Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov superfluidity in one-dimensional optical lattices

Spin-polarized attractive Fermi gases in one-dimensional (1D) optical lattices are expected to be remarkably good candidates for the observation of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase. We model these systems with an attractive Hubbard model with population imbalance. By means of the density-matrix renormalization-group method we compute the pairing correlations as well as the static spin and charge structure factors in the whole range from weak to strong coupling. We demonstrate that pairing correlations exhibit quasi-long range order and oscillations at the wave number expected from FFLO theory. However, we also show by numerically computing the mixed spin-charge static structure factor that charge and spin degrees of freedom appear to be coupled already for small imbalance. We discuss the consequences of this coupling for the observation of the FFLO phase, as well as for the stabilization of the quasi-long range order into long-range order by coupling many identical 1D systems, as in quasi-1D optical lattices.

Competition between Vortex Unbinding and Tunneling in an Optical Lattice

We study a system of two-dimensional Bose gases trapped in minima of a deep one-dimensional optical lattice potential. Increasing the tunneling amplitude between adjacent gases drives a deconfinement transition to a phase where coherence is established between neighboring two-dimensional gases. We compute the signature of this transition in the interference pattern of the system as well as in its rotational response, which provides a direct measurement of the superfluidity in the system.

Energy absorption of a Bose gas in a periodically modulated optical lattice

We compute the energy absorbed by a one dimensional system of cold bosonic atoms in an optical lattice subjected to lattice amplitude modulation periodic with time. We perform the calculation for the superfluid and the Mott insulator created by a weak lattice, and the Mott insulator in a strong lattice potential. For the latter case we show results for 3D systems as well. Our calculations, based on bosonization techniques and strong coupling methods, go beyond standard Bogoliubov theory. We show that the energy absorption rate exhibits distinctive features of low dimensional systems and Luttinger liquid physics. We compare our results with experiments and find good agreement.

The Luttinger model following a sudden interaction switch-on

The evolution of correlations in the \emph{exactly} solvable Luttinger model (a model of interacting fermions in one dimension) after a sudden interaction switch-on is \emph{analytically} studied. When the model is defined on a finite-size ring, zero-temperature correlations are periodic in time. However, in the thermodynamic limit, the system relaxes algebraically towards a stationary state which is well described, at least for some simple correlation functions, by the generalized Gibbs ensemble recently introduced by Rigol \emph{et al.} [cond-mat/0604476]. The critical exponent that characterizes the decay of the one-particle correlation function is different from the known equilibrium exponents. Experiments for which these results can be relevant are also discussed.

Interacting Bose gases in quasi-one dimensional optical lattices

We study a two-dimensional array of coupled one-dimensional (1D) tubes of interacting bosons. Such systems can be produced by loading ultra-cold atoms in anisotropic optical lattices. We investigate the effects of coupling the tubes via hopping of the bosons (i.e. Josephson coupling). In the absence of a periodic potential along the tubes, or when such potential is incommensurate with the boson density, the system undergoes a transition from an array of incoherent Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids at high temperature to an anisotropic Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), at low temperature. We determine the transition temperature and long wave-length excitations of the BEC. In addition to the usual gapless (Goldstone) mode found in standard superfluids, we also find a gapped mode associated with fluctuations of the amplitude of the order parameter. When a commensurate periodic potential is applied along the tubes, they can become 1D Mott insulators. Intertube hopping leads to a deconfinement quantum phase transition between the 1D Mott insulators and the anisotropic BEC. We also take into account the finite size of the gas tubes as realized in actual experiments. We map out the phase diagram of the quasi-1D lattice and compare our results with the existing experiments on such systems.

Dissipation-driven quantum phase transitions in a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid electrostatically coupled to a metallic gate

The dissipation induced by a metallic gate on the low-energy properties of interacting 1D electron liquids is studied. As function of the distance to the gate, or the electron density in the wire, the system undergoes a quantum phase transition from the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid state to two kinds of dissipative phases, one of them with a finite spatial correlation length. We also define a dual model, which describes an attractive one dimensional metal with a Josephson coupling to a dirty metallic lead.

Deconfinement and cold atoms in optical lattices

Despite the fact that by now one dimensional and three dimensional systems of interacting particles are reasonably well understood, very little is known on how to go from the one dimensional physics to the three dimensional one. This is in particular true in a quasi-one dimensional geometry where the hopping of particles between one dimensional chains or tubes can lead to a dimensional crossover between a Luttinger liquid and more conventional high dimensional states. Such a situation is relevant to many physical systems. Recently cold atoms in optical traps have provided a unique and controllable system in which to investigate this physics. We thus analyze a system made of coupled one dimensional tubes of interacting fermions. We explore the observable consequences, such as the phase diagram for isolated tubes, and the possibility to realize unusual superfluid phases in coupled tubes systems.

Spin-1/2 fermions on spin-dependent optical lattices

We study the phase diagram of one dimensional spin one-half fermionic cold atoms. The two ``spin'' species can have different hopping or mass. The phase diagram at equal densities of the species is found to be very rich, Mott insulators as well as superfluids. We also briefly discuss coupling 1D systems together, and some experimental signatures of these phases. In particular, we compute the spin structure factor in the small momentum limit, which should allow the spin gap to be detected.

Edge excitations and Topological orders in rotating Bose gases

The edge excitations and related topological orders of correlated states of a fast rotating Bose gas are studied. Using exact diagonalization of small systems, we compute the energies and number of edge excitations, as well as the boson occupancy near the edge for various states. The chiral Luttinger-liquid theory of Wen is found to be a good description of the edges of the bosonic Laughlin and other states identified as members of the principal Jain sequence for bosons. However, we find that in a harmonic trap the edge of the state identified as the Moore-Read (Pfaffian) state shows a number of anomalies. An experimental way of detecting these correlated states is also discussed.

Are the Tonks regimes in the continuum and on the lattice truly equivalent?

Motivated by recent experiments, we compare the Tonks (i.e. hard-core boson gas) regime achieved in an optical lattice with the Tonks regime of a one-dimensional Bose gas in the continuum. For the lattice gas, we compute the local (i.e. on-site) two-body correlations as a function of temperature and the filling of the lattice. It is found that this function saturates to a constant value with increasing temperature. Furthermore, the parameter that characterizes the long-distance correlations in the lattice Tonks regime is also obtained, showing that on the lattice the long-distance correlations enter the Tonks regime more rapidly than in the continuum.

Deconfinement in a 2D optical lattice of coupled 1D boson systems

We show that a two-dimensional (2D) array of 1D interacting boson tubes has a deconfinement transition between a 1D Mott insulator and a 3D superfluid for commensurate fillings and a dimensional crossover for the incommensurate case. We determine the phase diagram and excitations of this system and discuss the consequences for Bose condensates loaded in 2D optical lattices.

Bosonizing one-dimensional cold atomic gases

We present results for the long-distance asymptotics of correlation functions of mesoscopic one-dimensional systems with periodic and open (Dirichlet) boundary conditions, as well as at finite temperature in the thermodynamic limit. The results are obtained using Haldane's harmonic-fluid approach (also known as ``bosonization''), and are valid for both bosons and fermions, in weakly and strongly interacting regimes. The harmonic-fluid approach and the method to compute the correlation functions using conformal transformations are explained in great detail. As an application relevant to one-dimensional systems of cold atomic gases, we consider the model of bosons interacting with a zero-range potential. The Luttinger-liquid parameters are obtained from the exact solution by solving the Bethe-ansatz equations in finite-size systems. The range of applicability of the approach is discussed, and the prefactor of the one-body density matrix of bosons is fixed by finding an appropriate parametrization of the weak-coupling result. The formula thus obtained is shown to be accurate, when compared with recent diffusion Montecarlo calculations, within less than 10%. The experimental implications of these results for Bragg scattering experiments at low and high momenta are also discussed.

Instabilities in binary mixtures of one-dimensional quantum degenerate gases

We show that one-dimensional binary mixtures of bosons or of a boson and a spin-polarized fermion are Luttinger liquids with the following instabilities: i) For different particle densities, strong attraction between the mixture components leads to collapse, while strong repulsion leads to demixing, ii) For a low-density mixture of two gases of impenetrable bosons (or a spin-polarized fermion and an impenetrable boson) of equal densities, the system develops a gap and exhibits enhanced pairing fluctuations when there is attraction between the components. In the boson-fermion mixture, the pairing fluctuations occur at finite momentum. Our conclusions apply to mixtures both on the continuum and on optical lattices away from integer or fractional commensurability.

Surface modes of ultracold atomic clouds with very large number of vortices

We study the surface modes of some of the vortex liquids recently found by means of exact diagonalizations in systems of rapidly rotating bosons. In contrast to the surface modes of Bose condensates, we find that the surface waves have a frequency linear in the excitation angular momentum, $\hbar l > 0$. Furthermore, in analogy with the edge waves of electronic quantum Hall states, these excitations are {\it chiral}, that is, they can be excited only for values of $l$ that increase the total angular momentum of the vortex liquid. However, differently from the quantum Hall phenomena for electrons, we also find other excitations that are approximately degenerate in the laboratory frame with the surface modes, and which decrease the total angular momentum by $l$ quanta. The surface modes of the Laughlin, as well as other scalar and vector boson states are analyzed, and their {\it observable} properties characterized. We argue that measurement of the response of a vortex liquid to a weak time-dependent potential that imparts angular momentum to the system should provide valuable information to characterize the vortex liquid. In particular, the intensity of the signal of the surface waves in the dynamic structure factor has been studied and found to depend on the type of vortex liquid. We point out that the existence of surface modes has observable consequences on the density profile of the Laughlin state. These features are due to the strongly correlated behavior of atoms in the vortex liquids. We point out that these correlations should be responsible for a remarkable stability of some vortex liquids with respect to three-body losses.

One-dimensional optical lattices and impenetrable bosons

We study the limit of large onsite repulsion of the one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model at low densities, and derive a strong-coupling effective Hamiltonian. By taking the lattice parameter to zero, the Hamiltonian becomes a continuum model of fermions with attractive interactions. The leading corrections to the internal energy of a hard-core-boson (Tonks) gas as well as the (finite temperature) pair correlations of a strongly interacting Bose gas are calculated. We explore the possibility of realizing, in an optical lattice, a Luttinger liquid with stronger density correlations than the Tonks gas. A quantum phase transition to a charge-density-wave Mott insulator is also discussed.

Low-Energy Properties of a One-dimensional System of Interacting bosons with Boundaries

The ground state properties and low-lying excitations of a (quasi) one-dimensional system of longitudinally confined interacting bosons are studied. This is achieved by extending Haldane's harmonic-fluid description to open boundary conditions. The boson density, one-particle density matrix, and momentum distribution are obtained accounting for finite-size and boundary effects. Friedel oscillations are found in the density. Finite-size scaling of the momentum distribution at zero momentum is proposed as a method to obtain from the experiment the exponent that governs phase correlations. The strong correlations between bosons induced by reduced dimensionality and interactions are displayed by a Bijl-Jastrow wave function for the ground state, which is also derived.

Time-dependent density-matrix renormalization group: A systematic method for the study of quantum many-body systems out-of-equilibrium

The density-matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) algorithm is extended to treat time-dependent problems. The method provides a systematic and robust tool to explore out-of-equilibrium phenomena in quantum many-body systems. We illustrate the method by showing that attractive interactions enhance the tunneling current between two Luttinger liquids, whereas repulsive interactions suppress it, in qualitative agreement with analytical predictions. Enhancement of the transport current through a quantum dot in the Kondo regime is also exhibited.
