Magnetic field-enhanced spin freezing in YBa2Cu3O6.45 at the verge of the competition between superconductivity and charge order

Using 63Cu NMR, we establish that the enhancement of spin order by a magnetic field H in YBa2Cu3O6.45 arises from a competition with superconductivity because the effect occurs for H perpendicular, but not parallel, to the CuO2 planes, and it persists up to field values comparable to Hc2. We also find that the spin-freezing has a glassy nature and that the frozen state onsets at a temperature which is independent of the magnitude of H. These results, together with the presence of a competing charge-ordering instability at nearby doping levels, are strikingly parallel to those previously obtained in La-214. This suggests a universal interpretation of magnetic field effects in underdoped cuprates where the enhancement of spin order by the field may not be the primary phenomenon but rather a byproduct of the competition between superconductivity and charge order. Low-energy spin fluctuations are manifested up to relatively high temperatures where they partially mask the signature of the pseudogap in 1/T1 data of planar Cu sites.

Inhomogeneous magnetism in the doped kagome lattice of LaCuO2.66

The hole-doped kagome lattice of Cu2+ ions in LaCuO2.66 was investigated by nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR), electron spin resonance (ESR), electrical resistivity, bulk magnetization and specific heat measurements. For temperatures above ~180 K, the spin and charge properties show an activated behavior suggestive of a narrow-gap semiconductor. At lower temperatures, the results indicate an insulating ground state which may or may not be charge ordered. While the frustrated spins in remaining patches of the original kagome lattice might not be directly detected here, the observation of coexisting non-magnetic sites, free spins and frozen moments reveals an intrinsically inhomogeneous magnetism. Numerical simulations of a 1/3-diluted kagome lattice rationalize this magnetic state in terms of a heterogeneous distribution of cluster sizes and morphologies near the site-percolation threshold.

Magnetic-field-induced charge-stripe order in the high temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3Oy

Electronic charges introduced in copper-oxide planes generate high-transition temperature superconductivity but, under special circumstances, they can also order into filaments called stripes. Whether an underlying tendency of charges to order is present in all cuprates and whether this has any relationship with superconductivity are, however, two highly controversial issues. In order to uncover underlying electronic orders, magnetic fields strong enough to destabilise superconductivity can be used. Such experiments, including quantum oscillations in YBa2Cu3Oy (a notoriously clean cuprate where charge order is not observed) have suggested that superconductivity competes with spin, rather than charge, order. Here, using nuclear magnetic resonance, we demonstrate that high magnetic fields actually induce charge order, without spin order, in the CuO2 planes of YBa2Cu3Oy. The observed static, unidirectional, modulation of the charge density breaks translational symmetry, thus explaining quantum oscillation results, and we argue that it is most likely the same 4a-periodic modulation as in stripe-ordered cuprates. The discovery that it develops only when superconductivity fades away and near the same 1/8th hole doping as in La2-xBaxCuO4 suggests that charge order, although visibly pinned by CuO chains in YBa2Cu3Oy, is an intrinsic propensity of the superconducting planes of high Tc cuprates.

Homogeneous vs. inhomogeneous coexistence of magnetic order and superconductivity probed by NMR in Co and K doped iron pnictides

In Ba(Fe0.95Co0.05)2As2 all of the 75As NMR intensity at the paramagnetic resonance position vanishes abruptly below Tonset(SDW)=56 K, indicating that magnetic (spin density wave) order is present in all of the sample volume, despite bulk superconductivity below Tc=15 K. The two phases thus coexist homogeneously at the microscopic scale. In Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2, on the other hand, the signal loss below Tonset(SDW)~75 K is not complete, revealing that magnetic order is bound to finite-size areas of the sample, while the remaining NMR signal shows a clear superconducting response below Tc=37 K. Thus, the two phases are not homogeneously mixed, at least for this potassium concentration. For both samples, spatial electronic and/or magnetic inhomogeneity is shown to characterize the NMR properties in the normal state.

Topotactic synthesis, structure and magnetic properties of a new hexagonal polytype of silver cobaltate(III) AgCoO2+δ

A new form of delafossite-type AgCoO2+δwas prepared using ion exchange from Na0.75CoO2 in molten AgNO3-NH4NO3 at 175 degrees C. Its structure was determined by Rietveld refinement from XRD data; it is hexagonal, space group P63/mmc, a = 2.871 and c = 12.222 Å. Its structure differs from previously reported AgCoO2 (R-3m, 3R polytype) by the stacking of Co-O layers; in the new phase the 2H stacking of the precursor Na0.75CoO2, consistent with a topotactic ion exchange of Na by Ag. The new phase is found to contain a slight oxygen excess (δ= 0.06). Magnetic susceptibility measurements show the absence of magnetic transition and a weak Curie term, consistent with the non-magnetic character of Co3+ ions.

Enhanced low-energy spin dynamics with diffusive character in the iron-based superconductor (La0.87Ca0.13)FePO: Analogy with high Tc cuprates (A short note)

In a recent NMR investigation of the iron-based superconductor (La0.87Ca0.13)FePO [Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 077006 (2008)] Y. Nakai et al. reported an anomalous behavior of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation of 31P nuclei in the superconducting state: The relaxation rate 1/T1 strongly depends on the measurement frequency and its T dependence does not show the typical decrease expected for the superconducting state. In this short note, we point out that these two observations bear similarity with the situation is some of the high Tc cuprates.

Similar glassy features in the NMR response of pure and disordered La1.88Sr0.12CuO4

High Tc superconductivity in La2-xSrxCuO4 coexists with (striped and glassy) magnetic order. Here, we report NMR measurements of the 139La spin-lattice relaxation, which displays a stretched-exponential time dependence, in both pure and disordered x=0.12 single crystals. An analysis in terms of a distribution of relaxation rates T1^-1 indicates that i) the spin-freezing temperature is spatially inhomogeneous with an onset at Tg(onset)=20 K for the pristine samples, and ii) the width of the T1^-1 distribution in the vicinity of Tg(onset) is insensitive to an ~1% level of atomic disorder in CuO2 planes. This suggests that the stretched-exponential 139La relaxation, considered as a manifestation of the systems glassiness, may not arise from quenched disorder.

Electronic texture of the thermoelectric oxide Na0.75CoO2

From 59Co and 23Na NMR, we demonstrate the impact of the Na+ vacancy ordering on the cobalt electronic states in Na0.75CoO2: at long time scales, there is neither a disproportionation into 75 % Co3+ and 25 % Co4+ states, nor a mixed-valence metal with a uniform Co3.25+ state. Instead, the system adopts an intermediate configuration in which 30 % of the lattice sites form an ordered pattern of localized Co3+ states. Above 180 K, an anomalous mobility of specific Na+ sites is found to coexist with this electronic texture, suggesting that the formation of the latter may contribute to stabilizing the Na+ ordering. Control of the ion doping in these materials thus appears to be crucial for fine-tuning of their thermoelectric properties.

Electronic Correlations in CoO2, the Parent Compound of Triangular Cobaltates

A 59Co NMR study of CoO2, the x=0 end member of AxCoO2 (A = Na, Li...) cobaltates, reveals a metallic ground state, though with clear signs of strong electron correlations: low-energy spin fluctuations develop at wave vectors q different from 0 and a crossover to a Fermi-liquid regime occurs below a characteristic temperature T*~7 K. Despite some uncertainty over the exact cobalt oxidation state n this material, the results show that electronic correlations are revealed as x is reduced below 0.3. The data are consistent with NaxCoO2 being close to the Mott transition in the x -> 0 limit.

Non-magnetic insulator state in Na1CoO2 and phase separation of Na vacancies

Crystallographic, magnetic and NMR properties of a NaxCoO2 single crystal with x~1 are presented. We identify the stoichiometric Na1CoO2 phase, which is shown to be a non-magnetic insulator, as expected for homogeneous planes of Co3+ ions with S=0. In addition, we present evidence that, because of slight average Na deficiency, chemical and electronic phase separation leads to a segregation of Na vacancies into the well-defined, magnetic, Na0.8CoO2 phase. The importance of phase separation is discussed in the context of magnetic order for x~0.8 and the occurrence of a metal-insulator transition for x->1.

Comment on "Localized behavior near the Zn impurity in YBa2Cu4O8 as measured by nuclear quadrupole resonance"

Williams and Kramer [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 64}, 104506 (2001)] have recently argued against the existence of staggered magnetic moments residing on several lattice sites around Zn impurities in YBCO superconductors. This claim, which is in line with an earlier publication by Williams, Tallon and Dupree [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 61}, 4319 (2000)], is however in contradiction with a large body of experimental data from different NMR groups. On the contrary, the authors argue in favor of a very localized spin and charge density on Cu sites first neighbors to Zn. We show that the conclusions of Williams and Kramer arise from erroneous interpretations of NMR and NQR data.

Magnetic order and superconductivity in LSCO: a review

High-Tc copper oxides of the LSCO family show a very clear case of competition between antiferromagnetic (AF) order and superconductivity. Magnetic order can, however, coexist with superconductivity, and the experimental evidence for frozen magnetic moments in superconducting samples is reviewed here. The primary characteristics of the magnetic order are summarized and some open questions are outlined, particularly concerning the intrinsic or extrinsic nature of this order around x=0.12.

Glassy Spin Freezing and NMR Wipeout Effect in the High-T_c Superconductor La1.90Sr0.10CuO4: What is the Relationship With Stripes ?

We report on 139La and 63Ccu NMR/NQR measurements in the high-Tc superconductor La1.90Sr0.10CuO4 with Tc=26.5 K. Spin fluctuations probed by 139La spin-lattice relaxation (T1), continuously slow down on cooling through Tc. We argue that spin-freezing and superconductivity are bulk effects in this sample. Thus, both phenomena have to coexist microscopically. The distribution of 139La T1 values at low temperature reveals a wide spread of spin fluctuation frequencies in CuO2 planes. A simple estimate shows that Cu nuclei at sites where electronic fluctuations are the slowest are not observable because of too short relaxation times (wipeout effect). This means that the Cu NQR wipeout, observed in this sample, can be explained primarily by slow magnetic, rather than charge, fluctuations. This result does not rule out the connection between wipeout effect and charge stripe order [Hunt et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 82, 4300 (1999)], but it indicates that the relationship between both phenomena is not straightforward. We argue that the wipeout fraction cannot define a proper order parameter for a stripe phase, and cannot be used alone as a criterion for its existence.

NMR evidence for a "generalized spin-Peierls transition" in the high magnetic field phase of the spin-ladder Cu2(C5N2H12)2Cl4

The magnetic field-induced 3D ordered phase of the two-leg spin-ladder Cu2(C5N2H12)2Cl4 has been probed through measurements of 1H NMR spectra and 1/T1 in the temperature range 70~mK - 1.2 K. The second order transition line Tc(H) has been determined between Hc1 = 7.52 T and Hc2 = 13 T and varies as (H-Hc1)^(2/3) close to Hc1. From the observation of anomalous shifts and a crossover in 1/T1 above Tc, the mechanism of the 3D transition is argued to be magnetoelastic, involving a displacement of the protons along the longitudinal exchange (J//) path.

Cu NMR evidence for enhanced antiferromagnetic correlations around Zn impurities in YBa2Cu3O6.7

Doping the high-Tc superconductor YBa2Cu3O6.7 with 1.5 % of non-magnetic Zn impurities in CuO2 planes is shown to produce a considerable broadening of 63Cu NMR spectra, as well as an increase of low-energy magnetic fluctuations detected in 63Cu spin-lattice relaxation measurements. A model-independent analysis demonstrates that these effects are due to the development of staggered magnetic moments on many Cu sites around each Zn and that the Zn-induced moment in the bulk susceptibility might be explained by this staggered magnetization. Several implications of these enhanced antiferromagnetic correlations are discussed.

NQR Study of Spin-Freezing in Superconducting La2-xSrxCuO4: The Example of x=0.06

NQR 139La and 63Cu spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/T_1) measurements in a La1.94Sr0.06CuO4 single crystal are described. Slowing-down of Cu2+ spin fluctuations is evidenced through a dramatic increase of 139La 1/T_1 on cooling. While the onset of diamagnetism occurs at Tc=8 K, 1/^{139}T_1 has a peak at Tg~5 K, when the characteristic frequency of magnetic fluctuations reaches the NQR frequency nu_Q~19 MHz. In agreement with a number of previous studies, these results show that the so-called "cluster spin-glass" phase persists in the superconducting regime. Issues concerning the coexistence of the two phases are discussed.

Proton NMR for Measuring Quantum-Level Crossing in the Magnetic Molecular Ring Fe10

The proton nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 has been measured as a function of temperature and magnetic field (up to 15 T) in the molecular magnetic ring Fe10. Striking enhancement of 1/T1 is observed around magnetic field values corresponding to a crossing between the ground state and the excited states of the molecule. We propose that this is due to a cross-relaxation effect between the nuclear Zeeman reservoir and the reservoir of the Zeeman levels of the molecule. This effect provides a powerful tool to investigate quantum dynamical phenomena at level crossing.

Charge Segregation, Cluster Spin-Glass and Superconductivity in La1.94Sr0.06CuO4

A 63Cu and 139La NMR/NQR study of superconducting (Tc=7 K) La1.94Sr0.06CuO4 single crystal is reported. Coexistence of spin-glass and superconducting phases is found below ~5 K from 139La NMR relaxation. 63Cu and 139La NMR spectra show that, upon cooling, CuO2 planes progressively separate into two magnetic phases, one of them having enhanced antiferromagnetic correlations. These results establish the AF-cluster nature of the spin-glass. We discuss how this phase can be related to the microsegregation of mobile holes and to the possible pinning of charge-stripes.
