Effective Acoustic Energy Sensing Exploitation for Target Sources Localization in Urban Acoustic Scenes

This letter proposes a new approach to improve the accuracy of the Energy-based source localization methods in urban acoustic scenes. The proposed acoustic energy sensing flow estimation (ESFE) uses the sensors signal nonstationarity degree to determine the area with highest energy concentration in the scenes. The ESFE is applied to different acoustic scenes and yields to source localization accuracy improvement with computational complexity reduction. The experiments results show that the proposed scheme leads to significant improvement in source localization accuracy.

French SKA White Book - The French Community towards the Square Kilometre Array

The "Square Kilometre Array" (SKA) is a large international radio telescope project characterised, as suggested by its name, by a total collecting area of approximately one square kilometre, and consisting of several interferometric arrays to observe at metric and centimetric wavelengths. The deployment of the SKA will take place in two sites, in South Africa and Australia, and in two successive phases. From its Phase 1, the SKA will be one of the most formidable scientific machines ever deployed by mankind, and by far the most impressive in terms of data throughput and required computing power. With the participation of almost 200 authors from forty research institutes and six private companies, the publication of this French SKA white paper illustrates the strong involvement in the SKA project of the French astronomical community and of a rapidly growing number of major scientific and technological players in the fields of Big Data, high performance computing, energy production and storage, as well as system integration.

Dust models compatible with Planck intensity and polarization data in translucent lines of sight

The dust properties inferred from the analysis of Planck observations in total and polarized emission challenge current dust models. We propose new dust models compatible with polarized and unpolarized data in extinction and emission for translucent lines of sight ($0.5 < A_V < 2.5$). We amended the DustEM tool to model polarized extinction and emission. We fit the spectral dependence of the mean extinction, polarized extinction, SED and polarized SED with PAHs, astrosilicates and amorphous carbon (a-C). The astrosilicate population is aligned along the magnetic field lines, while the a-C population may be aligned or not. With their current optical properties, oblate astrosilicate grains are not emissive enough to reproduce the emission to extinction polarization ratio $P_{353}/p_V$ derived with Planck data. Models using prolate astrosilicate grains with an elongation $a/b=3$ and an inclusion of 20% of porosity succeed. The spectral dependence of the polarized SED is steeper in our models than in the data. Models perform slightly better when a-C grains are aligned. A small (6%) volume inclusion of a-C in the astrosilicate matrix removes the need for porosity and perfect grain alignment, and improves the fit to the polarized SED. Dust models based on astrosilicates can be reconciled with Planck data by adapting the shape of grains and adding inclusions of porosity or a-C in the astrosilicate matrix.

PHIL photoinjector test line

LAL is now equiped with its own platform for photoinjectors tests and Research and Developement, named PHIL (PHotoInjectors at LAL). This facility has two main purposes: push the limits of the photoinjectors performances working on both the design and the associated technology and provide a low energy (MeV) short pulses (ps) electron beam for the interested users. Another very important goal of this machine will be to provide an opportunity to form accelerator physics students, working in a high technology environment. To achieve this goal a test line was realised equipped with an RF source, magnets and beam diagnostics. In this article we will desrcibe the PHIL beamline and its characteristics together with the description of the first two photoinjector realised in LAL and tested: the ALPHAX and the PHIN RF Guns.

The conical singularity method and the energy-momentum tensor near the black hole horizon using the Kruskal coordinates

We apply the conical singularity method to the two dimensional version of the Schwarzschild metric to obtain the Kruskal coordinates of the black hole in a very simple and direct way. Then we make use of this metric in an approximated version and calculate the expected value of energy-momentum tensor of a massless quantum field near the horizon, resulting in regular expressions for its components.

On the trace anomaly and the energy-momentum conservation of quantum fields at D=2 in classical curved backgrounds

We study the conformal symmetry and the energy-momentum conservation of scalar field interacting with a curved background at D=2. We avoid to incorporate the metric determinant into the measure of the scalar field to explain the conformal anomaly and the consequent energy-momentum conservation. Contrarily, we split the scalar field in two other fields, in such a way that just one of them can be quantized. We show that the same usual geometric quantities of the anomaly are obtained, which are accompanied by terms containing the new field of the theory.

String Cosmology in the Jackiw-Telteiboim Model with Quantum Corrections

This note deals with the possibility of non-trivial cosmological solutions given by quantum corrections in the framework of the Jackiw-Telteiboim model to the bidimensional gravity. The resulting model shows that the quantum corrections transform, in some cases, the classical solution into a more interesting one with initial singularity.

A Simple Line Element to the Dilaton Gravity

The metric to the two-dimensional dilaton gravity can be writen in an alternative form, similar to the two-dimensional Schwarzschild metric, and allow us the identification of some quantitiies with those equivalent in the Schwarzschild solution. This new form, howewer, presents a non-physical singularity at the horizon in the same way that in the realistic four dimensional case. We show a procedure to eliminate this horizon singularity and, as an application, the resulting metric is used to obtain the associated Hawking temperature. We discuss also some differents between this metric and the Schwarzcchild one.

Dilaton Gravity with a Non-minmally Coupled Scalar Field

We discuss the two-dimensional dilaton gravity with a scalar field as the source matter. The coupling between the gravity and the scalar, massless, field is presented in an unusual form. We work out two examples of these couplings and solutions with black-hole behaviour are discussed and compared with those found in the literature.

Black hole formation in bidimensional dilaton gravity coupled to scalar matter systems

This work deals with the formation of black hole in bidimensional dilaton gravity coupled to scalar matter fields. We investigate two scalar matter systems, one described by a sixth power potential and the other defined with two scalar fields containing up to the fourth power in the fields. The topological solutions that appear in these cases allow the formation of black holes in the corresponding dilaton gravity models.

Hawking Radiation in the Dilaton Gravity with a Non-Minimally Coupled Scalar Field

We discuss the two-dimensional dilaton gravity with a scalar field as the source matter where the coupling with the gravity is given, besides the minimal one, through an external field. This coupling generalizes the conformal anomaly in the same way as those found in recent literature, but with a diferent motivation. The modification to the Hawking radiation is calculated explicity and shows an additional term that introduces a dependence on the (effective) mass of the black-hole.

Quantum Corrections to the Two-dimensional Gravity with External Field

We introduce an external field to calculate the quantum corrections of the 2d gravity, via trace anomaly. We show that there are black hole type solution even in the absence of matter field and cosmological constant. We also see that these solutions are similar to the ones obtained from dilaton two-dimensional gravity.
