Photometric and spectral variability of the candidate post-AGB star IRAS 07506-0345

We report photometric and spectroscopic observations of the poorly studied post-AGB candidate IRAS 07506-0345, obtained with the telescopes of the Caucasian Mountain Observatory of SAI MSU in 2023-2026. The star exhibits Cepheid-like variability with a pulsation period of P = 33.68 days. Low-resolution spectra reveal a strong CN molecular band at $λ$ 3883, characteristic of carbon-rich post-AGB objects, while H$α$ shows phase-dependent emission and P~Cyg-type profiles, indicating shock waves and mass outflow. Radial velocities are measured from multiple spectral lines. Using period-luminosity-color relations for Type II Cepheids, we estimate a luminosity of $L = 1050\pm250\,L_\odot$. The combined properties - period, amplitude, light-curve morphology, infrared excess, low metallicity, and hydrogen line emissions - securely classify IRAS 07506-0345 as an RV Tau variable.

The curved jet in the young star FN Tau

In the vicinity of the young star FN Tau, we have detected a microjet and four Herbig-Haro objects, whose positions and kinematics indicate the presence of a bipolar collimated outflow from the star - HH 1267. The stellar jet does not propagate rectilinearly, and we discuss the possibility that the curved shape of the jet, whose axis is inclined to the line of sight at an angle $<20^\circ$, results from the precession of the inner regions of the FN Tau protoplanetary disk. Approximately 60 years ago, the star underwent outbursts with an amplitude of $Δm_{\rm pg} \sim 2^{\rm m}$ lasting several months, which we associate with the onset of the microjet.

Photometric and Spectral Evolution of the Symbiotic Nova HM Sagittae since 2003

We present photometric and spectral monitoring of the symbiotic system HM Sge, which consists of a Mira variable with a dust shell and a hot white dwarf ionizing the surrounding gaseous nebula. The system underwent a nova-like outburst in 1975 and experienced a high-activity episode during 2018-2021. UBV photometry from 2003 to 2025 shows monotonic fading at about 0.05 mag/yr until 2018, followed by a 0.3 mag brightening peaking in 2021 and a decline by 2025 to the faintest level in five decades of monitoring. Near-infrared observations (JHKLM, 2009-2025), combined with archival data, reveal Mira pulsations with a period of 532 d and long-term variability driven by changes in the optical depth of the dust shell. Spectral monitoring (2016-2025) reveals a substantial evolution in the emission spectrum of the gaseous envelope. The 2018-2021 high-activity episode was accompanied by enhanced fluxes in recombination lines (H I, He I, He II) and forbidden transitions ([O I], [Ar V], [Fe VI], [Ca VII]), together with a 17-fold brightening of the Raman-scattered O VI $λ$6725 line. We report the first detection of the [Fe X] $λ$6374 line in HM Sge. Monitoring this line from 2007 to 2025 shows its equivalent width growing through 2017 - indicating gradual coronal heating - then declining by 2021, likely reflecting altered accretion conditions and/or hot-component properties during the high-activity episode. We propose that both the 1975 outburst and the 2018-2021 high-activity episode may be linked to periastron passage of the binary components; if so, the about 46-year interval would constrain the system's orbital period.

The eruptive young star IRAS 21204+4913

The results of photometric, polarimetric, and spectroscopic observations are presented for the young star IRAS 21204+4913, whose visible brightness has increased by $\approx 5^{\rm m}$ since October 2025. The star's absorption spectrum in the $0.36 - 0.75 μ$m range resembles those of A - F giants and supergiants, but it also exhibits molecular TiO bands. The brightening was accompanied by a significant increase in the degree of polarization of the stellar radiation (to $\approx 16 \%$ in the I-band), likely due to scattering by dust in an expanding circumstellar shell. The P Cygni profile of the H$α$ line implies a dusty wind velocity of $\approx 300$ km/s. We believe that the outburst of IRAS 21204+4913 is caused by an increase in the accretion rate of protoplanetary disk's matter onto the young star with a mass of $\lesssim 0.5$ M$_\odot$ to $\gtrsim 3\times 10^{-5}$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$. Furthermore, IRAS 21204+4913 displays several unusual features: the dependence of the width and radial velocity of absorption lines on the excitation potential, emission in the TiO molecular bands, and a comparably bright outburst that occured in 1948. Several T Tauri stars and a group of Herbig-Haro objects are found in the vicinity of the star.

On the influence of component orbital motion on the photometric variability of DF Tau

Based on the analysis of the long-term light curve of the young binary DF Tau spanning approximately 125 years, we infer that its brightness variations are associated with changes in the accretion rate from the circumstellar protoplanetary disk onto the primary. We have also substantially improved the orbital parameters of DF Tau, which enables us to align its secular light curve with the evolution of the binary's component separation. The relationship between the long-term brightness variations and the orbital motion of DF Tau, if present, appears to be inconsistent with theoretical predictions. Notably, similar discrepancies between theory and observations are also seen in other young binary systems. Furthermore, the source of the polarized radiation in the optical range is found to be located at a distance of $\lesssim 0.5^{\prime\prime}$ from the star, with the polarization variability showing no dependence on the orbital phase.

IRAS 22272+5435 (V354 Lac): Multicolor Photometry of a Variable Carbon-rich post-AGB Star and a Dust Formation Episode

We present new UBV photometric observations (2009-2024) of the carbon-rich post-AGB star IRAS 22272+5435 (V354 Lac), combined with our data spanning over 30 years (1991-2024). The star shows pulsations with two closely spaced periods, 127 and 132 d, which cause brightness variations of variable amplitude. We also detect low-amplitude oscillations with a 661-day period, of uncertain origin. Color analysis reveals both temperature variations during pulsations and spectral anomalies. For the first time, we analyze long-term JHKLM photometry (1994-2024), showing increased KLM-band brightness from 1996 to 2004 - likely due to dust emission following a sudden mass ejection. The absence of strong optical variability suggests either a large angle between the ejection direction and the line of sight or a low optical depth of the ejected material. We discuss possible mechanisms and observational signatures of this dust-formation event.

The jet and circumstellar environment of the young binary DF Tau

Jets and disc winds play an important role in the evolution of protoplanetary discs and the formation of planetary systems. However, there is still a lack of observational data regarding the presence and parameters of outflows, especially for close young binaries. In this study, we aim to find the HH flow near the young sub-arcsecond binary DF Tau and explore its morphology. Narrow-band H$α$ and H$_2$ 2.12 $μ$m imaging and spectroscopic observations of DF Tau and its vicinity were performed. We have discovered several emission nebulae near the binary, which likely result from the interaction of gas outflow from the binary components with the surrounding medium. The outflow appears to occur both in the form of jets, generating numerous Herbig-Haro objects (HH 1266 flow), and as a weakly collimated wind responsible for the formation of the ring-like nebula around the binary and the rim of the cometary globule. We have found that the angle between the jet and the counter-jet is $168^\circ$ and discuss the complex morphology of the HH flow.

On the causes of brightness variability of the young star BP Tau

We have constructed and analysed the secular light curve of BP Tau, a classical T Tauri-type star. Wave-like variations in the average brightness were detected, with an amplitude of $ΔB\approx 0.2$ and characteristic time-scales of several decades. We argue that three deep dimming events $(ΔB \sim 1.5)$, lasting from 1 hour to several days, are caused by the eclipse of a hot (accretion) spot by dust falling onto the star together with gas. Such eclipses, albeit with smaller amplitudes, may explain the absence of a strictly defined periodicity in the brightness variations of BP Tau associated with axial rotation. We also show that within the distance range of 0.1 to 200 AU, BP Tau does not have a companion with a mass exceeding 0.2M$_\odot.$ The causes of brightness and colour index variations on different time-scales are discussed.

Optical and X-ray timing analysis of the 2018-2020 outburst and rebrightening of the black-hole transient MAXI J1820+070

We report the results of a comprehensive analysis of the multiwavelength (in optical and X-rays) and multitimescale (from months to tenths of a second) variability of the 2018-2020 outburst of the black hole transient MAXI J1820+070. During the first outburst episode, a detailed analysis of the optical photometry shows a periodicity that evolves over time and stabilises at a frequency of $1.4517(1)$ $1/d$ ($\sim0.5\%$ longer than the orbital period). This super-orbital modulation is also seen in the X-rays for a few days soon after the transition to the high-soft state. We also observed optical Quasi-Periodic Oscillations (QPOs), which correspond to some of the QPOs observed in X-rays at three different epochs when the source was in the low-hard state. In two epochs, optical QPOs with a centroid consistent with half the frequency of the most prominent X-ray QPO can be seen. If the lowest modulation frequency is the one observed in the optical, the characteristic precession frequency of MAXI J1820+070 is lower than that inferred from the `fundamental' QPO in the X-rays. Assuming that QPOs can be generated by Lense-Thirring precession, we calculate the spin of the black hole in the case where the fundamental precession frequency is tracked by the optical emission. We find a relatively slowly spinning black hole with a spin parameter $\lesssim 0.15$. The super-orbital optical and X-ray modulations observed after the disappearance of the QPOs may be triggered by the self-irradiation of the outer disc by a standard inner disc truncated at a few gravitational radii.

Evidence for symbiotic nature of 2MASS J21012803+4555377

Just less than 300 symbiotic stars are currently known in the Galaxy. The population synthesis methods predict that this amount should be 10--100 times larger. In recent years, several works have attempted to find symbiotic candidates from photometric surveys. Regular spectroscopic observations of these candidates can increase the number of known symbiotic systems. We aim to verify the symbiotic nature of 2MASS J21012803+4555377. Archive photometry and low-resolution spectra (R=1500-2000) of the candidate are presented. Besides molecular bands, the spectrum displays numerous emission lines including forbidden and high-ionization ones -- He II, [Fe VII], etc. A strong Raman-scattered O VI line is observed at 6825A. The source shows prominent excessive emission in the infrared related to a dense circumstellar dust shell. All this evidence indicates that 2MASS J21012803+4555377 should be classified as a D-type symbiotic star.

The jet of BP Tau

A strong global magnetic field of young low-mass stars and a high accretion rate are the necessary conditions for the formation of collimated outflows (jets) from these objects. But it is still unclear whether these conditions are also sufficient. We aim to check whether BP Tau, an actively accreting young star with a strong magnetic field, has a jet. We carried out narrowband SII 672 nm imaging and spectroscopic observations of BP Tau and its vicinity. We find that BP Tau is a source of a Herbig-Haro flow (assigned number HH 1181), which includes two HH objects moving from the star in opposite directions and a micro- (counter-) jet of ~ 1" projected length. The flow is oriented along position angle $59 \pm 1$ degree.

Post-AGB candidate IRAS 02143+5852: Cepheid-like variability, three-layer circumstellar dust envelope and spectral features

We present the results of multicolour $UBVR_{\text{C}}I_{\text{C}}JHK$ photometry, spectroscopic analysis and spectral energy distribution (SED) modelling for the post-AGB candidate IRAS 02143+5852. We detected Cepheid-like light variations with the full peak-to-peak amplitude $ΔV\sim0.9$ mag and the pulsation period of about 24.9 d. The phased light curves appeared typical for the W Vir Cepheids. The period-luminosity relation for the Type II Cepheids yielded the luminosity $\log L/L_{\odot}\sim2.95$. From a low-resolution spectrum, obtained at maximum brightness, the following atmospheric parameters were determined: $T_\text{eff}\sim7400$ K and $\log g\sim1.38$. This spectrum contains the emission lines H$α$, BaII $λ$6496.9, HeI $λ$10830 and Pa$β$. Spectral monitoring performed in 2019-2021 showed a significant change in the H$α$ profile and appearance of CH and CN molecular bands with pulsation phase. The metal lines are weak. Unlike typical W Vir variables, the star shows a strong excess of infrared radiation associated with the presence of a heavy dust envelope around the star. We modelled the SED using our photometry and archival data from different catalogues and determined the parameters of the circumstellar dust envelope. We conclude that IRAS~02143+5852 is a low-luminosity analogue of dusty RV Tau stars.

ZZ Tau IRS: a low mass UX Ori type star with strong wind

The results of photometric, polarimetric and spectroscopic observations of the young star ZZ Tau IRS in the visible and near-infrared bands are presented. Against the continuum of an M spectral type star about 50 emission lines of allowed (HI, HeI, NaI, SII) and forbidden (OI, OII, OIII, NI, NII, SII, CaII, FeII, NiII) transitions were identified. It was found that from the autumn of 2020 to the beginning of 2023, the brightness of the star in the visible region decreased $(ΔI \approx 1.5^m),$ and then began to return to initial level. As the visible brightness of the star declined, its colour indices decreased in the visible region, but increased in the near-IR bands. At light minimum, the degree of polarization in the $I$ band reached $\approx$ 13%, and the equivalent widths of e.g. the H$α$ and [SII] 6731 A lines increased to 376 and 79 A, respectively. Arguments are given in favour of ZZ Tau IRS being a UX Ori type star, and its variability being due to eclipses by dust clouds, which are inhomogeneities in the dusty disc wind. Forbidden lines are formed both in the disc wind and in the jet, the axis of which is oriented along PA$=61\pm 3$ degrees. The jet mass-loss rate is $>5 \times 10^{-10}$ M$_\odot$/yr, what is abnormally large for a star with a mass of $<0.3$ M$_\odot.$ Apparently, the disc wind of ZZ Tau IRS is not axially symmetric, probably due to the azimuthal asymmetry of the protoplanetary disc found earlier from ALMA observations.

Recurrent Symbiotic Nova T Coronae Borealis Before Outburst

The results of photometric and spectral observations of T CrB obtained in a wide range of wavelengths in 2011-2023 are presented. We use the near-IR light curves to determine a new ephemeris $JD_{min} = 2455828.9 + 227.55 \times E$ for the times of light minima when the red giant is located between the observer and the hot component. The flux ratio H$α$/H$β$ varied from $\sim 3$ to $\sim 8$ in 2020-2023, which may be due to a change in the flux ratio between the X-ray and optical ranges. It is shown that the value of H$α$/H$β$ anticorrelates with the rate of accretion onto the hot component of the system. Based on high-speed follow-up observations obtained on June 8, 2023, we detected a variability of the HeII $λ4686$ line with a characteristic time-scale of $\sim 25$ min, the amplitude of variability in the $B$-band was $\sim 0.07^m$. Simulations of the near-IR light curves accounting for the ellipsoidal effect allowed us to obtain the parameters of the binary system: the Roche lobe filling factor of the cool component $μ=1.0$, the mass ratio $q=M_{cool}/M_{hot} \in [0.5, 0.77]$, the orbital inclination $i \in [55^\circ, 63^\circ]$. A comparison of the light curve obtained in 2005-2023 with the 1946 outburst template made it possible to predict the date of the upcoming outburst - January 2024.

Long-term multiwavelength monitoring and reverberation mapping of NGC 2617 during a changing-look event

We present the results of photometric and spectroscopic monitoring campaigns of the changing look AGN NGC~2617 carried out from 2016 until 2022 and covering the wavelength range from the X-ray to the near-IR. The facilities included the telescopes of the SAI MSU, MASTER Global Robotic Net, the 2.3-m WIRO telescope, Swift, and others. We found significant variability at all wavelengths and, specifically, in the intensities and profiles of the broad Balmer lines. We measured time delays of ~ 6 days (~ 8 days) in the responses of the H-beta (H-alpha) line to continuum variations. We found the X-ray variations to correlate well with the UV and optical (with a small time delay of a few days for longer wavelengths). The K-band lagged the B band by 14 +- 4 days during the last 3 seasons, which is significantly shorter than the delays reported previously by the 2016 and 2017--2019 campaigns. Near-IR variability arises from two different emission regions: the outer part of the accretion disc and a more distant dust component. The HK-band variability is governed primarily by dust. The Balmer decrement of the broad-line components is inversely correlated with the UV flux. The change of the object's type, from Sy1 to Sy1.8, was recorded over a period of ~ 8 years. We interpret these changes as a combination of two factors: changes in the accretion rate and dust recovery along the line of sight.

The Post-AGB Star IRAS 07253-2001: Pulsations, Long-Term Brightness Variability and Spectral Peculiarities

The observations and comprehensive study of intermediate initial mass stars at the late stages of evolution, and after the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) in particular, are of crucial importance to identify the common properties for the stars of given group and to reveal binaries among them. This work aims to investigate photometric and spectral peculiarities of a poorly studied post-AGB candidate and infrared source IRAS 07253-2001. We present the new multicolour $UBVR_{C}I_{C}YJHK$ photometry obtained with the telescopes of the Caucasian mountain observatory and analyse it together with the data acquired by the All Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae. We report on the detection of multiperiod brightness variability caused by pulsations. A beating of close periods, the main one of 73 days and additional ones of 68 and 70 days, leads to amplitude variations. We have also detected a long-term sine trend in brightness with a period of nearly 1800 days. We suppose it to be orbital and IRAS 07253-2001 to be binary. Based on new low-resolution spectroscopic data obtained with the 2.5-m telescope of the Caucasian mountain observatory in 2020 and 2023 in the $λ$3500-7500 wavelength range we have identified spectral lines and compiled a spectral atlas. We have found the [N II], [Ni II] and [S II] forbidden emission lines in the spectrum and discuss their origin. The H$α$ line has a variable double-peaked emission component. We have derived preliminary estimates of the star's parameters and detected a variation of radial velocity with a peak-to-peak amplitude of about 30 km s$^{-1}$.

FG Sge: new multicolor photometry and short-term dust shell clearing in 2019

We present the results of a new stage of the long-term photometric study of FG Sge which is a quickly evolving central star of the planetary nebula Hen 1-5. Our new observations carried out on the SAI MSU telescopes in the optical ($BVR_CI_C$) and infrared (IR) ($JHKLM$) regions in 2008-2021 and 2013-2021, respectively, allowed us to trace the evolution of the star's brightness in recent years. The most significant observations were performed in 2019 when the star suffered a short clearing of the dust shell and became visible in $BVR_C$. Based on the spectral energy distribution of FG Sge in the 0.4-5 $μ$m wavelength range we derived the dust shell parameters: the size of dust grains $a=0.01μ$m, the inner radius temperature $T_{\text{dust}}=900$ K, optical depth $τ(K)=0.5$ ($τ(V)=4.5$), the total mass of dust $M_{\text{dust}}=7\cdot10^{-5} M_{\odot}$. After the short-term clearing of the dust shell in 2019, another dust structure was ejected that resulted in the star fading in all the observed bands. Based on the IR brightness and color curves, we estimated the dust depth growth in 2019-2020.

Spectroscopic Variability of the Compact Planetary Nebula Hb 12

We present the results of our new low-resolution spectroscopic observations of the young compact planetary nebula Hb 12 performed in 2011-2020 with SAI MSU telescopes. We have measured the intensities of more than 50 nebular emission lines in the spectral range $λ$3687-9532, detected interstellar absorption features, and conducted a search for absorptions belonging to the possible secondary component of the central star. The extinction coefficient has been estimated from the Balmer decrement to be $c$(H$β$)=1.15$\pm$0.07. The distance has been found by analyzing the interstellar extinction maps to be $D\approx2400$ pc. We have traced the history of the spectroscopic observations of Hb 12, beginning with the first spectra taken by Aller (1951) in 1945. We have detected a systematic increase in the relative intensities of the nebular [O III] $λ$4959 and $λ$5007 lines and a decrease in the relative intensity of the auroral [O III] $λ$4363 line, which has led to an increase in the observed flux ratio $F(λ4959+λ5007)/F(λ4363)$ by a factor of $\sim$4 from 1945 to the present time. The [O III]/[O II] line ratio $F(λ4363)/F(λ3727+ \lambda3729)$ remains constant, suggesting that the degree of ionization, on average, for the nebula is invariable. The temperature of the exciting star has been estimated to be $T\approx41~000$ K. We conclude that a decrease in the electron temperature and, possibly, the electron density in the [O III] line formation region is mainly responsible for the spectroscopic variability.
