Magnetic and superconducting instabilities in the periodic Anderson model: an RPA stud

We study the magnetic and superconducting instabilities of the periodic Anderson model with infinite Coulomb repulsion U in the random phase approximation. The Neel temperature and the superconducting critical temperature are obtained as functions of electronic density (chemical pressure) and hybridization V (pressure). It is found that close to the region where the system exhibits magnetic order the critical temperature T_c is much smaller than the Neel temperature, in qualitative agreement with some T_N/T_c ratios found for some heavy-fermion materials. In our study, all the magnetic and superconducting physical behaviour of the system has its origin in the fluctuating boson fields implementing the infinite on-site Coulomb repulsion among the f-electrons.

Specific Heat of the Periodic Anderson Model: From Weak to Strong Coupling

We study the temperature dependence of the specific heat in the periodic Anderson model as function of the on-site Coulomb interaction, hybridization, and position of the f-electrons energy level. At strong coupling (U=infinity) we use slave bosons, whereas at weak coupling we use a simple Hartree-Fock decomposition. We find that both in the strong and weak coupling limits the specific heat of the system presents a multiple peak structure in a mean field treatment. We believe these features to be related to band-shape effects. The temperature evolution of the low-temperature peak position on the model parameters for the non-half filled non-symmetric case is discussed.

Local Moment Formation in the Periodic Anderson Model with Superconducting Correlations

We study local moment formation in the presence of superconducting correlations among the f-electrons in the periodic Anderson model. Local moments form if the Coulomb interaction U>U_cr. We find that U_cr is considerably stronger in the presence of superconducting correlations than in the non-superconducting system. Our study is done for various values of the f-level energy and electronic density. The smallest critical U_cr values occur for the case where the number of f- electrons per site is equal to one. In the presence of d-wave superconducting correlations we find that local moment formation presents a quantum phase transition as function of pressure. This quantum phase transition separates a region where local moments and d-wave superconductivity coexist from another region characterized by a superconducting ground state with no local moments. We discuss the possible relevance of these results to experimental studies of the competition between magnetic order and superconductivity in CeCu_2Si_2.

Superconductivity in the SU(N) Anderson Lattice at U=\infty

We present a mean-field study of superconductivity in a generalized N-channel cubic Anderson lattice at U=\infty taking into account the effect of a nearest-neighbor attraction J. The condition U=\infty is implemented within the slave-boson formalism considering the slave bosons to be condensed. We consider the $f$-level occupancy ranging from the mixed valence regime to the Kondo limit and study the dependence of the critical temperature on the various model parameters for each of three possible Cooper pairing symmetries (extended s, d-wave and p-wave pairing) and find interesting crossovers. It is found that the d- and p- wave order parameters have, in general, very similar critical temperatures. The extended s-wave pairing seems to be relatively more stable for electronic densities per channel close to one and for large values of the superconducting interaction J.

Cooper pair delocalization in disordered media

We discuss the effect of disorder on the coherent propagation of the bound state of two attracting particles. It is shown that a result analogous to the Anderson theorem for dirty superconductors is also valid for the Cooper problem, namely, that the pair wave function is extended beyond the single-particle localization length if the latter is large. A physical justification is given in terms of the Thouless block-scaling picture of localization. These arguments are supplemented by numerical simulations. With increasing disorder we find a transition from a regime in which the interaction delocalizes the pair to a regime in which the interaction enhances localization.
