Erratum: Dispersion of gravitational waves in cold spherical interstellar medium

The study published in IJMPD 27(4):1850040, 2018 provided a numerical result for the frequency-shift of GWs due to dispersion in interstellar medium. In order to adjust the metric functions of the originally improperly matched `background' spacetime in sections 2.1, the authors have adopted Darmois--Israel junction conditions. In section 4.1 the code used in the original paper erroneously computed the magnitude of frequency-shift for the transient event GW150914 due to a missing conversion factor. In both cases where numerical errors and potential contradictions have been identified and eliminated, adjustments were undertaken in order to maintain consistency with closely-related earlier studies.

Fast prediction and evaluation of eccentric inspirals using reduced-order models

A large number of theoretically predicted waveforms are required by matched-filtering searches for the gravitational-wave signals produced by compact binary coalescence. In order to substantially alleviate the computational burden in gravitational-wave searches and parameter estimation without degrading the signal detectability, we propose a novel reduced-order-model (ROM) approach with applications to adiabatic 3PN-accurate inspiral waveforms of sources that evolve on either highly or slightly eccentric orbits. We provide a singular-value decomposition-based reduced-basis method in the frequency domain to generate reduced-order approximations of any gravitational waves with acceptable accuracy and precision within the parameter range of the model. We construct efficient reduced bases comprised of a relatively small number of the most relevant waveforms over 3-dimensional parameter-space covered by the template bank (total mass $2.15M_{\odot} \leq M \leq 215M_{\odot}$, mass ratio $0.01 \leq q \leq 1$, and initial orbital eccentricity $0 \leq e_{0} \leq 0.95$). The ROM is designed to predict signals in the frequency band from 10 Hz to 2 kHz for aLIGO and aVirgo design sensitivity. Beside moderating the data reduction, finer sampling of fiducial templates improves the accuracy of surrogates. Considerable increase in the speedup from several hundreds to thousands can be achieved by evaluating surrogates for low-mass systems especially when combined with high-eccentricity.

Dispersion of gravitational waves in cold spherical interstellar medium

We investigate the propagation of locally plane, small-amplitude, monochromatic gravitational waves through cold compressible interstellar gas in order to provide a more accurate picture of expected waveforms for direct detection. The quasi-isothermal gas is concentrated in a spherical symmetric cloud held together by self-gravitation. Gravitational waves can be treated as linearized perturbations on the background inner Schwarzschild spacetime. The perturbed quantities lead to the field equations governing the gas dynamics and describe the interaction of gravitational waves with matter. The resulted field equations decouple asymptotically for slowly varying short waves to a set of three PDEs of different orders of magnitude. A second-order WKB method provides transport equations for the wave amplitudes. The influence of background curvature already appears in the first-order amplitudes, which gives rise to diffraction. We have shown that the transport equation of these amplitudes provides numerical solutions for the frequency-alteration. The energy dissipating process is responsible for decreasing frequency. The decrease is significantly smaller than the magnitude of the original frequency and exhibits a power-law relationship between original and decreased frequencies. The frequency deviation was examined particularly for the transient signal GW150914. Considering AGNs as larger background structures and high-frequency signals emitted by BNS mergers, the frequency-deviation grows large enough to be relevant in future GW-observations with increased sensitivity.

Eccentric first post-Newtonian waveforms for compact binaries in frequency domain with Hansen coefficients

The inspiral and merger of supermassive black hole binary systems with high orbital eccentricity are among the promising sources of the advanced gravitational wave observatories. In this paper we derive analytic ready-to-use first post-Newtonian eccentric waveform in Fourier domain with the use of Hansen coefficients. Introducing generic perturbations of celestial mechanics we have generalized the Hansen expansion to the first post-Newtonian order which are then used to express the waveforms. Taking into account the high eccentricity of the orbit leads to the appearance of secular terms in the waveform which are eliminated with the introduction of a phase shift. The waveforms have a systematic structure and as our main result these are expressed in a tabular form.

Hyperbolic capture of compact binaries

Hyperbolic encounters of compact objects are common interactions in dense environments. During this process a significant amount of gravitational radiation is emitted depending on the parameters of the system. Here we give a parametric description of the radial motion valid for general binary orbits and the radiative energy and angular momentum losses for binaries with spinning components.

Parameter estimation for inspiraling eccentric compact binaries including pericenter precession

Inspiraling supermassive black hole binary systems with high orbital eccentricity are important sources for space-based gravitational wave (GW) observatories like the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). Eccentricity adds orbital harmonics to the Fourier transform of the GW signal and relativistic pericenter precession leads to a three-way splitting of each harmonic peak. We study the parameter estimation accuracy for such waveforms with different initial eccentricity using the Fisher matrix method and a Monte Carlo sampling of the initial binary orientation. The eccentricity improves the parameter estimation by breaking degeneracies between different parameters. In particular, we find that the source localization precision improves significantly for higher-mass binaries due to eccentricity. The typical sky position errors are $\sim1 $deg for a nonspinning, $10^7\,M_{\odot}$ equal-mass binary at redshift $z=1$, if the initial eccentricity 1 yr before merger is $e_0\sim 0.6$. Pericenter precession does not affect the source localization accuracy significantly, but it does further improve the mass and eccentricity estimation accuracy systematically by a factor of 3--10 for masses between $10^6$ and $10^7\,M_{\odot}$ for $e_0 \sim 0.3$.

Gravitational waves from spinning eccentric binaries

This paper is to introduce a new software called CBwaves which provides a fast and accurate computational tool to determine the gravitational waveforms yielded by generic spinning binaries of neutron stars and/or black holes on eccentric orbits. This is done within the post-Newtonian (PN) framework by integrating the equations of motion and the spin precession equations while the radiation field is determined by a simultaneous evaluation of the analytic waveforms. In applying CBwaves various physically interesting scenarios have been investigated. In particular, we have studied the appropriateness of the adiabatic approximation, and justified that the energy balance relation is indeed insensitive to the specific form of the applied radiation reaction term. By studying eccentric binary systems it is demonstrated that circular template banks are very ineffective in identifying binaries even if they possess tiny residual orbital eccentricity. In addition, by investigating the validity of the energy balance relation we show that, on contrary to the general expectations, the post-Newtonian approximation should not be applied once the post-Newtonian parameter gets beyond the critical value $\sim 0.08-0.1$. Finally, by studying the early phase of the gravitational waves emitted by strongly eccentric binary systems---which could be formed e.g. in various many-body interactions in the galactic halo---we have found that they possess very specific characteristics which may be used to identify these type of binary systems.

Accretion processes in magnetically and tidally perturbed Schwarzschild black holes

We study the accretion process in the region of the Preston-Poisson space-time describing a Schwarzschild black hole perturbed by asymptotically uniform magnetic field and axisymmetric tidal structures. We find that the accretion disk shrinks and the marginally stable orbit shifts towards the black hole with the perturbation. The radiation intensity of the accretion disk increases, while the radius where radiation is maximal remains unchanged. The spectrum is blue-shifted. Finally, the conversion efficiency of accreting mass into radiation is decreased by both the magnetic and the tidal perturbations.

Gravitational waves from binaries on unbound orbits

A generalized true anomaly-type parametrization, convenient to describe both bound and open orbits of a two-body system in general relativity is introduced. A complete description of the time evolution of both the radial and of the angular equations of a binary system taking into account the first order post-newtonian (1PN) is given. The gravitational radiation field emitted by the system is computed in the 1PN approximation including higher multipole moments beyond the standard quadrupole term. The gravitational waveforms in the time domain are explicitly given up to the 1PN order for unbound orbits, but the results are also illustrated on binaries on elliptic orbits with special attention given to the effects of eccentricity.

Secular momentum transport by gravitational waves from spinning compact binaries

We present a closed system of coupled first order differential equations governing the secular linear momentum loss of a compact binary due to emitted gravitational waves, with the leading order relativistic and spin-orbit perturbations included. In order to close the system, the secular evolution equations of the linear momentum derived from the dissipative dynamics are supplemented with the secular evolutions of the coupled angular variables, as derived from the conservative dynamics.

Gravitational waveforms for spinning compact binaries

The rotation of the bodies and the eccentricity of the orbit have significant effects on the emitted gravitational radiation of binary systems. This work focuses on the evaluation of the gravitational wave polarization states for spinning compact binaries. We consider binaries on eccentric orbits and the spin-orbit interaction up to the 1.5 post-Newtonian order in a way which is independent of the parameterization of the orbit. The equations of motion for angular variables are included. The formal expressions of the polarization states are given with the inclusion of higher order corrections to the waveform.

Gravitational waveforms for finite mass binaries

One of the promising sources of gravitational radiation is a binary system composed of compact stars. It is an important question how the rotation of the bodies and the eccentricity of the orbit affect the detectable signal. Here we present a method to evaluate the gravitational wave polarization states for inspiralling compact binaries with comparable mass. We consider eccentric orbits and the spin-orbit contribution in the case of one spinning object up to 1.5 post-Newtonian order. For circular orbits our results are in agreement with existing calculations.

Orbital phase in inspiralling compact binaries

We derive the rate of change of the mean motion up to the second post-Newtonian order for inspiralling compact binaries with spin, mass quadrupole and magnetic dipole moments on eccentric orbits. We give this result in terms of orbital elements. We also present the related orbital phase for circular orbits.

Generalized true- and eccentric-anomaly parametrizations for the perturbed Kepler motion

The true- and eccentric-anomaly parametrizations of the Kepler motion are generalized to quasiperiodic orbits by considering perturbations of the radial part of kinetic energy as a series in the negative powers of the orbital radius. A toolbox of methods for averaging observables in terms of the energy $E$ and angular momentum $L$ is developed. A broad range of systems governed by the generic Brumberg force, as well as recent applications of the theory of gravitational radiation involve integrals over a period of motion. These integrals are evaluated by using the residue theorem. It is shown that the pole of the integrand is located in the origin and that under certain circumstances an additional pole emerges.

Gravitational waveforms from a Lense-Thirring system

The construction of ready to use templates for gravitational waves from spinning binaries is an important challenge in the investigation of detectable gravitational wave signals. Here we present a method to evaluate the gravitational wave polarization states for inspiralling compact binaries in the extreme mass ratio limit. We discuss the effects caused by the rotation of the central massive object for eccentric orbits in the Lense-Thirring approximation and give the formal expressions of the polarization states including higher order corrections. Our results are in agreement with existing calculations for the spinless and circular orbit limits.

Self interaction of spins in binary systems

Beyond point mass effects various contributions add to the radiative evolution of compact binaries. We present all the terms up to the second post-Newtonian order contributing to the rate of increase of gravitational wave frequency and the number of gravitational wave cycles left until the final coalescence for binary systems with spin, mass quadrupole and magnetic dipole moments, moving on circular orbit. We evaluate these contributions for some famous or typical compact binaries and show that the terms representing the self interaction of individual spins, given for the first time here, are commensurable with the proper spin-spin contributions for the recently discovered double pulsar J0737-3039.

Self-interaction spin effects in inspiralling compact binaries

Gravitational radiation drives compact binaries through an inspiral phase towards a final coalescence. For binaries with\textit{spin, mass quadrupole and magnetic dipole moments}, various contributions add to this process, which is characterized by the rate of increase $df/dt$ of the gravitational wave frequency and the accumulated number $\mathcal{N}$ of gravitational wave cycles. We present here all contributions to $df/dt$ and $% \mathcal{N}$ up to the second post-Newtonian order. Among them we give for the first time the contributions due to the \textit{self-interaction of individual spins}. These are shown to be commensurable with the proper spin-spin contributions for the recently discovered J0737-3039 double pulsar, and argued to represent the first corrections to the radiation reaction in the Lense-Thirring approach.

An analytic approach to the late ISW effect in a Lambda dominated universe

The integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect in a Lambda dominated universe can be an important factor in the evolution of cosmic microwave background fluctuations. With the inclusion of cosmological constant we present the complete analytic solution of the covariant linear perturbations of the Einstein equations in the Newtonian gauge, in the case of a spatially flat (K=0), Friedman-Robertson-Walker (FRW) universe, filled with pressureless ideal fluid. We use the analytic time dependence of the perturbation potentials to derive the anisotropy power spectrum of the late ISW effect. We choose the scale invariant Harrison-Zeldovich spectrum for obtaining the C_l momenta and show the agreement of our results with earlier, numeric calculations.
