Structural, elastic, and electronic properties of newly discovered Li2PtSi3 superconductor: Effect of transition metals

First-principles calculations within the density functional theory (DFT) with GGA-PBE exchange-correlation scheme have been employed to predict the structural, the elastic and the electronic properties of newly discovered lithium silicide superconductor, Li2PtSi3, for the first time. All the theoretical results are compared with those calculated recently for isostructural Li2IrSi3. The present study sheds light on the effect of replacement of transition metal element Ir with Pt on different mechanical, electronic, and superconducting properties. The effect of spin-orbit coupling on electronic band structure was found to be insignificant for Li2PtSi3. The difference in superconducting transition temperatures of Li2PtSi3 and Li2IrSi3 arises primarily due to the difference in electronic energy density of states at the Fermi level. Somewhat reduced Debye temperature in Li2PtSi3 plays a minor role. We have discussed the implications of the theoretical results in details in this study.

Structural, Elastic, and Electronic Properties of Recently Discovered Ternary Silicide Superconductor Li2IrSi3: An ab-initio Study

The structural, elastic, and electronic properties of the very recently discovered ternary silicide superconductor, Li2IrSi3, have been calculated using ab-initio technique. We have carried out the plane-wave pseudopotential approach within the framework of the first-principles density functional theory (DFT) implemented within the CASTEP code. The calculated structural parameters show a reasonable agreement with the experimental results. Elastic moduli of this interesting material have been calculated for the first time. The electronic band structure and electronic energy density of states indicate the strong covalent Ir-Si and Si-Si bonding which lead to the formation of the rigid structure of Li2IrSi3. Strong covalency give rise to a high Debye temperature in this system. We have discussed the theoretical results in detail in this paper.

Experimental determination of the state-dependent enhancement of the electron-positron momentum density in solids

The state-dependence of the enhancement of the electron-positron momentum density is investigated for some transition and simple metals (Cr, V, Ag and Al). Quantitative comparison with linearized muffin-tin orbital calculations of the corresponding quantity in the first Brillouin zone is shown to yield a measurement of the enhancement of the s, p and d states, independent of any parameterizations in terms of the electron density local to the positron. An empirical correction that can be applied to a first-principles state-dependent model is proposed that reproduces the measured state-dependence very well, yielding a general, predictive model for the enhancement of the momentum distribution of positron annihilation measurements, including those of angular correlation and coincidence Doppler broadening techniques.

Fermi surface of an important nano-sized metastable phase: Al$_3$Li

Nanoscale particles embedded in a metallic matrix are of considerable interest as a route towards identifying and tailoring material properties. We present a detailed investigation of the electronic structure, and in particular the Fermi surface, of a nanoscale phase ($L1_2$ Al$_3$Li) that has so far been inaccessible with conventional techniques, despite playing a key role in determining the favorable material properties of the alloy (Al\nobreakdash-9 at. %\nobreakdash-Li). The ordered precipitates only form within the stabilizing Al matrix and do not exist in the bulk; here, we take advantage of the strong positron affinity of Li to directly probe the Fermi surface of Al$_3$Li. Through comparison with band structure calculations, we demonstrate that the positron uniquely probes these precipitates, and present a 'tuned' Fermi surface for this elusive phase.

Expected Performance of the ATLAS Experiment - Detector, Trigger and Physics

A detailed study is presented of the expected performance of the ATLAS detector. The reconstruction of tracks, leptons, photons, missing energy and jets is investigated, together with the performance of b-tagging and the trigger. The physics potential for a variety of interesting physics processes, within the Standard Model and beyond, is examined. The study comprises a series of notes based on simulations of the detector and physics processes, with particular emphasis given to the data expected from the first years of operation of the LHC at CERN.

Performance Assessment of Sub-Percolating Nanobundle Network Transistors by an Analytical Model

Nanobundle network transistors (NBTs) have emerged as a viable, higher performance alternative to poly-silicon and organic transistors with possible applications in macroelectronic displays, chemical/biological sensors, and photovoltaics. A simple analytical model for I-V characteristics of NBTs (below the percolation limit) is proposed and validated by numerical simulation and experimental data. The physics-based predictive model provides a simple relation between transistor characteristics and design parameters which can be used for optimization of NBTs. The model provides important insights into the recent experiments on NBT characteristics and electrical purification of nanobundle networks.

Current-Voltage Characteristics of Long-Channel Nanobundle Thin-Film Transistors: A Bottom-up Perspective

By generalizing the classical linear response theory of stick percolation to nonlinear regime, we find that the drain current of a Nanobundle Thin Film Transistor (NB-TFT) is described under a rather general set of conditions by a universal scaling formula ID = A/LS g(LS/LC, rho_S * LS * LS) f(VG, VD), where A is a technology-specific constant, g is function of geometrical factors like stick length (LS), channel length (LC), and stick density (rho_S) and f is a function of drain (VD) and gate (VG) biasing conditions. This scaling formula implies that the measurement of full I-V characteristics of a single NB-TFT is sufficient to predict the performance characteristics of any other transistor with arbitrary geometrical parameters and biasing conditions.

Observation of a strongly nested Fermi surface in the shape-memory alloy Ni[0.62]Al[0.38]

The Fermi surface topology of the shape-memory alloy Ni[0.62]Al[0.38] has been determined using Compton scattering. A large area of this Fermi surface can be made to nest with other areas by translation through a vector of ~ 0.18 [1,1,0] (2pi/a), which correponds to the wavevector associated with martensitic precursor phenomena such as phonon softening and diffuse streaking in electron diffraction patterns. This observation is compelling evidence that these phenomena are driven by the enhanced electron-lattice coupling due to the Fermi surface nesting.

Fermi surface nesting and charge-density wave formation in rare-earth tritellurides

The Fermi surface of rare-earth tri-tellurides ({\it R}Te$_{3}$) is investigated in terms of the nesting driven charge-density wave formation using positron annihilation and first-principles LMTO calculations. Fermi surface nesting is revealed as a strong candidate for driving charge-density wave formation in these compounds. The nesting vector obtained from positron annihilation experiments on GdTe$_{3}$ is determined to be ${\mathbf q} = (0.28\pm0.02,0,0) {\mathbf a}^{*}$, (${\mathbf a}^{*}=2π/{\mathbf a}$), in excellent agreement with previous experimental and theoretical studies.

Nesting properties and anisotropy of the Fermi surface of LuNi$_{2}$B$_{2}$C

The rare earth nickel borocarbides, with the generic formula $R$Ni$_{2}$B$_{2}$C, have recently been shown to display a rich variety of phenomena. Most striking has been the competition between, and even coexistence of, antiferromagnetism and superconductivity. We have measured the Fermi surface (FS) of LuNi$_{2}$B$_{2}$C, and shown that it possesses nesting features capable of explaining some of the phenomena experimentally observed. In particular, it had previously been conjectured that a particular sheet of FS is responsible for the modulated magnetic structures manifest in some of the series. We report the first direct experimental observation of this sheet.

Induced spin polarisation in a ferromagnetic gadolinium-yttrium alloy

The first direct evidence of an induced spin moment in Gd(62.4)Y(37.6) is presented. This additional moment, of 0.16 +/- 0.03 Bohr magnetons, arises from polarisation of Y electrons in the alloy. The moment was detected in a Compton scattering experiment via the measurement of the one dimensional projection of the momentum space electron spin density in Gd and in the alloy. The result is consistent with theoretical predictions calculated using the LMTO method within the local spin density approximation.
