Studies of $\rm ^{144,148}Sm+α$ potential for the $p$-process nucleosynthesis

Nucleosynthesis reaction networks leading to $p$-nuclei involve a combination of different types of photodisintegration and capture reactions, as well as $β^+$ decays or electron captures. Photodisintegration reactions involving $α$ particles present a particular interest as they serve as branching points of the reaction networks. The cross sections of these reactions depend crucially on the $α$-nucleus interaction. The $α$ optical model potential (AOMP) is determined mostly by means of experimental differential elastic scattering distributions. Several previous studies have focused on the case of $\rm ^{144}Sm$, an intriguing $p$-nucleus that is semi-magic with 82 neutrons. This work presents new experimental data on $α$ elastic and inelastic scattering on $\rm ^{148}Sm$, its closest stable isotope. Isotopic effects on the description of the AOMP are studied, as well as their consequences on the prediction of $α$-induced reaction cross sections at astrophysical energies. It is shown that the isotopic ratio for $(α,γ)$ cross sections can be multiplied up to a factor of two when these effects are included.

Evolution of Spectroscopic Factors in Neutron-deficient $p$-shell Nuclei in connection with Short-Range Correlations

We report an uncertainty-controlled determination of neutron-removal spectroscopic factors in the neutron-deficient $p$-shell nuclei $^{12}\mathrm{C}$, $^{10}\mathrm{C}$, $^{9}\mathrm{C}$, and $^{8}\mathrm{B}$, all measured under uniform conditions through exclusive ground-state-to-ground-state $(p,d)$ reactions at about 50 MeV/nucleon in a liquid hydrogen target at the GANIL/LISE facility. The deuterons were detected in the highly-segmented MUST2 detector placed at forward angles and the excitation energy was reconstructed by the missing mass method. Several transitions, including a new state in $^7\mathrm{B}$, were observed. Differential cross sections, which display an $L=1$ pattern for all nuclei, were fitted with 416 sets of uncertainty-quantified optical-model potential parameters and considering various single-particle bound-state wavefunctions to derive $C^2S$ values. The ratio between experimental and shell-model calculated values, $R_S$, is found to be slightly decreasing as a function of increasing proton to neutron separation energy asymmetry $ΔS$, with a slope of $-0.0049(36)_{\rm stat}(13)_{\rm omp}(8)_{\rm s.p.}$. The observed trend is compatible with the phenomenological expectation that the short-range correlation effect on $C^2S$ increases with the degree of nucleon minority. The present data set delivers a high-precision benchmark that will tightly constrain future microscopic descriptions of short-range correlations in asymmetric nuclei.

Direct transfer to $^{46,48}$K as a survey of the $π(s_{1/2})$$-ν(sdpf)$ interaction

The collapse of the canonical $N=28$ magic number in nuclei with $Z<20$ has drawn significant interest as it relates to the emergence of an island of inversion centered on $^{42}$Si and $^{44}$S. In particular, interactions between the $πs_{1/2}$ orbital -- empty in $^{42}$Si and full in $^{44}$S -- and the neutron orbitals just above and below the $N=28$ gap are expected to be critical in this region, but remain relatively unexplored. In this paper, we expand upon the results of our previous study of the direct transfer reaction $^{47}$K(d,p$γ$)$^{48}$K [C.\,J.~Paxman \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. 134, 162504 (2025)] with the results of the complementary $^{47}$K(d,t$γ$)$^{46}$K reaction. Through this study, we present a comprehensive scan of the interaction between the critical $πs_{1/2}$ orbital and a broad range of neutron orbitals spanning nearly two full shells. We identify several discrepancies between the experimental results and state-of-the-art shell model calculations, which suggest a deficiency of the shell model to fully capture the complex proton configuration mixing in this region, highlighting a significant challenge for single-particle descriptions of the island of inversion.

Unbound neutron $\nu0d_{3/2}$ strength in $^{17}$C and the N=16 shell gap

Significant continuum strength has been observed to be populated in $^{17}$C produced in the d($^{16}$C,p) reaction at a beam energy of 17.2~MeV/nucleon. The strength appears at greater than $\sim$2~MeV above the single-neutron decay threshold and has been identified as arising from transfer into the neutron $0d_{3/2}$ orbital. Guided by shell model predictions the greater majority of the strength is associated with a 3/2$^+$ state at an excitation energy of 4.40$_{-0.14}^{+0.33}$ MeV and a much weaker 3/2$^+$ level at 5.60$_{-0.45}^{+1.35}$ MeV. The corresponding total widths were determined to be 3.45$_{-0.78}^{+1.82}$ and 1.6$_{-1.4}^{+4.6}$ MeV, respectively. From the backward angle proton differential cross sections and the branching ratios for neutron decay to the $^{16}$C(2$_{1}^{+}$) level, the corresponding spectroscopic factors to the ground state were deduced to be 0.47$\pm{10}$ and $<$0.09. Shell-model calculations employing the phenomenological SFO-tls interaction as well as Gamow Shell-Model calculations including continuum effects are in reasonable agreement with experiment, although the predicted strength lies at somewhat lower energy. The size of the N=16 shell gap ($\varepsilon_{ \nu0d_{3/2}}-\varepsilon _{ν1s_{1/2}}$) was estimated to be 5.08$_{-0.33}^{+0.43}$~MeV - some 1.3~MeV larger than found in the SFO-tls shell model calculation.

Probing exotic cross-shell interactions at N=28 with single-neutron transfer on 47K

We present the first measurement of the $^{47}$K($d,pγ$)$^{48}$K transfer reaction, performed in inverse kinematics using a reaccelerated beam of $^{47}$K. The level scheme of $^{48}$K has been greatly extended with nine new bound excited states identified and spectroscopic factors deduced. Detailed comparisons with SDPF-U and SDPF-MU shell-model calculations reveal a number of discrepancies with these results, and a preference for SDPF-MU is found. Intriguingly, an apparent systematic overestimation of spectroscopic factors and a poor reproduction of the energies for 1$^-$ states suggests that the mixing between the $πs^{\,\,\,1}_{1/2} d^{\,\,\,4}_{3/2}$ and $πs^{\,\,\,2}_{1/2} d^{\,\,\,3}_{3/2}$ proton configurations in $^{48}$K is not correctly described using current interactions, challenging our descriptions of light $N=28$ nuclei.

Neutron-proton pairing in the unstable N=Z nuclei of the f-shell through two-nucleon transfer reactions

Pair transfer is a unique tool to study pairing correlations in nuclei. Neutron-proton pairing is investigated in the N=Z nuclei of the f-shell, through the reaction (p,3He) in inverse kinematics, that allows to populate at the same time the lowest J=0+, T=1 (isovector pairing) state and J=1+, T=0 (isoscalar pairing) state. Radioactive beams of 56Ni and 52Fe produced by fragmentation at the GANIL/LISE facility combined with particle and gamma-ray detection make it possible to carry out this study from 48Cr (mid-shell nucleus) to 56Ni (doubly-magic nucleus). The cross-sections were extracted and compared with second-order distorted-wave born approximation (DWBA) calculations performed with neutron-proton amplitudes obtained from shell model calculations with GXPF1 interaction. Very low cross-sections for the J=1+,T=0 state (isoscalar channel) were observed. The cross-section for 56Ni is one of order of magnitude lower than for 40Ca showing a strong reduction of the isoscalar channel in the f-shell as compared to the sd-shell. On the other hand, the increase of the cross-section towards the middle of the shell for the isovector channel points towards a possible superfluid phase.

High-precision spectroscopy of $^{20}$O benchmarking ab-initio calculations in light nuclei

The excited states of unstable $^{20}$O were investigated via $γ$-ray spectroscopy following the $^{19}$O$(d,p)^{20}$O reaction at 8 $A$MeV. By exploiting the Doppler Shift Attenuation Method, the lifetime of the 2$^+_2$ and 3$^+_1$ states were firmly established. From the $γ$-ray branching and E2/M1 mixing ratios for transitions deexciting the 2$^+_2$ and 3$^+_1$ states, the B(E2) and B(M1) were determined. Various chiral effective field theory Hamiltonians, describing the nuclear properties beyond ground states, along with a standard USDB interaction, were compared with the experimentally obtained data. Such a comparison for a large set of $γ$-ray transition probabilities with the valence space in medium similarity renormalization group ab-initio calculations was performed for the first time in a nucleus far from stability. It was shown that the ab-initio approaches using chiral EFT forces are challenged by detailed high-precision spectroscopic properties of nuclei. The reduced transition probabilities were found to be a very constraining test of the performance of the ab-initio models.

Overview of the experimental quest for the giant pairing vibration

The search for the giant pairing vibration (GPV) has a long standing history since the 1970's when it was predicted. First experimental measurements focused on (p,t) transfer reactions in the heavy nuclei and did not show convincing evidence. The discovery of a signal compatible with the GPV in the light carbon isotopes has renewed the interest for the GPV. It triggered new theoretical models showing that the GPV in the heavy nuclei might be too wide or too melted to be observed and triggered new experiments with radioactive probes based on ($^{6}$He,$^{4}$He) transfer.

Validation of the $^{10}\mathrm{Be}$ Ground-State Molecular Structure Using $^{10}\mathrm{Be}(p,pα)^{6}\mathrm{He}$ Triple Differential Reaction Cross-Section Measurements

The cluster structure of the neutron-rich isotope $^{10}$Be has been probed via the $(p,pα)$ reaction at 150 MeV/nucleon in inverse kinematics and in quasifree conditions. The populated states of $^{6}$He residues were investigated through missing mass spectroscopy. The triple differential cross-section for the ground-state transition was extracted for quasifree angle pairs ($θ_{p}$, $θ_α$) and compared to distorted-wave impulse approximation reaction calculations performed in a microscopic framework using successively the Tohsaki-Horiuchi-Schuck-Röpke product wave-function and the wave-function deduced from Antisymmetrized Molecular Dynamics calculations. The remarkable agreement between calculated and measured cross-sections in both shape and magnitude validates the molecular structure description of the $^{10}$Be ground-state, configured as an $α$-$α$ core with two valence neutrons occupying $π$-type molecular orbitals.

Overview and performance of the 2023 MUGAST@LISE campaign at GANIL

MUGAST is a state-of-the-art silicon array combining trapezoidal and square shaped double-sided silicon strip detectors (DSSD) to four MUST2 telescopes. Coupled to a γ-ray spectrometer, the excellent angular coverage and compacity of the MUGAST array make it an ideal tool for the study of transfer reactions. It is a first step toward the development of the new generation of silicon arrays using pulse shape analysis (PSA) for particle identification, such as the future GRIT array developed by our collaboration. In recent years, MUGAST has been widely used at GANIL. First with the AGATA γ-ray spectrometer and the VAMOS large acceptance spectrometer for the study of ISOL beams from the SPIRAL1 facility. It is now coupled with twelve EXOGAM clovers and to a new zero degree detection system at the end of the LISE fragmentation beamline.

Variation of Tensor Force due to Nuclear Medium Effect

The enhancement of $J^π(T)$=3$^{+}$(0) state with isospin $T=0$ excited by the tensor force in the free $^{6}$Li nucleus has been observed, for the first time, relative to a shrinkable excitation in the $^{6}$Li cluster component inside its host nucleus. Comparatively, the excitation of $J^π(T)$=0$^{+}$(1) state with isospin $T=1$ for these two $^{6}$Li formations take on an approximately equal excitation strength. The mechanism of such tensor force effect was proposed due to the intensive nuclear medium role on isospin $T$=0 state.

Aspect of Clusters Correlation at Light Nuclei Excited State

The correlation of $αα$ was probed via measuring the transverse momentum $p_{T}$ and width $δp_{T}$ of one $α$, for the first time, which represents the spatial and dynamical essentialities of the initial coupling state in $^{8}$Be nucleus. The weighted interaction vertex of 3$α$ reflected by the magnitudes of their relative momentums and relative emission angles proves the isosceles triangle configuration for 3$α$ at the high excited energy analogous Hoyle states.

Multi-alpha Boson Gas state in Fusion Evaporation Reaction and Three-body Force

The experimental evidence for the $α$ Boson gas state in the $^{11}$C+$^{12}$C$\rightarrow$$^{23}$Mg$^{\ast}$ fusion evaporation reaction is presented. By measuring the $α$ emission spectrum with multiplicity 2 and 3, we provide insight into the existence of a three-body force among $α$ particles. The observed spectrum exhibited distinct tails corresponding to $α$ particles emitted in pairs and triplets consistent well with the model-calculations of AV18-UX and chiral effective field theory of NV2-3-la*, indicating the formation of $α$ clusters with three-body force in the Boson gas state.

N=16 magicity revealed at the proton drip-line through the study of 35Ca

The last proton bound calcium isotope $^{35}$Ca has been studied for the first time, using the $^{37}$Ca($p, t$)$^{35}$Ca two neutron transfer reaction. The radioactive $^{37}$Ca nuclei, produced by the LISE spectrometer at GANIL, interacted with the protons of the liquid hydrogen target CRYPTA, to produce tritons $t$ that were detected in the MUST2 detector array, in coincidence with the heavy residues Ca or Ar. The atomic mass of $^{35}$Ca and the energy of its first 3/2$^+$ state are reported. A large $N=16$ gap of 4.61(11) MeV is deduced from the mass measurement, which together with other measured properties, makes $^{36}$Ca a doubly-magic nucleus. The $N = 16$ shell gaps in $^{36}$Ca and $^{24}$O are of similar amplitude, at both edges of the valley of stability. This feature is discussed in terms of nuclear forces involved, within state-of-the-art shell model calculations. Even though the global agreement with data is quite convincing, the calculations underestimate the size of the $N = 16$ gap in 36Ca by 840(110) keV.

Cross-shell states in $^{15}$C: a test for p-sd interactions

The low-lying structure of $^{15}$C has been investigated via the neutron-removal $^{16}$C$(d,t)$ reaction. Along with bound neutron sd-shell hole states, unbound p-shell hole states have been firmly confirmed. The excitation energies and the deduced spectroscopic factors of the cross-shell states are an important measure of the $[(p)^{-1}(sd)^{2}]$ neutron configurations in $^{15}$C. Our results show a very good agreement with shell-model calculations using the SFO-tls interaction for $^{15}$C. However, a modification of the $p$-$sd$ and $sd$-$sd$ monopole terms was applied in order to reproduce the $N=9$ isotone $^{17}$O. In addition, the excitation energies and spectroscopic factors have been compared to the first calculations of $^{15}$C with the $ab~ initio$ self-consistent Green's function method employing the NNLO$_{sat}$ interaction. The results show the sensitivity to the size of the $N=8$ shell gap and highlight the need of going beyond the current truncation scheme in the theory.

The structure of $^{36}$Ca under the Coulomb magnifying glass

Detailed spectroscopy of the neutron-deficient nucleus $^{36}$Ca was obtained up to 9 MeV using the $^{37}$Ca($p$,$d$)$^{36}$Ca and the $^{38}$Ca($p$,$t$)$^{36}$Ca transfer reactions. The radioactive nuclei, produced by the LISE spectrometer at GANIL, interacted with the protons of the liquid Hydrogen target CRYPTA, to produce light ejectiles (the deuteron $d$ or triton $t$) that were detected in the MUST2 detector array, in coincidence with the heavy residues %identified by a zero degree detection system. %States have been measured up to 9 MeV. Our main findings are: i) a similar shift in energy for the 1$^+_1$ and 2$^+_1$ states by about -250 keV, as compared to the mirror nucleus $^{36}$S, ii) the discovery of an intruder 0$^+_2$ state at 2.83(13) MeV, which appears below the first 2$^+$ state, in contradiction with the situation in $^{36}$S, and iii) a tentative 0$^+_3$ state at 4.83(17) MeV, proposed to exhibit a bubble structure with two neutron vacancies in the 2s$_{1/2}$ orbit. The inversion between the 0$^+_2$ and 2$^+_1$ states is due to the large mirror energy difference (MED) of -516(130) keV for the former. This feature is reproduced by Shell Model (SM) calculations, using the $sd$-$pf$ valence space, predicting an almost pure intruder nature for the 0$^+_2$ state, with two protons (neutrons) being excited across the $Z$=20 magic closure in $^{36}$Ca ($^{36}$S). This mirror system has the largest MEDs ever observed, if one excludes the few cases induced by the effect of the continuum.

Narrow resonances in the continuum of the unbound nucleus $^{15}$F

The structure of the unbound $^{15}$F nucleus is investigated using the inverse kinematics resonant scattering of a radioactive $^{14}$O beam impinging on a CH$_2$ target. The analysis of $^{1}$H($^{14}$O,p)$^{14}$O and $^{1}$H($^{14}$O,2p)$^{13}$N reactions allowed the confirmation of the previously observed narrow $1/2^{-}$ resonance, near the two-proton decay threshold, and the identification of two new narrow 5/2$^{-}$ and 3/2$^{-}$ resonances. The newly observed levels decay by 1p emission to the ground of $^{14}$O, and by sequential 2p emission to the ground state (g.s.) of $^{13}$N via the $1^-$ resonance of $^{14}$O. Gamow shell model (GSM) analysis of the experimental data suggests that the wave functions of the 5/2$^{-}$ and 3/2$^{-}$ resonances may be collectivized by the continuum coupling to nearby 2p- and 1p- decay channels. The observed excitation function $^{1}$H($^{14}$O,p)$^{14}$O and resonance spectrum in $^{15}$F are well reproduced in the unified framework of the GSM.

Pulse shape discrimination for GRIT: beam test of a new integrated charge and current preamplifier coupled with high granularity Silicon detectors

The GRIT (Granularity, Resolution, Identification, Transparency) Silicon array is intended to measure direct reactions. Its design is based on several layers (three layers in the forward direction, two backward) of custom-made trapezoidal and square detectors. The first stage is 500 μm thick and features 128x128 orthogonal strips. Pulse shape analysis for particle identification is implemented for this first layer. Given the compacity of this array and the large number of channels involved (>7,500), an integrated preamplifier, iPACI, that gives charge and current information has been developed in the AMS 0.35 μm BiCMOS technology. The design specifications and results of the test bench are presented. Considering an energy range of 50 MeV and an energy resolution (FWHM) of 12 keV (FWHM) for the preamplifier, the energy resolution for one strip obtained from alpha source measurement in real conditions is 35 keV. The current output bandwidth is measured at 130 MHz for small signals and the power consumption reaches 40 mW per detector channel. A first beam test was performed coupling a nTD trapezoidal double-sided stripped Silicon detector of GRIT with the iPACI preamplifier and a 64-channel digitizer. Z=1 particles are discriminated with pulse shape analysis technique down to 2 MeV for protons, 2.5 MeV for deuterons and 3 MeV for tritons. The effect of the strip length due to the trapezoidal shape of the detector is investigated on both the N- and the P-side, showing no significant impact.
