Preparation and Characterization of High Quality Bi1-xSbx Thin Films: A Sputtering Deposition Approach

The Bi1-xSbx was the first 3D topological insulator found in nature. It presents a complex electronic structure with topological to trivial transition and a semimetallic to semiconductor transition, both achieved by changing the x fraction of Sb. The complex nature of this system may lead to several electronic and topological phases in matter, making it a promising quantum material. Here, we focused on preparing very high-quality thin films samples of Bi1-xSbx with varying fraction of x using the Co-deposition Magnetron Sputtering technique. Our results demonstrate that high-quality samples, with compact and uniform morphology, presenting a preferential direction of growth, can be obtained over SiO2 substrate. Our findings suggest a dependence between the thin films crystalline texture and the composition of the samples, as well as the deposition temperature.

Enhancement of the Magnetocaloric Effect in Geometrically Frustrated Cluster Spin Glass Systems

In this work, we theoretically demonstrate that a strong enhancement of the Magnetocaloric Effect is achieved in geometrically frustrated cluster spin-glass systems just above the freezing temperature. We consider a network of clusters interacting randomly which have triangular structure composed of Ising spins interacting antiferromagnetically. The intercluster disorder problem is treated using a cluster spin glass mean-field theory, which allows exact solution of the disordered problem. The intracluster part can be solved using exact enumeration. The coupling between the inter and intracluster problem incorporates the interplay between effects coming from geometric frustration and disorder. As a result, it is shown that there is the onset of cluster spin glass phase even with very weak disorder. Remarkably, it is exactly within a range of very weak disorder and small magnetic field that is observed the strongest isothermal release of entropy.

Spin Transfer from a Ferromagnet into a Semiconductor through an Oxide barrier

We present results on the magnetoresistance of the system Ni/Al203/n-doped Si/Al2O3/Ni in fabricated nanostructures. The results at temperature of 14K reveal a 75% magnetoresistance that decreases in value up to approximately 30K where the effect disappears. We observe minimum resistance in the antiparallel configurations of the source and drain of Ni. As a possibility, it seems to indicate the existence of a magnetic state at the Si/oxide interface. The average spin diffusion length obtained is of 650 nm approximately. Results are compared to the window of resistances that seems to exist between the tunnel barrier resistance and two threshold resistances but the spin transfer seems to work in the range and outside the two thresholds.
