Lorentz violation footprints in the spectrum of high-energy cosmic neutrinos: Deformation of the spectrum of superluminal neutrinos from electron-positron pair production in vacuum

The observation of cosmic neutrinos up to 2 PeV is used to put bounds on the energy scale of Lorentz invariance violation through the loss of energy due to the production of $e^+e^-$ pairs in the propagation of superluminal neutrinos. A model to study this effect, which allows to understand qualitatively the results of numerical simulations, is presented.

A measurement of the ionization efficiency of nuclear recoils in silicon

We have measured the ionization efficiency of silicon nuclear recoils with kinetic energy between 1.8 and 20 keV. We bombarded a silicon-drift diode with a neutron beam to perform an elastic-scattering experiment. A broad-energy neutron spectrum was used and the nuclear recoil energy was reconstructed using a measurement of the time of flight and scattering angle of the scattered neutron. The overall trend of the results of this work is well described by the theory of Lindhard et al. above 4 keV of recoil energy. Below this energy, the presented data shows a deviation from the model. The data indicates a faster drop than the theory prediction at low energies.

Nongauge bright soliton of the nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation and a family of generalized NLS equations

We present an approach to the bright soliton solution of the NLS equation from the standpoint of introducing a constant potential term in the equation. We discuss a `nongauge' bright soliton for which both the envelope and the phase depend only on the traveling variable. We also construct a family of generalized NLS equations with solitonic sech^p solutions in the traveling variable and find an exact equivalence with other nonlinear equations, such as the Korteveg-de Vries and Benjamin-Bona-Mahony equations when p=2

An alternative factorization of the quantum harmonic oscillator and two-parameter family of self-adjoint operators

We introduce an alternative factorization of the Hamiltonian of the quantum harmonic oscillator which leads to a two-parameter self-adjoint operator from which the standard harmonic oscillator, the one-parameter oscillators introduced by Mielnik, and the Hermite operator are obtained in certain limits of the parameters. In addition, a single Bernoulli-type parameter factorization which is different of the one introduced by M. A. Reyes, H. C. Rosu, and M. R. Gutierrez, Phys. Lett. A 375 (2011) 2145 is briefly discussed in the final part of this work

A note on the FKPP equation approached with the hyperbolic scaling

We consider the hyperbolic scaling of the FKPP equation and introduce two solutions of the action functional type in the limit of zero hyperbolic parameter. Furthermore, we show that the action functional of the Ablowitz-Zepetella kink is a special case of one of those solutions

A note on Verhulst's logistic equation and related logistic maps

We consider the Verhulst logistic equation and a couple of forms of the corresponding logistic maps. For the case of the logistic equation we show that using the general Riccati solution only changes the initial conditions of the equation. Next, we consider two forms of corresponding logistic maps reporting the following results. For the map x_{n+1} = rx_n(1 - x_n) we propose a new way to write the solution for r = -2 which allows better precision of the iterative terms, while for the map x_{n+1}-x_n = rx_n(1 - x_{n+1}) we show that it behaves identically to the logistic equation from the standpoint of the general Riccati solution, which is also provided herein for any value of the parameter r.

The Schrodinger picture of standard cosmology

We consider a time independent Schrodinger type equation derived from the equations of motion that drives a single scalar field in a standard cosmology model for inflation in a flat space-time with a Friedman-Robertson-Walker (FRW) metric with a cosmological constant. We find that all the 1-dimensional bound state solutions of quantum mechanics lead to at least one exact solution for the dynamical equations of standard cosmology, and that these solutions resemble the most recurrent inflationary solutions found in the literature. The analogies derived from this approach may be used to realize a deeper understanding of the dynamics of the model.

The analysis of predictability of alpha-decay half-life formulae and the alpha partial half-lives of some exotic nuclei

The predictabilities of the three alpha-decay half-life formulae, the Royer GLDM, the Viola-Seaborg and the Sobiczewski-Parkhomenko formulae, have been evaluated by developing a method based on the ansatz of standard experimental benchmarking. The coefficients of each formula were re-derived using the reliable data of the alpha-standards nuclei. The modified formulae that resulted were used to evaluate the accuracies of the formulae towards the prediction of half-lives of a set of nuclides with well-studied alpha- spectroscopic data as well as a set of exotic alpha-emitters. Further, a simple linear optimization of the modified formulae allowed adjustments for the insufficient statistics of the primary data set without changing the modified formulae. While the three modified formulae showed equivalent results for all the medium heavy nuclei except the odd-odd, the modified GLDM showed relatively the best figures of merit for the odd-odd and superheavy nuclides.

Riccati-parameter solutions of nonlinear second-order ODEs

It has been proven by Rosu and Cornejo-Perez in 2005 that for some nonlinear second-order ODEs it is a very simple task to find one particular solution once the nonlinear equation is factorized with the use of two first-order differential operators. Here, it is shown that an interesting class of parametric solutions is easy to obtain if the proposed factorization has a particular form, which happily turns out to be the case in many problems of physical interest. The method that we exemplify with a few explicitly solved cases consists in using the general solution of the Riccati equation, which contributes with one parameter to this class of parametric solutions. For these nonlinear cases, the Riccati parameter serves as a `growth' parameter from the trivial null solution up to the particular solution found through the factorization procedure

Mass gap for gravity localized on Weyl thick branes

We study the properties of a previously found family of thick brane configurations in a pure geometric Weyl integrable 5D space time, a non-Riemannian generalization of Kaluza-Klein (KK) theory involving a geometric scalar field. Thus the 5D theory describes gravity coupled to a self-interacting scalar field which gives rise to the structure of the thick branes. Analyzing the graviton spectrum for this class of models, we find that a particularly interesting situation arises for a special case in which the 4D graviton is separated from the KK gravitons by a mass gap. The corresponding effective Schroedinger equation has a modified Poeschl-Teller potential and can be solved exactly. Apart from the massless 4D graviton, it contains one massive KK bound state, and the continuum spectrum of delocalized KK modes. We discuss the mass hierarchy problem, and explicitly compute the corrections to Newton's law in the thin brane limit.

Stationary Oscillations in a Damped Wave Equation from Isospectral Bessel Functions

Using the isospectral partners of the Bessel functions derived by Reyes et al., we find, on one hand, that these functions show non-typical supersymmetric (SUSY) behavior and, on the other, that the isospectral partner of the classical wave equation is equivalent to that of a damped system whose oscillations do not vanish in time, but show a non-harmonic shape.

Search for Exotic Baryons in 800 GeV pp (rtarrow) pXiPiX

We report the results of a high-statistics, sensitive search for narrow baryon resonances decaying to $Ξ^-π^-$, $Ξ^-π^+$, $\barΞ^+π^-$, and $\barΞ^+π^+$. The only resonances observed are the well known $Ξ^0(1530)$ and $\bar{Ξ^0}(1530)$. No evidence is found for a state near 1862 MeV, previously reported by NA49\cite{NA49}. At the 95% confidence level, we find the upper limit for the production of a Gaussian enhancement with $σ=7.6$ MeV in the $Ξ^-π^-$ effective mass spectrum to be 0.3% of the number of observed $Ξ^0(1530)\toΞ^-π^+$. We find similarly restrictive upper limits for an enhancement at 1862 MeV in the $Ξ^-π^+$, $\barΞ^+π^-$, and $\barΞ^+π^+$ mass spectra.

Three-step master equation: class of parametric stationary solutions

We examine the three-step master equation from the standpoint of the general solution of the associated discrete Riccati equation. We report by this means stationary master solutions depending on a free constant parameter, denoted by D, that should be negative in order to assure the positivity of the solution. These solutions correspond to different discrete Markov processes characterized by the value of D, which is related to specific renormalizations of the transition rates of the chain of states

Factorization approach for barotropic FRW model with a cosmological constant

We apply the technique of standard supersymmetric factorization for any q factor ordering in the Wheeler-DeWitt (WDW) equation for barotropic Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) minisuperspace model, including the cosmological term. The resulting wave functions of the universe are exhibited as one-parameter families, which for particular values of the $γ$ parameter of the barotropic model are exactly found.

Using a combination of the ladder operators of Pina [Rev. Mex. Fis. 41 (1995) 913] and the parametric operators of Mielnik [J. Math. Phys. 25 (1984) 3387] we introduce second order linear differential equations whose eigenfunctions are isospectral to the special functions of the mathematical physics and illustrate the method with several key examples

General solution of the three-site master equation and the discrete Riccati equation

We first obtain by analogy with the continuous (differential) case the general solution of a discrete Riccati equation. Our results can be considered the discrete analog of Mielnik's construction in supersymmetric quantum mechanics [J. Math. Phys. 25, 3387 (1984)]. Moreover, we establish the full equivalence between our discrete Riccati equation and a corresponding homogeneous second order discrete linear equation. We present an application to the three-site master equation obtaining explicitly the general solutions for the simple cases of free random walk and the biased random walk

Riccati parameter modes from Newtonian free damping motion by supersymmetry

We determine the class of damped modes \tilde{y} which are related to the common free damping modes y by supersymmetry. They are obtained by employing the factorization of Newton's differential equation of motion for the free damped oscillator by means of the general solution of the corresponding Riccati equation together with Witten's method of constructing the supersymmetric partner operator. This procedure leads to one-parameter families of (transient) modes for each of the three types of free damping, corresponding to a particular type of %time-dependent angular frequency. %time-dependent, antirestoring acceleration (adding up to the usual Hooke restoring acceleration) of the form a(t)=\frac{2γ^2}{(γt+1)^{2}}\tilde{y}, where γis the family parameter that has been chosen as the inverse of the Riccati integration constant. In supersymmetric terms, they represent all those one Riccati parameter damping modes having the same Newtonian free damping partner mode

Recurrence-shift relations for the polynomial functions of Aldaya, Bisquert, and Navarro-Salas

Using a simple factorization scheme we obtain the recurrence-shift relations of the polynomial functions of Aldaya, Bisquert and Navarro-Salas (ABNS), F_n^N(\fracωc\sqrtN x), i.e., one-step first-order differential relations referring to N, as follows. Firstly, we apply the scheme to the polynomial degree confirming the recurrence relations of Aldaya, Bisquert and Navarro-Salas, but also obtaining another slightly modified pair. Secondly, the factorization scheme is applied to the Gegenbauer polynomials to get the recurrence relations with respect to their parameter. Next, we make use of Nagel's result, showing the connection between Gegenbauer polynomials and the ABNS functions, to write down the recurrence-shift relations for the latter ones. Such relations may be used in the study of the spatial structure of pair-creation processes in an Anti-de Sitter gravitational background
