Influence of nucleonic motion in Relativistic Fermi Gas inclusive responses

Impulsive hadronic descriptions of electroweak processes in nuclei involve two distinctly different elements: one stems from the nuclear many-body physics --- the medium --- which is rather similar for the various inclusive response functions, and the other embodies the responses of the hadrons themselves to the electroweak probe and varies with the channel selected. In this letter we investigate within the context of the relativistic Fermi gas in both the quasi-elastic and $N\toΔ$ regimes the interplay between these two elements. Specifically, we focus on expansions in the one small parameter in the problem, namely, the momentum of a nucleon in the initial wave function compared with the hadronic scale, the nucleon mass. Both parity-conserving and -violating inclusive responses are studied and the interplay between longitudinal ($L$) and transverse ($T$ and $T'$) contributions is highlighted.

Bosonization of the pairing Hamiltonian

The problem of the pairing interaction is dealt with even Grassmann variables in the hamiltonian framework. Eigenfunctions of given energy, seniority and zero third component of angular momentum are given in terms of single particle and collective bosonic fields.

A composite bosons minimal basis for the pairing Hamiltonian

The pairing interaction among identical nucleons in a single-particle level is treated in the hamiltonian formalism using even Grassmann variables. A minimal (irreducible) basis having a remarkable symmetry property is set up using composite, commuting variables with a finite index of nilpotency. Eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of given energy, seniority and zero third component of the angular momentum of the pairing hamiltonian are then found. The eigenvectors, which cannot be cast solely in terms of composite bosons with angular momentum zero and two, are expanded in the minimal basis with coefficients analytically expressed in terms of a generalized hypergeometric function.

Relativistic effects in electromagnetic nuclear responses in the quasi-elastic delta region

A new non-relativistic expansion in terms of the nucleon's momentum inside nuclear matter of the current for isobar electro-excitation from the nucleon is performed. Being exact with respect to the transferred energy and momentum, this yields new current operators which retain important aspects of relativity not taken into account in the traditional non-relativistic reductions. The transition current thus obtained differs from the leading order of the traditional expansion by simple multiplicative factors. These depend on the momentum and energy transfer and can be easily included together with relativistic kinematics in non-relativistic, many-body models of isobar electro-excitation in nuclei. The merits of the new current are tested by comparing with the unexpanded electromagnetic nuclear responses in the isobar peak computed in a relativistic Fermi gas framework. The sensitivity of the relativistic responses to the isobar's magnetic, electric and Coulomb form factors and the finite width of the isobar is analyzed.

Strange form factors of the proton: a new analysis of the neutrino (antineutrino) data of the BNL-734 experiment

We consider ratios of elastic neutrino(antineutrino)-proton cross sections measured by the Brookhaven BNL-734 experiment and use them to obtain the neutral current (NC) over charged current (CC) neutrino-antineutrino asymmetry. We discuss the sensitivity of these ratios and of the asymmetry to the electric, magnetic and axial strange form factors of the nucleon and to the axial cutoff mass M_A. We show that the effects of the nuclear structure and interactions on the asymmetry and, in general, on ratios of cross sections are negligible. We find some restrictions on the possible values of the parameters characterizing the strange form factors. We show that a precise measurement of the neutrino-antineutrino asymmetry would allow the extraction of the axial and vector magnetic strange form factors in a model independent way. The neutrino-antineutrino asymmetry turns out to be almost independent on the electric strange form factor and on the axial cutoff mass.

Relativistic Effects in Electromagnetic Meson-Exchange Currents for One-Particle Emission Reactions

Following recent studies of non-relativistic reductions of the single-nucleon electromagnetic current operator, here we extend the treatment to include meson exchange current operators. We focus on one-particle emission electronuclear reactions. In contrast to the traditional scheme where approximations are made for the transferred momentum, transferred energy and momenta of the initial-state struck nucleons, we treat the problem exactly for the transferred energy and momentum, thus obtaining new current operators which retain important aspects of relativity not taken into account in the traditional non-relativistic reductions. We calculate the matrix elements of our current operators between the Fermi sphere and a particle-hole state for several choices of kinematics. We present a comparison between our results using approximate current operators and those obtained using the fully-relativistic operators, as well as with results obtained using the traditional non-relativistic current operators.

The ratio of p and n yields in NC neutrino(antineutrino)-nucleus scattering and strange form factors of the nucleon

We calculate the ratio of proton and neutron yields in NC induced neutrino(antineutrino)-nucleus inelastic scattering at neutrino energies of about 1 GeV. We show that this ratio depends very weakly on the nuclear models employed and that in the neutrino and antineutrino cases the ratios have different sensitivity to the axial and vector strange form factors; moreover, the ratio of antineutrino--nucleus cross sections turns out to be rather sensitive to the electric strange form factor. We demonstrate that measurements of these ratios will allow to get information on the strange form factors of the nucleon in the region Q > 0.4 GeV^2.

Relativistic y-scaling and the Coulomb sum rule in nuclei

In this paper dividing factors GL and GT are constructed for the longitudinal and transverse responses of the relativistic Fermi gas in such a way that the reduced responses so obtained scale. These factors parallel another dividing factor studied previously, HL, that yields a (different) reduced response which fulfills the Coulomb sum rule. GL, GT and HL are all found to be only very weakly model-dependent, thus providing essentially universal dividing factors. To explore the residual degree of dependence which remains, the scaling and sum rule properties of several specific models have been considered. It is seen that the relativistic Fermi gas (by construction) and also typical shell-model reduced responses successfully scale and satisfy the Coulomb sum rule, as do experimental results at medium to high momentum transfers. On the other hand, it is observed that the quantum hadrodynamic model does so only if interaction effects become weaker with increasing momentum transfer, as predicted in the most recent versions of that model.

Inelastic neutrino and antineutrino scattering on nuclei and ``strangeness'' of the nucleon

Possibilities to extract information on the strange form factors of the nucleon from neutrino (antineutrino) inelastic scattering on nuclei, in an energy range from 200 MeV to 1 GeV and more, are investigated in detail. All calculations are performed within two relativistic independent particle models (Fermi gas and shell model); the final state interactions of the ejected nucleon are taken into account through relativistic optical model potentials. We have shown that the values of the cross sections significantly depend on the nuclear model (especially in the lower energy range). However the NC/CC neutrino-antineutrino asymmetry in a medium--high energy range shows a rather small dependence on the model and allows to disentangle different values of the parameters that characterize the strange form factors. We have calculated also the ratio of the cross sections for inelastic NC scattering of neutrinos on nuclei, with the emission of a proton and of a neutron. Our calculations show that this ratio depends rather weakly on the nuclear model and confirm previous conclusions on the rather strong dependence of this ratio upon the axial strange form factors.

Bosonization and even Grassmann variables

A new approach to bosonization in relativistic field theories and many-body systems, based on the use of fermionic composites as integration variables in the Berezin integral defining the partition function of the system, is tested. The method is applied to the study of a simplified version of the BCS model.

Probing Nucleon Strangeness with Neutrinos: Nuclear Model Dependences

The extraction of the nucleon's strangeness axial charge, Delta_s, from inclusive, quasielastic neutral current neutrino cross sections is studied within the framework of the plane-wave impulse approximation. We find that the value of Delta_s can depend significantly on the choice of nuclear model used in analyzing the quasielastic cross section. This model-dependence may be reduced by one order of magnitude when Delta_s is extracted from the ratio of total proton to neutron yields. We apply this analysis to the interpretation of low-energy neutrino cross sections and arrive at a nuclear theory uncertainty of plus/minus 0.03 on the value of Delta_s expected to be determined from the ratio of proton and neutron yields measured by the LSND collaboration. This error compares favorably with estimates of the SU(3)-breaking uncertainty in the value of Delta_s extracted from inclusive, polarized deep-inelastic structure function measurements. We also point out several general features of the quasielastic neutral current neutrino cross section and compare them with the analogous features in inclusive, quasielastic electron scattering.

Relativistic Hamiltonians in many-body theories

We discuss the description of a many-body nuclear system using Hamiltonians that contain the nucleon relativistic kinetic energy and potentials with relativistic corrections. Through the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation, the field theoretical problem of interacting nucleons and mesons is mapped to an equivalent one in terms of relativistic potentials, which are then expanded at some order in 1/m_N. The formalism is applied to the Hartree problem in nuclear matter, showing how the results of the relativistic mean field theory can be recovered over a wide range of densities.

Parity-violating longitudinal response

The longitudinal quasielastic parity-violating electron scattering response is explored within the context of a model that builds antisymmetrized RPA-HF correlations on a relativistic Fermi gas basis. The large sensitivity to nuclear dynamics of this observable, found in previous studies where only pionic correlations were included, is shown to survive in the present model where the effects from pion, rho, sigma and omega exchange in a version of the Bonn potential are incorporated. Through an intricate diagrammatic cancellation/filtration mechanism the longitudinal parity-violating response turns out to be close to the one obtained in first-order perturbation theory with the pion alone. Finally, in accord with our previous work, the parity-violating response is seen to display appreciable sensitivity to the electric strangeness content of the nucleon, especially at high momentum transfer.

The Charge Response of a Meson-Correlated Relativistic Fermi Gas

The quasielastic longitudinal electromagnetic response function R_L is studied within the context of a model that extends our previous investigations of pionic correlations and currents. Four mesons are now employed (pion, rho, sigma and omega, via the Bonn potential) and the many-body dynamics are extended to the full random-phase approximation built upon a Hartree-Fock basis. Wherever possible the Lorentz covariance of the problem is respected. The first three energy-weighted moments of the reduced response are computed, namely, the zeroth moment (Coulomb sum rule), the first moment (related to the position of the quasielastic peak) and the second moment (related to the peak width or variance). We discuss how with a modest downward adjustment of the Fermi momentum it is possible to obtain the expected zeroth and second moments; this implies that the nuclear system has a lower density than that required when using the free relativistic Fermi gas and accordingly that the interaction effects are weaker than one might initially find.

Parity-Violating Electron Scattering from the Pion-Correlated Relativistic Fermi Gas

Parity-violating quasielastic electron scattering is studied within the context of the relativistic Fermi gas and its extensions to include the effects of pionic correlations and meson-exchange currents. The work builds on previous studies using the same model; here the part of the parity-violating asymmetry that contains axial-vector hadronic currents is developed in detail using those previous studies and a link is provided to the transverse vector-isovector response. Various integrated observables are constructed from the differential asymmetry. These include an asymmetry averaged over the quasielastic peak, as well as the difference of the asymmetry integrated to the left and right of the peak -- the latter is shown to be optimal for bringing out the nature of the pionic correlations. Special weighted integrals involving the differential asymmetry and electromagnetic cross section, based on the concepts of y-scaling and sum rules, are constructed and shown to be suited to studies of the single-nucleon form factor content in the problem, in particular, to determinations of the isovector/axial-vector and electric strangeness form factors. Comparisons are also made with recent predictions made on the basis of relativistic mean-field theory.

The Pion in Electromagnetic and Weak Neutral Current Nuclear Response Functions

The impact of pionic correlations and meson--exchange currents in determining the (vector) response functions for electroweak quasielastic lepton scattering from nuclei is discussed. The approach taken builds on previous work where the Fermi gas model is used to maintain consistency in treating forces and currents (gauge invariance) and to provide a Lorentz covariant framework. Results obtained in first-order perturbation theory are compared with infinite-order summation schemes (HF and RPA) and found to provide quite successful approximations for the quasielastic response functions. The role of pionic correlations in hardening the responses R_L and R_T is investigated in some detail, including studies of the relative importance of central and tensor pieces of the force and of exchange and self-energy diagrams; in addition, their role in significantly modifying the longitudinal parity-violating response R_{AV}^L is explored. The MEC are shown to provide a small, but non-negligible, contribution in determining the vector responses.
