Quantifying Mental States in Work Environment: Mathematical Perspectives

We introduce a novel framework for quantifying mental and emotional states over time by combining virtual reality (VR) exposure with EEG recordings. Participants experienced a stress-inducing work scenario in VR, originally designed as a training tool for bank employees, providing a controlled proxy for high-stakes situations. This setup enables integration of subjective emotional self-assessments with objective neural data, from which an algorithm was efficiently used to infer emotional states. Building on these measurements, we propose possible mathematical models to capture the temporal dynamics of mental states, offering a quantitative approach to studying emotional processing and informing adaptive training in complex environments.

Characterisation of the neutron beam in the n_TOF-EAR2 experimental area at CERN following the spallation target upgrade

The n_TOF facility at CERN has undergone a major upgrade after the installation of a new spallation target, designed to improve the features of both neutron beamlines at the experimental areas 1 and 2 (EAR1 and EAR2) and the commissioning of a new experimental area (NEAR). Due to improved coupling of the spallation target with the EAR2 beamline, the upgrade resulted in a significantly increased neutron flux and improved neutron energy resolution. This paper presents the results of the commissioning phase that followed to characterise the EAR2 neutron beamline and validate the FLUKA Monte Carlo simulations of the facility. The main features of the neutron beam, namely the neutron flux, spatial profile and energy resolution, are evaluated and compared to the previous target. The neutron flux presents a general increase of 20% below 1 eV, 40% between 1 eV and 100 keV and 50% between 100 keV and 10 MeV. The measured width of the beam profile was 3 cm (FWHM) at the reference position for neutron capture measurements. The energy resolution with the new spallation target shows a significant improvement compared to the previous one. Moreover, FLUKA Monte Carlo simulations present a good agreement with the measured neutron flux and profile within uncertainties, and a remarkable reproduction of the energy resolution.

Human-vehicle interaction for autonomous vehicles in crosswalk scenarios: Field experiments with pedestrians and passengers

This paper presents the results of real-world testing of human-vehicle interactions with an autonomous vehicle equipped with internal and external Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs) in a crosswalk scenario. The internal and external HMIs were combined with implicit communication techniques using gentle and aggressive braking maneuvers in the crosswalk. Results have been collected in the form of questionnaires and measurable variables such as distance or speed when the pedestrian decides to cross. The questionnaires show that pedestrians feel safer when the external HMI or the gentle braking maneuver is used interchangeably, while the measured variables show that external HMI only helps in combination with the gentle braking maneuver. The questionnaires also show that internal HMI only improves passenger confidence in combination with the aggressive braking maneuver.

Verifying timestamps of occultation observation systems

We describe an image timestamp verification system to determine the exposure timing characteristics and continuity of images made by an imaging camera and recorder, with reference to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). The original use was to verify the timestamps of stellar occultation recording systems, but the system is applicable to lunar flashes, planetary transits, sprite recording, or any area where reliable timestamps are required. The system offers good temporal resolution (down to 2 msec, referred to UTC) and provides exposure duration and interframe dead time information. The system uses inexpensive, off-the- shelf components, requires minimal assembly and requires no high-voltage components or connections. We also describe an application to load FITS (and other format) image files, which can decode the verification image timestamp. Source code, wiring diagrams and built applications are provided to aid the construction and use of the device.
