Effective One-Dimensional Coupling in the Highly-Frustrated Square-Lattice Itinerant Magnet CaCo$_{\mathrm{2}-y}$As$_{2}$

Inelastic neutron scattering measurements on the itinerant antiferromagnet (AFM) CaCo$_{\mathrm{2}-y}$As$_{2}$ at a temperature of 8 K reveal two orthogonal planes of scattering perpendicular to the Co square lattice in reciprocal space, demonstrating the presence of effective one-dimensional spin interactions. These results are shown to arise from near-perfect bond frustration within the $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model on a square lattice with ferromagnetic $J_1$, and hence indicate that the extensive previous experimental and theoretical study of the $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model on local-moment square spin lattices should be expanded to include itinerant spin systems.

Spin order and dynamics in the diamond-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnets CuRh2O4 and CoRh2O4

Antiferromagnetic insulators on the diamond lattice are candidate materials to host exotic magnetic phenomena ranging from spin-orbital entanglement to degenerate spiral ground-states and topological paramagnetism. Compared to other three-dimensional networks of magnetic ions, such as the geometrically frustrated pyrochlore lattice, the investigation of diamond-lattice magnetism in real materials is less mature. In this work, we characterize the magnetic properties of model A-site spinels CoRh2O4 (cobalt rhodite) and CuRh2O4 (copper rhodite) by means of thermo-magnetic and neutron scattering measurements and perform group theory analysis, Rietveld refinement, mean-field theory, and spin wave theory calculations to analyze the experimental results. Our investigation reveals that cubic CoRh2O4 is a canonical S=3/2 diamond-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet with a nearest neighbor exchange J = 0.63 meV and a Neel ordered ground-state below a temperature of 25 K. In tetragonally distorted CuRh2O4, competiting exchange interactions between up to third nearest-neighbor spins lead to the development of an incommensurate spin helix at 24 K with a magnetic propagation vector k = (0,0,0.79). Strong reduction of the ordered moment is observed for the S=1/2 spins in CuRh2O4 and captured by our 1/S corrections to the staggered magnetization. Our work identifies CoRh2O4 and CuRh2O4 as reference materials to guide future work searching for exotic quantum behavior in diamond-lattice antiferromagnets.

Hidden Order Signatures in the Antiferromagnetic Phase of U(Ru$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$)$_2$Si$_2$

We present a comprehensive set of elastic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements on a range of Fe-doped samples of U(Ru$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$)$_2$Si$_2$ with 0.01~$\le~x~\le$~0.15. All of the samples measured exhibit long-range antiferromagnetic order, with the size of the magnetic moment quickly increasing to 0.51~$μ_B$ at 2.5\% doping and continuing to increase monotonically with doping, reaching 0.69~$μ_B$ at 15\% doping. Time-of-flight and inelastic triple-axis measurements show the existence of excitations at (1~0~0) and (1.4~0~0) in all samples, which are also observed in the parent compound. While the excitations in the 1\% doping are quantitatively identical to the parent material, the gap and width of the excitations change rapidly at 2.5\% Fe doping and above. The 1\% doped sample shows evidence for a separation in temperature between the hidden order and antiferromagnetic transitions, suggesting that the antiferromagnetic state emerges at very low Fe dopings. The combined neutron scattering data suggests not only discontinuous changes in the magnetic moment and excitations between the hidden order and antiferromagnetic phases, but that these changes continue to evolve up to at least $x$~=~0.15.

Low energy magnon dynamics and magneto-optics of the skyrmionic Mott insulator Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$

In this work, we present a comprehensive study of the low energy optical magnetic response of the skyrmionic Mott insulator Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$ via high resolution time-domain THz spectroscopy. In zero field, a new magnetic excitation not predicted by spin-wave theory with frequency $f$ = 2.03 THz is observed and shown, with accompanying time-of-flight neutron scattering experiments, to be a zone folded magnon from the $\mathrm{R}$ to $\mathrmΓ$ points of the Brillouin zone. Highly sensitive polarimetry experiments performed in weak magnetic fields, $μ_0$H $<$ 200 mT, observe Faraday and Kerr rotations which are proportional to the sample magnetization, allowing for optical detection of the skyrmion phase and construction of a magnetic phase diagram. From these measurements, we extract a critical exponent of $β$ = 0.35 $\pm$ 0.04, in good agreement with the expected value for the 3D Heisenberg universality class of $β$ = 0.367. In large magnetic fields, $μ_0$H $>$ 5 T, we observe the magnetically active uniform mode of the ferrimagnetic field polarized phase whose dynamics as a function of field and temperature are studied. In addition to extracting a $g_\text{eff}$ = 2.08 $\pm$ 0.03, we observe the uniform mode to decay through a non-Gilbert damping mechanism and to possesses a finite spontaneous decay rate, $Γ_0$ $\approx$ 25 GHz, in the zero temperature limit. Our observations are attributed to Dzyaloshinkii-Moriya interactions, which have been proposed to be exceptionally strong in Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$ and are expected to impact the low energy magnetic response of such chiral magnets.

Frustrated spin-1/2 molecular magnetism in the mixed-valence antiferromagnets Ba3MRu2O9 (M = In, Y, Lu)

We have performed magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, muon spin relaxation, and neutron scattering measurements on three members of the family Ba3MRu2O9, where M = In, Y and Lu. These systems consist of mixed-valence Ru dimers on a triangular lattice with antiferromagnetic interdimer exchange. Although previous work has argued that charge order within the dimers or intradimer double exchange plays an important role in determining the magnetic properties, our results suggest that the dimers are better described as molecular units due to significant orbital hybridization, resulting in one spin-1/2 moment distributed equally over the two Ru sites. These molecular building blocks form a frustrated, quasi-two-dimensional triangular lattice. Our zero and longitudinal field muSR results indicate that the molecular moments develop a collective, static magnetic ground state, with oscillations of the zero field muon spin polarization indicative of long-range magnetic order in the Lu sample. The static magnetism is much more disordered in the Y and In samples, but they do not appear to be conventional spin glasses.

Single-ion properties of the $S_{eff}$ = 1/2 XY antiferromagnetic pyrochlores, Na$A^{\prime}$Co$_2$F$_7$ ($A^{\prime} = $ Ca$^{2+}$, Sr$^{2+}$)

The antiferromagnetic pyrochlore material NaCaCo$_2$F$_7$ is a thermal spin liquid over a broad temperature range (~ 140 K down to $T_F = 2.4 $K), in which magnetic correlations between Co$^{2+}$ dipole moments explore a continuous manifold of antiferromagnetic XY states. The thermal spin liquid is interrupted by spin freezing at a temperature that is ~ 2 % of the mean field interaction strength, leading to short range static XY clusters with distinctive relaxation dynamics. Here we report the low energy inelastic neutron scattering response from the related compound NaSrCo$_2$F$_7$, confirming that it hosts the same static and dynamic spin correlations as NaCaCo$_2$F$_7$. We then present the single-ion levels of Co$^{2+}$ in these materials as measured by inelastic neutron scattering. An intermediate spin orbit coupling model applied to an ensemble of trigonally distorted octahedral crystal fields accounts for the observed transitions. The single-ion ground state of Co$^{2+}$ is a Kramers doublet with a strongly XY-like $g$-tensor ($g_{xy}/g_{z}$ ~ 3). The local disorder inherent from the mixed pyrochlore $A$ sites (Na$^{+}$/Ca$^{2+}$ and Na$^{+}$/Sr$^{2+}$) is evident in these measurements as exaggerated broadening of some of the levels. A simple model that reproduces the salient features of the single-ion spectrum produces approximately 8.4 % and 4.1 % variation in the $z$ and $xy$ components of the $g$-tensor, respectively. This study confirms that an $S_{eff} =1/2$ model with XY antiferromagnetic exchange and weak exchange disorder serves as a basic starting point in understanding the low temperature magnetic behavior of these strongly frustrated magnets.

Robust antiferromagnetic spin waves across the metal-insulator transition in hole-doped BaMn$_{2}$As$_{2}$

BaMn$_{2}$As$_{2}$ is an antiferromagnetic insulator where a metal-insulator transition occurs with hole doping via the substitution of Ba with K. The metal-insulator transition causes only a small suppression of the Néel temperature ($T_\mathrm{N}$) and the ordered moment, suggesting that doped holes interact weakly with the Mn spin system. Powder inelastic neutron scattering measurements were performed on three different powder samples of Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$Mn$_{2}$As$_{2}$ with $x=$0, 0.125 and 0.25 to study the effect of hole doping and metallization on the spin dynamics of these compounds. We compare the neutron intensities to a linear spin wave theory approximation to the $J_{1}-J_{2}-J_{c}$ Heisenberg model. Hole doping is found to introduce only minor modifications to the exchange energies and spin gap. The changes observed in the exchange constants are consistent with the small drop of $T_\mathrm{N}$ with doping.

Spin excitations and the Fermi surface of superconducting FeS

High-temperature superconductivity occurs near antiferromagnetic instabilities and nematic state. Debate remains on the origin of nematic order in FeSe and its relation with superconductivity. Here, we use transport, neutron scatter- ing and Fermi surface measurements to demonstrate that hydro-thermo grown superconducting FeS, an isostructure of FeSe, is a tetragonal paramagnet without nematic order and with a quasiparticle mass significantly reduced from that of FeSe. Only stripe-type spin excitation is observed up to 100 meV. No direct coupling between spin excitation and superconductivity in FeS is found, suggesting that FeS is less correlated and the nematic order in FeSe is due to competing checkerboard and stripe spin fluctuations.

Spin pseudogap in the $S=\frac{1}{2}$ chain material Sr$_2$CuO$_3$ with impurities

The low energy magnetic excitation spectrum of the Heisenberg antiferromagnetic $S = 1/2$ chain system Sr$_2$CuO$_3$ with Ni- and Ca-impurities is studied by neutron spectroscopy. In all cases, a defect-induced spectral pseudogap is observed and shown to scale proportionately to the number of scattering centers in the spin chains.

Continuous excitations of the triangular-lattice quantum spin liquid YbMgGaO4

A quantum spin liquid (QSL) is an exotic state of matter in which electrons' spins are quantum entangled over long distances, but do not show symmetry-breaking magnetic order in the zero-temperature limit. The observation of QSL states is a central aim of experimental physics, because they host collective excitations that transcend our knowledge of quantum matter; however, examples in real materials are scarce. Here, we report neutron-scattering measurements on YbMgGaO4, a QSL candidate in which Yb3+ ions with effective spin-1/2 occupy a triangular lattice. Our measurements reveal a continuum of magnetic excitations - the essential experimental hallmark of a QSL - at very low temperature (0.06 K). The origin of this peculiar excitation spectrum is a crucial question, because isotropic nearest-neighbor interactions do not yield a QSL ground state on the triangular lattice. Using measurements of the magnetic excitations close to the field-polarized state, we identify antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor interactions in the presence of planar anisotropy as key ingredients for QSL formation in YbMgGaO4.

Spin-orbit coupling control of anisotropy, ground state and frustration in 5d2 Sr2MgOsO6

The influence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) on the physical properties of the 5d2 system Sr2MgOsO6 is probed via a combination of magnetometry, specific heat measurements, elastic and inelastic neutron scattering, and density functional theory calculations. Although a significant degree of frustration is expected, we find that Sr2MgOsO6 orders in a type I antiferromagnetic structure at the remarkably high temperature of 108 K. The measurements presented allow for the first accurate quantification of the size of the magnetic moment in a 5d2 system of 0.60(2) muB - a significantly reduced moment from the expected value for such a system. Furthermore, significant anisotropy is identified via a spin excitation gap, and we confirm by first principles calculations that SOC not only provides the magnetocrystalline anisotropy, but also plays a crucial role in determining both the ground state magnetic order and the size of the local moment in this compound. Through comparison to Sr2ScOsO6, it is demonstrated that SOC-induced anisotropy has the ability to relieve frustration in 5d2 systems relative to their 5d3 counterparts, providing an explanation of the high TN found in Sr2MgOsO6.

Electron doping evolution of the magnetic excitations in NaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$As

We use time-of-flight (ToF) inelastic neutron scattering (INS) spectroscopy to investigate the doping dependence of magnetic excitations across the phase diagram of NaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$As with $x=0, 0.0175, 0.0215, 0.05,$ and $0.11$. The effect of electron-doping by partially substituting Fe by Co is to form resonances that couple with superconductivity, broaden and suppress low energy ($E\le 80$ meV) spin excitations compared with spin waves in undoped NaFeAs. However, high energy ($E> 80$ meV) spin excitations are weakly Co-doping dependent. Integration of the local spin dynamic susceptibility $χ^{\prime\prime}(ω)$ of NaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$As reveals a total fluctuating moment of 3.6 $μ_B^2$/Fe and a small but systematic reduction with electron doping. The presence of a large spin gap in the Co-overdoped nonsuperconducting NaFe$_{0.89}$Co$_{0.11}$As suggests that Fermi surface nesting is responsible for low-energy spin excitations. These results parallel Ni-doping evolution of spin excitations in BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_x$As$_2$, confirming the notion that low-energy spin excitations coupling with itinerant electrons are important for superconductivity, while weakly doping dependent high-energy spin excitations result from localized moments.

XY Antiferromagnetic Ground State in the Effective S=1/2 Pyrochlore Yb2Ge2O7

We report neutron scattering and muon spin relaxation measurements (muSR) on the pyrochlore antiferromagnet Yb2Ge2O7. Inelastic neutron scattering was used to probe the transitions between crystal electric field levels, allowing us to determine the eigenvalues and eigenvectors appropriate to the J=7/2 Yb3+ ion in this environment. The crystal electric field ground state doublet in Yb2Ge2O7 corresponds primarily to m_J = +/- 1/2 with local XY anisotropy, consistent with an S_eff = 1/2 description for the Yb moments. muSR measurements reveal the presence of an ordering transition at T_N = 0.57 K with persistent weak dynamics in the ordered state. Finally, we present neutron diffraction measurements that reveal a clear phase transition to the k = (000) Gamma_5 ground state with an ordered magnetic moment of 0.3(1) mu_B per Yb ion. We compare and contrast this phenomenology with the low temperature behavior of Yb2Ti2O7 and Er2Ti2O7, the prototypical S_eff = 1/2 XY pyrochlore magnets.

Neutron Scattering Studies of Spin-Phonon Hybridization and Superconducting Spin-Gaps in High Temperature Superconductor $La_{2-x}(Sr,Ba)_{x}CuO_{4}$

We present time-of-fight neutron-scattering measurements on single crystals of $La_{2-x}Ba_{x}CuO_{4}$ (LBCO) with 0 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 0.095 and $La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}$ (LSCO) with x = 0.08 and 0.11. This range of dopings spans much of the phase diagram relevant to high temperature cuprate superconductivity, ranging from insulating, three dimensional (3D) commensurate long range antiferromagnetic order, for x $\leq$ 0.02, to two dimensional (2D) incommensurate antiferromagnetism co-existing with superconductivity for x $\geq$ 0.05. Previous work on lightly doped LBCO with x = 0.035 showed a clear resonant enhancement of the inelastic scattering coincident with the low energy crossings of the highly dispersive spin excitations and quasi-2D optic phonons. The present work extends these measurements across the phase diagram and shows this enhancement to be a common feature to this family of layered quantum magnets. Furthermore we show that the low temperature, low energy magnetic spectral weight is substantially larger for samples with non-superconducting ground states relative to any of the samples with superconducting ground states. Spin gaps, suppression of low energy magnetic spectral weight as a function of decreasing temperature, are observed in both superconducting LBCO and LSCO samples, consistent with previous observations for superconducting LSCO.

Magnetic Correlations in the Quasi-2D Semiconducting Ferromagnet CrSiTe$_3$

Intrinsic, two-dimensional ferromagnetic semiconductors are an important class of materials for overcoming the limitations of dilute magnetic semiconductors for spintronics applications. CrSiTe$_3$ is a particularly interesting member of this class, since it can likely be exfoliated down to single layers, where T$_C$ is predicted to increase dramatically. Establishing the nature of the magnetism in the bulk is a necessary precursor to understanding the magnetic behavior in thin film samples and the possible applications of this material. In this work, we use elastic and inelastic neutron scattering to measure the magnetic properties of single crystalline CrSiTe$_3$. We find that there is a very small single ion anisotropy favoring magnetic ordering along the $c$-axis and that the measured spin waves fit well to a model where the moments are only weakly coupled along that direction. Finally, we find that both static and dynamic correlations persist within the $ab$-plane up to at least 300 K, strong evidence of this material's two-dimensional characteristics that are relevant for future studies on thin film and monolayer samples.

Light atom quantum oscillations in UC and US

High energy vibrational scattering in the binary systems UC and US is measured using time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering. A clear set of well-defined peaks equally separated in energy is observed in UC, corresponding to harmonic oscillations of the light C atoms in a cage of heavy U atoms. The scattering is much weaker in US and only a few oscillator peaks are visible. We show how the difference between the materials can be understood by considering the neutron scattering lengths and masses of the lighter atoms. Monte Carlo ray tracing is used to simulate the scattering, with near quantitative agreement with the data in UC, and some differences with US. The possibility of observing anharmonicity and anisotropy in the potentials of the light atoms is investigated in UC. Overall the observed data is well accounted for by considering each light atom as a single atom isotropic quantum harmonic oscillator.

Block magnetic excitations in the orbitally selective Mott insulator BaFe2Se3

Iron pnictides and selenides display a variety of unusual magnetic phases originating from the interplay between electronic, orbital, and lattice degrees of freedom. Using powder inelastic neutron scattering on the two-leg ladder BaFe2Se3, we fully characterize the static and dynamic spin correlations associated with the Fe4 block state, an exotic magnetic ground state observed in this low-dimensional magnet and in Rb0.89Fe1.58Se2. All the magnetic excitations of the Fe4 block state predicted by an effective Heisenberg model with localized spins are observed below 300 meV and quantitatively reproduced. However, the data only account for 16 mub^2 per Fe2+, approximatively 2/3 of the total spectral weight expected for localized S=2 moments. Our results highlight how orbital degrees of freedom in iron-based magnets can conspire to stabilize an exotic magnetic state.

Strong competition between orbital-ordering and itinerancy in a frustrated spinel vanadate

The crossover from localized- to itinerant-electron behavior is associated with many intriguing phenomena in condensed-matter physics. In this paper, we investigate the crossover from localized to itinerant regimes in the spinel system Mn$_{1-x}$Co$_x$V$_2$O$_4$. At low Co doping, orbital order (OO) of the localized electrons on the V3+ ions suppresses magnetic frustration by triggering a tetragonal distortion. With Co doping, electronic itinerancy melts the OO and suppresses the structural phase transition while the reduced spin-lattice coupling produces magnetic frustration. Neutron scattering measurements and first-principles-guided spin models reveal that the non-collinear state at high Co doping is produced by weakened local anisotropy and enhanced Co-V spin interactions.
