Exceptional points in dissipative coupling polaron-polaritons

Understanding how strong correlations and dissipation combine to shape collective quantum excitations is a central challenge in many-body physics. We investigate the effect of dissipative light-matter coupling on strongly interacting exciton-polaritons in the presence of a biexciton resonance, which gives rise to polaron-polariton quasiparticles. We show that the interplay between many-body correlations and non-Hermitian coupling generates anomalous dispersion relations and exceptional points in the polaron-polariton spectrum. The location and coexistence of exceptional points are controlled by the dissipative coupling and the relative decay rates of the excitonic and photonic constituents, allowing them to emerge across different polaron-polariton branches. These results identify dissipative polaron-polaritons as a versatile platform for exploring non-Hermitian many-body physics with tunable light-matter quasiparticles.

Non-Markovian entropy production fluctuation theorem driven by a time-dependent electric field

Fluctuation theorems are key to understanding both fundamental and applied aspects of non-equilibrium thermodynamics of small systems. We study the non-Markovian entropy production fluctuation theorem for the diffusion process of charged particles in a gas inside a harmonic potential and under the action of a time-dependent electric field, using a generalized Langevin equation. By considering the influence of the electric field on both the tagged Brownian particle and the bath particles, an "induced" electric force arises. Despite the additional force, we demonstrate that Kubo's second fluctuation-dissipation theorem (FDT) remains unchanged. The FDT allows us to obtain the Gaussian probability density for the position along a single stochastic trajectory, which is the key to demonstrating the validity of the detailed fluctuation theorem (DFT) for the total entropy production. We study the specific result of an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck-type friction memory kernel and an oscillating electric field, and analyze the average work and entropy production in different parameter regimes.

Chaos and Regularity in an Anisotropic Soft Squircle Billiard

A hard-wall billiard is a mathematical model describing the confinement of a free particle that collides specularly and instantaneously with boundaries and discontinuities. Soft billiards are a generalization that includes a smooth boundary whose dynamics are governed by Hamiltonian equations and overcome overly simplistic representations. We study the dynamical features of an anisotropic soft-wall squircle billiard. This curve is a geometric figure that seamlessly blends the angularity of a square with the smooth curves of a circle. We characterize the billiard's emerging trajectories, exhibiting the onset of chaos and its alternation with regularity in the parameter space. We characterize the transition to chaos and the stabilization of the dynamics by revealing the nonlinearity of the parameters (squarness, ellipticity, and hardness) via the computation of Poincaré surfaces of section and the Lyapunov exponent across the parameter space. We expect our work to introduce a valuable tool to increase understanding of the onset of chaos in soft billiards.

Magic States in the Asymmetric Quantum Rabi Model

Magic or non-stabilizerness is a resource for quantum computing that has been extensively studied in qudit networks. It describes the degree to which Clifford gates cannot generate a given state, capturing the advantage of quantum over classical computing. However, its definition in continuous variables and general composite systems remains an open issue. We study magic in a bipartite system, the Asymmetric Quantum Rabi model, a paradigmatic model from quantum optics. We explore the presence of magic in the qubit-reduced system throughout the Hamiltonian parameter space, the role of light-matter interactions in its generation, and the manifestation of Wigner function negativity in the corresponding bosonic degree of freedom. Finally, we discuss our results for magic state preparation in the strong and ultra-strong coupling regimes within the context of quantum informational systems.

Quantum sensing in Kerr parametric oscillators

Quantum metrology and quantum sensing aim to use quantum properties to enhance measurement precision beyond what could be classically achieved. Here, we demonstrate how the analysis of the phase space structure of the classical limit of Kerr parametric oscillators can be used for determining control parameters values that lead to the squeezing of the uncertainty in position and the amplification of the quantum Fisher information. We also explore how quantum sensing can benefit from excited-state quantum phase transitions, even in the absence of a conventional quantum phase transition. The system that we consider models exciton-polariton condensates and superconducting circuits, making our study relevant for potential experimental applications.

Thermal transport of flexural phonons in a rectangular wire

We study the quantum thermal transport of elastic excitations through a two-dimensional elastic waveguide between two thermal reservoirs. We solve the classical Kirchhoff-Love equation for rectangular wires and explore the dispersion relation for both the symmetric and antisymmetric solutions. Then, we study the phonon transport of these modes within the second quantization framework by analyzing the mean quadratic displacement, from which the energy density current, the temperature field, and conductance are determined. We identify the relevant modes contributing to thermal transport and explore the average temperature difference to reach the high-temperature limit. We expect our results to pave the way for understanding phonon-mediated thermal transport in two-dimensional mesoscopic quantum devices.

Ultra-strong trion-polaritons

Due to the hybridization of charged excitons with cavity photons, trion-polaritons (TP) in microcavity semiconductors are a promising avenue for realizing strong polariton interactions and many-body polariton phases. We develop a quantum field theoretical formalism to study the formation of trion-polaritons in a microcavity semiconductor doped with itinerant electrons within the ultra-strong light-matter coupling regime. We predict a new class of many-body states resulting from the intriguing interplay of polarons and virtual photons in an uncharted territory of light-matter interactions and Feshbach physics.

Spatial structure of magnetic polarons in strongly interacting antiferromagnets

The properties of mobile impurities in quantum magnets are fundamental for our understanding of strongly correlated materials and may play a key role in the physics of high-temperature superconductivity. Hereby, the motion of hole-like defects through an antiferromagnet has been of particular importance. It creates magnetic frustrations that lead to the formation of a quasiparticle, whose complex structure continues to pose substantial challenges to theory and numerical simulations. In this article, we develop a non-perturbative theoretical approach to describe the microscopic properties of such magnetic polarons. Based on the self-consistent Born approximation, which is provenly accurate in the strong-coupling regime, we obtain a complete description of the polaron wave function by solving a set of Dyson-like equations that permit to compute relevant spin-hole correlation functions. We apply this new method to analyze the spatial structure of magnetic polarons in the strongly interacting regime and find qualitative differences from predictions of previously applied truncation schemes. Our calculations reveal a remarkably high spatial symmetry of the polaronic magnetization cloud and a surprising misalignment between its orientation and the polaron crystal momentum. The developed framework opens up an approach to the microscopic properties of doped quantum magnets and will enable detailed analyses of ongoing experiments based on cold-atom quantum simulations of the Fermi-Hubbard model.

Quantum localization measures in phase space

Measuring the degree of localization of quantum states in phase space is essential for the description of the dynamics and equilibration of quantum systems, but this topic is far from being understood. There is no unique way to measure localization, and individual measures can reflect different aspects of the same quantum state. Here, we present a general scheme to define localization in measure spaces, which is based on what we call Rényi occupations, from which any measure of localization can be derived. We apply this scheme to the four-dimensional unbounded phase space of the interacting spin-boson Dicke model. In particular, we make a detailed comparison of two localization measures based on the Husimi function in the regime where the model is chaotic, namely one that projects the Husimi function over the finite phase space of the spin and another that uses the Husimi function defined over classical energy shells. We elucidate the origin of their differences, showing that in unbounded spaces the definition of maximal delocalization requires a bounded reference subspace, with different selections leading to contextual answers.

Attractive and repulsive exciton-polariton interactions mediated by an electron gas

Realising strong photon-photon interactions in a solid-state setting is a major goal with far reaching potential for optoelectronic applications. Using Landau's quasiparticle framework combined with a microscopic many-body theory, we explore the interactions between exciton-polaritons and trions in a two-dimensional semiconductor injected with an electron gas inside a microcavity. We show that particle-hole excitations in the electron gas mediate an attractive interaction between the polaritons, whereas a trion-polariton interaction mediated by the exchange of an electron is either repulsive or attractive depending on the specific polariton branch. These mediated interactions are intrinsic to the quasiparticles and are also present in the absence of light. Importantly, they can be tuned to be more than an order of magnitude stronger than the direct polariton-polariton interaction in the absence of the electron gas, thereby providing a promising outlook for non-linear optical components. Finally, we compare our theoretical predictions with two recent experiments.

Strong interactions and bi-excitons in a polariton mixture

We develop a many-body theory for the properties of exciton-polaritons interacting strongly with a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of exciton-polaritons in another spin state. Interactions lead to the presence of a two-body bound state, the bi-exciton, giving rise to a Feshbach resonance in the polariton spectrum when its energy is equal to that of two free polaritons. Using the minimal set of terms to describe this resonance, our theory recovers the main findings of two experiments probing interaction effects for upper and lower polaritons in a BEC. This strongly supports that Feshbach physics has indeed been realized, and we furthermore extract the energy and decay of biexciton from the experimental data. The decay rate is predicted to be much larger than that coming from its dissociation into two free polaritons indicating that other decay channels are important.

Dynamical signatures of quantum chaos and relaxation timescales in a spin-boson system

Quantum systems whose classical counterparts are chaotic typically have highly correlated eigenvalues and level statistics that coincide with those from ensembles of full random matrices. A dynamical manifestation of these correlations comes in the form of the so-called correlation hole, which is a dip below the saturation point of the survival probability's time evolution. In this work, we study the correlation hole in the spin-boson (Dicke) model, which presents a chaotic regime and can be realized in experiments with ultracold atoms and ion traps. We derive an analytical expression that describes the entire evolution of the survival probability and allows us to determine the timescales of its relaxation to equilibrium. This expression shows remarkable agreement with our numerical results. While the initial decay and the time to reach the minimum of the correlation hole depend on the initial state, the dynamics beyond the hole up to equilibration is universal. We find that the relaxation time of the survival probability for the Dicke model increases linearly with system size.

Dynamics of Coherent States in Regular and Chaotic Regimes of the Non-integrable Dicke Model

The quantum dynamics of initial coherent states is studied in the Dicke model and correlated with the dynamics, regular or chaotic, of their classical limit. Analytical expressions for the survival probability, i.e. the probability of finding the system in its initial state at time $t$, are provided in the regular regions of the model. The results for regular regimes are compared with those of the chaotic ones. It is found that initial coherent states in regular regions have a much longer equilibration time than those located in chaotic regions. The properties of the distributions for the initial coherent states in the Hamiltonian eigenbasis are also studied. It is found that for regular states the components with no negligible contribution are organized in sequences of energy levels distributed according to Gaussian functions. In the case of chaotic coherent states, the energy components do not have a simple structure and the number of participating energy levels is larger than in the regular cases.

Regularity and chaos in cavity QED

The interaction of a quantized electromagnetic field in a cavity with a set of two-level atoms inside can be described with algebraic Hamiltonians of increasing complexity, from the Rabi to the Dicke models. Their algebraic character allows, through the use of coherente states, a semiclassical description in phase space, where the non-integrable Dicke model has regions associated with regular and chaotic motion. The appearance of classical chaos can be quantified calculating the largest Lyapunov exponent in the whole available phase space for a given energy. In the quantum regime, employing efficient diagonalization techniques, we are able to perform a detailed quantitative study of the regular and chaotic regions, where the quantum Participation Ratio (PR) of coherent states on the eigenenergy basis plays a role equivalent to the Lyapunov exponent. It is noted that, in the thermodynamic limit, dividing the Participation Ratio by the number of atoms leads to a positive value in chaotic regions, while it tends to zero in the regular ones.

Adiabatic invariants for the regular region of the Dicke model

Adiabatic invariants are introduced and shown to provide an approximate second integral of motion for the non-integrable Dicke model, in the energy region where the system exhibits a regular dynamics. This low-energy region is always present and has been described both in a semiclassical and a full quantum analysis. Its Peres lattices exhibit that many observables vary smoothly with energy, along lines which beg for a formal description. It is shown how the adiabatic invariants provide a rationale to their presence in many cases. They are built employing the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, valid when a fast system is coupled to a much slower one. As the Dicke model has a one bosonic and one fermionic degree of freedom, two versions of the approximation are used, depending on which one is the faster. In both cases a noticeably accord with exact numerical results is obtained. The employment of the adiabatic invariants provides a simple and clear theoretical framework to study the physical phenomenology associated to this energy regime, far beyond the energies where the quadratic approximation can be employed.

Approximated integrability of the Dicke model

A very approximate second integral of motion of the Dicke model is identified within a broad region above the ground state, and for a wide range of values of the external parameters. This second integral, obtained from a Born Oppenheimer approximation, classifies the whole regular part of the spectrum in bands labelled by its corresponding eigenvalues. Results obtained from this approximation are compared with exact numerical diagonalization for finite systems in the superradiant phase, obtaining a remarkable accord. The region of validity of our approach in the parameter space, which includes the resonant case, is unveiled. The energy range of validity goes from the ground state up to a certain upper energy where chaos sets in, and extends far beyond the range of applicability of a simple harmonic approximation around the minimal energy configuration. The upper energy validity limit increases for larger values of the coupling constant and the ratio between the level splitting and the frequency of the field. These results show that the Dicke model behaves like a two-degree of freedom integrable model for a wide range of energies and values of the external parameters.

Classical chaos in atom-field systems

The relation between the onset of chaos and critical phenomena, like Quantum Phase Transitions (QPT) and Excited-State Quantum Phase transitions (ESQPT), is analyzed for atom-field systems. While it has been speculated that the onset of hard chaos is associated with ESQPT based in the resonant case, the off-resonant cases show clearly that both phenomena, ESQPT and chaos, respond to different mechanisms. The results are supported in a detailed numerical study of the dynamics of the semiclassical Hamiltonian of the Dicke model. The appearance of chaos is quantified calculating the largest Lyapunov exponent for a wide sample of initial conditions in the whole available phase space for a given energy. The percentage of the available phase space with chaotic trajectories is evaluated as a function of energy and coupling between the qubit and bosonic part, allowing to obtain maps in the space of coupling and energy, where ergodic properties are observed in the model. Different sets of Hamiltonian parameters are considered, including resonant and off-resonant cases.

Delocalization and quantum chaos in atom-field systems

Employing efficient diagonalization techniques, we perform a detailed quantitative study of the regular and chaotic regions in phase space in the simplest non-integrable atom-field system, the Dicke model. A close correlation between the classical Lyapunov exponents and the quantum Participation Ratio of coherent states on the eigenenergy basis is exhibited for different points in the phase space. It is also shown that the Participation Ratio scales linearly with the number of atoms in chaotic regions, and with its square root in the regular ones.
