Valence changes associated with the metal-insulator transition in Bi$_{1-x}$La$_x$NiO$_3$

Perovskite-type BiNiO$_3$ is an insulating antiferromagnet in which a charge disproportionation occurs at the Bi site. La substitution for Bi suppresses the charge disproportionation and makes the system metallic. We have measured the photoemission and x-ray absorption (XAS) spectra of Bi$_{1-x}$La$_{x}$NiO$_{3}$ to investigate how the electronic structure changes with La doping. From Ni $2p$ XAS, we observed an increase of the valence of Ni from 2+ toward 3+. Combined with the core-level photoemission study, it was found that the average valence of Bi remains $\sim 4+$ and that the Ni valence behaves as $\sim (2+x)+$, that is, La substitution results in hole doping at the Ni sites. In the valence-band photoemission spectra, we observed a Fermi cutoff for $x>0$, consistent with the metallic behavior of the La-doped compounds. The Ni $2p$ XAS, Ni $2p$ core-level photoemission, and valence-band photoemission spectra were analyzed by configuration-interaction cluster-model calculation, and the spectral line shapes were found to be consistent with the gradual Ni$^{2+} \to$ Ni$^{3+}$ valence change.

Pressure/temperature/substitution-induced melting of A-site charge disproportionation in Bi_(1-x)La_(x)NiO_3 (0 =< x =< 0.5)

Metal-insulator transitions strongly coupled with lattice were found in Bi1-xLaxNiO3. Synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction revealed that pressure (P ~ 3 GPa, T = 300 K), temperature (T ~ 340 K, x = 0.05), and La-substitution (x ~ 0.075, T = 300 K) caused the similar structural change from a triclinic (insulating) to an orthorhombic (metallic) symmetry, suggesting melting of the A-site charge disproportionation. Comparing crystal structure and physical properties with the other ANiO3 series, an electronic state of the metallic phase can be described as [A3+Ld, Ni2+L1-d], where a ligand-hole L contributes to a conductivity. We depicted a schematic P-T phase diagram of BiNiO3 including a critical point (3 GPa, 300 K) and an inhomogeneous region, which implies universality of ligand-hole dynamics in ANiO3 (A = Bi, Pr, Nd,...).

Magnetic Phase Diagram of the Hole-doped Ca$_{2-x}$Na$_{x}$CuO$_{2}$Cl$_{2}$ Cuprate Superconductor

We report on the magnetic phase diagram of a hole-doped cuprate Ca$_{2-x}$Na$_{x}$CuO$_{2}$Cl$_{2}$, which is free from buckling of CuO$_2$ planes, determined by muon spin rotation and relaxation. It is characterized by a quasi-static spin glass-like phase over a range of sodium concentration ($0.05\leq x\leq 0.12$), which is held between long range antiferromagnetic (AF) phase ($x\leq 0.02$) and superconducting phase where the system is non-magnetic for $x\geq 0.15$. The obtained phase diagram qualitatively agrees well with that commonly found for hole-doped high-\tc cuprates, strongly suggesting that the incomplete suppression of the AF order for $x>0.02$ is an essential feature of the hole-doped cuprates.

A `checkerboard' electronic crystal state in lightly hole-doped Ca_{2-x}Na_{x}CuO_{2}Cl_{2}

The phase diagram of hole-doped copper oxides shows four different electronic phases existing at zero temperature. Familiar among these are the Mott insulator, high-transition-temperature superconductor and metallic phases. A fourth phase, ofunknown identity, occurs at light doping along the zero-temperature bound of the `pseudogap' regime. This regime is rich in peculiar electronic phenomena, prompting numerous proposals that it contains some form of hidden electronic order. Here we present low-temperature electronic structure imaging studies of a lightly hole-doped copper oxide: Ca_{2-x}Na_{x}CuO_{2}Cl_{2}. Tunnelling spectroscopy (at energies |E|>100 meV) reveals electron extraction probabilities greatly exceeding those for injection, as anticipated for a doped Mott insulator. However, for |E|<100 meV, the spectrum exhibits a V-shaped energy gap centred on E=0. States within this gap undergo intense spatial modulations, with the spatial correlations of a four CuO_{2}-unit-cell square checkerboard, independent of energy. Intricate atomic-scale electronic structure variations also exist within the checkerboard. These data are consistent with an unanticipated crystalline electronic state, possibly the hidden electronic order, existing in the zero-temperature pseudogap regime of Ca_{2-x}Na_{x}CuO_{2}Cl_{2}.

Charge dynamics of Ca_{2-x}Na_{x}CuO_{2}Cl_{2} as a correlated electron system with the ideal tetragonal lattice

We report the reflectivity and the resistivity measurement of Ca_{2-x}Na_{x}CuO_{2}Cl_{2} (CNCOC), which has a single-CuO2-plane lattice with no orthorhombic distortion. The doping dependence of the in-plane optical conductivity spectra for CNCOC is qualitatively the same to those of other cuprates, but a slight difference between CNCOC and LSCO, i.e., the absence of the 1.5 eV peak in CNCOC, can be attributed to the smaller charge-stripe instability in CNCOC. The temperature dependence of the optical onductivity spectra of CNCOC has been analyzed both by the two-component model (Drude+Lorentzian) and by the one-component model (extended-Drude analysis). The latter analysis gives a universal trend of the scattering rate Gamma(omega) with doping. It was also found that Gamma(omega) shows a saturation behavior at high frequencies, whose origin is the same as that of resistivity saturation at high temperatures.

Missing Quasiparticles and the Chemical Potential Puzzle in the Doping Evolution of the Cuprate Superconductors

The evolution of Ca$_{2-x}$Na$_{x}$CuO$_{2}$Cl$_{2}$ from Mott insulator to superconductor was studied using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. By measuring both the excitations near the Fermi energy as well as non-bonding states, we tracked the doping dependence of the electronic structure and the chemical potential with unprecedented precision. Our work reveals failures in the conventional quasiparticle theory, including the broad lineshapes of the insulator and the apparently paradoxical shift of the chemical potential within the Mott gap. To resolve this, we develop a model where the quasiparticle is vanishingly small at half filling and grows upon doping, allowing us to unify properties such as the dispersion and Fermi wavevector with the behavior of the chemical potential.

Imaging nano-scale electronic inhomogeneity in lightly doped Mott insulator Ca_{2-x}Na_{x}CuO_{2}Cl_{2}

The spatial variation of electronic states was imaged in the lightly doped Mott insulator Ca_{2-x}Na_{x}CuO_{2}Cl_{2} using scanning tunneling microscopy / spectroscopy (STM/STS). We observed nano-scale domains with a high local density of states within an insulating background. The observed domains have a characteristic length scale of 2 nm (~4-5a, a:lattice constant) with preferred orientations along the tetragonal [100] direction. We argue that such spatially inhomogeneous electronic states are inherent to slightly doped Mott insulators and play an important role for the insulator to metal transition.

NMR characterization of spin-1/2 alternating antiferromagnetic chains in the high-pressure phase of (VO)2P2O7

Local-susceptibility measurements via the NMR shifts of $^{31}$P and $^{51}$V nuclei in the high-pressure phase of (VO)$_{2}$P$_{2}$O$_{7}$ confirmed the existence of a unique alternating antiferromagnetic chain with a zero-field spin gap of 34 K. The $^{31}$P nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate scales with the uniform spin susceptibility below about 15 K which shows that the temperature dependence of both the static and dynamical spin susceptibilities becomes identical at temperatures not far below the spin-gap energy.

Fully Gapped Single-Particle Excitations in the Lightly Doped Cuprates

The low-energy excitations of the lightly doped cuprates were studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. A finite gap was measured over the entire Brillouin zone, including along the d_{x^2 - y^2} nodal line. This effect was observed to be generic to the normal states of numerous cuprates, including hole-doped La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} and Ca_{2-x}Na_{x}CuO_{2}Cl_{2} and electron-doped Nd_{2-x}Ce_{x}CuO_{4}. In all compounds, the gap appears to close with increasing carrier doping. We consider various scenarios to explain our results, including the possible effects of chemical disorder, electronic inhomogeneity, and a competing phase.

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of Na-doped Ca2CuO2Cl2 single crystals: Fingerprints of a magnetic insulator in a heavily underdoped superconductor

Electronic evolution from an antiferromagnet to a high-Tc superconductor is revealed by angle-resolved photoemission experiments on tetragonal Ca(1.9)Na(0.1)CuO(2)Cl(2) single crystals, which were successfully grown for the first time under high pressures. In this underdoped superconductor, we found clear fingerprints of the parent insulator: a shadow band and a large pseudo-gap. These observations are most likely described by a "chemical potential shift", which contrasts clearly with the prevailing wisdom of the "pinned chemical potential" learned from the prototype La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4), demonstrating that the route to a high-Tc superconductor is not unique.

Spin-Trimer Antiferromagnetism in La$_4$Cu$_3$MoO$_{12}$

La$_4$Cu$_3$MoO$_{12}$ is a cluster antiferromagnet where copper spin-1/2 form a network of st rongly coupled spin-trimers. The magnetic properties of this material have bee n examined using magnetic neutron scattering. At low temperatures, excitations from the ground state are observed at 7.5(3) meV and 132.5(5) meV. An additio nal peak in the neutron scattering spectrum, which appears at 125.0(5) meV on heating is ascribed to a transition between excited states. The wave-vector an d temperature-dependence of the inelastic magnetic scattering cross section is consistent with intra-trimer transitions. Magnetic neutron diffraction reveal s antiferromagnetic order below T$_N$=2.6 K that doubles the unit cell along t he {\bf a} direction. The ordered magnetic structure is described as inter-tri mer order where spin correlations within trimers are controlled by the strong intra-trimer interactions. Combining the information derived from elastic and inelastic magnetic neutron scattering with group theoretical analysis, a consi stent set of intra-trimer interactions and ordered magnetic structures are der ived. The experiment provides a simple worked example of magnetism associated with inter-atomic composite degrees of freedom in the extreme quantum limit.

Modeling of the Magnetic Susceptibilities of the Ambient- and High-Pressure Phases of (VO)_{2}P_{2}O_{7}

The magnetic susceptibilities chi versus temperature T of powders and single crystals of the ambient-pressure (AP) and high-pressure (HP) phases of (VO)_{2}P_{2}O_{7} are analyzed using an accurate theoretical prediction of chi(T, J1, J2) for the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic alternating-exchange (J1, J2) Heisenberg chain. The results are consistent with recent models with two distinct types of alternating-exchange chains in the AP phase and a single type in the HP phase. The spin gap for each type of chain is derived from the respective set of two fitted alternating exchange constants and the one-magnon dispersion relation for each of the two types of chains in the AP phase is predicted. The influences of interchain coupling on the derived intrachain exchange constants, spin gaps, and dispersion relations are estimated using a mean-field approximation for the interchain coupling. The accuracies of the spin gaps obtained using fits to the low-T chi(T) data by theoretical low-T approximations are determined. The results of these studies are compared with previously reported estimates of the exchange couplings and spin gaps in the AP and HP phases and with the magnon dispersion relations in the AP phase measured previously using inelastic neutron scattering.

Magnetic Susceptibilities of Spin-1/2 Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Ladders and Applications to Ladder Oxide Compounds

A comprehensive theoretical and experimental study is presented of the magnetic susceptibility versus temperature χ(T) of spin S = 1/2 two- and three-leg Heisenberg ladders and ladder oxide compounds. Extensive quantum Monte Carlo simulations of χ(T) were carried out for both isolated and coupled two-leg ladders with spatially anisotropic intraladder exchange. Accurate fits to these and related literature QMC data were obtained. We have also calculated the one- and two-magnon dispersion relations and the dynamical spin structure factor for anisotropic isolated 2 x 12 ladders. The exchange constants in the two-leg ladder compound SrCu2O3 are estimated from LDA+U calculations. We report the detailed crystal structure of SrCu2O3 and of the three-leg ladder compound Sr2Cu3O5. New experimental χ(T) data are reported for the two-leg ladder cuprates SrCu2O3 and LaCuO_{2.5}, and for the (nominally) two-leg ladder vanadates CaV2O5 and MgV2O5. The new and literature χ(T) data for these compounds and for Sr2Cu3O5 are modeled using our QMC χ(T) simulation fits, and the exchange coupling constants between the spins-1/2 are thereby estimated for each material. The surpisingly strong spatial anisotropy of the bilinear intraladder exchange constants in the cuprate compounds is discussed together with the results of other experiments sensitive to this anisotropy. Recent theoretical predictions are discussed including those which indicate that a four-spin cyclic exchange interaction within a Cu4 plaquette is important to determining the magnetic properties and which can significantly influence the exchange interactions estimated from χ(T) data assuming the presence of only bilinear exchange.

63Cu NQR evidence of dimensional crossover to anisotropic 2d regime in S= 1/2 three-leg ladder Sr2Cu3O5

We probed spin-spin correlations up to 725 K with 63Cu NQR in the S= 1/2 three-leg ladder Sr2Cu3O5. We present experimental evidence that below 300 K, weak inter-ladder coupling causes dimensional crossover of the spin-spin correlation length ξfrom quasi-1d (ξ~ 1/T) to anisotropic 2d regime (ξ\~ exp[2πρ_{s}/T], where 2πρ_{s} = 290 +/- 30 K is the effective spin stiffness). This is the first experimental verification of the renormalized classical behavior of the anisotropic non-linear sigma model in 2d, which has been recently proposed for the striped phase in high T_{c} cuprates.

Disappearance of the Spin Gap in a Zn doped 2-Leg Ladder Compound Sr(Cu1-xZnx)2O3

An inelastic neutron scattering study was performed on a Zn-substituted spin-1/2 Heisenberg 2-leg ladder compound Sr(Cu1-xZnx)2O3 (x < 0.04) to investigate nonmagnetic impurity effects on the quantum spin system with a large spin gap of about 400 K. The magnitude of the spin gap was found to be independent of Zn concentration, 33 meV, while the integrated magnetic scattering which corresponds to the singlet-triplet excitation decreased monotonically with increasing x. On account of the total-sum rule, this result supports the existence of a finite in-gap density of states at E = 0 which was suggested from the T-linear magnetic specific heat.
