Two-body $Z'$ decays in the minimal 331 model

The two-body decays of the extra neutral boson Z_2 predicted by the minimal 331 model are analyzed. At the three-level it can decay into standard model particles as well as exotic quarks and the new gauge bosons predicted by the model. The decays into a lepton pair are strongly suppressed, with $Br(Z_2 --> l^+l^-) ~ 10^{-2}$ and $Br(Z_2 --> \barν_l ν) ~ 10^{-3}$. In the bosonic sector, Z_2 would decay mainly into a pair of bilepton gauge bosons, with a branching ratio below the 0.1 level. The Z_2 boson has thus a leptophobic and bileptophobic nature and it would decay dominantly into quark pairs. The anomaly-induced decays $Z_2 --> Z_1γ$ and $Z_2 --> Z_1Z_1$, which occurs at the one-loop level are studied. It is found that $Br(Z_2 --> Z_1γ) ~ 10^{-9}$ and $Br(Z_2 --> Z_1Z_1) ~ 10^{-6}$ at most. As for the $Z_2 --> W^+W^-$ and $Z_2 --> Z_1H$ decays, with H a relatively light Higgs boson, they are induced via Z'-Z mixing. It is obtained that $Br(Z_2 --> W^+W^-) ~ 10^{-2}$ and $Br (Z_2 --> Z_1H) ~ 10^{-5}$. We also examine the flavor changing neutral current decays $Z_2 --> tc$ and $Z_2 --> tu$, which may have branching fractions as large as $10^{-3}$ and $10^{-5}$, respectively, and thus may be of phenomenological interest.

New physics effects in rare Z decays

Virtual effects induced by new physics in rare Z decays are reviewed. Since the expected sensitivity of the giga-Z linear collider is of the order of $10^{-8}$, we emphasize the importance of any new physics effect that gives a prediction above this limit. It is also pointed out that an improvement on the known experimental constraints on rare Z decays will provide us with a critical test of the validity of the standard model at the loop level.

Rare decay Z --> neutrino antineutrino photon photon via quartic gauge boson couplings

We present a detailed calculation of the rare decay Z --> neutrino antineutrino photon photon via the quartic neutral gauge boson coupling Z-Z-photon-photon in the framework of the effective Lagrangian approach. The current experimental bound on this decay mode is then used to constrain the coefficients of this coupling. It is found that the bounds obtained in this way, of the order of $10^{-1}$, are weaker than the ones obtained from the analysis of triple-boson production at LEP-2

Constraints on neutrino-photon interactions from rare Z decays

It is shown that the rare decays $Z \to ν\bar{nu} γ$ and $Z \to ν\barν γγ$ are useful to put model-independent bounds on neutrino-one-photon and neutrino-two-photon interactions. The results are then used to constrain the $τ$ neutrino magnetic moment and the double radiative decay $ν_j \to ν_i γγ$. It is found that the decay $Z \to ν\bar{nu} γ$ gives a more stringent bound on the $τ$ neutrino magnetic moment than that obtained from $Z \to ν\barν γγ$; the latter decay in turn gives limits on the neutrino-two-photon interaction that are less stringent than those obtained for a sterile neutrino $ν_s$ from the analysis of $ν_μN \to ν_s N$ conversion.

Capture Velocity for a Magneto-Optical Trap in a Broad Range of Light Intensity

In a recent paper, we have used the dark-spot Zeeman tuned slowing technique [Phys. Rev. A 62, 013404-1, (2000)] to measure the capture velocity as a function of laser intensity for a sodium magneto optical trap. Due to technical limitation we explored only the low light intensity regime, from 0 to 27 mW/cm^2. Now we complement that work measuring the capture velocity in a broader range of light intensities (from 0 to 400 mW/cm^2). New features, observed in this range, are important to understant the escape velocity behavior, which has been intensively used in the interpretation of cold collisions. In particular, we show in this brief report that the capture velocity has a maximum as function of the trap laser intensity, which would imply a minimum in the trap loss rates.

Trilinear Neutral Gauge Boson Couplings in Effective Theories

We list all the lowest dimension effective operators inducing off-shell trilinear neutral gauge boson couplings Z-Z-Photon, Z-Photon-Photon, and ZZZ within the effective Lagrangian approach, both in the linear and nonlinear realizations of the SU(2)_{L} X U(1)_Y gauge symmetry. In the linear scenario we find that these couplings can be generated only by dimension eight operators necessarily including the Higgs boson field, whereas in the nonlinear case they are induced by dimension six operators. We consider the impact of these couplings on some precision measurements such as the magnetic and electric dipole moments of fermions, as well as the Z boson rare decay Z -> neutrino+antineutrino+ photon. If the underlying new physics is of a decoupling nature, it is not expected that trilinear neutral gauge boson couplings may affect considerably any of these observables. On the contrary, it is just in the nonlinear scenario where these couplings have the more promising prospects of being perceptible through high precision experiments.

Testing flavor-changing neutral currents in the rare decays t->cViVj

We discuss the Flavor-Changing Neutral Current (FCNC) decays of the top quark t -> c Vi Vj (Vi=gamma, Z, g) in the framework of the Standard Model (SM) and in a two-higgs doublet model (2HDM) with tree-level FCNC couplings. While in the SM the expected branching ratios are extremelly small, in the 2HDM they may be sizable, of order 10^(-5) - 10^(-5), and thus accesible at the CERN LHC. We conclude with the interesting observation that the FCNC decay modes may not be equally suppressed as their corresponding decays t ->c Vi in this 2HDM.

Analysis of tbW and ttZ couplings from CLEO and LEP/SLC data

We update the constraints on anomalous dimension four $\tbw$ and $\ttz$ couplings by using CLEO $b \ra s γ$ and LEP/SLC precision $Z$-pole data. It is found that the data imposes very stringent bounds on them. Moreover, the $2 σ$ pull from SM predictions of $A_{LR}$(hadrons), $A_b$ and $A_{FB}$(b) have little chance of being explained by the strongly constrained anomalous couplings.

The decay Z -> neutrino antineutrino photon in the Standard Model

A complete study of the one-loop induced decay Z -> neutrino antineutrino photon is presented within the framework of the Standard Model. The advantages of using a nonlinear gauge are stressed. We have found that the main contributions come from the electric dipole and the magnetic dipole transitions of the Z gauge boson and the neutrino, respectively. We obtain a branching ratio B=7.16E-10, which is about four orders of magnitude smaller than the bound recentely obtained by the L3 collaboration and thus it leaves open a window to search for new physics effects in single-photon decays of the Z boson.

A Direct Constraint on Dimension-Eight Operators from Z-->neutrino antinetrino gamma

We study the radiative decay Z-->neutrino antineutrino gamma whitin an effective Lagrangian approach. Using the search for energetic single-photon events in the data collected by the L3 collaboration, we get direct bounds on the dimension-six and the dimension-eight operators associated with the tau-neutrino magnetic moment and the anomalous electromagnetic properties of the Z boson. As a by-product of our calculation, we reproduce the L3 result for the bound on the tau-neutrino magnetic moment.

Tests of Higgs and Top Effective Interactions

We study the possibility to detect heavy physics effects in the interactions of Higgs bosons and the top quark at future colliders using the effective Lagrangian approach. The modification of the interactions may enhance the production of Higgs bosons at hadron colliders through the mechanisms of gluon fusion and associated production with a W boson or $t\bar{t}$ pairs. The most promising signature is through the decay of the Higgs boson into two photons, whose branching ratio is also enhanced in this approach. As a consequence of our analysis we get a bound on the chromomagnetic dipole moment of the top quark.

Two Photon Processes and Effective Lagrangians with An Extended Scalar Sector

We consider the Standard Model with an extended scalar sector, and study the possible effects of the physics underlying such a model using an effective lagrangian parametrization. It is found that certain two photon processes offer windows where such heavy interactions might be glimpsed, but the realization of this expectation requires enormous experimental precision.

Is there any Scaling in the Cluster Distribution ?

We apply fractal analysis methods to investigate the scaling properties in the Abell and ACO catalogs of rich galaxy clusters. We also discuss different technical aspects of the method when applied to data sets with small number of points as the cluster catalogs. Results are compared with simulations based on the Zel'dovich approximation. We limit our analysis to scales less than 100 $\hm$. The cluster distribution show a scale invariant multifractal behavior in a limited scale range. For the Abell catalog this range is 15--60$\hm$, while for the ACO sample it extends to smaller scales. Despite this difference in the extension of the scale--range where scale--invariant clustering takes place, both samples are characterized by remarkably similar multifractal spectra in the corresponding scaling regime. In particular, the correlation dimension turns out to be $D_2\simeq 2.2$ for both Abell and ACO clusters. Although it is difficult to point out the scale at which homogeneity is reached with the present size of these redshift surveys, our results indicate that the cluster distribution shows a tendency to homogeneity at large scales, disproving the picture of a pure scale invariant fractal structure extending to arbitrarily large distances.
