Improved Iterative Decoding for Perpendicular Magnetic Recording

An algorithm of improving the performance of iterative decoding on perpendicular magnetic recording is presented. This algorithm follows on the authors' previous works on the parallel and serial concatenated turbo codes and low-density parity-check codes. The application of this algorithm with signal-to-noise ratio mismatch technique shows promising results in the presence of media noise. We also show that, compare to the standard iterative decoding algorithm, an improvement of within one order of magnitude can be achieved.

Idempotents, Mattson-Solomon Polynomials and Binary LDPC codes

We show how to construct an algorithm to search for binary idempotents which may be used to construct binary LDPC codes. The algorithm, which allows control of the key properties of sparseness, code rate and minimum distance, is constructed in the Mattson-Solomon domain. Some of the new codes, found by using this technique, are displayed.

Polyhedral Cones of Magic Cubes and Squares

Using computational algebraic geometry techniques and Hilbert bases of polyhedral cones we derive explicit formulas and generating functions for the number of magic squares and magic cubes.

Search for the lepton-family-number nonconserving decay μ-> e + γ

The MEGA experiment, which searched for the muon- and electron-number violating decay μ-> e + γ, is described. The spectrometer system, the calibrations, the data taking procedures, the data analysis, and the sensitivity of the experiment are discussed. The most stringent upper limit on the branching ratio of μ-> e + γ) < 1.2 x 10^{-11} was obtained.

Azimuthal Asymmetries in Hadronic Final States at HERA

The distribution of hadrons produced in deeply inelastic electron-proton collisions depends on the azimuthal angle between lepton scattering plane and hadron production plane in the photon-proton centre-of-mass frame. In addition to the well known up-down asymmetry induced by the azimuthal dependence of the Born level subprocess, there is also a non-vanishing left-right asymmetry, provided the incoming electron is polarized. This asymmetry is time-reversal-odd and induced by absorptive corrections to the Born level process. We investigate the numerical magnitude of azimuthal asymmetries in semi-inclusive hadron production at HERA with particular emphasis on a possible determination of the time-reversal-odd asymmetry.
