On the Pytkeev property in spaces of continuous functions (II)

We prove that for each Polish space X, the space C(X) of continuous real-valued functions on X satisfies a strong version of the Pytkeev property, if endowed with the compact-open topology. (This shows that whereas it need not be metrizable, it is "very close" to that.) We also consider the Pytkeev property in the case where C(X) is endowed with the topology of pointwise convergence.

On the length of chains of proper subgroups covering a topological group

We prove that if an ultrafilter L is not coherent to a Q-point, then each analytic non-sigma-bounded topological group G admits an increasing chain of its proper subgroups such that: (i) U_{a in b(L)} G_a=G; and $(ii)$ For every sigma-bounded subgroup H of G there exists a such that H is a subset of G_a. In case of the group Sym(w) of all permutations of w with the topology inherited from w^w this improves upon earlier results of S. Thomas.

Menger's covering property and groupwise density

We establish a surprising connection between Menger's classical covering property and Blass's modern combinatorial notion of groupwise density. This connection implies a short proof of the groupwise density bound on the additivity number for Menger's property.

Combinatorial images of sets of reals and semifilter trichotomy

Using a dictionary translating a variety of classical and modern covering properties into combinatorial properties of continuous images, we get a simple way to understand the interrelations between these properties in ZFC and in the realm of the trichotomy axiom for upward closed families of sets of natural numbers. While it is now known that the answer to the Hurewicz 1927 problem is positive, it is shown here that semifilter trichotomy implies a negative answer to a slightly weaker form of this problem.

On M-separability of countable spaces and function spaces

We study M-separability as well as some other combinatorial versions of separability. In particular, we show that the set-theoretic hypothesis b=d implies that the class of selectively separable spaces is not closed under finite products, even for the spaces of continuous functions with the topology of pointwise convergence. We also show that there exists no maximal M-separable countable space in the model of Frankiewicz, Shelah, and Zbierski in which all closed P-subspaces of w^* admit an uncountable family of nonempty open mutually disjoint subsets. This answers several questions of Bella, Bonanzinga, Matveev, and Tkachuk.

Sequential properties of function spaces with the compact-open topology

Let M be the countably infinite metric fan. We show that C_k(M,2) is sequential and contains a closed copy of Arens space S_2. It follows that if X is metrizable but not locally compact, then C_k(X) contains a closed copy of S_2, and hence does not have the property AP. We also show that, for any zero-dimensional Polish space X, C_k(X,2) is sequential if and only if X is either locally compact or the derived set X' is compact. In the case that X is a non-locally compact Polish space whose derived set is compact, we show that all spaces C_k(X, 2) are homeomorphic, having the topology determined by an increasing sequence of Cantor subspaces, the n-th one nowhere dense in the (n+1)-st.

A new Lindelof topological group

We show that the subsemigroup of the product of w_1-many circles generated by the L-space constructed by J. Moore is again an L-space. This leads to a new example of a Lindelof topological group. The question whether all finite powers of this group are Lindelof remains open.

The topological structure of (homogeneous) spaces and groups with countable cs*-character

In this paper we introduce and study three new cardinal topological invariants called the cs*, cs-, and sb-characters. The class of topological spaces with countable cs*-character is closed under many topological operations and contains all aleph-spaces and all spaces with point-countable cs*-network. Our principal result states that each non-metrizable sequential topological group with countable cs*-character has countable pseudo-character and contains an open $k_ω$-subgroup.

o-Boundedness of free topological groups

Assuming the absence of Q-points (which is consistent with ZFC) we prove that the free topological group $F(X)$ over a Tychonov space $X$ is $o$-bounded if and only if every continuous metrizable image $T$ of $X$ satisfies the selection principle $U_{fin}(O,Ω)$ (the latter means that for every sequence $ _{n\in w}$ of open covers of $T$ there exists a sequence $ _{n\in w}$ such that $v_n\in [u_n]^{<w}$ and for every $F\in [X]^{<w}$ there exists $n\in w$ with $F\subset\cup v_n$). This characterization gives a consistent answer to a problem posed by C. Hernandes, D. Robbie, and M. Tkachenko in 2000.

Fréchet-Urysohn fans in free topological groups

In this paper we answer the question of T. Banakh and M. Zarichnyi constructing a copy of the Fréchet-Urysohn fan $S_\w$ in a topological group $G$ admitting a functorial embedding $[0,1]\subset G$. The latter means that each autohomeomorphism of $[0,1]$ extends to a continuous homomorphism of $G$. This implies that many natural free topological group constructions (e.g. the constructions of the Markov free topological group, free abelian topological group, free totally bounded group, free compact group) applied to a Tychonov space $X$ containing a topological copy of the space $\IQ$ of rationals give topological groups containing $S_\w$.

Can a Borel group be generated by a Hurewicz subspace?

In this paper we formulate three problems concerning topological properties of sets generating Borel non-sigma-compact groups. In case of the concrete F_σδ-subgroup of the Cantor group this gives an equivalent reformulation of the Scheepers diagram problem.

o-Boundedness of free objects over a Tychonoff space

In this paper we characterize [strict] o-boundedness of the free (abelian) topological group F(X) (A(X)) as well as the free locally-convex linear topological space L(X) in terms of properties of a Tychonoff space X. These properties appear to be close to so-called selection principles, which permits us to show, that (it is consistent with ZFC that) the property of Hurewicz (Menger) is l-invariant. This gives a method of construction of OF-undetermined topological groups with strong combinatorial properties.
