Detecting and modelling delayed density-dependence in abundance time series of a small mammal (Didelphis aurita)

We study the population size time series of a Neotropical small mammal with the intent of detecting and modelling population regulation processes generated by density-dependent factors and their possible delayed effects. The application of analysis tools based on principles of statistical generality are nowadays a common practice for describing these phenomena, but, in general, they are more capable of generating clear diagnosis rather than granting valuable modelling. For this reason, in our approach, we detect the principal temporal structures on the bases of different correlation measures, and from these results we build an ad-hoc minimalist autoregressive model that incorporates the main drivers of the dynamics. Surprisingly our model is capable of reproducing very well the time patterns of the empirical series and, for the first time, clearly outlines the importance of the time of attaining sexual maturity as a central temporal scale for the dynamics of this species. In fact, an important advantage of this analysis scheme is that all the model parameters are directly biologically interpretable and potentially measurable, allowing a consistency check between model outputs and independent measurements.

A Langevin model for complex cardiological time series

There has been considerable efforts to understand the underlying complex dynamics in physiological time series. Methods originated from statistical physics revealed a non-Gaussian statistics and long range correlations in those signals. This suggests that the regulatory system operates out of equilibrium. Herein the complex fluctuations in blood pressure time series were successful described by physiological motivated Langevin equation under a sigmoid restoring force with multiplicative noise.

Beyond the Hubbard-I Solution with a One-Pole Self-Energy at Half-Filling with the Moment Approach: Non-Linear Effects

We have postulated a single pole for the self-energy, $Σ(\vec{k},ω)$, looking for the consequences on the one-particle Green function, $G(\vec{k},ω)$ in the Hubbard model. We find that $G(\vec{k},ω)$ satisfies the first two sum rules or moments of Nolting (Z. Physik 255, 25 (1972)) for any values of the two unknown $\vec{k}$ parameters of $Σ(\vec{k},ω)$. In order to find these two parameters we have used the third and four sum rules of Nolting. $G(\vec{k},ω)$ turns out to be identical to the one of Nolting (Z. Physik 225, 25 (1972)), which is beyond a Hubbard-I solution since satisfies four sum rules. With our proposal we have been able to obtain an expansion in powers of $U$ for the self-energy (here to second order in $U$). We present numerical results at half-filling for 1- the static spin susceptibility, $χ(T)$ vs $T/t$ and 2- the band narrowing parameter, $B(T)$ vs $T/t$. The two-pole Ansatz of Nolting for the one-particle Green function is equivalent to a single pole Ansatz for the self-energy which remains the fundamental quantity for more elaborated calculations when, for example, lifetime effects are included.
