Quantum Measurements and Gates by Code Deformation

The usual scenario in fault tolerant quantum computation involves certain amount of qubits encoded in each code block, transversal operations between them and destructive measurements of ancillary code blocks. We introduce a new approach in which a single code layer is used for the entire computation, in particular a surface code. Qubits can be created, manipulated and non-destructively measured by code deformations that amount to `cut and paste' operations in the surface. All the interactions between qubits remain purely local in a two-dimensional setting.

An Interferometry-Free Protocol for Demonstrating Topological Order

We propose a protocol to demonstrate the topological order of a spin-1/2 lattice model with four-body interactions. Unlike other proposals, it does not rely on the controlled movement of quasiparticles, thus eliminating the addressing, decoherence and dynamical phase problems related to them. Rather, the protocol profits from the degeneracy of the ground state. It involves the addition of Zeeman terms to the original Hamiltonian that are used to create holes and move them around in the system.

VBS State Induced by Impurity Frustration in Cr8Ni

We provide a physically meaningful picture of the nature of the ground state of the Cr8Ni compound in the regime where it is a spin singlet. According to this picture, the anisotropy of the $Ni$ atom in the $Cr$ ring induces a dimerization in the molecule that makes the ground state to stabilize in a Valence Bond Solid phase of virtual spins. We characterize rigorously this phase by means of a particular non-local order parameter denoted the generalized string order parameter. In the completely antiferromagnetic regime, the system becomes frustrated. We have performed a numerical real-time evolution study of the correlations between the spin of the $Ni$ impurity and the rest of the spins in order to show the reaction of the system under this frustration. We provide results that manifestly show the agreement with the Valence Bond Solid picture introduced.

A Family of Non-Abelian Kitaev Models on a Lattice: Topological Confinement and Condensation

We study a family of non-Abelian topological models in a lattice that arise by modifying the Kitaev model through the introduction of single-qudit terms. The effect of these terms amounts to a reduction of the discrete gauge symmetry with respect to the original systems, which corresponds to a generalized mechanism of explicit symmetry breaking. The topological order is either partially lost or completely destroyed throughout the various models. The new systems display condensation and confinement of the topological charges present in the standard non-Abelian Kitaev models, which we study in terms of ribbon operator algebras.

Nested Topological Order

We introduce the concept of nested topological order in a class of exact quantum lattice Hamiltonian models with non-abelian discrete gauge symmetry. The topological order present in the models can be partially destroyed by introducing a gauge symmetry reduction mechanism. When symmetry is reduced in several islands only, this imposes boundary conditions to the rest of the system giving rise to topological ground state degeneracy. This degeneracy is related to the existence of topological fluxes in between islands or, alternatively, hidden charges at islands. Additionally, island deformations give rise to an extension of topological quantum computation beyond quasiparticles.

Non-relativistic limit in the 2+1 Dirac Oscillator: A Ramsey Interferometry Effect

We study the non-relativistic limit of a paradigmatic model in Relativistic Quantum Mechanics, the two-dimensional Dirac oscillator. Remarkably, we find a novel kind of Zitterbewegung which persists in this non-relativistic regime, and leads to an observable deformation of the particle orbit. This effect can be interpreted in terms of a Ramsey Interferometric phenomenon, allowing an insightful connection between Relativistic Quantum Mechanics and Quantum Optics. Furthermore, subsequent corrections to the non-relativistic limit, which account for the usual spin-orbit Zitterbewegung, can be neatly understood in terms of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer.

Twisted Order Parameter applied to Dimerized Ladders

We apply the twisted order parameter (TOP) for dimerized quantum spin ladders to locate the critical phases that separate gapped phases representing quantum spin liquids of various types. Using the DMRG, method we find that the TOP is a good order parameter for these systems regardless the number of legs. As a check, we reproduce with DMRG and periodic boundary conditions the computations previously done with Quantum Montecarlo for one-dimensional S=1/2, S=1, S=3/2 and S=2 Heisenberg chains with alternating bonds.

Chirality Quantum Phase Transition in the Dirac oscillator

We study a relativistic spin-1/2 fermion subjected to a Dirac oscillator coupling and a constant magnetic field. An interplay between opposed chirality interactions culminates in the appearance of a relativistic quantum phase transition, which can be fully characterized. We obtain analytical expressions for the energy gap, order parameter, and canonical quantum fluctuations across the critical point. Moreover, we also discuss the effect of this phase transition on the statistics of the chiral bosonic ensemble, where its super- or sub-Poissonian nature can be controled by means of external parameters. Finally, we study the entanglement properties between the degrees of freedom in the relativistic ground state, where an interesting transition between a bi-separable and a genuinely tripartite entangled state occurs.

A Lorentz Invariant Pairing Mechanism: Relativistic Cooper Pairs

We study a Lorentz invariant pairing mechanism that arises when two relativistic spin-1/2 fermions are subjected to a Dirac string coupling. In the weak coupling regime, we find remarkable analogies between this relativistic bound system and the well known superconducting Cooper pair. As the coupling strength is raised, quenched phonons become unfrozen and dynamically contribute to the gluing mechanism, which translates into novel features of this relativistic superconducting pair.

Statistical Mechanical Models and Topological Color Codes

We find that the overlapping of a topological quantum color code state, representing a quantum memory, with a factorized state of qubits can be written as the partition function of a 3-body classical Ising model on triangular or Union Jack lattices. This mapping allows us to test that different computational capabilities of color codes correspond to qualitatively different universality classes of their associated classical spin models. By generalizing these statistical mechanical models for arbitrary inhomogeneous and complex couplings, it is possible to study a measurement-based quantum computation with a color code state and we find that their classical simulatability remains an open problem. We complement the meaurement-based computation with the construction of a cluster state that yields the topological color code and this also gives the possibility to represent statistical models with external magnetic fields.

Critical Lines and Massive Phases in Quantum Spin Ladders with Dimerization

We determine the existence of critical lines in dimerized quantum spin ladders in their phase diagram of coupling constants using the finite-size DMRG algorithm. We consider both staggered and columnar dimerization patterns, and antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic inter-leg couplings. The existence of critical phases depends on the precise combination of these patterns. The nature of the massive phases separating the critical lines are characterized with generalized string order parameters that determine their valence bond solid (VBS) content.

Dirac Cat States in Relativistic Landau Levels

We show that a relativistic version of Schrodinger cat states, here called Dirac cat states, can be built in relativistic Landau levels when an external magnetic field couples to a relativistic spin 1/2 charged particle. Under suitable initial conditions, the associated Dirac equation produces unitarily Dirac cat states involving the orbital quanta of the particle in a well defined mesoscopic regime. We demonstrate that the proposed Dirac cat states have a purely relativistic origin and cease to exist in the non-relativistic limit. In this manner, we expect to open relativistic quantum mechanics to the rich structures of quantum optics and quantum information.

Exact Mapping of the 2+1 Dirac Oscillator onto the Jaynes-Cummings Model: Ion-Trap Experimental Proposal

We study the dynamics of the 2+1 Dirac oscillator exactly and find spin oscillations due to a {\it Zitterbewegung} of purely relativistic origin. We find an exact mapping of this quantum-relativistic system onto a Jaynes-Cummings model, describing the interaction of a two-level atom with a quantized single-mode field. This equivalence allows us to map a series of quantum optical phenomena onto the relativistic oscillator, and viceversa. We make a realistic experimental proposal, at reach with current technology, for studying the equivalence of both models using a single trapped ion.

DMRG study of the Bond Alternating \textbf{S}=1/2 Heisenberg ladder with Ferro-Antiferromagnetic couplings

We obtain the phase diagram in the parameter space $(J'/J, γ)$ and an accurate estimate of the critical line separating the different phases. We show several measuments of the magnetization, dimerization, nearest neighbours correlation, and density of energy in the different zones of the phase diagram, as well as a measurement of the string order parameter proposed as the non vanishing phase order parameter characterizing Haldane phases. All these results will be compared in the limit $J'/J\gg 1$ with the behaviour of the $\textbf{S}=1$ Bond Alternated Heisenberg Chain (BAHC). The analysis of our data supports the existence of a dimer phase separated by a critical line from a Haldane one, which has exactly the same nature as the Haldane phase in the $\textbf{S}=1$ BAHC.

Optimal Resources for Topological 2D Stabilizer Codes: Comparative Study

We study the resources needed to construct topological 2D stabilizer codes as a way to estimate in part their efficiency and this leads us to perform a comparative study of surface codes and color codes. This study clarifies the similarities and differences between these two types of stabilizer codes. We compute the error correcting rate $C:=n/d^2$ for surface codes $C_s$ and color codes $C_c$ in several instances. On the torus, typical values are $C_s=2$ and $C_c=3/2$, but we find that the optimal values are $C_s=1$ and $C_c=9/8$. For planar codes, a typical value is $C_s=2$, while we find that the optimal values are $C_s=1$ and $C_c=3/4$. In general, a color code encodes twice as much logical qubits as a surface code does.

Topological Quantum Distillation

We construct a class of topological quantum codes to perform quantum entanglement distillation. These codes implement the whole Clifford group of unitary operations in a fully topological manner and without selective addressing of qubits. This allows us to extend their application also to quantum teleportation, dense coding and computation with magic states.

Topological Computation without Braiding

We show that universal quantum computation can be performed within the ground state of a topologically ordered quantum system, which is a naturally protected quantum memory. In particular, we show how this can be achieved using brane-net condensates in 3-colexes. The universal set of gates is implemented without selective addressing of physical qubits and, being fully topologically protected, it does not rely on quasiparticle excitations or their braiding.

Relativity and Lorentz Invariance of Entanglement Distillability

We study entanglement distillability of bipartite mixed spin states under Wigner rotations induced by Lorentz transformations. We define weak and strong criteria for relativistic isoentangled and isodistillable states to characterize relative and invariant behavior of entanglement and distillability. We exemplify these criteria in the context of Werner states, where fully analytical methods can be achieved and all relevant cases presented.
