Non-invasive vibrational mode spectroscopy of ion Coulomb crystals through resonant collective coupling to an optical cavity field

We report on a novel non-invasive method to determine the normal mode frequencies of ion Coulomb crystals in traps based on the resonance enhanced collective coupling between the electronic states of the ions and an optical cavity field at the single photon level. Excitations of the normal modes are observed through a Doppler broadening of the resonance. An excellent agreement with the predictions of a zero-temperature uniformly charged liquid plasma model is found. The technique opens up for investigations of the heating and damping of cold plasma modes, as well as the coupling between them.

Large ion Coulomb crystals: a near-ideal medium for coupling optical cavity modes to matter

We present an investigation of the coherent coupling of various transverse field modes of an optical cavity to ion Coulomb crystals. The obtained experimental results, which include the demonstration of identical collective coupling rates for different transverse modes of a cavity field to ions in the same large Coulomb crystal, are in excellent agreement with theoretical predictions. The results furthermore suggest that Coulomb crystals in the future may serve as near-ideal media for highfidelity multi-mode quantum information processing and communication purposes, including the generation and storage of single photon qubits encoded in different transverse modes.

Anderson localization of a weakly interacting one dimensional Bose gas

We consider the phase coherent transport of a quasi one-dimensional beam of Bose-Einstein condensed particles through a disordered potential of length L. Among the possible different types of flow identified in [T. Paul et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 210602 (2007)], we focus here on the supersonic stationary regime where Anderson localization exists. We generalize the diffusion formalism of Dorokhov-Mello-Pereyra-Kumar to include interaction effects. It is shown that interactions modify the localization length and also introduce a length scale L* for the disordered region, above which most of the realizations of the random potential lead to time dependent flows. A Fokker-Planck equation for the probability density of the transmission coefficient that takes this new effect into account is introduced and solved. The theoretical predictions are verified numerically for different types of disordered potentials. Experimental scenarios for observing our predictions are discussed.

Positioning of the rf potential minimum line of a linear Paul trap with micrometer precision

We demonstrate a general technique to achieve a precise radial displacement of the nodal line of the radiofrequency (rf) field in a linear Paul trap. The technique relies on selective adjustment of the load capacitance of the trap electrodes, achieved through the addition of capacitors to the basic resonant rf-circuit used to drive the trap. Displacements of up to 100 micrometer with micrometer precision are measured using a combination of fluorescence images of ion Coulomb crystals and coherent coupling of such crystals to a mode of an optical cavity. The displacements are made without measurable distortion of the shape or structure of the Coulomb crystals, as well as without introducing excess heating commonly associated with the radial displacement of crystals by adjustment through static potentials. We expect this technique to be of importance for future developments of microtrap architectures and ion-based cavity QED.

Dipole Oscillations of a Bose-Einstein Condensate in Presence of Defects and Disorder

We consider dipole oscillations of a trapped dilute Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of a scattering potential consisting either in a localized defect or in an extended disordered potential. In both cases the breaking of superfluidity and the damping of the oscillations are shown to be related to the appearance of a nonlinear dissipative flow. At supersonic velocities the flow becomes asymptotically dissipationless.

Monotonic Sequence Games

In a monotonic sequence game, two players alternately choose elements of a sequence from some fixed ordered set. The game ends when the resulting sequence contains either an ascending subsequence of length a or a descending one of length d. We investigate the behaviour of this game when played on finite linear orders or Q and provide some general observations for play on arbitrary ordered sets.

Regular closed classes of permutations

Machines whose main purpose is to permute and sort data are studied. The sets of permutations that can arise are analysed by means of finite automata and avoided pattern techniques. Conditions are given for these sets being enumerated by rational generating functions.

Measurement of the Reaction $^{12}C(ν_μ,μ^-) X$ Near Threshold

The reaction $^{12}C(ν_μ,μ^-) X$ has been measured near threshold using a $π^+$ decay-in-flight $ν_μ$ beam from the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility and a massive liquid scintillator neutrino detector (LSND). In the energy region $123.7 < E_ν< 280$ MeV, the measured spectral shape is consistent with that expected from the Fermi Gas Model. However, the measured flux-averaged inclusive cross section ($(8.3 \pm 0.7 stat. \pm 1.6 syst.) \times 10^{-40} cm^2$) is more than a factor of 2 lower than that predicted by the Fermi Gas Model and by a recent random phase approximation calculation.
