The Dynamical Radius of Comparison for C*-Dynamical Systems

We introduce a dynamical version $\operatorname{rc} (A, α)$ of the radius of comparison $\operatorname{rc} (A)$ of a unital C*-algebra, based on the dynamical Cuntz semigroup. We also give an intrinsic ordered semigroup definition, which agrees with $\operatorname{rc} (A, α)$ when $A$ is residually stably finite, and is lower semicontinuous for equivariant direct limits with injective unital maps. We construct actions $α$ of $G = \mathbb{Z} / 2 \mathbb{Z}$ on simple unital AH~algebras for which $\operatorname{rc} (A, α)$ lies strictly between $\operatorname{rc} (A)$ and $\operatorname{rc} (A) / \operatorname{card} (G)$, and actions $α$ of a finite group $G$ on unital C*-algebras for which $\operatorname{rc} (A, α)$ lies strictly between $\operatorname{rc} (A)$ and $\operatorname{rc} (C^* (G, A, α))$. For a minimal action of a countable discrete group $G$ on a zero dimensional compact metrizable space $X$, we prove that $\operatorname{rc} (C (X), α) = 0$ if and only if the action has dynamical comparison as defined by Kerr. For finite group actions on simple unital stably finite C*-algebras, assuming the weak tracial Rokhlin property, we get $\operatorname{rc} (A, α) \leq \operatorname{rc} (A) / \operatorname{card} (G)$, and assuming weak tracial strict approximate innerness, we get $\operatorname{rc} (A, α) = \operatorname{rc} (A)$.

The Rank Ratio Function and the Radius of Comparison

For any given Cuntz semigroup, we introduce a function associated to it, called the ``Rank Ratio Function". This function ensures global control over the oscillation of the rank of any pair of elements in the Cuntz semigroup and, also, plays a very important role in computing the relative radii of comparison of the Cuntz semigroups. Along the way, as we study both the C*-algebraic and algebraic aspects of the relative radius of comparison with a deeper analysis, we introduce another function called the ``Radius of Comparison Function" which provides a method for manufacturing non-classifiable C*-algebras with different relative radii of comparison.

The relative radius of comparison of the crossed product of a non-unital C*-algebra by a finite group

In this paper, we prove results on the relative radius of comparison of C*-algebras and their crossed products, focusing on the non-unital setting. More precisely, let $A$ be a stably finite simple non-type-I (not necessarily unital) C*-algebra, let $G$ be a finite group, and let $α\colon G \to {\operatorname{Aut}} (A)$ be an action which has the weak tracial Rokhlin property. Let $a$ be a non-zero positive element in $A^α\otimes \mathcal{K}$. Then we show that the radius of comparison of $\operatorname{Cu} (A^α)$ relative to $[a]$ is bounded above by the radius of comparison of $\operatorname{Cu} (A)$ relative to $[a]$. If further $A$ is exact and $a$ is in the Pedersen ideal of $A^α\otimes \mathcal{K}$, then the radius of comparison of $\operatorname{Cu} (A\rtimes_α G)$ relative to $[a]$ is equal to its radius of comparison relative to $[p\cdot a]$, scaled by $1/|G|$, where $p$ is the averaging projection in the multiplier algebra of $(A \otimes \mathcal{K}) \rtimes_{α\otimes \operatorname{id}} G$. Moreover, the radius of comparison of $\operatorname{Cu} (A\rtimes_α G)$ relative to $[a]$ is bounded above by $1/|G|$ times the radius of comparison of $\operatorname{Cu} (A)$ relative to $[a]$. We also prove that the inclusion of $A^α$ in $A$ induces an isomorphism from the purely positive part of the Cuntz semigroup ${\operatorname{Cu}} (A^α)$ to the fixed point of the purely positive part of ${\operatorname{Cu}} (A)$. An important consequence of our results is that they apply to non-unital C*-algebras and give new insights into comparison theory of C*-algebras and their crossed products.

Ranks of soft operators in nowhere scattered C*-algebras

We show that for C*-algebras with the Global Glimm Property, the rank of every operator can be realized as the rank of a soft operator, that is, an element whose hereditary sub-C*-algebra has no nonzero, unital quotients. This implies that the radius of comparison of such a C*-algebra is determined by the soft part of its Cuntz semigroup. Under a mild additional assumption, we show that every Cuntz class dominates a (unique) largest soft Cuntz class. This defines a retract from the Cuntz semigroup onto its soft part, and it follows that the covering dimensions of these semigroups differ by at most $1$.

Weakly tracially approximately representable actions

We describe a weak tracial analog of approximate representability under the name "weak tracial approximate representability" for finite group actions. Let $G$ be a finite abelian group, let $A$ be an infinite-dimensional simple unital C*-algebra, and let $α\colon G \to \operatorname{Aut} (A)$ be an action of $G$ on $A$ which is pointwise outer. Then $α$ has the weak tracial Rokhlin property if and only if the dual action $\widehatα$ of the Pontryagin dual $\widehat{G}$ on the crossed product $C^*(G, A, α)$ is weakly tracially approximately representable, and $α$ is weakly tracially approximately representable if and only if the dual action $\widehatα$ has the weak tracial Rokhlin property. This generalizes the results of Izumi in 2004 and Phillips in 2011 on the dual actions of finite abelian groups on unital simple C*-algebras.

The radius of comparison of the crossed product by a tracially strictly approximately inner action

Let $G$ be a finite group, let $A$ be an infinite-dimensional stably finite simple unital C*-algebra, and let $α\colon G \to \operatorname{Aut} (A)$ be a tracially strictly approximately inner action of $G$ on $A$. Then the radius of comparison satisfies $\operatorname{rc} (A) \leq \operatorname{rc} \big( C^*(G, A, α) \big)$ and if $C^*(G, A, α)$ is simple, then $\operatorname{rc} (A) \leq \operatorname{rc} \big( C^*(G, A, α) \big) \leq \operatorname{rc} (A^α)$. Further, the inclusion of $A$ in $C^*(G, A, α)$ induces an isomorphism from the purely positive part of the Cuntz semigroup $\operatorname{Cu} (A)$ to its image in $\operatorname{Cu} \left(C^*(G, A, α)\right)$. If $α$ is strictly approximately inner, then in fact $\operatorname{Cu} (A) \to \operatorname{Cu} \left(C^*(G, A, α) \right)$ is an ordered semigroup isomorphism onto its range. Also, for every finite group $G$ and for every $η\in \left(0, \frac{1}{\operatorname{card} (G)}\right)$, we construct a simple separable unital AH algebra $A$ with stable rank one and a strictly approximately inner action $α\colon G \to \operatorname{Aut} (A)$ such that: (1) $α$ is pointwise outer and doesn't have the weak tracial Rokhlin property. (2) $\operatorname{rc} (A) =\operatorname{rc} \left(C^*(G, A, α)\right)= η$.

The radius of comparison of the tensor product of a C*-algebra with $C (X)$

Let $X$ be a compact metric space, let $A$ be a unital AH algebra with large matrix sizes, and let $B$ be a stably finite unital C*-algebra. Then we give a lower bound for the radius of comparison of $C(X) \otimes B$ and prove that the dimension-rank ratio satisfies $\operatorname{drr} (A) = \operatorname{drr} \left(C(X)\otimes A\right)$. We also give a class of unital AH algebras $A$ with $\operatorname{rc} \left(C(X) \otimes A\right) = \operatorname{rc} (A)$. We further give a class of stably finite exact $\mathcal{Z}$-stable unital C*-algebras with nonzero radius of comparison.

The Cuntz semigroup and the radius of comparison of the crossed product by a finite group

Let G be a finite group, let A be an infinite-dimensional stably finite simple unital C*-algebra, and let α\colon G \to Aut (A) be an action of G on A which has the weak tracial Rokhlin property. Let A^α be the fixed point algebra. Then the radius of comparison satisfies rc (A^α) \leq rc (A) and rc ( C* (G, A, α) ) \leq ( 1 / card (G) ) rc (A). The inclusion of A^α in A induces an isomorphism from the purely positive part of the Cuntz semigroup Cu (A^α) to the fixed points of the purely positive part of Cu (A), and the purely positive part of Cu ( C* (G, A, α) ) is isomorphic to this semigroup. We construct an example in which G is the two element group, A is a simple unital AH algebra, αhas the Rokhlin property, rc (A) > 0, rc (A^α) = rc (A), and rc (C* (G, A, α)) = (1/2) rc (A).
