Exchange interactions and magnetic properties of the layered vanadates CaV2O5, MgV2O5, CaV3O7 and CaV4O9

We have performed ab-initio calculations of exchange couplings in the layered vanadates CaV2O5, MgV2O5, CaV3O7 and CaV4O9. The uniform susceptibility of the Heisenberg model with these exchange couplings is then calculated by quantum Monte Carlo method; it agrees well with the experimental measurements. Based on our results we naturally explain the unusual magnetic properties of these materials, especially the huge difference in spin gap between CaV2O5 and MgV2O5, the unusual long range order in CaV3O7 and the "plaquette resonating valence bond (RVB)" spin gap in CaV4O9.

Computer simulations of defects in perovskite KNbO3 crystals

An ab initio LMTO approach and semi-empirical quantum chemical INDO method have been used for supercell calculations of basic point defects - F-type centers and hole polarons bound to cation vacancy - in partly covalent perovskite KNbO3. We predict the existence of both one-site and two-site (molecular) polarons with close absorption energies (~ 1 eV). The relevant experimental data are discussed and interpreted.

Intermediate-spin state and properties of LaCoO_3

The electronic structure of the perovskite LaCoO$_3$ for different spin states of Co ions was calculated in the LDA+U approach. The ground state was found to be a nonmagnetic insulator with Co ions in a low-spin state. Somewhat higher in energy we found two intermediate-spin states followed by a high-spin state at significantly higher energy. The calculation results show that Co 3$d$ states of $t_{2g}$ symmetry form narrow bands which could easily localize whilst $e_g$ orbitals, due to their strong hybridization with the oxygen 2$p$ states, form a broad $σ^*$ band. With the increase of temperature which is simulated by the corresponding increase of the lattice parameter, the transition from the low- to intermediate-spin states occurs. This intermediate-spin (occupation $t_{2g}^5e_g^1$) can develop an orbital ordering which can account for the nonmetallic nature of LaCoO$_3$ at 90 K$<$T$<$500 K. Possible explanations of the magnetic behavior and gradual insulating-metal transition are suggested.

CrO2: a self-doped double exchange ferromagnet

Band structure calculations of CrO2 carried out in the LSDA+U approach reveal a clear picture of the physics behind the metallic ferromagnetic properties. Arguments are presented that the metallic ferromagnetic oxide CrO2 belongs to a class of materials in which magnetic ordering exists due to double exchange (in this respect CrO2 turns out to be similar to the CMR manganates). It is concluded that CrO2 has small or even negative charge transfer gap which can result in self-doping. Certain experiments to check the proposed picture are suggested.

First-principles Calculations of the Electronic Structure and Spectra of Strongly Correlated Systems: Dynamical Mean-field Theory

A recently developed dynamical mean-field theory in the iterated perturbation theory approximation was used as a basis for construction of the "first principles" calculation scheme for investigating electronic structure of strongly correlated electron systems. This scheme is based on Local Density Approximation (LDA) in the framework of the Linearized Muffin-Tin-Orbitals (LMTO) method. The classical example of the doped Mott-insulator La_{1-x}Sr_xTiO_3 was studied by the new method and the results showed qualitative improvement in agreement with experimental photoemission spectra.

The orbital and charge ordering in Pr_{1-x}Ca_xMnO_3 (x=0 and 0.5) from the ab initio calculations

The electronic structure of the doped manganites Pr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$MnO$_3$ was calculated by the LSDA+U method which takes into account the local Coulomb interaction between d-electrons of transition metal ions. In contrast to the standard local spin density approximation (LSDA) no Jahn-Teller lattice distortions are needed to reproduce the experimentally observed orbital ordering in the undoped PrMnO$_3$. The correct ground state : a charge and orbital ordered antiferromagnetic insulator, was obtained for Pr$_{1/2}$Ca$_{1/2}$MnO$_3$. The results are in good agreement with the neutron diffraction data.
