The Calar Alto Observatory: current status and future instrumentation

The Calar Alto Observatory, located at 2168m height above the sea level in continental Europe, holds a significant number of astronomical telescopes and experiments, covering a large range of the electromagnetic domain, from gamma-ray to near-infrared. It is a very well characterized site, with excellent logistics. Its main telescopes includes a large suite of instruments. At the present time, new instruments, namely CAFE, PANIC and Carmenes, are under development. We are also planning a new operational scheme in order to optimize the observatory resources.

GRB 060121: Implications of a Short/Intermediate Duration Gamma-Ray Burst at High Redshift

Since the discovery of the first short-hard gamma-ray burst afterglows in 2005, the handful of observed events have been found to be embedded in nearby (z < 1), bright underlying galaxies. We present multiwavelength observations of the short-duration burst GRB 060121, which is the first observed to clearly outshine its host galaxy (by a factor >10^2). A photometric redshift for this event places the progenitor at a most probable redshift of z = 4.6, with a less probable scenario of z = 1.7. In either case, GRB 060121 could be the farthermost short-duration GRB detected to date and implies an isotropic-equivalent energy release in gamma-rays comparable to that seen in long-duration bursts. We discuss the implications of the released energy on the nature of the progenitor. These results suggest that GRB 060121 may belong to a family of energetic short-duration events, lying at z > 1 and whose optical afterglows would outshine their host galaxies, unlike the first short-duration GRBs observed in 2005. The possibility of GRB 060121 being an intermediate duration burst is also discussed.

The absorbers towards Q0836+113

We have performed RIJHK_S imaging of the field around the z=2.67 quasar Q0836+113, which presents several metal line and a damped Lyαabsorption systems in its spectrum. The images reveal the existence of a red K_S=18.9 object \approx 11 arcsec from the quasar. On the basis of the empirical relationships between absorption radius and luminosity we conclude that this object may be the CIV absorber at z=1.82. This could be the first detection of a high redshift galaxy causing high-ionisation absorption. After carefully subtracting the QSO, we do not detect, up to a 3σlimiting magnitude for extended objects of K_S=20.8, the damped Lyαabsorber apparently detected as a Lyαemitter at z=2.47. It is also suggested, that object ``SW'' from Wolfe et al. (1992) could be the galaxy responsible for the claimed MgII absorption at z=0.37.
