We prove that $C_p(κ)$ is always an Ascoli space, while $C_p(κ)$ is a $k_R$-space iff the cofinality of $κ$ is countable. In particular, this provides the first $C_p$-example of an Ascoli space which is not a $k_R$-space, namely $C_p(ω_1)$. We show that $C_k(κ)$ is Ascoli iff $cf(κ)$ is countable iff $C_k(κ)$ is metrizable.

Menger remainders of topological groups

In this paper we discuss what kind of constrains combinatorial covering properties of Menger, Scheepers, and Hurewicz impose on remainders of topological groups. For instance, we show that such a remainder is Hurewicz if and only it is $σ$-compact. Also, the existence of a Scheepers non-$σ$-compact remainder of a topological group follows from CH and yields a $P$-point, and hence is independent of ZFC. We also make an attempt to prove a dichotomy for the Menger property of remainders of topological groups in the style of Arhangel'skii.

The Ascoli property for function spaces

The paper deals with Ascoli spaces $C_p(X)$ and $C_k(X)$ over Tychonoff spaces $X$. The class of Ascoli spaces $X$, i.e. spaces $X$ for which any compact subset $K$ of $C_k(X)$ is evenly continuous, essentially includes the class of $k_{\mathbb R}$-spaces. First we prove that if $C_p(X)$ is Ascoli, then it is $κ$-Fréchet-Urysohn. If $X$ is cosmic, then $C_p(X)$ is Ascoli iff it is $κ$-Fr'echet-Urysohn. This leads to the following extension of a result of Morishita: If for a Čech-complete space $X$ the space $C_p(X)$ is Ascoli, then $X$ is scattered. If $X$ is scattered and stratifiable, then $C_p(X)$ is an Ascoli space. Consequently: (a) If $X$ is a complete metrizable space, then $C_p(X)$ is Ascoli iff $X$ is scattered. (b) If $X$ is a Čech-complete Lindelöf space, then $C_p(X)$ is Ascoli iff $X$ is scattered iff $C_p(X)$ is Fréchet-Urysohn. Moreover, we prove that for a paracompact space $X$ of point-countable type the following conditions are equivalent: (i) $X$ is locally compact. (ii) $C_k(X)$ is a $k_{\mathbb R}$-space. (iii) $C_k(X)$ is an Ascoli space. The Asoli spaces $C_k(X,[0,1])$ are also studied.

Every filter is homeomorphic to its square

We show that every filter $\mathcal{F}$ on $ω$, viewed as a subspace of $2^ω$, is homeomorphic to $\mathcal{F}^2$. This generalizes a theorem of van Engelen, who proved that this holds for Borel filters.

Arhangel'ski\uı sheaf amalgamations in topological groups

We consider amalgamation properties of convergent sequences in topological groups and topological vector spaces. The main result of this paper is that, for arbitrary topological groups, Nyikos's property $α_{1.5}$ is equivalent to Arhangel'ski\uı's formally stronger property $α_1$. This result solves a problem of Shakhmatov (2002), and its proof uses a new perturbation argument. We also prove that there is a topological space $X$ such that the space $C_p(X)$ of continuous real-valued functions on $X$, with the topology of pointwise convergence, has Arhangel'ski\uı's property $α_1$ but is not countably tight. This result follows from results of Arhangel'ski\uı--Pytkeev, Moore and Todorčević, and provides a new solution, with remarkable properties, to a problem of Averbukh and Smolyanov (1968) concerning topological vector spaces. The Averbukh--Smolyanov problem was first solved by Plichko (2009), using Banach spaces with weaker locally convex topologies.
