Magnetic properties of Sn-substituted Ni-Zn ferrite:synthesized from nano-sized powders of NiO, ZnO, Fe2O3 and SnO2

A series of Ni0.6-x/2Zn0.4-x/2SnxFe2O4 (x = 0.0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2 and 0.3) (NZSFO) ferrite composites have been synthesized from nano powders using standard solid state reaction technique. The spinel cubic structure of the investigated samples has been observed by the X-ray diffraction (XRD). The magnetic properties such as saturation magnetization (Ms), remanent magnetization (Mr), coercive field (Hc) and Bohr magneton (B) are calculated from the hysteresis loops. The value of Ms is found to decrease with increasing Sn content in the samples. This change has been successfully explained by the variation of A-B interaction strength due to Sn substitution in different sites. The compositional stability and quality of the prepared ferrite composites have also been endorsed by the fairly constant initial permeability (/) over a wide range of frequency region. The decreasing trend of / with increasing Sn content has been observed. Curie temperature (TC) has found to increase with the increase in Sn content. Wide spread frequency utility zone indicates that the NZSFO can be considered as a good candidate for use in broadband pulse transformer and wide band read-write heads for video recording. The abnormal behavior for x = 0.05 has been explained with existing theory.

Ab-initio study of mechanical and electronic properties of MoAlB

Using first-principles calculations, the structural, elastic and electronic properties of MoAlB have been investigated for the first time. The optimized lattice constants exhibit fair agreement with the experimental values. The computed elastic constants satisfy the mechanical stability conditions for the MoAlB. The Mo-based boride MoAlB is elastically anisotropic and can be classified as brittle material. This boride is expected to show reasonable thermal conductivity due to its high Debye temperature of 693 K. The metallic electrical conductivity of this compound is predicted from the electronic band structure calculations. The chemical bonding in MoAlB is basically covalent in nature which is supported by the calculated electronic density of states (DOS), Mulliken population, and charge density distribution. The estimated hardness value of 11.6 GPa for MoAlB suggests that it is softer compared to many other borides. The Fermi surface is formed due to low dispersive Mo 4d-like bands, which makes the compound a conductive one.

Comparative study of Mo2Ga2C with superconducting MAX phase Mo2GaC: a first-principles calculations

The structural, electronic, optical and thermodynamic properties of Mo2Ga2C are investigated using density functional theory (DFT) within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). The optimized crystal structure is obtained and the lattice parameters are compared with available experimental data. The electronic density of states (DOS) is calculated and analyzed. The metallic behavior for the compound is confirmed and the value of DOS at Fermi level is 4.2 states per unit cell per eV. Technologically important optical parameters (e.g., dielectric function, refractive index, absorption coefficient, photo conductivity, reflectivity, and loss function) have been calculated for the first time. The study of dielectric constant (e1) indicates the Drude-like behavior. The absorption and conductivity spectra suggest that the compound is metallic. The reflectance spectrum shows that this compound has the potential to be used as a solar reflector. The thermodynamic properties such as the temperature and pressure dependent bulk modulus, Debye temperature, specific heats, and thermal expansion coefficient of Mo2Ga2C MAX phase are derived from the quasi-harmonic Debye model with phononic effect also for the first time. Analysis of Tc expression using available parameter values (DOS, Debye temperature, atomic mass etc.) suggests that the compound is less likely to be superconductor.

Newly synthesized Zr2(Al0.58Bi0.42)C, Zr2(Al0.2Sn0.8)C, and Zr2(Al0.3Sb0.7)C MAX phases: A first-principles study

The structural, elastic, and electronic properties of newly synthesized Zr2(Al0.58Bi0.42)C, Zr2(Al0.2Sn0.8)C, and Zr2(Al0.3Sb0.7)C MAX nanolaminates have been studied using first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations for the first time. Theoretical Vickers hardness has also been estimated for these compounds. All the calculated results are compared with experimental data and also with that of recently discovered Zr2AlC phase, where available. Zr2(Al0.58Bi0.42)C and Zr2(Al0.2Sn0.8)C are the two first Bi and Sn containing MAX compounds. The calculated structural parameters are found to be in good agreement with the experimental data. The single crystal elastic constants Cij and other polycrystalline elastic coefficients have been calculated and the mechanical stabilities of these compounds have been theoretically confirmed. The bulk modulus increases and the shear modulus decreases due to partial Bi/Sn/Sb substitution for Al in Zr2AlC. The calculated elastic moduli show that these Bi/Sn/Sb containing MAX phases are more anisotropic than Zr2AlC, and have a tendency towards ductility. The Vickers hardness decreases in the Bi/Sn/Sb containing compounds. Further, the electronic band structures and electronic density of states (EDOS) are calculated and the effects of different elemental substitution on these properties are investigated. The electronic band structures show metallic characteristics with contribution predominantly coming from the Zr 4d orbitals. Partial presence of Bi/Sn/Sb atoms increases the EDOS at the Fermi level to some extent. Possible implications of the theoretical results for these recently discovered MAX nanolaminates have been discussed in detail in this paper.

Structural and electrical properties of Sn substituted double sintering derived Ni-Zn ferrite

The Sn substituted Ni-Zn ferrites were synthesized by the standard double sintering technique using nano powders of nickel oxide (NiO), zinc oxide (ZnO), iron oxide (Fe2O3) and tin oxide (SnO2). The structural and electrical properties have been investigated by the X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, DC resistivity and dielectric measurements. Extra intermediate phase has been detected along with the inverse cubic spinel phase of Ni-Zn ferrite. Enhancement of grain size is observed in Sn substituted Ni-Zn ferrites. DC resistivity as a function of temperature has been investigated by two probe method. The DC resistivity was found to decrease whereas the dielectric constants increase with increasing Sn content in Ni-Zn ferrites. The dielectric constant of the as prepared samples is high enough to use these materials in miniaturized memory devices based capacitive components or energy storage principles.

Effect of Sintering Temperature on Structural and Magnetic Properties of Ni0.6Zn0.4Fe2O4 Ferrite: Synthesized from Nanocrystalline Powders

The effect of sintering temperatures (Ts) on the structural and magnetic properties of Ni0.6Zn0.4Fe2O4 (NZFO) ferrites synthesized by conventional double sintering method has been reported. The samples are sintered at 1200, 1250 and 1300 °C. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis reveals the formation of a single phase cubic spinel structure of the sample. The magnetic parameters such as saturation magnetization, Ms; coercive field, Hc; remanent magnetization, Mr and Bohr magneton, μB are determined and well compared with reported values. The obtained values are found to be 71.94 emu/gm and 1.2 Oe for Ms and Hc, respectively at Ts=1300 oC. Curie temperature (Tc) at various Ts has also been calculated. It is noteworthy to note that the sample with a very low Hc could be used in transformer core and inductor applications.

New MAX Phase Compound Mo2TiAlC2: First-principles Study

A theoretical study of Mo2TiAlC2 compound belonging to the MAX phases has been performed by using the firstprinciples pseudopotential plane-wave method within the generalized gradient approximation. We have calculated the structural, elastic, electronic and optical properties of Mo2TiAlC2. To confirm mechanical stability, the elastic constants Cij are calculated. Other elastic parameters such as bulk modulus, shear modulus, compressibility, Young modulus, anisotropic factor, Pugh ratio, Poisson ratio are also calculated. The energy band structure and density of states are calculated and analyzed. The results show that the electrical conductivity is metallic with a high density of states at the Fermi level in which Mo 4d states dominate. Furthermore, the optical properties such as dielectric function, refractive index, photoconductivity, absorption coefficients, loss function and reflectivity are also calculated. Its reflectance spectrum shows that it has the potential to be used as a promising shielding material to avoid solar heating.

Sulvanite Compounds Cu3TMS4 (TM= V, Nb and Ta): Elastic, Electronic, Optical and Thermal Properties using First-principles Method

We present a systematic first-principles study of the structural, elastic, electronic, optical and thermodynamics properties of the sulvanite compounds Cu3TMS4 (TM = V, Nb and Ta). The structural, elastic and electronic properties are in fact revisited using a different calculation code than that used by other workers and the results are compared. The band gaps are found to be 1.041, 1.667 and 1.815 eV for Cu3VS4, Cu3NbS4 and Cu3TaS4, respectively which are comparable to other available calculated results. The optical properties such as dielectric function, refractive index, photoconductivity, absorption coefficients, reflectivity and loss function have been calculated for the first time. The calculated results are compared with the limited measured data on energy dependent refractive index and reflectivity coefficient available only for Cu3TaS4. All the materials are dielectric, transparent in the visible range. The values of plasma frequencies are found to be 15.36, 15.58 and 15.64 eV for Cu3VS4, Cu3NbS4 and Cu3TaS4, respectively. Furthermore, following the quasi-harmonic Debye model, the temperature effect on the bulk modulus, heat capacity, and Debye temperature is calculated reflecting the anharmonic phonon effects and these are compared with both experimental and other theoretical data where available.

Structural Properties, Impedance Spectroscopy and Dielectric Spin Relaxation of Ni-Zn Ferrite Synthesized by Double Sintering Technique

Structural properties, impedance, dielectric and electric modulus spectra have been used to investigate the sintering temperature (Ts) effect on the single phase cubic spinel Ni0.6Zn0.4Fe2O4 (NZFO) ceramics synthesized by standard ceramic technique. Enhancement of dielectric constants is observed with increasing Ts. The collective contribution of n-type and p-type carriers yields a clear peak in notable unusual dielectric behavior is successfully explained by the Rezlescu model. The non-Debye type long range dielectric relaxation phenomena is explained by electric modulus formalism. Fast response of the grain boundaries of the sample sintered at lower Ts sample leading to small dielectric spin relaxation time, t (several nanoseconds) have been determined using electric modulus spectra for the samples sintered at different Ts. Two clear semicircles in impedance Cole-Cole plot have also been successfully explained by employing two parallel RC equivalent circuits in series configuration taking into account no electrode contribution. Such a long relaxation time in NZFO ceramics could suitably be used in nanoscale spintronic devices.

First-principles study of Vickers hardness and thermodynamic properties of Ti3SnC2 polymorphs

We have investigated Vickers hardness and the thermodynamic properties of the recently discovered nanolaminate carbide Ti3SnC2 polymorphs using the first-principles calculations. The chemical bonding shows a combination of covalent, ionic and metallic types. The strong covalent bonding is mainly responsible for high Vickers hardness of Ti3SnC2 polymorphs. Thermodynamic properties are studied using the quasi-harmonic Debye model. The variation of bulk modulus, thermal expansion co-efficient, specific heats, and Debye temperature with applied pressure (P) and temperature (T) are investigated systematically within the ranges of 0 - 50 GPa and 0 - 1000 K. The calculated results have been compared with available experimental and theoretical data.

A Theoretical Study Of Elastic, Electronic, Optical and Thermodynamic Properties Of AlB2 AND TaB2

Using ab initio method we have studied the structural, elastic, electronic, optical and thermodynamic properties of AlB2 and TaB2. We have used plane wave pseudopotential with generalised gradient approximation as implemented in CASTEP program. The independent elastic constants, bulk modulus, Young's modulus, shear modulus, anisotropic factor, Pugh ratio, etc are calculated. This results show that AlB2 and TaB2 are mechanically stable. We have also calculated the band structure and density of states. Band structure results show that AlB2 and TaB2 show metallic behaviour. In order to understand the electronic properties in a better way we have also calculated dielectric function, refractive index, absorption coefficient, conductivity, loss function and reflectivity. Results of absorption coefficient and conductivity are in good agreement with the band structure results. The effect of temperature and pressure on the bulk modulus, Debye temperature, specific heat and also on the thermal expansion coefficient are derived from the quasi-harmonic Debye model with phononic effect in both cases. The results for the elastic and electronic properties are compared to experimental measurements and with the results obtained in different band-structure calculations, however, no optical data are available for comparison.

Sn1-xBixO2 and Sn1-xTaxO2 (0 \leq x \leq 0.75): A first-principles study

The structural, elastic, electronic and optical (x = 0) properties of doped Sn1-xBixO2 and Sn1-xTaxO2 (0 \leq x \leq 0.75) are studied by using the first-principles pseudopotential plane-wave method within the local density approximation. The independent elastic constants Cij and other elastic parameters of these compounds have been calculated for the first time. The mechanical stability of the compounds with different doping concentrations has also been studied. The electronic band structure and density of states are calculated and the effect of doping on these properties is also analyzed. It is seen that the band gap of the undoped compound narrowed with dopant concentration which disappeared for x = 0.26 for Bi doping and 0.36 for Ta doping. The materials thus become conductive oxides through the change in the electronic properties of the compound for x \leq 0.75 which may be useful for potential application. The calculated optical properties, e.g. dielectric function, refractive index, absorption spectrum, loss-function, reflectivity and conductivity of the undoped SnO2 in two polarization directions are compared with both previous calculations and measurements.
