Pulsars in a Bubble? Following Electron Diffusion in the Galaxy with TeV Gamma Rays

TeV Halos, extended regions of TeV gamma-ray emission around middle-aged pulsars, have recently been established as a new source class in gamma-ray astronomy. These halos have been attributed to relativistic electrons and positrons that have left the acceleration region close to the pulsar and are diffusing in the surrounding medium. Measuring the morphology of TeV Halos enables for the first time a direct measurement of the electron diffusion on scales of tens of parsecs. There are hints that the presence of relativistic particles affects the diffusion rate in the pulsars' surroundings. Understanding electron diffusion is necessary to constrain the origins of the apparent `excess' of cosmic-ray positrons at tens of GeV. TeV Halos can also be used to find mis-aligned pulsars, as well as study certain properties of the Galaxy's pulsar population. Future VHE gamma-ray instruments will detect more of those TeV Halos and determine how much pulsars contribute to the observed cosmic-ray electron and positron fluxes, and how they affect diffusion in their environments.

Pierre Auger Atmosphere-Monitoring Lidar System

The fluorescence-detection techniques of cosmic-ray air-shower experiments require precise knowledge of atmospheric properties to reconstruct air-shower energies. Up to now, the atmosphere in desert-like areas was assumed to be stable enough so that occasional calibration of atmospheric attenuation would suffice to reconstruct shower profiles. However, serious difficulties have been reported in recent fluorescence-detector experiments causing systematic errors in cosmic ray spectra at extreme energies. Therefore, a scanning backscatter lidar system has been constructed for the Pierre Auger Observatory in Malargue, Argentina, where on-line atmospheric monitoring will be performed. One lidar system is already deployed at the Los Leones fluorescence detector site and the second one is currently (April 2003) under construction at the Coihueco site. Next to the established ones, a novel analysis method with assumption on horizontal invariance, using multi-angle measurements is shown to unambiguously measure optical depth, as well as absorption and backscatter coefficient.

A Water Tank Cerenkov Detector for Very High Energy Astroparticles

Extensive airshower detection is an important issue in current astrophysics endeavours. Surface arrays detectors are a common practice since they are easy to handle and have a 100% duty cycle. In this work we present an experimental study of the parameters relevant to the design of a water Cerenkov detector for high energy airshowers. This detector is conceived as part of the surface array of the Pierre Auger Project, which is expected to be sensitive to ultra high energy cosmic rays. In this paper we focus our attention in the geometry of the tank and its inner liner material, discussing pulse shapes and charge collections.
