Static and dynamic spin correlations in the spin-glass phase of slightly-doped La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4

Neutron scattering experiments reveal that a diagonal spin modulation, which is a one-dimensional modulation rotated away by 45$^\circ$ from that in the superconducting phase, occurs universally across the insulating spin-glass phase in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (0.02$\le x\le$0.055). This establishes an intimate relation between the magnetism and the transport properties in the high-temperature copper oxide superconductors. Furthermore, it is found that the charge density per unit length estimated using a charge stripe model is almost constant throughout the phase diagram, even when the modulation rotates away by 45$^\circ$ at the superconducting boundary. However, at the lowest values for $x$ the density changes approaching 1 hole/Cu as in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$NiO$_4$. Magnetic excitation spectra suggest that magnetic correlations change from incommensurate to commensurate at $ω\sim$7 meV and $T\sim$70 K, indicating a characteristic energy for the incommensurate structure of 6-7 meV.

Energy Spectrum of Spin Fluctuations in Superconducting La2-xSrxCuO4 (0.10 < x < 0.25)

The energy spectrum of incommensurate spin fluctuations in superconducting Sr-doped La2CuO4 has been studied by inelastic neutron scattering experiments. An energy gap in the spin excitation spectrum is observed in the superconducting state of optimally doped (x=0.15) and slightly overdoped (x=0.18) samples. At temperatures well below Tc, the incommensurate peaks diminish rapidly in intensity with decreasing energy below ~8meV and merge into the background below ~3.5meV for x=0.15 and ~4.5meV for x=0.18. For both samples, the energy spectrum of the q-integrated spin susceptibility, x"(w), exhibits an enhancement around 7meV, which is caused by a broadening in the momentum width of the incommensurate peaks. The gap-like structure in the energy spectrum and the enhancement of x"(w) survive at Tc. On the other hand, for both underdoped (x=0.10) and heavily overdoped (x=0.25) samples there is neither a clear energy gap nor an enhancement of x"(w) below Tc.

Fano Resonances in Electronic Transport through a Single Electron Transistor

We have observed asymmetric Fano resonances in the conductance of a single electron transistor resulting from interference between a resonant and a nonresonant path through the system. The resonant component shows all the features typical of quantum dots, but the origin of the non-resonant path is unclear. A unique feature of this experimental system, compared to others that show Fano line shapes, is that changing the voltages on various gates allows one to alter the interference between the two paths.

Incommensurate Geometry of the Elastic Magnetic Peaks in Superconducting La1.88Sr0.12CuO4

We report magnetic neutron scattering measurements of incommensurate magnetic order in a superconducting single crystal of La1.88Sr0.12CuO4. We find that the incommensurate wavevectors which describe the static magnetism do not lie along high-symmetry directions of the underlying CuO2 lattice. The positions of the elastic magnetic peaks are consistent with those found in excess-oxygen doped La2CuO4+y. This behavior differs from the precise magnetic order found in the low temperature tetragonal La1.6-xNd0.4SrxCuO4 material for which stripes of spin and charge have been observed. These observations have clear implications for any stripe model proposed to describe the static magnetism in orthorhombic La2CuO4-based superconductors.

Direct Observation of a One Dimensional Static Spin Modulation in Insulating La1.95Sr0.05CuO4

We report the results of an extensive elastic neutron scattering study of the incommensurate (IC) static spin correlations in La1.95Sr0.05CuO4 which is an insulating spin glass at low temperatures. The present neutron scattering experiments on the same x=0.05 crystal employ a narrower instrumental Q-resolution and thereby have revealed that the crystal has only two orthorhombic twins at low temperatures with relative populations of 2:1. We find that, in a single twin, only two satellites are observed at (1, +/-0.064, L)(ortho) and (0, 1+/-0.064, L)(ortho), that is, the modulation vector is only along the orthorhombic b*-axis. This demonstrates unambiguously that La1.95Sr0.05CuO4 has a one-dimensional static diagonal spin modulation at low temperatures, consistent with certain stripe models. We have also reexamined the x=0.04 crystal that previously was reported to show a single commensurate peak. By mounting the sample in the (H, K, 0) zone, we have discovered that the x=0.04 sample in fact has the same IC structure as the $x=0.05$ sample. The incommensurability parameter d for x=0.04 and 0.05, where d is the distance from (1/2, 1/2) in tetragonal reciprocal lattice units, follows the linear relation d=x. These results demonstrate that the insulator to superconductor transition in the under doped regime (0.05 </= x </= 0.06) in La2-xSrxCuO4 is coincident with a transition from diagonal to collinear static stripes at low temperatures thereby evincing the intimate coupling between the one dimensional spin density modulation and the superconductivity.

Freezing of anisotropic spin clusters in La1.98Sr0.02CuO4

A spin-glass compound, La$_{1.98}$Sr$_{0.02}$CuO$_4$, shows quasi-three-dimensional magnetic ordering below $\sim$40 K. A remarkable feature is that the magnetic correlation length along the orthorhombic $a\rm_{ortho}$ axis is much longer than that along the $b\rm_{ortho}$ axis, suggesting that the spin structure is closely related to the diagonal stripe structure. The spin-glass state can be expressed as a random freezing of quasi-three-dimensional spin clusters with anisotropic spin correlations ($ξ'_a\sim160$ Å, $ξ'_b\sim25$ Å, and $ξ'_c\sim4.7$ Åat 1.6 K). The new magnetic state is important as an intermediate phase between the three-dimensional antiferromagnetic ordered phase in La$_2$CuO$_4$ and the incommensurate phase in La$_{1.95}$Sr$_{0.05}$CuO$_4$ in which the positions of the incommensurate peaks are rotated by 45$^\circ$ in reciprocal space about ($π$,$π$) from those observed in the superconducting La$_2$CuO$_4$ compounds.

Neutron Scattering Study of Spin Density Wave Order in the Superconducting State of Excess-Oxygen-Doped La2CuO4+y

We report neutron scattering measurements of spin density wave order within the superconducting state of a single crystal of predominately stage-4 La2CuO4+y with a Tc(onset) of 42 K. The low temperature elastic magnetic scattering is incommensurate with the lattice and is characterized by long-range order in the copper-oxide plane with the spin direction identical to that in the insulator. Between neighboring planes, the spins exhibit short-range correlations with a stacking arrangement reminiscent of that in the undoped antiferromagnetic insulator. The elastic magnetic peak intensity appears at the same temperature within the errors as the superconductivity, suggesting that the two phenomena are strongly correlated. These observations directly reveal the persistent influence of the antiferromagnetic order as the doping level increases from the insulator to the superconductor. In addition, our results confirm that spin density wave order for incommensurabilities near 1/8 is a robust feature of the La2CuO4-based superconductors.

Observation of New Incommensurate Magnetic Correlations at the Lower Critical Concentration for Superconductivity (x=0.05) in La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO4

Neutron-scattering experiments have been performed on lightly-doped La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO4 single crystals in both the insulating (x=0.03,0.04,0.05) and superconducting (x=0.06) regions. Elastic magnetic peaks are observed at low temperatures in all samples with the maximum peak linewidth occuring at the critical concentration x_c=0.05. New incommensurate peaks are observed only at x=0.05, the positions of which are rotated by 45 degrees in reciprocal space about (pi,pi) from those observed for x>=0.06 in the superconducting phase.

Neutron Scattering Study of Elastic Magnetic Signals in Superconducting La1.94Sr0.06Cu4

Recent neutron-scattering experiments on La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO4 single crystals by Wakimoto et al. have revealed that elastic magnetic peaks appear at low temperatures in both insulating (x=0.02-0.05) and superconducting (x=0.06) samples. We have carried out further investigations particularly on the elastic incommensurate peaks for x=0.06, and found that the integrated intensity drastically changes across the low temperature insulator- superconductor boundary; the intensity of x=0.06 is 4 times smaller than that of x=0.05, while the intensity in the insulating region stays constant.

Instantaneous Spin Correlations in La2CuO4

We have carried out a neutron scattering study of the instantaneous spin-spin correlations in La2CuO4 (T_N = 325 K) over the temperature range 337 K to 824 K. Incident neutron energies varying from 14.7 meV to 115 meV have been employed in order to guarantee that the energy integration is carried out properly. The results so-obtained for the spin correlation length as a function of temperature when expressed in reduced units agree quantitatively both with previous results for the two dimensional (2D) tetragonal material Sr2CuO2Cl2 and with quantum Monte Carlo results for the nearest neighbor square lattice S=1/2 Heisenberg model. All of the experimental and numerical results for the correlation length are well described without any adjustable parameters by the behavior predicted for the quantum non-linear sigma model in the low temperature renormalized classical regime. The amplitude, on the other hand, deviates subtly from the predicted low temperature behavior. These results are discussed in the context of recent theory for the 2D quantum Heisenberg model.

Quantum Monte Carlo Study of Weakly Coupled Spin Ladders

We report a quantum Monte Carlo study of the thermodynamic properties of arrays of spin ladders with various widths ($n$), coupled via a weak inter-ladder exchange coupling $αJ$, where $J$ is the intra-ladder coupling both along and between the chains. This coupled ladder system serves as a simplified model for the magnetism of presumed ordered spin and charge stripes in the two-dimensional CuO$_2$ planes of hole-doped copper oxides. Our results for $n=3$ with weak inter-ladder coupling $α=0.05$, estimated from the $t-t'-t''-J$ model, show good agreement with the ordering temperature of the recently observed spin density wave condensation in La$_2$CuO$_{4+y}$. We show that there exists a quantum critical point at $α_c \simeq 0.07$ for $n=4$, and determine the phase diagram. Our data at this quantum critical point agree quantitatively with the universal scaling predicted by the quantum nonlinear $σ$ model. We also report results on random mixtures of $n=2$ and $n=3$ ladders, which correspond to the doping region near but above 1/8. Our study on the magnetic static structure factor reveals a saturation of the incommensurability of the spin correlations around 1/8, while the incommensurability of the charge stripes grows linearly with hole concentration. The implications of this result for the interpretation of neutron scattering experiments on the dynamic spin fluctuations in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ are discussed.

Statistics of the Coulomb blockade peak spacings of a silicon quantum dot

We present an experimental study of the fluctuations of Coulomb blockade peak positions of a quantum dot. The dot is defined by patterning the two-dimensional electron gas of a silicon MOSFET structure using stacked gates. This permits variation of the number of electrons on the quantum dot without significant shape distortion. The ratio of charging energy to single particle energy is considerably larger than in comparable GaAs/AlGaAs quantum dots. The statistical distribution of the conductance peak spacings in the Coulomb blockade regime was found to be unimodal and does not follow the Wigner surmise. The fluctuations of the spacings are much larger than the typical single particle level spacing and thus clearly contradict the expectation of random matrix theory.

An X-Ray Induced Structural Transition in La_0.875Sr_0.125MnO_3

We report a synchrotron x-ray scattering study of the magnetoresistive manganite La_0.875Sr_0.125MnO_3. At low temperatures, this material undergoes an x-ray induced structural transition at which charge ordering of Mn^3+ and Mn^4+ ions characteristic to the low-temperature state of this compound is destroyed. The transition is persistent but the charge-ordered state can be restored by heating above the charge-ordering transition temperature and subsequently cooling. The charge-ordering diffraction peaks, which are broadened at all temperatures, broaden more upon x-ray irradiation, indicating the finite correlation length of the charge-ordered state. Together with the recent reports on x-ray induced transitions in Pr_(1-x)Ca_xMnO_3, our results demonstrate that the photoinduced structural change is a common property of the charge-ordered perovskite manganites.

From the Kondo Regime to the Mixed-Valence Regime in a Single-Electron Transistor

We demonstrate that the conductance through a single-electron transistor at low temperature is in quantitative agreement with predictions of the equilibrium Anderson model. When an unpaired electron is localized within the transistor, the Kondo effect is observed. Tuning the unpaired electron's energy toward the Fermi level in nearby leads produces a cross-over between the Kondo and mixed-valence regimes of the Anderson model.

Kondo Physics in a Single Electron Transistor

The question of how localized electrons interact with delocalized electrons is central to many problems at the forefront of solid state physics. The simplest example is the Kondo phenomenon, which occurs when an impurity atom with an unpaired electron is placed in a metal, and the energy of the unpaired electron is far below the Fermi energy. At low temperatures a spin singlet state is formed between the unpaired localized electron and delocalized electrons at the Fermi energy. The confined droplet of electrons interacting with the leads of a single electron transistor (SET) is closely analogous to an impurity atom interacting with the delocalized electrons in a metal. (Meir, Wingreen and Lee, 1993) We report here measurements on a new generation of SETs that display all the aspects of the Kondo phenomenon: the spin singlet forms and causes an enhancement of the zero-bias conductance when the number of electrons on the artificial atom is odd but not when it is even. The singlet is altered by applying a voltage or magnetic field or by increasing the temperature, all in ways that agree with predictions. (Wingreen and Meir 1994)

Magnetic Field Dependence of the Level Spacing of a Small Electron Droplet

The temperature dependence of conductance resonances is used to measure the evolution with the magnetic field of the average level spacing $Δε$ of a droplet containing $\sim 30$ electrons created by lateral confinement of a two-dimensional electron gas in GaAs. $Δε$ becomes very small ($< 30μ$eV) near two critical magnetic fields at which the symmetry of the droplet changes and these decreases of $Δε$ are predicted by Hartree-Fock (HF) for charge excitations. Between the two critical fields, however, the largest measured $Δε= 100μ$eV is an order of magnitude smaller than predicted by HF but comparable to the Zeeman splitting at this field, which suggests that the spin degrees of freedom are important. Intercalation and Staging Behavior in Super-Oxygenated $La_2CuO_{4 + δ}$

A high temperature electrochemical oxidation process has been used to produce large single crystals of $La_2CuO_{4 + δ}$ suitable for neutron scattering experiments. Below room temperature the oxygen-rich phases have structural superlattice scattering peaks which indicate new periodicities ranging from 2 to 6.6 layers perpendicular to the copper oxide planes. A model structure originally proposed for $La_2NiO_{4 + δ}$ can account for the superlattice peaks as a result of anti-phase domain boundaries between different tilt directions of the CuO$_6$ octahedra. Within this model, the changes in CuO$_6$ tilt directions are induced by segregated layers of interstitial oxygen which order in a manner similar to intercalants in graphite. This structural model thus clarifies previous work and establishes $La_2CuO_{4 + δ}$ as a unique lamellar superconducting system with annealed disorder.

Conductance of an Artificial Atom in Strong Magnetic Fields

The conductance resulting from resonant tunneling through a droplet of $N \sim 30$ electrons is used to measure its chemical potential $μ_N$. Abrupt shifts of $μ_N$ occur at sharply defined values of the magnetic field, at which the state of the droplet changes. These are used to study part of the phase-diagram of the droplet in strong magnetic fields; we find evidence for a new phase in the spin polarized regime. We make a detailed comparison between theory and experiment: Hartree-Fock provides a quantitative description of the measurements when both spin-split states of the lowest orbital Landau level are occupied and a qualitative one in the spin polarized regime.
