Regularisation by regular noise

We show that perturbing ill-posed differential equations with (potentially very) smooth random processes can restore well-posedness -- even if the perturbation is (potentially much) more regular than the drift component of the solution. The noise considered is of fractional Brownian type, and the familiar regularity condition $α>1-1/(2H)$ is recovered for all non-integer $H>1$.

Boundary renormalisation of SPDEs

We consider the continuum parabolic Anderson model (PAM) and the dynamical $Φ^4$ equation on the $3$-dimensional cube with boundary conditions. While the Dirichlet solution theories are relatively standard, the case of Neumann/Robin boundary conditions gives rise to a divergent boundary renormalisation. Furthermore for $Φ^4_3$ a `boundary triviality' result is obtained: if one approximates the equation with Neumann boundary conditions and the usual bulk renormalisation, then the limiting process coincides with the one obtained using Dirichlet boundary conditions.

Singular paths spaces and applications

Motivated by recent applications in rough volatility and regularity structures, notably the notion of singular modelled distribution, we study paths, rough paths and related objects with a quantified singularity at zero. In a pure path setting this allows us to leverage on existing SLE Besov estimates to see that SLE traces takes values in a singular Hölder space, which quantifies a well-known boundary effect in the regime $κ< 1$. We then consider the integration theory against singular rough paths and some extensions thereof. This gives a method to reconcile, from a regularity structure point of view, different singular kernels used to construct (fractional) rough volatility models and an effective reduction to the stationary case which is crucial to apply general renormalisation methods.

Approximation of SDEs -- a stochastic sewing approach

We give a new take on the error analysis of approximations of stochastic differential equations (SDEs), utilizing and developing the stochastic sewing lemma of Lê (2020). This approach allows one to exploit regularization by noise effects in obtaining convergence rates. In our first application we show convergence (to our knowledge for the first time) of the Euler-Maruyama scheme for SDEs driven by fractional Brownian motions with non-regular drift. When the Hurst parameter is $H\in(0,1)$ and the drift is $\mathcal{C}^α$, $α\in[0,1]$ and $α>1-1/(2H)$, we show the strong $L_p$ and almost sure rates of convergence to be $((1/2+αH)\wedge 1) -\varepsilon$, for any $\varepsilon>0$. Our conditions on the regularity of the drift are optimal in the sense that they coincide with the conditions needed for the strong uniqueness of solutions from Catellier, Gubinelli (2016). In a second application we consider the approximation of SDEs driven by multiplicative standard Brownian noise where we derive the almost optimal rate of convergence $1/2-\varepsilon$ of the Euler-Maruyama scheme for $\mathcal{C}^α$ drift, for any $\varepsilon,α>0$.

On the regularisation of the noise for the Euler-Maruyama scheme with irregular drift

The strong rate of convergence of the Euler-Maruyama scheme for nondegenerate SDEs with irregular drift coefficients is considered. In the case of $α$-Hölder drift in the recent literature the rate $α/2$ was proved in many related situations. By exploiting the regularising effect of the noise more efficiently, we show that the rate is in fact arbitrarily close to $1/2$ for all $α>0$. The result extends to Dini continuous coefficients, while in $d=1$ also to all bounded measurable coefficients.

Porous media equations with multiplicative space-time white noise

The existence of martingale solutions for stochastic porous media equations driven by nonlinear multiplicative space-time white noise is established in spatial dimension one. The Stroock-Varopoulos inequality is identified as a key tool in the derivation of the corresponding estimates.

Nondivergence form quasilinear heat equations driven by space-time white noise

We give a Wong-Zakai type characterisation of the solutions of quasilinear heat equations driven by space-time white noise in $1+1$ dimensions. In order to show that the renormalisation counterterms are local in the solution, a careful arrangement of a few hundred terms is required. The main tool in this computation is a general integration by parts formula that provides a number of linear identities for the renormalisation constants.

Boundary regularity of stochastic PDEs

The boundary behaviour of solutions of stochastic PDEs with Dirichlet boundary conditions can be surprisingly - and in a sense, arbitrarily - bad: as shown by Krylov, for any $α>0$ one can find a simple $1$-dimensional constant coefficient linear equation whose solution at the boundary is not $α$-Hölder continuous. We obtain a positive counterpart of this: under some mild regularity assumptions on the coefficients, solutions of semilinear SPDEs on $C^1$ domains are proved to be $α$-Hölder continuous up to the boundary with some $α>0$.

A solution theory for quasilinear singular SPDEs

We give a construction allowing to construct local renormalised solutions to general quasilinear stochastic PDEs within the theory of regularity structures, thus greatly generalising the recent results of [BDH16,FG16,OW16]. Loosely speaking, our construction covers quasilinear variants of all classes of equations for which the general construction of [Hai14,BHZ16,CH16] applies, including in particular one-dimensional systems with KPZ-type nonlinearities driven by space-time white noise. In a less singular and more specific case, we furthermore show that the counterterms introduced by the renormalisation procedure are given by local functionals of the solution. The main feature of our construction is that it allows to exploit a number of existing results developed for the semilinear case, so that the number of additional arguments it requires is relatively small.

Singular SPDEs in domains with boundaries

We study spaces of modelled distributions with singular behaviour near the boundary of a domain that, in the context of the theory of regularity structures, allow one to give robust solution theories for singular stochastic PDEs with boundary conditions. The calculus of modelled distributions established in Hairer (Invent. Math. 198, 2014) is extended to this setting. We formulate and solve fixed point problems in these spaces with a class of kernels that is sufficiently large to cover in particular the Dirichlet and Neumann heat kernels. These results are then used to provide solution theories for the KPZ equation with Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions and for the 2D generalised parabolic Anderson model with Dirichlet boundary conditions. In the case of the KPZ equation with Neumann boundary conditions, we show that, depending on the class of mollifiers one considers, a "boundary renormalisation" takes place. In other words, there are situations in which a certain boundary condition is applied to an approximation to the KPZ equation, but the limiting process is the Hopf-Cole solution to the KPZ equation with a different boundary condition.

On stochastic differential equations with arbitrarily slow convergence rates for strong approximation in two space dimensions

In the recent article [Jentzen, A., Müller-Gronbach, T., and Yaroslavtseva, L., Commun. Math. Sci., 14(6), 1477--1500, 2016] it has been established that for every arbitrarily slow convergence speed and every natural number $d \in \{4,5,\ldots\}$ there exist $d$-dimensional stochastic differential equations (SDEs) with infinitely often differentiable and globally bounded coefficients such that no approximation method based on finitely many observations of the driving Brownian motion can converge in absolute mean to the solution faster than the given speed of convergence. In this paper we strengthen the above result by proving that this slow convergence phenomena also arises in two ($d=2$) and three ($d=3$) space dimensions.

Localization errors in solving stochastic partial differential equations in the whole space

Cauchy problems with SPDEs on the whole space are localized to Cauchy problems on a ball of radius $R$. This localization reduces various kinds of spatial approximation schemes to finite dimensional problems. The error is shown to be exponentially small. As an application, a numerical scheme is presented which combines the localization and the space and time discretisation, and thus is fully implementable.

A Feynman-Kac formula for stochastic Dirichlet problems

A representation formula for solutions of stochastic partial differential equations with Dirichlet boundary conditions is proved. The scope of our setting is wide enough to cover the general situation when the backward characteristics that appear in the usual formulation are not even defined in the Itô sense.

Local $L_\infty$-estimates, weak Harnack inequality, and stochastic continuity of solutions of SPDEs

We consider stochastic partial differential equations under minimal assumptions: the coefficients are merely bounded and measurable and satisfy the stochastic parabolicity condition. In particular, the diffusion term is allowed to be scaling-critical. We derive local supremum estimates with a stochastic adaptation of De Giorgi's iteration and establish a weak Harnack inequality for the solutions. The latter is then used to obtain pointwise almost sure continuity.

On the boundedness of solutions of SPDEs

In this paper estimates for the uniform norm of solutions of parabolic SPDEs are derived. The result is obtained through iteration techniques, motivated by the work of Moser in deterministic settings. As an application of the main result, solvability of a class of semilinear SPDEs is derived.
