Scalar Field in Any Dimension from the Higher Spin Gauge Theory Perspective

We formulate the equations of motion of a free scalar field in the flat and $AdS$ space of an arbitrary dimension in the form of some "higher spin" covariant constancy conditions. Klein-Gordon equation is interpreted as a non-trivial cohomology of a certain "\sgm-complex". The action principle for a scalar field is formulated in terms of the "higher-spin" covariant derivatives for an arbitrary mass in $AdS_d$ and for a non-zero mass in the flat space. The constructed action is shown to be equivalent to the standard first-order Klein-Gordon action at the quadratic level but becomes different at the interaction level because of the presence of an infinite set of auxiliary fields which do not contribute at the free level. The example of Yang-Mills current interaction is considered in some detail. It is shown in particular how the proposed action generates the pseudolocally exact form of the matter currents in $AdS_d$.

Measurement of Differences Between J/Psi and Psi' Suppression in p-A Collisions

Measurements of the suppression of the yield per nucleon of J/Psi and Psi' production for 800 GeV/c protons incident on heavy relative to light nuclear targets have been made with very broad coverage in xF and pT. The observed suppression is smallest at xF values of 0.25 and below and increases at larger values of xF. It is also strongest at small pT. Substantial differences between the Psi' and J/Psi are observed for the first time in p-A collisions. The suppression for the Psi' is stronger than that for the J/Psi for xF near zero, but becomes comparable to that for the J/Psi for xF > 0.6.

Higher Spin Symmetries, Star-Product and Relativistic Equations in AdS Space

We discuss general properties of the theory of higher spin gauge fields in $AdS_4$ focusing on the relationship between the star-product origin of the higher spin symmetries, AdS geometry and the concept of space-time locality. A full list of conserved higher spin currents in the flat space of arbitrary dimension is presented.

Parton energy loss limits and shadowing in Drell-Yan dimuon production

A precise measurement of the ratios of the Drell-Yan cross section per nucleon for an 800 GeV/c proton beam incident on Be, Fe and W targets is reported. The behavior of the Drell-Yan ratios at small target parton momentum fraction is well described by an existing fit to the shadowing observed in deep-inelastic scattering. The cross section ratios as a function of the incident parton momentum fraction set tight limits on the energy loss of quarks passing through a cold nucleus.

Conformal Field Theory in Conformal Space

We present a new framework for a Lagrangian description of conformal field theories in various dimensions based on a local version of d+2-dimensional conformal space. The results include a true gauge theory of conformal gravity in d=(1,3) and any standard matter coupled to it. An important feature is the automatic derivation of the conformal gravity constraints, which are necessary for the analysis of the matter systems.

The Superalgebraic Approach to Supergravity

We formulate classical actions for N=1 supergravity in D=(1,3) as a gauge theory of OSp(1|4). One may choose the action such that it does not include a cosmological term.

dbar/ubar Asymmetry and the Origin of the Nucleon Sea

The Drell-Yan cross section ratios, $σ(p+d)/σ(p+p)$, measured in Fermilab E866, have led to the first determination of $\bar d(x) / \bar u(x)$, $\bar d(x) - \bar u(x)$, and the integral of $\bar d(x) - \bar u(x)$ for the proton over the range $0.02 \le x \le 0.345$. The E866 results are compared with predictions based on parton distribution functions and various theoretical models. The relationship between the E866 results and the NMC measurement of the Gottfried integral is discussed. The agreement between the E866 results and models employing virtual mesons indicates these non-perturbative processes play an important role in the origin of the $\bar d$, $\bar u$ asymmetry in the nucleon sea.

Measurement of the Light Antiquark Flavor Asymmetry in the Nucleon Sea

A precise measurement of the ratio of Drell-Yan yields from an 800 GeV/c proton beam incident on hydrogen and deuterium targets is reported. Over 140,000 Drell-Yan muon pairs with dimuon mass M_{mu+ mu-} >= 4.5 GeV/c^2 were recorded. From these data, the ratio of anti-down (dbar) to anti-up (ubar) quark distributions in the proton sea is determined over a wide range in Bjorken-x. A strong x dependence is observed in the ratio dbar/ubar, showing substantial enhancement of dbar with respect to ubar for x<0.2. This result is in fair agreement with recent parton distribution parameterizations of the sea. For x>0.2, the observed dbar/ubar ratio is much nearer unity than given by the parameterizations.

Abundance of Delta Resonances in 58Ni+58Ni Collisions between 1 and 2 AGeV

Charged pion spectra measured in 58Ni-58Ni collisions at 1.06, 1.45 and 1.93 AGeV are interpreted in terms of a thermal model including the decay of Delta resonances. The transverse momentum spectra of pions are well reproduced by adding the pions originating from the Delta-resonance decay to the component of thermal pions, deduced from the high transverse momentum part of the pion spectra. About 10 and 18% of the nucleons are excited to Delta states at freeze-out for beam energies of 1 and 2 AGeV, respectively.

Free Equations for Massive Matter Fields in 2+1 Dimensional Anti-de Sitter Space From Deformed Oscillator Algebra

We reformulate free equations of motion for massive spin 0 and spin 1/2 matter fields in 2+1 dimensional anti-de Sitter space in the form of some covariant constantness conditions. The infinite-dimensional representation of the anti-de Sitter algebra underlying this formulation is shown to admit a natural realization in terms of the algebra of deformed oscillators with a deformation parameter related to the parameter of mass.

Supertraces on the Algebras of Observables of the Rational Calogero Model with Harmonic Potential

We define a complete set of supertraces on the algebra $SH_N(ν)$, the algebra of observables of the $N$-body rational Calogero model with harmonic interaction. This result extends the previously known results for the simplest cases of $N=1$ and $N=2$ to arbitrary $N$. It is shown that $SH_N(ν)$ admits $q(N)$ independent supertraces where $q(N)$ is a number of partitions of $N$ into a sum of odd positive integers, so that $q(N)>1$ for $N\ge 3$. Some consequences of the existence of several independent supertraces of $SH_N (ν)$ are discussed such as the existence of ideals in associated $W_{\infty}$ - type Lie superalgebras.

The Calogero Model - Anyonic Representation, Fermionic Extension and Supersymmetry

We discuss several applications and extensions of our previous operator solution of the $N$-body Calogero problem, \ie N particles in 1 dimension subject to a two-body interaction of the form $\half \sum_{i,j}[ (x_i - x_j)^2 + g/ {(x_i - x_j)^2}]$. Using a complex representation of the deformed Heisenberg algebra underlying the Calogero model, we explicitly establish the equivalence between this system and anyons in the lowest Landau level. A construction based on supersymmetry is used to extend our operator method to include fermions, and we obtain an explicit solution of the supersymmetric Calogero model constructed by Freedman and Mende. We also show how the dynamical $OSp(2;2)$ supersymmetry is realized by bilinears of modified creation and annihilation operators, and how to construct a supersymmetic extension of the deformed Heisenberg algebra.

Explicit Solution to the N-Body Calogero Problem

We solve the N-body Calogero problem, \ie N particles in 1 dimension subject to a two-body interaction of the form $\half \sum_{i,j}[ (x_i - x_j)^2 + g/ {(x_i - x_j)^2}]$, by constructing annihilation and creation operators of the form $ a_i^\mp =\frac 1 {\sqrt 2} (x _i \pm i\hat{p}_i )$, where $\hat{p}_i$ is a modified momentum operator obeying %!!!!!!! Heisenberg-type commutation relations with $x_i$, involving explicitly permutation operators. On the other hand, $ D_j =i\,\hat{p}_j$ can be interpreted as a covariant derivative corresponding to a flat connection. The relation to fractional statistics in 1+1 dimensions and anyons in a strong magnetic field is briefly discussed.
