Relativistic description of dense matter equation of state and compatibility with neutron star observables: a Bayesian approach

The general behavior of the nuclear equation of state (EOS), relevant for the description of neutron stars (NS), is studied within a Bayesian approach applied to a set of models based on a density dependent relativistic mean field description of nuclear matter. The EOS is subjected to a minimal number of constraints based on nuclear saturation properties and the low density pure neutron matter EOS obtained from a precise next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^{3}$LO) calculation in chiral effective field theory ($χ$EFT). The posterior distributions of the model parameters obtained under these minimal constraints are employed to construct the distributions of various nuclear matter properties and NS properties such as radii, tidal deformabilites, central energy densities and speeds of sound etc. We found that 90% confidence interval (CI) for allowed NS mass - radius relationship and tidal deformabilites are compatible with GW170817 and recent NICER observations, without invoking the exotic degrees of freedom. A central speed-of-sound of the order of $\sqrt{2/3}$ $c$ is obtained. The maximum neutron star mass allowed by the model is 2.5 $M_\odot$.

Determination of the symmetry energy from the neutron star equation of state

We analyze the uncertainties introduced in the determination of the neutron star matter proton fraction, in a range of densities close to the saturation density, if the cold $β$-equilibrium neutron star matter equation of state (EoS) is known. In particular, we discuss the effect of neglecting the muon contribution and of considering that the energy density of nuclear matter is well described by taking only terms until second order in the proton-neutron asymmetry. It is shown that two types of uncertainties may be associated with the extraction of the symmetry energy from the $β$-equilibrium equation of state: an overestimation if terms above the parabolic approximation on the asymmetry parameter are neglected, or an underestimation if the muon contribution is not considered. The effect of the uncertainty on the symmetric nuclear matter EoS on the determination of the proton fraction is discussed. It could be shown that the neutron star mass-radius curve is sensitive to the parabolic approximation on the asymmetry parameter.

Hybrid stars from a constrained equation of state

We determine, within a meta-model, the properties of the nuclear matter equation of state (EoS) that allow for a phase transition to deconfinement matter. It is shown that the properties that define the isoscalar channel are the ones that are affected, in particular, a phase transition implies much larger values of the skewness and kurtosis. The effect of multi-quark interaction channels in the description of the quark phase in hybrid stars is also studied. NS properties, such as the mass and radius of the quark core, show an interplay dependence between the 8-quark vector and the 4-quark isovector-vector interactions. We show that low mass NS, $M\sim 1.4 M_\odot$, may already contain a quark core, and satisfy all existing NS observational constraints. We discuss the strangeness content of the quark core and its influence on the speed of sound.

Constraints on high density equation of state from maximum neutron star mass

The low density nuclear matter equation of state is strongly constrained by nuclear properties, however, for constraining the high density equation of state it is necessary to resort to indirect information obtained from the observation of neutron stars, compact objects that may have a central density several times nuclear matter saturation density, $n_0$. Taking a meta-modelling approach to generate a huge set of equation of state that satisfy nuclear matter properties close to $n_0$ and that do not contain a first order phase transition, the possibility of constraining the high density equation of state was investigated. The entire information obtained from the GW170817 event for the probability distribution of $\tildeΛ$ was used to make a probabilistic inference of the EOS, which goes beyond the constraints imposed by nuclear matter properties. Nuclear matter properties close to saturation, below $2n_0$, do not allow us to distinguish between equations of state that predict different neutron star (NS) maximum masses. This is, however, not true if the equation of state is constrained at low densities by the tidal deformability of the NS merger associated to GW170817. Above $3n_0$, differences may be large, for both approaches, and, in particular, the pressure and speed of sound of the sets studied do not overlap, showing that the knowledge of the NS maximum mass may give important information on the high density EOS. Narrowing the maximum mass uncertainty interval will have a sizeable effect on constraining the high density EOS.

Crust-core transition of a neutron star: effect of the temperature under strong magnetic fields

The effect of temperature on the crust-core transition of a magnetar is studied. The thermodynamical spinodals are used to calculate the transition region within a relativistic mean-field approach for the equation of state. Magnetic fields with intensities $5\times 10^{16}$ G and $5\times 10 ^{17}$ G are considered. It is shown that the effect on the extension of the crust-core transition is washed away for temperatures above $10^{9}$ K for magnetic field intensities $ \lesssim 5\times 10^{16}$ G but may still persist if a magnetic field as high as $5\times 10 ^{17}$G is considered. For temperatures below that value, the effect of the magnetic field on crust-core transition is noticeable and grows as the temperature decreases and, in particular, it is interesting to identify the existence of disconnected non-homogeneous matter above the $B=0$ crust core transition density. Models with different symmetry energy slopes at saturation show quite different behaviors. In particular, a model with a large slope, as suggested by the recent results of PREX-2, predicts the existence of up to four disconnected regions of non-homogeneous matter above the zero magnetic field crust-core transition density.

Unveiling the nuclear matter EoS from neutron star properties: a supervised machine learning approach

We explore supervised machine learning methods in extracting the non-linear maps between neutron stars (NS) observables and the equation of state (EoS) of nuclear matter. Using a Taylor expansion around saturation density, we have generated a set of model independent EoS describing stellar matter constrained by nuclear matter parameters that are thermodynamically consistent, causal, and consistent with astrophysical observations. From this set, the full non-linear dependencies of the NS tidal deformability and radius on the nuclear matter parameters were learned using two distinct machine learning methods. Due to the high accuracy of the learned non-linear maps, we were able to analyze the impact of each nuclear matter parameter on the NS observables, identify dependencies on the EoS properties beyond linear correlations and predict which stars allow us to draw strong constraints.

Hybrid stars with large strange quark cores constrained by GW170817

We analyze the impact of several multi-quark interaction channels on the properties of hybrid stars. Four and eight vector interactions were included in the $SU(3)$ NJL model to describe the quark matter, and all vector like interactions were investigated. The hybrid stars were built starting from an hadronic EoS that satisfy presently accepted nuclear matter properties and considering the quark model constrained by the vacuum properties of several light mesons. The interplay between the 8-quark vector interaction and the 4-quark isovector-vector interaction determine the size of the quark core and its strangeness content. The inclusion of a isovector-vector interaction is essential to obtain large $s$-quark contents and a smaller central speed of sound, although this interaction pushes the onset of quarks to larger densities. It is observed that low mass stars, with a mass below 1.4$M_\odot$, may contain a quark core but with small strangeness content. It is shown that the presently existing mass and tidal deformability constraints from NS observations allow for the existence of hybrid stars with a large strangeness content and large quark cores for binary mass ratios $q=M_2/M_1\gtrsim 0.85$.

Effect of the crust on neutron star empirical relations

We analyze how the crust equation of state affects several neutron star properties and how it impacts on possible constraints inferred from astrophysical observations. Using three distinct crusts, we generate three sets of model-independent equations of state describing stellar matter from a Taylor expansion around saturation density. The equations of state are thermodynamically consistent, causal, and compatible with astrophysical observations. The relations between the tidal deformability $Λ$ and compactness $C$, Love number $k_2$ and radius of neutron star with mass $M$ are studied, and the effect of the crust equation of state on these relations analyzed. In most of the relations, the impact of the crust equation of state is not larger that 2\%. If, however, a fixed neutron star mass is considered, the relation between the tidal deformability and the radius depends on the crust. We have found that the relation $Λ_{M_i} = αR_{M_i}^β$ becomes almost exact and crust independent for massive neutron stars. It is shown that it is possible to determine the tidal deformability of an 1.4$M_\odot$ star from the GW179817 effective tidal deformability $\tildeΛ$ with an accuracy of at least $\approx 10\%$. A high correlation between $\tildeΛ$ and the radius of the most massive star of the neutron star binary was confirmed, however, it was demonstrated that the crust has an effect of $\approx 14\%$ on this relation. We have found that the relation $Λ_1/Λ_2=q^a$ depends on $M_{\text{chirp}}$ as $a\sim \sqrt{M_{\text{chirp}}}$.

Quark matter in light neutron stars

Higher-order repulsive interactions are included in the three-flavor NJL model in order to describe the quark phase of an hybrid star. The effect of 4-quark and 8-quark vector-isoscalar interactions in the stability of hybrid star configurations is analyzed. The presence of a 8-quark vector-isoscalar channel is seen to be crucial in generating large quark branches in the $M(R)$ diagram. This is due to its stiffening effect on the quark matter equation of state which arises from the non-linear density dependence of the speed of sound. This additional interaction channel allows for the appearance of a quark core at moderately low NS masses, $\sim 1M_{\odot}$, and provides the required repulsion to preserve the star stability up to $\sim2.1M_{\odot}$. Furthermore, we show that both the heaviest NS mass generated, $M_{\text{max}}$, and its radii, $R_{\text{max}}$, are quite sensitive to the strength of 8-quark vector-isoscalar channel, leading to a considerable decrease of $R_{\text{max}}$ as the coupling increases. This behavior imprints a considerable deviation from the purely hadronic matter equation of state in the $Λ(M)$ diagram, which might be a possible signature of the quark matter existence, even for moderately low NS masses, $\sim 1.4\, M_\odot$. The resulting $M(R)$ and $Λ(R)$ relations are in accordance with the latest astrophysical constraints from NICER and Ligo/VIRGO observations, respectively.

Neutron stars with large quark cores

We describe charge-neutral neutron star matter in $β-$equilibrium using hybrid equations of state, where a first-order phase transition from hadronic to quark matter is realized. The hadronic matter is described in a model-independent way by a Taylor expansion around saturation density $n_0$, while the three-flavor NJL model is used for the quark matter. Exploring the present uncertainty on the empirical parameters of nuclear matter and the parameter space of the NJL model, we construct two datasets of thermodynamically consistent and causal hybrid EoSs, compatible with astrophysical observations. We conclude that, to sustain a considerable quark core size, the intensity of the phase transition from hadron to quark matter cannot be strong, having a energy density gap below $200$ MeV/fm$^3$, and must occur at baryon densities not above four times the saturation density. A non zero but not too strong quark vector-isoscalar term and a weak vector isovector quark term are required. Large quark cores carrying almost half of the star mass are possible inside neutron stars with a maximum mass $\approx 2.2 M_\odot$. To get a considerable number of hybrid EoS predicting quark matter already inside neutron stars with a mass $\sim 1.4 M_\odot$, we require that the onset of quarks occurs in the range $1.3n_0$ and $2.5n_0$. Neutron stars with large quark cores corresponding to more than one fourth of the total star mass, are possible if the energy density gap and the pressure at transition are below 100 MeV/fm$^3$. However, under these constraints, the maximum neutron star mass is limited to $ \lesssim 2.06 M_{\odot}$. No strong signatures from quark matter were found on the radius and the tidal deformability for neutron star masses below $1.8\, M_\odot$.

Empirical constraints on the high-density equation of state from multi-messenger observables

We search for possible correlations between neutron star observables and thermodynamic quantities that characterize high density nuclear matter. We generate a set of model-independent equations of state describing stellar matter from a Taylor expansion around saturation density. Each equation of state which is a functional of the nuclear matter parameters is thermodynamically consistent, causal and compatible with astrophysical observations. We find that the neutron star tidal deformability and radius are strongly correlated with the pressure, the energy density and the sound velocity at different densities. Similar correlations are also exhibited by a large set of mean-field models based on non-relativistic and relativistic nuclear energy density functionals. These model independent correlations can be employed to constrain the equation of state at different densities above saturation from measurements of NS properties with multi-messenger observations. In particular, precise constraints on the radius of PSR J0030+0451 thanks to NICER observations would allow to better infer the properties of matter around two times the nuclear saturation density.

Magnetized QCD phase diagram: net-baryon susceptibilities

Employing the Polyakov extended Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model, we determine the net-baryon number fluctuations of magnetized three-flavor quark matter. We show that the magnetic field changes the nature of the strange quark transition from crossover to first-order at low temperatures. In fact, the strange quark undergoes multiple first-order phase transitions and several critical end points emerge in the phase diagram.

Net baryon-number fluctuations in magnetized quark matter

The kurtosis and skewness of net baryon-number fluctuations are studied for the magnetized phase diagram of three-flavor quark matter within the Polyakov extended Nambu$-$Jona-Lasinio model. Two models with magnetic catalysis and inverse magnetic catalysis are considered. Special attention is given to their behavior in the neighborhood of the light and strange critical end points (CEPs). Several isentropic trajectories that come close the CEPs are studied in order to analyze possible signatures of a CEP in the presence of external magnetic fields. The effect of the magnetic field on the velocity of sound, $v_s^2$, when both the light and strange CEPs are approached from the crossover region is also investigated by calculating their temperature and baryon chemical potential dependencies at fixed distances from these CEPs. Regions with large fluctuations but no CEP in nonmagnetized matter develop a CEP under the action of a strong magnetic field. Besides, the Landau quantization of the quark trajectories may result in the appearance of extra CEPs, in particular, in the strange sector for strong magnetic fields, identifiable by the net baryon-number fluctuations. Stiffer (smoother) fluctuations in the region of the CEP are characteristic of models that do not predict (do predict) the inverse magnetic catalysis at zero chemical potential. Particularly interesting is the ratio $χ^4_B/χ^2_B$ that has a more pronounced peak structure, indicating that it is eventually a more convenient probe for the search of a CEP. The speed of sound shows a much richer structure in magnetized quark matter and allows one to identify both chiral and deconfinement transitions.

The presence of a critical end point in the QCD phase diagram from the net-baryon number fluctuations

The net-baryon number fluctuations for three-flavor quark matter are computed within the Polyakov extended Nambu$-$Jona-Lasinio model. Two models with vanishing and nonvanishing vector interactions are considered. While the former predicts a critical end point (CEP) in the phase diagram, the latter predicts no CEP. We show that the nonmonotonic behavior of the susceptibilities in the phase diagram is still present even in the absence of a CEP. Therefore, from the nonmonotonic behavior of the susceptibilities solely, one cannot assume the existence of a CEP. We analyze other possible properties that may distinguish the two scenarios, and determine the behavior of the net-baryon number fluctuations and the velocity of sound along several isentropes, with moderate and small values. It is shown that the value of the susceptibilities ratios and the velocity of sound at two or three isentropic lines could possibly allow to distinguish both scenarios, a phase diagram with or without CEP. Smoother behaviors of these quantities may indicate the nonexistence of a CEP. We also discuss the critical behavior of the strange sector.

Multiple critical end points in magnetized three flavor quark matter

The magnetized phase diagram for three-flavor quark matter is studied within the Polyakov extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. The order parameters are analyzed with special emphasis on the strange quark condensate. We show that the presence of an external magnetic field induces several critical endpoints (CEPs) in the strange sector, which arise due to the multiple phase transitions that the strange quark undergoes. The spinodal and binodal regions of the phase transitions are shown to increase with external magnetic field strength. The influence of strong magnetic fields on the isentropic trajectories around the several CEPs is analyzed. A focusing effect is observed on the region towards the CEPs that are related with the strange quark phase transitions. Compared to the chiral transitions, the deconfinement transition turns out to be less sensitive to the external magnetic field and the crossover nature is preserved over the whole phase diagram.

Magnetized QCD phase diagram: critical end points for the strange quark phase transition driven by external magnetic fields

In this work we examine possible effects of an external magnetic field in the strongly interacting matter phase diagram. The study is performed using the Polyakov-Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. Possible consequences of the inverse magnetic catalysis effect on the phase diagram at both finite chemical potential and temperature are analyzed. We devote special emphasis on how the location of the multiple critical end points (CEPs) change in a magnetized medium: the presence of an external magnetic field induces several CEPs in the strange sector, which arise due to the multiple phase transitions that the strange quark undergoes. We also study the deconfinement transition which turns out to be less sensitive to the external magnetic field when compared to the quark phase transitions. The crossover nature of the deconfinement is preserved over the whole phase diagram.

Magnetized QCD phase diagram

Using the 2+1 flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model with the Polyakov loop, we determine the structure of the QCD phase diagram in an external magnetic field. Beyond the usual NJL model with constant couplings, we also consider a variant with a magnetic field dependent scalar coupling, which reproduces the Inverse Magnetic Catalysis (IMC) at zero chemical potential. We conclude that the IMC affects the location of the Critical End Point, and found indications that, for high enough magnetic fields, the chiral phase transition at zero chemical potential might change from an analytic to a first-order phase transition.

Light Clusters and Pasta Phases in Warm and Dense Nuclear Matter

The pasta phases are calculated for warm stellar matter in a framework of relativistic mean-field models, including the possibility of light cluster formation. Results from three different semiclassical approaches are compared with a quantum statistical calculation. Light clusters are considered as point-like particles, and their abundances are determined from the minimization of the free energy. The couplings of the light-clusters to mesons are determined from experimental chemical equilibrium constants and many-body quantum statistical calculations. The effect of these light clusters on the chemical potentials is also discussed. It is shown that including heavy clusters, light clusters are present until larger nucleonic densities, although with smaller mass fractions.
