The Einstein-Boltzmann Relation for Thermodynamic and Hydrodynamic Fluctuations

When making the connection between the thermodynamics of irreversible processes and the theory of stochastic processes through the fluctuation-dissipation theorem, it is necessary to invoke a postulate of the Einstein-Boltzmann type. For convective processes hydrodynamic fluctuations must be included, the velocity is a dynamical variable and although the entropy cannot depend directly on the velocity, $δ^{2} S$ will depend on velocity variations. Some authors do not include velocity variations in $δ^{2} S$, and so have to introduce a non-thermodynamic function which replaces the entropy and does depend on the velocity. At first sight, it seems that the introduction of such a function requires a generalisation of the Einstein-Boltzmann relation to be invoked. We review the reason why it is not necessary to introduce such a function, and therefore why there is no need to generalise the Einstein-Boltzmann relation in this way. We then obtain the fluctuation-dissipation theorem which shows some differences as compared with the non-convective case. We also show that $δ^{2} S$ is a Liapunov function when it includes velocity fluctuations.

Fluctuation-dissipation theorems for viscoelastic fluids: consistency of extended thermodynamic theories

Fluctuation-Dissipation Relations (FDR) for a Maxwell fluid are computed via the GENERIC formalism. This formalism is determined by four building blocks, two ``potentials'' (total energy and entropy) and two ``matrices'' which determine the dynamics, but the understanding of fluctuations in a given non-equilibrium system is reduced to determining a single friction matrix. The FDR exhibits interesting features, arising from the type of entropy used in the formalism. We show explicitly this dependence FDR-Entropy, also we show that GENERIC renders results consistent with irreversible linear thermodynamics (TIL) \emph{only} if it is used the corresponding entropy. An inconsistent result is provided by GENERIC when it is used a modified entropy .

Interaction potential between dynamic dipoles: polarized excitons in strong magnetic fields

The interaction potential of a two-dimensional system of excitons with spatially separated electron-hole layers is considered in the strong magnetic field limit. The excitons are assumed to have free dynamics in the $x$-$y$ plane, while being constrained or `polarized' in the $z$ direction. The model simulates semiconductor double layer systems under strong magnetic field normal to the layers. The {\em residual} interaction between excitons exhibits interesting features, arising from the coupling of the center-of-mass and internal degrees of freedom of the exciton in the magnetic field. This coupling induces a dynamical dipole moment proportional to the center-of-mass magnetic moment of the exciton. We show the explicit dependence of the inter-exciton potential matrix elements, and discuss the underlying physics. The unusual features of the interaction potential would be reflected in the collective response and non-equilibrium properties of such system.
