Mean Field Game-based Waveform Precoding Design for Mobile Crowd Integrated Sensing, Communication, and Computation Systems

Data collection and processing timely is crucial for mobile crowd integrated sensing, communication, and computation~(ISCC) systems with various applications such as smart home and connected cars, which requires numerous integrated sensing and communication~(ISAC) devices to sense the targets and offload the data to the base station~(BS) for further processing. However, as the number of ISAC devices growing, there exists intensive interactions among ISAC devices in the processes of data collection and processing since they share the common network resources. In this paper, we consider the environment sensing problem in the large-scale mobile crowd ISCC systems and propose an efficient waveform precoding design algorithm based on the mean field game~(MFG). Specifically, to handle the complex interactions among large-scale ISAC devices, we first utilize the MFG method to transform the influence from other ISAC devices into the mean field term and derive the Fokker-Planck-Kolmogorov equation, which models the evolution of the system state. Then, we derive the cost function based on the mean field term and reformulate the waveform precoding design problem. Next, we utilize the G-prox primal-dual hybrid gradient algorithm to solve the reformulated problem and analyze the computational complexity of the proposed algorithm. Finally, simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can solve the interactions among large-scale ISAC devices effectively in the ISCC process. In addition, compared with other baselines, the proposed waveform precoding design algorithm has advantages in improving communication performance and reducing cost function.

Energy-efficient Beamforming for RISs-aided Communications: Gradient Based Meta Learning

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have become a promising technology to meet the requirements of energy efficiency and scalability in future six-generation (6G) communications. However, a significant challenge in RISs-aided communications is the joint optimization of active and passive beamforming at base stations (BSs) and RISs respectively. Specifically, the main difficulty is attributed to the highly non-convex optimization space of beamforming matrices at both BSs and RISs, as well as the diversity and mobility of communication scenarios. To address this, we present a greenly gradient based meta learning beamforming (GMLB) approach. Unlike traditional deep learning based methods which take channel information directly as input, GMLB feeds the gradient of sum rate into neural networks. Coherently, we design a differential regulator to address the phase shift optimization of RISs. Moreover, we use the meta learning to iteratively optimize the beamforming matrices of BSs and RISs. These techniques make the proposed method to work well without requiring energy-consuming pre-training. Simulations show that GMLB could achieve higher sum rate than that of typical alternating optimization algorithms with the energy consumption by two orders of magnitude less.

Two-Dimensional Direction-of-Arrival Estimation Using Stacked Intelligent Metasurfaces

Stacked intelligent metasurfaces (SIM) are capable of emulating reconfigurable physical neural networks by relying on electromagnetic (EM) waves as carriers. They can also perform various complex computational and signal processing tasks. A SIM is fabricated by densely integrating multiple metasurface layers, each consisting of a large number of small meta-atoms that can control the EM waves passing through it. In this paper, we harness a SIM for two-dimensional (2D) direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation. In contrast to the conventional designs, an advanced SIM in front of the receiver array automatically carries out the 2D discrete Fourier transform (DFT) as the incident waves propagate through it. As a result, the receiver array directly observes the angular spectrum of the incoming signal. In this context, the DOA estimates can be readily obtained by using probes to detect the energy distribution on the receiver array. This avoids the need for power-thirsty radio frequency (RF) chains. To enable SIM to perform the 2D DFT, we formulate the optimization problem of minimizing the fitting error between the SIM's EM response and the 2D DFT matrix. Furthermore, a gradient descent algorithm is customized for iteratively updating the phase shift of each meta-atom in SIM. To further improve the DOA estimation accuracy, we configure the phase shift pattern in the zeroth layer of the SIM to generate a set of 2D DFT matrices associated with orthogonal spatial frequency bins. Additionally, we analytically evaluate the performance of the proposed SIM-based DOA estimator by deriving a tight upper bound for the mean square error (MSE). Our numerical simulations verify the capability of a well-trained SIM to perform DOA estimation and corroborate our theoretical analysis. It is demonstrated that a SIM having an optical computational speed achieves an MSE of $10^{-4}$ for DOA estimation.

Extremely large-scale multiple-input-multiple-output (XL-MIMO), which offers vast spatial degrees of freedom, has emerged as a potentially pivotal enabling technology for the sixth generation (6G) of wireless mobile networks. With its growing significance, both opportunities and challenges are concurrently manifesting. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of research on XL-MIMO wireless systems. In particular, we introduce four XL-MIMO hardware architectures: uniform linear array (ULA)-based XL-MIMO, uniform planar array (UPA)-based XL-MIMO utilizing either patch antennas or point antennas, and continuous aperture (CAP)-based XL-MIMO. We comprehensively analyze and discuss their characteristics and interrelationships. Following this, we introduce several electromagnetic characteristics and general distance boundaries in XL-MIMO. Given the distinct electromagnetic properties of near-field communications, we present a range of channel models to demonstrate the benefits of XL-MIMO. We further discuss and summarize signal processing schemes for XL-MIMO. It is worth noting that the low-complexity signal processing schemes and deep learning empowered signal processing schemes are reviewed and highlighted to promote the practical implementation of XL-MIMO. Furthermore, we explore the interplay between XL-MIMO and other emergent 6G technologies. Finally, we outline several compelling research directions for future XL-MIMO wireless communication systems.

The Falcon Series of Open Language Models

We introduce the Falcon series: 7B, 40B, and 180B parameters causal decoder-only models trained on a diverse high-quality corpora predominantly assembled from web data. The largest model, Falcon-180B, has been trained on over 3.5 trillion tokens of text--the largest openly documented pretraining run. Falcon-180B significantly outperforms models such as PaLM or Chinchilla, and improves upon concurrently developed models such as LLaMA 2 or Inflection-1. It nears the performance of PaLM-2-Large at a reduced pretraining and inference cost, making it, to our knowledge, one of the three best language models in the world along with GPT-4 and PaLM-2-Large. We report detailed evaluations, as well as a deep dive into the methods and custom tooling employed to pretrain Falcon. Notably, we report on our custom distributed training codebase, allowing us to efficiently pretrain these models on up to 4,096 A100s on cloud AWS infrastructure with limited interconnect. We release a 600B tokens extract of our web dataset, as well as the Falcon-7/40/180B models under a permissive license to foster open-science and accelerate the development of an open ecosystem of large language models.

Holographic MIMO Communications with Arbitrary Surface Placements: Near-Field LoS Channel Model and Capacity Limit

Envisioned as one of the most promising technologies, holographic multiple-input multiple-output (H-MIMO) recently attracts notable research interests for its great potential in expanding wireless possibilities and achieving fundamental wireless limits. Empowered by the nearly continuous, large and energy-efficient surfaces with powerful electromagnetic (EM) wave control capabilities, H-MIMO opens up the opportunity for signal processing in a more fundamental EM-domain, paving the way for realizing holographic imaging level communications in supporting the extremely high spectral efficiency and energy efficiency in future networks. In this article, we try to implement a generalized EM-domain near-field channel modeling and study its capacity limit of point-to-point H-MIMO systems that equips arbitrarily placed surfaces in a line-of-sight (LoS) environment. Two effective and computational-efficient channel models are established from their integral counterpart, where one is with a sophisticated formula but showcases more accurate, and another is concise with a slight precision sacrifice. Furthermore, we unveil the capacity limit using our channel model, and derive a tight upper bound based upon an elaborately built analytical framework. Our result reveals that the capacity limit grows logarithmically with the product of transmit element area, receive element area, and the combined effects of $1/{{d}_{mn}^2}$, $1/{{d}_{mn}^4}$, and $1/{{d}_{mn}^6}$ over all transmit and receive antenna elements, where $d_{mn}$ indicates the distance between each transmit and receive elements. Numerical evaluations validate the effectiveness of our channel models, and showcase the slight disparity between the upper bound and the exact capacity, which is beneficial for predicting practical system performance.

Stacked Intelligent Metasurface-Aided MIMO Transceiver Design

Next-generation wireless networks are expected to utilize the limited radio frequency (RF) resources more efficiently with the aid of intelligent transceivers. To this end, we propose a promising transceiver architecture relying on stacked intelligent metasurfaces (SIM). An SIM is constructed by stacking an array of programmable metasurface layers, where each layer consists of a massive number of low-cost passive meta-atoms that individually manipulate the electromagnetic (EM) waves. By appropriately configuring the passive meta-atoms, an SIM is capable of accomplishing advanced computation and signal processing tasks, such as multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) precoding/combining, multi-user interference mitigation, and radar sensing, as the EM wave propagates through the multiple layers of the metasurface, which effectively reduces both the RF-related energy consumption and processing delay. Inspired by this, we provide an overview of the SIM-aided MIMO transceiver design, which encompasses its hardware architecture and its potential benefits over state-of-the-art solutions. Furthermore, we discuss promising application scenarios and identify the open research challenges associated with the design of advanced SIM architectures for next-generation wireless networks. Finally, numerical results are provided for quantifying the benefits of wave-based signal processing in wireless systems.

Foundations of Quantum Federated Learning Over Classical and Quantum Networks

Quantum federated learning (QFL) is a novel framework that integrates the advantages of classical federated learning (FL) with the computational power of quantum technologies. This includes quantum computing and quantum machine learning (QML), enabling QFL to handle high-dimensional complex data. QFL can be deployed over both classical and quantum communication networks in order to benefit from information-theoretic security levels surpassing traditional FL frameworks. In this paper, we provide the first comprehensive investigation of the challenges and opportunities of QFL. We particularly examine the key components of QFL and identify the unique challenges that arise when deploying it over both classical and quantum networks. We then develop novel solutions and articulate promising research directions that can help address the identified challenges. We also provide actionable recommendations to advance the practical realization of QFL.

A Universal Framework for Holographic MIMO Sensing

This paper addresses the sensing space identification of arbitrarily shaped continuous antennas. In the context of holographic multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), a.k.a. large intelligent surfaces, these antennas offer benefits such as super-directivity and near-field operability. The sensing space reveals two key aspects: (a) its dimension specifies the maximally achievable spatial degrees of freedom (DoFs), and (b) the finite basis spanning this space accurately describes the sampled field. Earlier studies focus on specific geometries, bringing forth the need for extendable analysis to real-world conformal antennas. Thus, we introduce a universal framework to determine the antenna sensing space, regardless of its shape. The findings underscore both spatial and spectral concentration of sampled fields to define a generic eigenvalue problem of Slepian concentration. Results show that this approach precisely estimates the DoFs of well-known geometries, and verify its flexible extension to conformal antennas.

A Transmit-Receive Parameter Separable Electromagnetic Channel Model for LoS Holographic MIMO

To support the extremely high spectral efficiency and energy efficiency requirements, and emerging applications of future wireless communications, holographic multiple-input multiple-output (H-MIMO) technology is envisioned as one of the most promising enablers. It can potentially bring extra degrees-of-freedom for communications and signal processing, including spatial multiplexing in line-of-sight (LoS) channels and electromagnetic (EM) field processing performed using specialized devices, to attain the fundamental limits of wireless communications. In this context, EM-domain channel modeling is critical to harvest the benefits offered by H-MIMO. Existing EM-domain channel models are built based on the tensor Green function, which require prior knowledge of the global position and/or the relative distances and directions of the transmit/receive antenna elements. Such knowledge may be difficult to acquire in real-world applications due to extensive measurements needed for obtaining this data. To overcome this limitation, we propose a transmit-receive parameter separable channel model methodology in which the EM-domain (or holographic) channel can be simply acquired from the distance/direction measured between the center-points between the transmit and receive surfaces, and the local positions between the transmit and receive elements, thus avoiding extensive global parameter measurements. Analysis and numerical results showcase the effectiveness of the proposed channel modeling approach in approximating the H-MIMO channel, and achieving the theoretical channel capacity.

Towards enabling reliable immersive teleoperation through Digital Twin: A UAV command and control use case

This paper addresses the challenging problem of enabling reliable immersive teleoperation in scenarios where an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is remotely controlled by an operator via a cellular network. Such scenarios can be quite critical particularly when the UAV lacks advanced equipment (e.g., Lidar-based auto stop) or when the network is subject to some performance constraints (e.g., delay). To tackle these challenges, we propose a novel architecture leveraging Digital Twin (DT) technology to create a virtual representation of the physical environment. This virtual environment accurately mirrors the physical world, accounting for 3D surroundings, weather constraints, and network limitations. To enhance teleoperation, the UAV in the virtual environment is equipped with advanced features that maybe absent in the real UAV. Furthermore, the proposed architecture introduces an intelligent logic that utilizes information from both virtual and physical environments to approve, deny, or correct actions initiated by the UAV operator. This anticipatory approach helps to mitigate potential risks. Through a series of field trials, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed architecture in significantly improving the reliability of UAV teleoperation.

Holographic MIMO Communications: Theoretical Foundations, Enabling Technologies, and Future Directions

Future wireless systems are envisioned to create an endogenously holography-capable, intelligent, and programmable radio propagation environment, that will offer unprecedented capabilities for high spectral and energy efficiency, low latency, and massive connectivity. A potential and promising technology for supporting the expected extreme requirements of the sixth-generation (6G) communication systems is the concept of the holographic multiple-input multiple-output (HMIMO), which will actualize holographic radios with reasonable power consumption and fabrication cost. The HMIMO is facilitated by ultra-thin, extremely large, and nearly continuous surfaces that incorporate reconfigurable and sub-wavelength-spaced antennas and/or metamaterials. Such surfaces comprising dense electromagnetic (EM) excited elements are capable of recording and manipulating impinging fields with utmost flexibility and precision, as well as with reduced cost and power consumption, thereby shaping arbitrary-intended EM waves with high energy efficiency. The powerful EM processing capability of HMIMO opens up the possibility of wireless communications of holographic imaging level, paving the way for signal processing techniques realized in the EM-domain, possibly in conjunction with their digital-domain counterparts. However, in spite of the significant potential, the studies on HMIMO communications are still at an initial stage, its fundamental limits remain to be unveiled, and a certain number of critical technical challenges need to be addressed. In this survey, we present a comprehensive overview of the latest advances in the HMIMO communications paradigm, with a special focus on their physical aspects, their theoretical foundations, as well as the enabling technologies for HMIMO systems. We also compare the HMIMO with existing multi-antenna technologies, especially the massive MIMO, present various...

Electromagnetic Information Theory: Fundamentals, Modeling, Applications, and Open Problems

Traditional massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) information theory adopt non-physically consistent assumptions, including white-noised, scalar-quantity, far-field, discretized, and monochromatic EM fields, which mismatch the nature of the underlying electromagnetic (EM) fields supporting the physical layer of wireless communication systems. To incorporate EM laws into designing procedures of the physical layer, we first propose the novel concept of EM physical layer, whose backbone theory is called EM information theory (EIT). In this article, we systematically investigate the basic ideas and main results of EIT. First, we review the fundamental analytical tools of classical information theory and EM theory. Then, we introduce the modeling and analysis methodologies of EIT, including continuous field modeling, degrees of freedom, and mutual information analyses. Several EIT-inspired applications are discussed to illustrate how EIT guides the design of practical wireless systems. Finally, we point out the open problems of EIT, where further research efforts are required for EIT to construct a unified interdisciplinary theory.

Matching Game for Optimized Association in Quantum Communication Networks

Enabling quantum switches (QSs) to serve requests submitted by quantum end nodes in quantum communication networks (QCNs) is a challenging problem due to the heterogeneous fidelity requirements of the submitted requests and the limited resources of the QCN. Effectively determining which requests are served by a given QS is fundamental to foster developments in practical QCN applications, like quantum data centers. However, the state-of-the-art on QS operation has overlooked this association problem, and it mainly focused on QCNs with a single QS. In this paper, the request-QS association problem in QCNs is formulated as a matching game that captures the limited QCN resources, heterogeneous application-specific fidelity requirements, and scheduling of the different QS operations. To solve this game, a swap-stable request-QS association (RQSA) algorithm is proposed while considering partial QCN information availability. Extensive simulations are conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed RQSA algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed RQSA algorithm achieves a near-optimal (within 5%) performance in terms of the percentage of served requests and overall achieved fidelity, while outperforming benchmark greedy solutions by over 13%. Moreover, the proposed RQSA algorithm is shown to be scalable and maintain its near-optimal performance even when the size of the QCN increases.

A Generalized Electromagnetic-Domain Channel Modeling for LOS Holographic MIMO with Arbitrary Surface Placements

Holographic multiple-input multiple-output (H-MIMO) is considered as one of the most promising technologies to enable future wireless communications in supporting the expected extreme requirements, such as high energy and spectral efficiency. Empowered by the powerful capability in electromagnetic (EM) wave manipulations, H-MIMO has the potential to reach the fundamental limit of the wireless environment, and opens up the possibility of signal processing in the EM-domain, which needs to be depicted carefully from an EM perspective, especially the wireless channel. To this aim, we study the line-of-sight (LOS) H-MIMO communications with arbitrary surface placements and establish an exact expression of the wireless channel in the EM-domain. To further obtain a more explicit and computationally-efficient channel models, we solve the implicit integrals of the exact channel model with moderate and reasonable assumptions. Numerical studies are executed and the results show good agreements of our established approximated channel models to the exact channel model.

Semantics-Native Communication with Contextual Reasoning

Spurred by a huge interest in the post-Shannon communication, it has recently been shown that leveraging semantics can significantly improve the communication effectiveness across many tasks. In this article, inspired by human communication, we propose a novel stochastic model of System 1 semantics-native communication (SNC) for generic tasks, where a speaker has an intention of referring to an entity, extracts the semantics, and communicates its symbolic representation to a target listener. To further reach its full potential, we additionally infuse contextual reasoning into SNC such that the speaker locally and iteratively self-communicates with a virtual agent built on the physical listener's unique way of coding its semantics, i.e., communication context. The resultant System 2 SNC allows the speaker to extract the most effective semantics for its listener. Leveraging the proposed stochastic model, we show that the reliability of System 2 SNC increases with the number of meaningful concepts, and derive the expected semantic representation (SR) bit length which quantifies the extracted effective semantics. It is also shown that System 2 SNC significantly reduces the SR length without compromising communication reliability.
