Leptonic Dynamical Yukawa Couplings

A dynamical origin of the Yukawa couplings is a promising scenario to explain the flavour puzzle. The focus of this letter is set on the role of the neutrino Majorana character: when an $O(2)_{N_R}$ flavour symmetry acts on the right-handed neutrino sector, the minimum of the scalar potential allows for large mixing angles -in contrast to the simplest quark case- and predicts a maximal Majorana phase. This leads to a strong correlation between neutrino mass hierarchy and mixing pattern. Realistic solutions point to the existence of three heavy right-handed neutrinos.

Neutrino Mixing and Masses from a Minimum Principle

We analyze the structure of quark and lepton mass matrices under the hypothesis that they are determined from a minimum principle applied to a generic potential invariant under the $\left[SU(3)\right]^5\otimes \mathcal O(3)$ flavor symmetry, acting on Standard Model fermions and right-handed neutrinos. Unlike the quark case, we show that hierarchical masses for charged leptons are naturally accompanied by degenerate Majorana neutrinos with one mixing angle close to maximal, a second potentially large, a third one necessarily small, and one maximal relative Majorana phase. Adding small perturbations the predicted structure for the neutrino mass matrix is in excellent agreement with present observations and could be tested in the near future via neutrino-less double beta decay and cosmological measurements. The generalization of these results to arbitrary sew-saw models is also discussed.

Flavour with a Light Dynamical "Higgs Particle"

The Higgs-fermion couplings are sensitive probes of possible new physics behind a stable light Higgs particle. It is then essential to identify the flavour pattern of those interactions. We consider the case in which a strong dynamics lies behind a light Higgs, and explore the implications within the Minimal Flavour Violation ansatz. The dominant effects on flavour-changing Higgs-fermion couplings stem in this context from operators with mass dimension <6, and we analyze all relevant chiral operators up to that order, including loop-corrections induced by 4-dimensional ones. Bounds on the operator coefficients are derived from a plethora of low-energy flavour transitions, providing a guideline on which flavour-changing Higgs interactions may be open to experimental scrutiny. In particular, the coefficient of a genuinely CP-odd operator is only softly constrained and therefore its impact is potentially interesting.

A Light Dynamical Scalar Boson

With the discovery of a scalar resonance at ATLAS and CMS, the understanding of the electroweak symmetry breaking origin seems a much closer goal. A strong dynamics at relatively low scales is still a good candidate. In this talk, the complete effective Lagrangian up to d < 6 will be presented, both for the gauge and the flavour sectors. Interesting features in the flavour phenomenology will be discussed.

On the Potential of Leptonic Minimal Flavour Violation

Minimal Flavour Violation can be realized in several ways in the lepton sector due to the possibility of Majorana neutrino mass terms. We derive the scalar potential for the fields whose background values are the Yukawa couplings, for the simplest See-Saw model with just two right-handed neutrinos, and explore its minima. The Majorana character plays a distinctive role: the minimum of the potential allows for large mixing angles -in contrast to the simplest quark case- and predicts a maximal Majorana phase. This points in turn to a strong correlation between neutrino mass hierarchy and mixing pattern.

Minimal Flavour Violation with Strong Higgs Dynamics

We develop a variant of the Minimal Flavour Violation ansatz for the case of a strongly interacting heavy-Higgs boson sector. The tower of effective operators differs from that for a Higgs system in the linear regime, and the new operators obtained at leading order include a CP-odd one. We investigate the impact of these operators on Delta F=1 and Delta F=2 observables, demonstrating that the non-linear scenario may have an interesting impact on the anomalies in present data.

Anomalous Higgs Couplings at the LHC

We discuss the impact and potential discovery of physics beyond the Standard Model, coupling to the Higgs sector, at the LHC. Using a model-independent effective Lagrangian approach, pure Higgs and Higgs-gauge operators are analyzed, and their origin in terms of tree-level exchange of unknown heavy messengers is systematically derived. It is demonstrated that early signals at the LHC may result from a simultaneous modification of Higgs-fermion and Higgs-gauge boson couplings induced by those operators, pointing towards singlet scalar or a triplet vector -- barring fine-tuned options. Of course, the Higgs discovery itself will also be affected by such new couplings. With increasing statistics, the remaining options can be discriminated from each other. On the other hand, the discovery of a new scalar doublet may require technology beyond the LHC, since the Higgs self-couplings have to be measured. Our conclusions are based on the complete set of tree-level decompositions of the effective operators unbiased by a specific model.

On The Potential of Minimal Flavour Violation

Assuming the Minimal Flavour Violation hypothesis, we derive the general scalar potential for fields whose background values are the Yukawa couplings. We analyze the minimum of the potential and discuss the fine-tuning required to dynamically generate the mass hierarchies and the mixings between different quark generations. Two main cases are considered, corresponding to Yukawa interactions being effective operators of dimension five or six (or, equivalently, resulting from bi-fundamental and fundamental scalar fields, respectively). At the renormalizable and classical level, no mixing is naturally induced from dimension five Yukawa operators. On the contrary, from dimension six Yukawa operators one mixing angle and a strong mass hierarchy among the generations result.

Dark Coupling and Gauge Invariance

We study a coupled dark energy-dark matter model in which the energy-momentum exchange is proportional to the Hubble expansion rate. The inclusion of its perturbation is required by gauge invariance. We derive the linear perturbation equations for the gauge invariant energy density contrast and velocity of the coupled fluids, and we determine the initial conditions. The latter turn out to be adiabatic for dark energy, when assuming adiabatic initial conditions for all the standard fluids. We perform a full Monte Carlo Markov Chain likelihood analysis of the model, using WMAP 7-year data.

Minimal Flavour Seesaw Models

We explore realizations of minimal flavour violation (MFV) for the lepton sector. We find that it can be realized within those seesaw models where a separation of the lepton number and lepton flavour violating scales can be achieved, such as type II and inverse seesaw models. We present in particular a simple implementation of the MFV hypothesis which differs in nature from those previously discussed. It allows to reconstruct the flavour structure of the model from the values of the light neutrino masses and mixing parameters, even in the presence of CP-violating phases. Experimentally reachable predictions for rare processes such as mu --> e gamma are given.

Large gauge invariant non-standard neutrino interactions

Theories beyond the Standard Model must necessarily respect its gauge symmetry. This implies strict constraints on the possible models of non-standard neutrino interactions, which we analyze. The focus is set on the effective low-energy dimension six and eight operators involving four leptons, decomposing them according to all possible tree-level mediators, as a guide for model building. The new couplings are required to have sizeable strength, while processes involving four charged leptons are required to be suppressed. For non-standard interactions in matter, only diagonal tau-neutrino interactions can escape these requirements and can be allowed to result from dimension six operators. Large non-standard neutrino interactions from dimension eight operators alone are phenomenologically allowed in all flavour channels and shown to require at least two new mediator particles. The new couplings must obey general cancellation conditions both at the dimension six and eight levels, which result from expressing the operators obtained from the mediator analysis in terms of a complete basis of operators. We illustrate with one example how to apply this information to model building.

Dark coupling

The two dark sectors of the universe - dark matter and dark energy - may interact with each other. Background and linear density perturbation evolution equations are developed for a generic coupling. We then establish the general conditions necessary to obtain models free from early time non-adiabatic instabilities. As an application, we consider a viable universe in which the interaction strength is proportional to the dark energy density. The scenario does not exhibit "phantom crossing" and is free from instabilities, including early ones. A sizeable interaction strength is compatible with combined WMAP, HST, SN, LSS and H(z) data. Neutrino mass and/or cosmic curvature are allowed to be larger than in non-interacting models. Our analysis sheds light as well on unstable scenarios previously proposed.

$μ\to e γ$ and $τ\to l γ$ decays in the fermion triplet seesaw model

In the framework of the seesaw models with triplets of fermions, we evaluate the decay rates of $μ\to e γ$ and $τ\to l γ$ transitions. We show that although, due to neutrino mass constraints, those rates are in general expected to be well under the present experimental limits, this is not necessarily always the case. Interestingly enough, the observation of one of those decays in planned experiments would nevertheless contradict bounds stemming from present experimental limits on the $μ\to eee$ and $τ\to 3 l$ decay rates. Such detection of radiative decays would therefore imply that there exist sources of lepton flavour violation not associated to triplet fermions.

Low energy effects of neutrino masses

While all models of Majorana neutrino masses lead to the same dimension five effective operator, which does not conserve lepton number, the dimension six operators induced at low energies conserve lepton number and differ depending on the high energy model of new physics. We derive the low-energy dimension six operators which are characteristic of generic Seesaw models, in which neutrino masses result from the exchange of heavy fields which may be either fermionic singlets, fermionic triplets or scalar triplets. The resulting operators may lead to effects observable in the near future, if the coefficients of the dimension five and six operators are decoupled along a certain pattern, which turns out to be common to all models. The phenomenological consequences are explored as well, including their contributions to $μ\to e γ$ and new bounds on the Yukawa couplings for each model.

CP-violation from non-unitary leptonic mixing

A low-energy non-unitary leptonic mixing matrix is a generic effect of a large class of theories accounting for neutrino masses. It is shown how the extra CP-odd phases of a general non-unitary matrix allow for sizeable CP-asymmetries in channels other than those dominant in the standard unitary case. The $ν_μ\to ν_τ$ channel turns out to be an excellent tool to further constrain moduli and phases. Furthermore, we clarify the relationship between our approach and the so-called "non-standard neutrino interactions" schemes: the sensitivities explored here apply as well to such constructions.

Unitarity of the Leptonic Mixing Matrix

We determine the elements of the leptonic mixing matrix, without assuming unitarity, combining data from neutrino oscillation experiments and weak decays. To that end, we first develop a formalism for studying neutrino oscillations in vacuum and matter when the leptonic mixing matrix is not unitary. To be conservative, only three light neutrino species are considered, whose propagation is generically affected by non-unitary effects. Precision improvements within future facilities are discussed as well.

Phenomenology of symmetry breaking from extra dimensions

Motivated by the electroweak hierarchy problem, we consider theories with two extra dimensions in which the four-dimensional scalar fields are components of gauge boson in full space. We explore the Nielsen-Olesen instability for SU(N) on a torus, in the presence of a magnetic background. A field theory approach is developed, computing explicitly the minimum of the complete effective potential, including tri-linear and quartic couplings and determining the symmetries of the stable vacua. We also develop appropriate gauge-fixing terms when both Kaluza-Klein and Landau levels are present and interacting, discussing the interplay between the possible six and four dimensional choices. The equivalence between coordinate dependent and constant Scherk-Schwarz boundary conditions -associated to either continuous or discrete Wilson lines- is analyzed.

The Effective Lagrangian for the Seesaw Model of Neutrino Mass and Leptogenesis

The effective Lagrangian for the seesaw model is derived including effects due to CP violation. Besides the usual dimension-5 operator responsible for light neutrino masses, a dimension-6 operator is obtained. For three or less heavy neutrino generations, the inclusion of both operators is necessary and sufficient for all independent physical parameters of the high-energy seesaw Lagrangian to appear in the low-energy effective theory, including the CP-odd phases relevant for leptogenesis. The dimension-6 operator implies exotic low-energy couplings for light neutrinos, providing a link between the high-energy physics and low-energy observables.
