Magneto - transport characterization of Dy123 monodomain superconductors

The following report considers textured materials of the DyBa2Cu3O7 type seeded with a Nd123 seed as initiator. They are grown with an excess 20% Dy211 phase on a Dy2O3 substrate. We report chemical characterizations, electrical resistivity, thermoelectric power and thermal conductivity over a broad temperature range as a function of an applied magnetic field up to 6 T. We show that specific features appear on the magneto thermal transport properties different in these materials from those found in single crystals and polycrystalline samples. We propose that two vortex regimes can be distinguished in the mixed phase, - due to the intrinsic microstructure. We calculate the viscosity, entropy and figure of merit of the samples.

Scaling Analysis and Evolution Equation of the North Atlantic Oscillation Index Fluctuations

The North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) monthly index is studied from 1825 till 2002 in order to identify the scaling ranges of its fluctuations upon different delay times and to find out whether or not it can be regarded as a Markov process. A Hurst rescaled range analysis and a detrended fluctuation analysis both indicate the existence of weakly persistent long range time correlations for the whole scaling range and time span hereby studied. Such correlations are similar to Brownian fluctuations. The Fokker-Planck equation is derived and Kramers-Moyal coefficients estimated from the data. They are interpreted in terms of a drift and a diffusion coefficient as in fluid mechanics. All partial distribution functions of the NAO monthly index fluctuations have a form close to a Gaussian, for all time lags, in agreement with the findings of the scaling analyses. This indicates the lack of predictive power of the present NAO monthly index. Yet there are some deviations for large (and thus rare) events. Whence suggestions for other measurements are made if some improved predictability of the weather/climate in the North Atlantic is of interest. The subsequent Langevin equation of the NAO signal fluctuations is explicitly written in terms of the diffusion and drift parameters, and a characteristic time scale for these is given in appendix.

Exponential and power law distribution of mass clusters in a (magnetic-like) deposition model of elongated grains in 2D piles

A generalized so called magnetically controlled ballistic rain-like deposition (MBD) model of granular piles has been numerically investigated in 2D. The grains are taken to be elongated disks whence characterized by a two-state scalar degree of freedom, called ''nip'', their interaction being described through a Hamiltonian. Results are discussed in order to search for the effect of nip flip (or grain rotation from vertical to horizontal and conversely) probability in building a granular pile. The characteristics of creation of + (or $-$) nip's clusters and clusters of holes (missing nips) are analyzed. Two different cluster-mass regimes have been identified, through the cluster-mass distribution function which can be exponential or have a power law form depending on whether the nip flip (or grain rotation) probability is large or small. Analytical forms of the exponent are empirically found in terms of the Hamiltonian parameters.

A logistic map approach to economic cycles I. The best adapted companies

A birth-death lattice gas model about the influence of an environment on the fitness and concentration evolution of economic entities is analytically examined. The model can be mapped onto a high order logistic map. The control parameter is a (scalar) "business plan". Conditions are searched for growth and decay processes, stable states, upper and lower bounds, bifurcations, periodic and chaotic solutions. The evolution equation of the economic population for the best fitted companies indicates "microscopic conditions" for cycling. The evolution of a dynamic exponent is shown as a function of the business plan parameters.

Searching for self-similarity in switching time and turbulent cascades in ion transport through a biochannel. A time delay asymmetry

The process of ion transport through a locust potassium channel is described by means of the Fokker-Planck equation (FPE). The deterministic and stochastic components of the process of switching between various conducting states of the channel are expressed by two coefficients, $D^{(1)}$ and $D^{(2)}$, a drift and a diffusion coefficient, respectively. The FPE leads to a Langevin equation. This analysis reveals beside the well known deterministic aspects a turbulent, cascade type of action. The (noisy-like) switching between different conducting states prevents the channel from staying in one, closed or open state. The similarity between the hydrodynamic flow in the turbulent regime and hierarchical switching between conducting states of this biochannel is discussed. A non-trivial character of $D^{(1)}$ and $D^{(2)}$ coefficients is shown, which points to different processes governing the channel's action, asymetrically depending on the history of the previously conducting states. Moreover, the Fokker-Planck and Langevin equations provide information on whether and how the statistics of the channel action change over various time scales.

AC magnetic behavior of large grain magneto-resistive La0.78Ca0.22Mn0.90Ox materials

We report a detailed set of AC magnetic measurements carried out on bulk large grain La-Ca-Mn-O samples extracted from a floating zone method-grown rod. Three samples with $La_{0.78}Ca_{0.22}Mn_{0.90}O_{x}$ stoichiometry but differing in their microstructure were investigated by electrical resistivity and AC susceptibility measurements: (i) a single grain sample, (ii) a sample containing two grains and (iii) a polycrystalline sample. We show that the superimposition of DC magnetic fields during AC magnetic susceptibility measurements is an efficient way for characterizing the magnetic transition of samples with different microstructures. Whereas both single grain and polycrystalline samples display a single susceptibility peak, an additional kink structure is observed in the case of the double grain sample. The temperature dependence of the AC susceptibility measured with superimposed DC magnetic fields is analyzed in the framework of second-order phase transition ideas. The relations between the critical exponents ($β+ γ$ ~ 1.5, $δ$ ~ 2.5) are found to be close to those of the mean-field model for all samples. This is attributed to the disordering caused by unoccupied Mn sites.

Aging process of electrical contacts in granular matter

The electrical resistance decay of a metallic granular packing has been measured as a function of time. This measurement gives information about the size of the conducting cluster formed by the well connected grains. Several regimes have been encountered. Chronologically, the first one concerns the growth of the conducting cluster and is identified to belong to diffusion processes through a stretched exponential behavior. The relaxation time is found to be simply related to the initial injected power. This regime is followed by a reorganisation process due to thermal dilatation. For the long term behavior of the decay, an aging process occurs and enhances the electrical contacts between grains through microsoldering.

The contribution of 211 particles to the mechanical reinforcement mechanism of 123 superconducting single domains

Hardness and fracture toughness of Dy-123 single-domains were studied by Vickers micro-indentation. A significant anisotropy of the mechanical properties was observed. Hardness tests give higher values when performed in (001) planes rather than in planes parallel to the c-axis. Moreover cracks pattern around the indentation follows preferential orientation in planes parallel to the c-axis whereas a classical ''four-cracks'' pattern is observed in the (001) planes. It has been possible to show the crucial role played by the 211-particles in the deviating mechanism of cracks and the relevance of the 211-particle distribution high homogeneity in the material.

Analysis of Experimental Conditions for Simultaneous Measurements of Transport and Magnetotransport Coefficients of High Temperature Superconductors

Experimental conditions for simultaneous measurements of transport coefficients of high temperature superconductors in zero and non-zero magnetic fields are analysed. Test measurements of the thermal conductivity, the thermoelectric power and the Nernst - Ettingshausen effect of a textured Bi2212 sample are reported in an external magnetic field of 2T. Errors related to parameters of the thermocouple used and to the spurious heat flows are discussed for a new experimental set-up built based on a closed cycle helium refrigerator. Possible optimising of experimental conditions is suggested.

Intergranular and intragranular properties of superconducting multifilamentary Bi 2223 Ag tapes : comparison of electrical transport and magnetic measurement methods

Several experimental techniques have been used in order to characterize the properties of multifilamentary Bi-2223 / Ag tapes. Pristine samples were investigated by electrical resistivity, current-voltage characteristics and DC magnetic moment measurements. Much emphasis is placed on comparing transport (direct) and magnetic (indirect) methods for determining the critical current density as well as the irreversibility line and resolving usual lacks of consistency due to the difference in measurement techniques and data analysis. The effect of an applied magnetic field, with various strengths and directions, is also studied and discussed. Next, the same combination of experiments was performed on bent tapes in order to bring out relevant information regarding the intergranular coupling. A modified Brandt model taking into account different types of defects within the superconducting filaments is proposed to reconciliate magnetic and transport data.

Anisotropic AC Behavior of Multifilamentary Bi-2223/Ag Tapes

In this communication, we report on the anisotropy of the superconducting properties of multifilamentary Bi-based tapes experimentally investigated by AC magnetic susceptibility measurements. The susceptibility $χ= χ' - j χ''$ was measured using a commercial system and a couple of orthogonal pick-up coils. The $χ''$ vs. temperature curves were shown to exhibit two peaks. The smaller of the peaks, occurring near T = 72K, was only visible for particular field directions and within a given frequency window. Such results point out the role played by the phase difference between the applied magnetic field and the internal magnetic field seen by the filaments.

Classical technical analysis of Latin American market indices. Correlations in Latin American currencies (ARS, CLP, MXP) exchange rates with respect to DEM, GBP, JPY and USD

The classical technical analysis methods of financial time series based on the moving average and momentum is recalled. Illustrations use the IBM share price and Latin American (Argentinian MerVal, Brazilian Bovespa and Mexican IPC) market indices. We have also searched for scaling ranges and exponents in exchange rates between Latin American currencies ($ARS$, $CLP$, $MXP$) and other major currencies $DEM$, $GBP$, $JPY$, $USD$, and $SDR$s. We have sorted out correlations and anticorrelations of such exchange rates with respect to $DEM$, $GBP$, $JPY$ and $USD$. They indicate a very complex or speculative behavior.

Magnetically controlled ballistic deposition. A model of polydisperse granular packing

The flow and deposition of polydisperse granular materials is simulated through the Magnetic Diffusion Limited Aggregation (MDLA) model. The random walk undergone by an entity in the MDLA model is modified such that the trajectories are ballistic in nature, leading to a magnetically controlled ballistic deposition (MBD) model. This allows to obtain important ingredients about a difficult problem that of the nonequilibrium segregation of polydisperse sandpiles and heterogeneous adsorption of a binary distribution of particles which can interact with each other and with an external field. Our detailed results from many simulations of MBD clusters on a two dimensional triangular lattice above a flat surface in a vertical finite size box for binary systems indicates intriguing variations of the density, ''magnetization'', types of clusters, and fractal dimensions. We derive the field and grain interaction dependent susceptibility and compressibility. We deduce a completely new phase diagram for binary granular piles and discuss its complexity inherent to different grain competition and cluster growth probabilities.

Limit current density in 2D metallic granular packings

The electrical properties 2D of packed metallic pentagons have been studied. The characterization of such metallic pentagon heaps (like $i-V$ measurements) has been achieved and has allowed to point out two distinct conduction regimes. They are separated by a transition line along which the system exhibits a memory effect behavior due to the irreversible improvement of electrical contacts between pentagons (hot spots). A limit current density has been found.

Deterministic and stochastic influences on Japan and US stock and foreign exchange markets. A Fokker-Planck approach

The evolution of the probability distributions of Japan and US major market indices, NIKKEI 225 and NASDAQ composite index, and $JPY/DEM$ and $DEM/USD$ currency exchange rates is described by means of the Fokker-Planck equation (FPE). In order to distinguish and quantify the deterministic and random influences on these financial time series we perform a statistical analysis of their increments $Δx(Δ(t))$ distribution functions for different time lags $Δ(t)$. From the probability distribution functions at various $Δ(t)$, the Fokker-Planck equation for $p(Δx(t), Δ(t))$ is explicitly derived. It is written in terms of a drift and a diffusion coefficient. The Kramers-Moyal coefficients, are estimated and found to have a simple analytical form, thus leading to a simple physical interpretation for both drift $D^{(1)}$ and diffusion $D^{(2)}$ coefficients. The Markov nature of the indices and exchange rates is shown and an apparent difference in the NASDAQ $D^{(2)}$ is pointed out.

Time correlations and 1/f behavior in backscattering radar reflectivity measurements from cirrus cloud ice fluctuations

The state of the atmosphere is governed by the classical laws of fluid motion and exhibits correlations in various spatial and temporal scales. These correlations are crucial to understand the short and long term trends in climate. Cirrus clouds are important ingredients of the atmospheric boundary layer. To improve future parameterization of cirrus clouds in climate models, it is important to understand the cloud properties and how they change within the cloud. We study correlations in the fluctuations of radar signals obtained at isodepths of winter and fall cirrus clouds. In particular we focus on three quantities: (i) the backscattering cross-section, (ii) the Doppler velocity and (iii) the Doppler spectral width. They correspond to the physical coefficients used in Navier Stokes equations to describe flows, i.e. bulk modulus, viscosity, and thermal conductivity. In all cases we find that power-law time correlations exist with a crossover between regimes at about 3 to 5 min. We also find that different type of correlations, including 1/f behavior, characterize the top and the bottom layers and the bulk of the clouds. The underlying mechanisms for such correlations are suggested to originate in ice nucleation and crystal growth processes.
