Properties of Galactic B[e] Supergiants: V. 3 Pup -- constraining the orbital parameters and modeling the circumstellar environments

We report the results of a long-term spectroscopic monitoring of the A-type supergiant with the B[e] phenomenon 3 Pup = HD 62623. We confirm earlier findings that it is a binary system. The orbital parameters were derived using cross-correlation of the spectra in a range of 4460-4632 A, which contains over 30 absorption lines. The orbit was found circular with a period of $137.4\pm0.1$ days, radial velocity semi-amplitude $K_{1} = 5.0\pm0.8$ km s$^{-1}$, systemic radial velocity $γ= +26.4\pm2.0$ km s$^{-1}$, and the mass function $f(m) = (1.81^{+0.97}_{-0.76})\times10^{-3}$ M$_{\odot}$. The object may have evolved from a pair with initial masses of $\sim$6.0 M$_{\odot}$ and $\sim$3.6 M$_{\odot}$ with an initial orbital period of $\sim$5 days. Based on the fundamental parameters of the A-supergiant (luminosity $\log$ L/L$_{\odot} = 4.1\pm$0.1 and effective temperature T$_{\rm eff} = 8500\pm$500 K) and evolutionary tracks of mass-transferring binaries, we found current masses of the gainer M$_{2} = 8.8\pm$0.5 M$_{\odot}$ and donor M$_{1} = 0.75\pm0.25$ M$_{\odot}$. We also modeled the object's IR-excess and derived a dust mass of $\sim 5\,\times10^{-5}$ M$_{\odot}$ in the optically-thin dusty disk. The orbital parameters and properties of the H$α$ line profile suggest that the circumstellar gaseous disk is predominantly circumbinary. The relatively low mass of the gainer led us to a suggestion that 3 Pup should be excluded from the B[e] supergiant group and moved to the FS CMa group. Overall these results further support our original suggestion that FS CMa objects are binary systems, where an earlier mass-transfer caused formation of the circumstellar envelope.

The two magnetic components in the Herbig Ae SB2 system HD 104237

We present longitudinal magnetic field measurements $\langle B_z \rangle$ for the Herbig Ae primary and the T Tauri secondary in the SB2 system HD 104237. These measurements were carried out using high spectral resolution observations obtained with the High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher in polarimetric mode, installed at the ESO La Silla 3.6 m telescope. In agreement with previous studies of Herbig Ae stars, the longitudinal magnetic field in the primary is rather weak, ranging from 47 G to 72 G. The secondary component possesses a variable, much stronger magnetic field, up to 600 G, as expected for a magnetically active T Tauri star. We estimated the rotation period of the primary, $P_{\mathrm{rot}}=4.33717\pm0.00316$ d ($=104\pm0.08$ h), from metal line equivalent width variations.

Observations of magnetic fields in Herbig Ae/Be stars

Models of magnetically driven accretion reproduce many observational properties of T Tauri stars. For the more massive Herbig Ae/Be stars, the corresponding picture has been questioned lately, in part driven by the fact that their magnetic fields are typically one order of magnitude weaker. Indeed, the search for magnetic fields in Herbig Ae/Be stars has been quite time consuming, with a detection rate of about 7%, also limited by the current potential to detect weak magnetic fields. Over the last two decades, magnetic fields were found in about twenty objects and for only two Herbig Ae/Be stars was the magnetic field geometry constrained. Further, studies were undertaken to investigate the time dependence of spectroscopic tracers of magnetospheric accretion. Overall, it seems that while there is proof that magneospheric accretion is present in some Herbig Ae stars, there is less evidence for the Herbig Be stars.

Weak Magnetic Fields in Two Herbig Ae Systems: The SB2 AK Sco and the Presumed Binary HD 95881

We report the detection of weak mean longitudinal magnetic fields in the Herbig Ae double-lined spectroscopic binary AK Sco and in the presumed spectroscopic Herbig Ae binary HD95881 using observations with the High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher polarimeter (HARPSpol) attached to the European Southern Observatory's (ESO's) 3.6m telescope. Employing a multi-line singular value decomposition (SVD) method, we detect a mean longitudinal magnetic field =-83+-31G in the secondary component of AK Sco on one occasion. For HD95881, we measure =-93+-25G and =105+-29G at two different observing epochs. For all the detections the false alarm probability is smaller than 10^-5. For AK Sco system, we discover that accretion diagnostic Na I doublet lines and photospheric lines show intensity variations over the observing nights. The double-lined spectral appearance of HD95881 is presented here for the first time.

Spectroscopic signatures of magnetospheric accretion in Herbig Ae/Be stars. I. The case of HD101412

Models of magnetically-driven accretion and outflows reproduce many observational properties of T Tauri stars. This concept is not well established for the more massive Herbig Ae/Be stars. We intend to examine the magnetospheric accretion in Herbig Ae/Be stars and search for rotational modulation using spectroscopic signatures, in this first paper concentrating on the well-studied Herbig Ae star HD101412. We used near-infrared spectroscopic observations of the magnetic Herbig Ae star HD101412 to test the magnetospheric character of its accretion disk/star interaction. We reduced and analyzed 30 spectra of HD101412, acquired with the CRIRES and X-shooter spectrographs installed at the VLT (ESO, Chile). The spectroscopic analysis was based on the He I lambda 10,830 and Pa gamma lines, formed in the accretion region. We found that the temporal behavior of these diagnostic lines in the near-infrared spectra of HD101412 can be explained by rotational modulation of line profiles generated by accreting gas with a period P = 20.53+-1.68 d. The discovery of this period, about half of the magnetic rotation period P_m = 42.076 d previously determined from measurements of the mean longitudinal magnetic field, indicates that the accreted matter falls onto the star in regions close to the magnetic poles intersecting the line-of-sight two times during the rotation cycle. We intend to apply this method to a larger sample of Herbig Ae/Be stars.

Probing the Structure of the Accretion Region in a Sample of Magnetic Herbig Ae/Be Stars

We present the results of a study of the temporal behaviour of several diagnostic lines formed in the region of the accretion-disk/star interaction in the three magnetic Herbig Ae stars HD101412, HD104237, and HD190073. More than 100 spectra acquired with the ISAAC, X-shooter, and CRIRES spectrographs installed at the VLT-8m telescope (ESO, Chile), as well as at other observatories (OHP, Crimean AO) were analyzed. The spectroscopic data were obtained in the He I lambda10830, Pa gamma and He I lambda5876 lines. We found that the temporal behaviour of the diagnostic lines in the spectra of all program stars can be widely explained by a rotational modulation of the line profiles generated by a local accretion flow. This result is in good agreement with the predictions of the magnetospheric accretion model. For the first time, the rotation period of HD104237 (P_rot = 5.37+-0.03 days), as well as the inclination angle (i = 21+-4deg) were determined. Additional analysis of the HARPSpol spectra of HD104237 and HD190073, taken from the ESO archive, with the use of the SVD method shows that the magnetic field structure of HD190073 is likely more complex than a simple dipole and contains a circumstellar component. For the first time, the magnetic field of the secondary component of the binary system HD104237 was also detected ( = 128+-10G).

Measuring the mass accretion rates of Herbig Ae/Be stars with X-shooter

We present the results of our observations of eight magnetic Herbig Ae/Be stars obtained with the X-shooter spectrograph mounted on UT2 at the VLT. X-shooter provides a simultaneous, medium-resolution and high-sensitivity spectrum over the entire wavelength range from 300 to 2500 nm. We estimate the mass accretion rates M_acc of the targets from 13 different spectral diagnostics using empiric calibrations derived previously for T Tauri-type stars and brown dwarfs. We have estimated the mass accretion rates of our targets, which range from 2x10^-9 to 2x10^-7 M_sun/yr. Furthermore, we have found accretion rate variability with amplitudes of 0.10-0.40 dex taking place on time scales from one day to tens of days. Additional future night-to-night observations need to be carried out to investigate the character of M_acc variability in details. Our study shows that the majority of the calibrational relations can be applied to Herbig Ae/Be stars, but several of them need to be re-calibrated on the basis of new spectral data for a larger number of Herbig Ae/Be stars.

Characterising the magnetic fields of the Herbig Ae/Be stars HD97048, HD150193, HD176386, and MWC480

Our knowledge of the presence and the role of magnetic fields in intermediate-mass pre-main-sequence stars remains very poor. We present the magnetic properties of four Herbig Ae/Be stars that have not been previously studied in detail. Our results for the three Herbig Ae/Be stars HD97048, HD150193, and HD176386 are based on multi-epoch low-resolution spectra obtained in spectropolarimetric mode with FORS2 mounted on the VLT. New high-resolution polarimetric spectra were obtained for MWC480 with the SOFIN spectrograph installed at the Nordic Optical Telescope. We discuss 41 FORS2 low-resolution observations of the Herbig Ae/Be stars HD97048, HD150193, and HD176386 and determine their rotational periods. Using stellar fundamental parameters and the longitudinal magnetic field phase curves, we place constraints on the magnetic field geometry. Three high-resolution circularly polarised SOFIN spectra obtained for MWC480 were measured using the moment technique where wavelength shifts between right- and left-hand side circularly polarised spectra are interpreted in terms of a longitudinal magnetic field . Our search for periodicities resulted in P=0.693d for HD97048, P=1.317d for HD150193, and P=0.899d for HD176386. The magnetic field geometry can likely be described by a centred dipole with a polar magnetic field strength B_d of several hundred Gauss. The longitudinal magnetic-field measurements of MWC480 reveal the presence of a strong kG field, which was undetected in our previous low-resolution polarimetric observations with FORS1. A weak magnetic field was detected in the circumstellar components of the Ca II H&K lines and the Na I D lines, indicating a complex interaction between the stellar magnetic field and the circumstellar environment.

Rotationally modulated variations and the mean longitudinal magnetic field of the Herbig Ae star HD 101412

Despite of the importance of magnetic fields for the full understanding of the properties of accreting Herbig Ae/Be stars, these fields have scarcely been studied over the rotation cycle until now. One reason for the paucity of such observations is the lack of knowledge of their rotation periods. The sharp-lined young Herbig Ae star HD101412 with a strong surface magnetic field became in the last years one of the most studied targets among the Herbig Ae/Be stars. A few months ago we obtained multi-epoch polarimetric spectra of this star with FORS2 to search for a rotation period and to constrain the geometry of the magnetic field. We measured longitudinal magnetic fields on 13 different epochs distributed over 62 days. These new measurements together with our previous measurements of the magnetic field in this star were combined with available photometric observations to determine the rotation period. The search of the rotation period resulted in P=42.076+-0.01d. According to near-infrared imaging studies the star is observed nearly edge-on. The star exhibits a single-wave variation of the longitudinal magnetic field during the stellar rotation cycle. These observations are usually considered as evidence for a dominant dipolar contribution to the magnetic field topology.

Magnetic Field Measurement in Black Hole X-Ray Binary Cygnus X-1

X-ray binary Cygnus X-1 is microquasar containing historically first candidate to black hole. Paradigm of magnetic disc accretion dominates in theoretical models describing processes taking place in objects containing black holes such as microquasars and active galactic nuclei. Nevertheless up to now there were no reliable measurements of magnetic fields in these systems. The first prediction of the Cyg X-1 magnetic field was done by V.F.Shvartsman. He wrote that Cyg X-1 X-ray emission millisecond flickering evidences the presence of a black hole and points to the magnetic field role in accretion onto a black hole. From that times there were many of attempts to search for the Cyg X-1 magnetic field but all of these efforts indicated upper limits only. Our VLT FORS1 2007 and 2008 observations revealed a presence of a magnetic field in the system. For the first time we obtained on the level of 6 standard deviations a magnetic field of the order of 130 G on the surface of the Cyg X-1 optical component (O-supergiant) and observational estimation on a 4 sigma level of a magnetic field on a outer part of accretion structure (about 600 G) in accordance with theoretical prediction. Scaling this field value to black hole vicinity we showed that the field is strong enough to explain the X-ray millisecond flickering and can explain it. Our result presents the first direct determination of magnetic field in accreting disk around a black hole.

Magnetic survey of emission line B-type stars with FORS1 at the VLT

We report the results of our search for magnetic fields in a sample of 16 field Be stars, the binary emission-line B-type star upsilon Sgr, and in a sample of fourteen members of the open young cluster NGC3766 in the Carina spiral arm. The sample of cluster members includes Be stars, normal B-type stars and He-strong/He-weak stars. Nine Be stars have been studied with magnetic field time series obtained over ~1 hour to get an insight into the temporal behaviour and the correlation of magnetic field properties with dynamical phenomena taking place in Be star atmospheres. The spectropolarimetric data were obtained at the European Southern Observatory with the multi-mode instrument FORS1 installed at the 8m Kueyen telescope. We detect weak photospheric magnetic fields in four field Be stars, HD62367, mu Cen, o Aqr, and epsilon Tuc. The strongest longitudinal magnetic field, =117+-38G, was detected in the Be star HD62367. Among the Be stars studied with time series, one Be star, lambda Eri, displays cyclic variability of the magnetic field with a period of 21.12min. The binary star upsilon Sgr, in the initial rapid phase of mass exchange between the two components with strong emission lines in the visible spectrum, is a magnetic variable star, probably on a timescale of a few months. The maximum longitudinal magnetic field =-102+-10G at MJD54333.018 was measured using hydrogen lines. The cluster NGC3766 seems to be extremely interesting, where we find evidence for the presence of a magnetic field in seven early B-type stars out of the observed fourteen cluster members.

Searching for a link between the magnetic nature and other observed properties of Herbig Ae/Be stars and stars with debris disks

Among the 21 Herbig Ae/Be stars studied, new detections of a magnetic field were achieved in six stars. For three Herbig Ae/Be stars, we confirm previous magnetic field detections. The largest longitudinal magnetic field, = -454+-42G, was detected in the Herbig Ae/Be star HD101412 using hydrogen lines. No field detection at a significance level of 3sigma was achieved in stars with debris disks. Our study does not indicate any correlation of the strength of the longitudinal magnetic field with disk orientation, disk geometry, or the presence of a companion. We also do not see any simple dependence on the mass-accretion rate. However, it is likely that the range of observed field values qualitatively supports the expectations from magnetospheric accretion models giving support for dipole-like field geometries. Both the magnetic field strength and the X-ray emission show hints for a decline with age in the range of ~2-14Myrs probed by our sample supporting a dynamo mechanism that decays with age. However, our study of rotation does not show any obvious trend of the strength of the longitudinal magnetic field with rotation period. Furthermore, the stars seem to obey the universal power-law relation between magnetic flux and X-ray luminosity established for the Sun and main-sequence active dwarf stars.

A study of the magnetic field in the photospheric and circumstellar components of Herbig Ae stars

We intend to investigate separately the photospheric and circumstellar (CS) magnetic field components in seven Herbig Ae stars. The study is based on low-resolution (R ~ 2000 and 4000) spectropolarimetric data collected from 2003 to 2005 at the Very Large Telescope (ESO, Chile) with the multi-mode instrument FORS1. We show that the spectropolarimetric results strongly depend on the level of CS contribution to the stellar spectra. We have improved the determination accuracy of magnetic fields up to the 7 sigma level in the two Herbig Ae stars HD139614 and HD144432, observed in 2005 when these objects were at a low level state of their CS activity. We have established that at a higher level state of CS activity the polarisation signatures are related mainly to the CS matter. The presence of CS polarisation signatures formed in the stellar wind supports the assumption that the magnetic centrifuge is a principal mechanism of wind acceleration. We conclude that the most effective way to investigate the magnetism of Herbig Ae stars is to monitor their spectropolarimetric behaviour at different states of CS activity. Obviously, higher resolution spectropolarimetric observations would extend the sample of spectral lines to be used for the measurements of magnetic fields at different levels in the stellar atmosphere and CS envelope. Such observations will give a more complete insight into the magnetic topology in Herbig Ae stars.

Accurate magnetic field measurements of Vega-like stars and Herbig Ae/Be stars

We have obtained accurate circular spectropolarimetric observations for a sample of Vega-like and Herbig Ae/Be stars with FORS1 at the VLT in an attempt to detect their magnetic fields. No magnetic field could be diagnosed in any Vega-like star. The most accurate determination of a magnetic field, at 2.6 sigma level, has been performed for the Vega-like star iota Cen for which we have measured = -77+-30 G. In the prototype of Vega-like stars, the star beta Pictoris, which shows conspicuous signs of chromospheric activity, a longitudinal magnetic field is measured only at ~1.5 sigma level. We diagnose for the first time a longitudinal magnetic field at a level larger than 3 sigma for the two Herbig Ae stars HD31648 and HD144432 and we confirm the previous detection of a magnetic field in a third Herbig Ae star, HD139614. Finally, we discuss the discovery of distinctive Zeeman features in the unusual Herbig Ae star HD190073 where the Ca II doublet displays several components in both H and K lines. From the measurement of circular polarization in all Balmer lines from H_beta to H_8 we obtain = +26+-34 G. However, using for the measurement of circular polarization only the Ca II H and K lines, we are able to diagnose a longitudinal magnetic field at 2.8 sigma level, = +84+-30 G.

The polarization effects of radiation from magnetized envelopes and extended accretion structures

The results of numerical calculations of linear polarization from magnetized spherical optically thick and optically thin envelopes are presented. We give the methods how to distinguish magnetized optically thin envelopes from optically thick ones using observed spectral distributions of the polarization degree and the positional angle. The results of numerical calculations are used for analysis of polarimetric observations of OB and WR stars, X-ray binaries with black hole candidates (Cyg X-1, SS 433) and supernovae. The developed method allows to estimate magnetic field strength for the objects mentioned above.
