Structure and Magnetic Properties of the Pyrochlore Iridate Y2Ir2O7

Neutron powder diffraction and inelastic measurements were performed examining the 5d pyrochlore Y$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$. Temperature dependent measurements were performed between 3.4 K and 290 K, spanning the magnetic transition at 155 K. No sign of any structural or disorder induced phase transition was observed over the entire temperature range. In addition, no sign of magnetic long-range order was observed to within the sensitivity of the instrumentation. These measurements do not rule out long range magnetic order, but the neutron powder diffraction structural refinements do put an upper bound for the ordered iridium moment of $\sim$ 0.2 $μ_B /$Ir (for a magnetic structure with wave vector $Q \neq 0$) or $\sim$ 0.5 $μ_B /$Ir (for Q = 0).

Continuous magnetic and structural phase transitions in Fe1+yTe

We report a sequence of continuous phase transformations in iron telluride, Fe1+yTe (y~0.1), which is observed by combining neutron diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements on single crystal samples. While a gradual increase of magnetic scattering near the wave vector (0.5, 0, 0.5) is seen below T = 70 K, a temperature where the discontinuous first order magneto-structural phase transition is found in systems with small y (< 0.06), the reduction of the lattice symmetry in Fe1.1Te only occurs at Ts = 63 K. Below TN = 57.5 K the long-range magnetic order develops, whose incommensurate wave vector Qm varies with temperature. Finally, at Tm ~ 45 K the system enters the low-T phase, where Qm is locked at (0.48, 0, 0.5). We conclude that these instabilities are weak compared to the strength of the underlying interactions, and we suggest that the impact of the Fe interstitials on the transitions can be treated with random-field models.

Quasi-one-dimensional magnons in an intermetallic marcasite

We present inelastic neutron scattering measurements and first principles calculations examining the intermetallic marcasite CrSb2. The observed spin wave dispersion implies that the magnetic interactions are strongly one-dimensional with antiferromagnetic chains parallel to the crystalline c-axis. Such low-dimensional excitations are unexpected in a semiconducting intermetallic system. Moreover this material may be further interesting in that the magnetic anisotropy may enhance thermoelectric properties along particular crystallographic directions.

Role of Magnetic Exchange Energy on Charge Ordering in RSFO (R=La, Pr, and Nd)

Inelastic neutron scattering is applied to study the role of magnetism in stabilizing the charge ordered state in \emph{R}$_{1/3}$Sr$_{2/3}$FeO$_{3}$ (\emph{R}SFO) (\emph{R} = La, Pr, and Nd). The ratio of the ferromagnetic exchange energy (J$_F$) and antiferromagnetic exchange energy (J$_{AF}$), |J$_F$ /J$_{AF}|, is a key indicator of the stability of the charge ordered and antiferromagnetic ordered state. This ratio is obtained from the spin wave spectrum by inelastic neutron scattering and is sufficiently large to suggest that the magnetic exchange energy alone can stabilize the charge ordered state in La$_{1/3}$Sr$_{2/3}$FeO$_{3}$ and Pr$_{1/3}$Sr$_{2/3}$FeO$_{3}$. The exchange ratio decreases from La$_{1/3}$Sr$_{2/3}$FeO$_{3}$ to Nd1$_{1/3}$Sr$_{2/3}$FeO$_{3}$ which indicates a gradual destabilization of the magnetic exchange mechanism for charge ordering in correspondence with the observed reduction in the ordering temperature.

Starting to move through a granular medium

We explore the process of initiating motion through a granular medium by measuring the force required to push a flat circular plate upward from underneath the medium. In contrast to previous measurements of the drag and penetration forces, which were conducted during steady state motion, the initiation force has a robust dependence on the diameter of the grains in the medium. We attribute this dependence to the requirement for local dilation of the grains around the circumference of the plate, as evidenced by an observed linear dependence of the initiation force on the plate diameter.

Persistence of magnons in a site-diluted dimerized frustrated antiferromagnet

We present inelastic neutron scattering and thermodynamic measurements characterizing the magnetic excitations in a disordered non-magnetic substituted spin-liquid antiferromagnet. The parent compound Ba3Mn2O8 is a dimerized, quasi-two-dimensional geometrically frustrated quantum disordered antiferromagnet. We substitute this compound with non-magnetic vanadium for the S = 1 manganese atoms, Ba3(Mn1-xVx)2O8, and find that the singlet-triplet excitations which dominate the spectrum of the parent compound persist for the full range of substitution examined, x = 0.02 to 0.3. We also observe additional low-energy magnetic fluctuations which are enhanced at the greatest substitution values. These excitations may be a precursor to a low-temperature random singlet phase which may exist in Ba3(Mn1-xVx)2O8

Evolution of spin excitations into the superconducting state in FeTe1-xSex

The nature of the superconducting state in the recently discovered Fe-based superconductors1-3 is the subject of intense scrutiny. Neutron scattering investigations have already elucidated a strong correlation between magnetism and superconductivity in the form of a spin resonance in the magnetic excitation spectrum4-7. A central unanswered question concerns the nature of the normal state spin fluctuations which may be responsible for the pairing mechanism. Here we show inelastic neutron scattering measurements of Fe1.04Te0.73Se0.27, not superconducting in bulk, and FeTe0.51Se0.49, a bulk superconductor. These measurements demonstrate that the spin fluctuation spectrum is dominated by two-dimensional incommensurate excitations near the (1/2,1/2) (square lattice (pi,0)) wavevector, the wavevector of interest in other Fe-based superconductors, that extend to energies at least as high as 300 meV. Most importantly, the spin excitations in Fe1+yTe1-xSex exhibit four-fold symmetry about the (1,0) (square lattice (pi,pi)) wavevector and are described by the identical wavevector as the normal state spin excitations in the high-TC cuprates8-12 demonstrating a commonality between the magnetism in these classes of materials which perhaps extends to a common origin for superconductivity.

Neutron powder diffraction atomic pair distribution function analysis using the ARCS chopper spectrometer at the Spallation Neutron Source

The frst neutron powder diffraction based atomic pair distribution functions (PDFs) are reported from the new wide angular-range chopper spectrometer ARCS at the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The spectrometer was run in white-beam mode, with no Fermi chopper. The PDF patterns of Si, Ni, and Al2O3 were refined using the PDFfit method and the results compared to data collected at the NPDF diffractometer at Los Alamos National Laboratory. The resulting fits are of high quality demonstrating that quantitatively reliable powder diffraction data can be obtained from ARCS when operated in this configuration.

Spin Excitations in BaFe1.84Co0.16As2 Superconductor Observed by Inelastic Neutron Scattering

Superconductivity appears to compete against the spin-density-wave in Fe pnictides. However, optimally cobalt doped samples show a quasi-two-dimensional spin excitation centered at the (0.5, 0.5, L) wavevector, "the spin resonance peak", that is strongly tied to the onset of superconductivity. By inelastic neutron scattering on single crystals we show the similarities and differences of the spin excitations in BaFe1.84Co0.16As2, with respect to the spin excitations in the high-temperature superconducting cuprates. As in the cuprates the resonance occurs as an enhancement to a part of the spin excitation spectrum which extends to higher energy transfer and higher temperature. However, unlike in the cuprates, the resonance peak in this compound is asymmetric in energy.

Two-dimensional resonant magnetic excitation in BaFe1.84Co0.16As2

Inelastic neutron scattering measurements on single crystals of superconducting BaFe1.84Co0.16As2 reveal a magnetic excitation located at wavevectors (1/2 1/2 L) in tetragonal notation. On cooling below TC, a clear resonance peak is observed at this wavevector with an energy of 8.6(0.5) meV, corresponding to 4.5(0.3) kBTC. This is in good agreement with the canonical value of 5 kBTC observed in the cuprates. The spectrum shows strong dispersion in the tetragonal plane but very weak dispersion along the c-axis, indicating that the magnetic fluctuations are two-dimensional in nature. This is in sharp contrast to the anisotropic three dimensional spin excitations seen in the undoped parent compounds.

Phonon softening and anomalous mode near the $x_{c}=0.5$ quantum critical point in Ca$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$RuO$_4$

Inelastic neutron scattering is used to measure the temperature dependent phonon dispersion in Ca$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$RuO$_{4}$ ($x=0.4$, 0.6). The in-plane $Σ_{4}$ octahedral tilt mode softens significantly at the zone boundary of the high temperature tetragonal (HTT) \textit{I4}$_{\mathit{1}}$\textit{/acd} structure as the temperature approaches the transition to a low temperature orthorhombic (LTO) \textit{Pbca} phase. This behavior is similar to that in La$_2$CuO$_4$, but a new inelastic feature that is not found in the cuprate is present. An anomalous phonon mode is observed at energy transfers greater than the $Σ_{4}$ albeit with similar dispersion. This anomalous phonon mode never softens below $\sim 5$ meV, even for temperatures below the HTT-LTO transition. This mode is attributed to the presence of intrinsic structural disorder within the \textit{I4}$_{\mathit{1}}$\textit{/acd} tetragonal structure of the doped ruthenate.

Spin-lozenge thermodynamics and magnetic excitations in Na$_3$RuO$_4$

We report inelastic and elastic neutron scattering, magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity measurements of polycrystalline sodium ruthenate (Na$_3$RuO$_4$). Previous work suggests this material consists of isolated tetramers of $S=3/2$ Ru$^{5+}$ ions in a so-called "lozenge" configuration. Using a Heisenberg antiferromagnet Hamiltonian, we analytically determine the energy eigenstates for general spin $S$. From this model, the neutron scattering cross-sections for excitations associated with spin-3/2 spin-tetramer configurations is determined. Comparison of magnetic susceptibility and inelastic neutron scattering results shows that the proposed "lozenge" model is not distinctly supported, but provides evidence that the system may be better described as a pair of non-interacting inequivalent dimers, \textit{i.e} double dimers. However, the existence of long-range magnetic order below $T_c \approx 28$ K immediately questions such a description. Although no evidence of the lozenge model is observed, future studies on single crystals may further clarify the appropriate magnetic Hamiltonian.

Phonon Density of States of LaFeAsO1-xFx

We have studied the phonon density of states (PDOS) in LaFeAsO1-xFx with inelastic neutron scattering methods. The PDOS of the parent compound(x=0) is very similar to the PDOS of samples optimally doped with fluorine to achieve the maximum Tc (x~0.1). Good agreement is found between the experimental PDOS and first-principle calculations with the exception of a small difference in Fe mode frequencies. The PDOS reported here is not consistent with conventional electron-phonon mediated superconductivity.

Destruction of Neel order and appearance of superconductivity in electron-doped cuprates by oxygen annealing process

We use thermodynamic and neutron scattering measurements to study the effect of oxygen annealing on the superconductivity and magnetism in Pr$_{0.88}$LaCe$_{0.12}$CuO$_{4-δ}$. Although the transition temperature $T_c$ measured by susceptibility and superconducting coherence length increase smoothly with gradual oxygen removal from the annealing process, bulk superconductivity, marked by a specific heat anomaly at $T_c$ and the presence of a neutron magnetic resonance, only appears abruptly when $T_c$ is close to the largest value. These results suggest that the effect of oxygen annealing must be first determined in order to establish a Ce-doping dependence of antiferromagnetism and superconductivity phase diagram for electron-doped copper oxides.

Singlet-triplet dispersion reveals additional frustration in the triangular dimer compound Ba$_3$Mn$_2$O$_8$

We present single crystal inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the S=1 dimerized quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnet Ba$_3$Mn$_2$O$_8$. The singlet-triplet dispersion reveals nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic interactions between adjacent bilayers that compete against each other. Although the inter-bilayer exchange is comparable to the intra-bilayer exchange, this additional frustration reduces the effective coupling along the c-axis and leads to a quasi-two dimensional behavior. In addition, the obtained exchange values are able to reproduce the four critical fields in the phase diagram.

Dispersive magnetic excitations in the S=1 antiferromagnet Ba$_3$Mn$_2$O$_8$

We present powder inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the S=1 dimerized antiferromagnet Ba$_3$Mn$_2$O$_8$. The $T=1.4$ K magnetic spectrum exhibits a spin-gap of $Δ\approx 1.0$ meV and a dispersive spectrum with a bandwidth of approximately 1.5 meV. Comparison to coupled dimer models describe the dispersion and scattering intensity accurately and determine the exchange constants in Ba$_3$Mn$_2$O$_8$. The wave vector dependent scattering intensity confirms the proposed S=1 dimer bond. Temperature dependent measurements of the magnetic excitations indicate the presence of both singlet-triplet and thermally activated triplet-quintet excitations.

Quantum spin correlations in an organometallic alternating sign chain

High resolution inelastic neutron scattering is used to study excitations in the organometallic magnet DMACuCl$_3$. The correct magnetic Hamiltonian describing this material has been debated for many years. Combined with high field bulk magnetization and susceptibility studies, the new results imply that DMACuCl$_3$ is a realization of the $S=1/2$ alternating antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic (AFM-FM) chain. Coupled-cluster calculations are used to derive exchange parameters, showing that the AFM and FM interactions have nearly the same strength. Analysis of the scattering intensities shows clear evidence for inter-dimer spin correlations, in contrast to existing results for conventional alternating chains. The results are discussed in the context of recent ideas concerning quantum entanglement.

Phase diagram and spin Hamiltonian of weakly-coupled anisotropic S=1/2 chains in CuCl2*2((CD3)2SO)

Field-dependent specific heat and neutron scattering measurements were used to explore the antiferromagnetic S=1/2 chain compound CuCl2 * 2((CD3)2SO). At zero field the system acquires magnetic long-range order below TN=0.93K with an ordered moment of 0.44muB. An external field along the b-axis strengthens the zero-field magnetic order, while fields along the a- and c-axes lead to a collapse of the exchange stabilized order at mu0 Hc=6T and mu0 Hc=3.5T, respectively (for T=0.65K) and the formation of an energy gap in the excitation spectrum. We relate the field-induced gap to the presence of a staggered g-tensor and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, which lead to effective staggered fields for magnetic fields applied along the a- and c-axes. Competition between anisotropy, inter-chain interactions and staggered fields leads to a succession of three phases as a function of field applied along the c-axis. For fields greater than mu0 Hc, we find a magnetic structure that reflects the symmetry of the staggered fields. The critical exponent, beta, of the temperature driven phase transitions are indistinguishable from those of the three-dimensional Heisenberg magnet, while measurements for transitions driven by quantum fluctuations produce larger values of beta.
