Upper limit on the cosmic-ray photon fraction at EeV energies from the Pierre Auger Observatory

From direct observations of the longitudinal development of ultra-high energy air showers performed with the Pierre Auger Observatory, upper limits of 3.8%, 2.4%, 3.5% and 11.7% (at 95% c.l.) are obtained on the fraction of cosmic-ray photons above 2, 3, 5 and 10 EeV (1 EeV = 10^18 eV) respectively. These are the first experimental limits on ultra-high energy photons at energies below 10 EeV. The results complement previous constraints on top-down models from array data and they reduce systematic uncertainties in the interpretation of shower data in terms of primary flux, nuclear composition and proton-air cross-section.

Comparison between methods for the determination of the primary cosmic ray mass composition from the longitudinal profile of atmospheric cascades

The determination of the primary cosmic ray mass composition from the longitudinal development of atmospheric cascades is still a debated issue. In this work we discuss several data analysis methods and show that if the entire information contained in the longitudinal profile is exploited, reliable results may be obtained. Among the proposed methods FCC ('Fit of the Cascade Curve'), MTA ('Multiparametric Topological Analysis') and NNA ('Neural Net Analysis') with conjugate gradient optimization algorithm give the best accuracy.

A new method for the UHECR mass composition studies

The detemination of the primary cosmic ray mass composition from the longitudinal development of atmospheric cascades is still an open problem. In this work we propose a new method of the multiparametric topological analysis and show that if both X$_{max}$ - the depth of shower maximum and N$_{max}$ - the number of charged particles in the shower maximum are used, reliable results can be obtained.

A new multiparametric topological method for determining the primary cosmic ray mass composition in the knee energy region

The determination of the primary cosmic ray mass composition from the characteristics of extensive air showers (EAS), obtained at an observation level in the lower half of the atmosphere, is still an open problem. In this work we propose a new method of the Multiparametric Topological Analysis and show its applicability for the determination of the mass composition of the primary cosmic rays at the PeV energy region.

The OPERA magnetic spectrometer

The OPERA neutrino oscillation experiment foresees the construction of two magnetized iron spectrometers located after the lead-nuclear emulsion targets. The magnet is made up of two vertical walls of rectangular cross section connected by return yokes. The particle trajectories are measured by high precision drift tubes located before and after the arms of the magnet. Moreover, the magnet steel is instrumented with Resistive Plate Chambers that ease pattern recognition and allow a calorimetric measurement of the hadronic showers. In this paper we review the construction of the spectrometers. In particular, we describe the results obtained from the magnet and RPC prototypes and the installation of the final apparatus at the Gran Sasso laboratories. We discuss the mechanical and magnetic properties of the steel and the techniques employed to calibrate the field in the bulk of the magnet. Moreover, results of the tests and issues concerning the mass production of the Resistive Plate Chambers are reported. Finally, the expected physics performance of the detector is described; estimates rely on numerical simulations and the outcome of the tests described above.

Corsika+Herwig Monte Carlo Simulation of Neutrino Induced Atmospheric Air Showers

High-energy neutrino astronomy represents an open window both on astrophysical mechanisms of particle acceleration and on fundamental interactions. The possibility of detecting them in large earth-based apparatus, like AUGER, AMANDA, ANTARES, is quite challenging. In view of this, the capability of generating reliable simulations of air showers induced by neutrinos is mandatory in the analysis of experimental data. In this paper we describe preliminary results towards the development of a new version of the Monte Carlo CORSIKA, capable of handling neutrinos too as primary particles. In our approach the first interaction of the primary neutrino is simulated in CORSIKA with a call to the HERWIG event generator.

The Search for the Sidereal and Solar Diurnal Modulations in the Total MACRO Muon Data Set

We have analyzed 44.3M single muons collected by MACRO from 1991 through 2000 in 2,145 live days of operation. We have searched for the solar diurnal, apparent sidereal, and pseudo-sidereal modulation of the underground muon rate by computing hourly deviations of the muon rate from 6 month averages. We find evidence for statistically significant modulations with the solar diurnal and the sidereal periods. The amplitudes of these modulations are <0.1%, and are at the limit of the detector statistics. The pseudo-sidereal modulation is not statistically significant. The solar diurnal modulation is due to the daily atmospheric temperature variations at 20 km, the altitude of primary cosmic ray interactions with the atmosphere; MACRO is the deepest experiment to report this result. The sidereal modulation is in addition to the expected Compton-Getting modulation due to solar system motion relative to the Local Standard of Rest; it represents motion of the solar system with respect to the galactic cosmic rays toward the Perseus spiral arm.

Measurement of the residual energy of muons in the Gran Sasso underground Laboratories

The MACRO detector was located in the Hall B of the Gran Sasso underground Laboratories under an average rock overburden of 3700 hg/cm^2. A transition radiation detector composed of three identical modules, covering a total horizontal area of 36 m^2, was installed inside the empty upper part of the detector in order to measure the residual energy of muons. This paper presents the measurement of the residual energy of single and double muons crossing the apparatus. Our data show that double muons are more energetic than single ones. This measurement is performed over a standard rock depth range from 3000 to 6500 hg/cm^2.

Search for cosmic ray sources using muons detected by the MACRO experiment

The MACRO underground detector at Gran Sasso Laboratory recorded 60 million secondary cosmic ray muons from February 1989 until December 2000. Different techniques were used to analyze this sample in search for density excesses from astrophysical point-like sources. No evidence for DC excesses for any source in an all-sky survey is reported. In addition, searches for muon excess correlated with the known binary periods of Cygnus X-3 and Hercules X-1, and searches for statistically significant bursting episodes from known gamma ray sources are also proved negative.

Neutrino astronomy with the MACRO detector

High energy gamma ray astronomy is now a well established field and several sources have been discovered in the region from a few GeV up to several TeV. If sources involving hadronic processes exist, the production of photons would be accompanied by neutrinos too. Other possible neutrino sources could be related to the annihilation of WIMPs at the center of galaxies with black holes. We present the results of a search for point-like sources using 1100 upward-going muons produced by neutrino interactions in the rock below and inside the MACRO detector in the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory. These data show no evidence for a possible neutrino point-like source or for possible correlations between gamma ray bursts and neutrinos. They have been used to set flux upper limits for candidate point-like sources which are in the range 10^-14-10^-15 cm-2 s-1.

Measurement of neutrino oscillations by means of a high density detector on the atmospheric neutrino beam

A high-density calorimeter, consisting of magnetized iron planes interleaved by RPCs, as tracking and timing devices, is a good candidate for a next generation experiment on atmospheric neutrinos. With 34 kt of mass and in four years of data taking, this experiment will be sensitive to $ν_μ\to ν_x$ oscillation with $Δm^2 > 6 \times 10^{-5}$ and mixing near to maximal and fully cover the region of oscillation parameters suggested by Super-Kamiokande results. Moreover, the experimental method will enable to measure the oscillation parameters from the modulation of the L/E spectrum ($ν_μ$ disappearance). For $Δm^2 > 3 \times 10^{-3}$ eV$^2$, this experiment can also establish whether the oscillation occurs into a tau or a sterile neutrino, by looking for an excess of muon-less events at high energies produced by upward-going tau neutrinos ($ν_τ$ appearance).
