Hadronic transitions from Upsilon(4S) as a probe of four-quark admixture

It is argued that the observed enhancement of the hadronic transition Upsilon(4S) -> Upsilon(1S) eta relative to Upsilon(4S) -> Upsilon(1S) pi pi can be explained if the resonance Upsilon(4S) contains an admixture of a four-quark component, possibly due to the coupling to the meson channel B \bar B. A test of the discussed mechanism by searching for the transition Upsilon(4S) -> Upsilon(1S) eta'(958) is suggested. Some properties of possible four-quark states related to the suggested one by the heavy quark spin symmetry are also discussed.

Neutrino scattering on atomic electrons in searches for neutrino magnetic moment

The scattering of a neutrino on atomic electrons is considered in the situation where the energy transferred to the electrons is comparable to the characteristic atomic energies, as relevant to the current experimental search for neutrino magnetic moment. The process is contributed by the standard electroweak interaction as well as by the possible neutrino magnetic moment. Quantum mechanical sum rules are derived for the inclusive cross section at a fixed energy deposited in the atomic system, and it is shown that the differential over the energy transfer cross section is given, modulo very small corrections, by the same expression as for free electrons, once all possible final states of the electronic system are taken into account. Thus the atomic effects effectively cancel in the inclusive process.

Remarks on Decay of Defects with Internal Degrees of Freedom

We consider the decay of metastable walls and strings populated by additional degrees of freedom. The examples involve the decay of an axion wall in an external magnetic field, pionic walls, metastable walls in dense QCD. It is shown that the induced fermions escape from the wall during the decay process providing an example of the chiral magnetic effect. An absolute stabilization of metastable and unstable walls in a large magnetic field is found. A possible higher dimensional generalization of the chiral magnetic effect is mentioned.

Semiclassical calculation of an induced decay of false vacuum

We consider a model where a scalar field develops a metastable vacuum state and weakly interacts with another scalar field. In this situation we find the probability of decay of the false vacuum stimulated by the presence and collisions of particles of the second field. The discussed calculation is an illustration of the recently suggested thermal approach to treatment of induced semiclassical processes.

Semiclassical Calculation of Photon-Stimulated Schwinger Pair Creation

We consider the electron-positron pair creation by a photon in an external constant electric field. The presented treatment is based on a purely quasiclassical calculation of the imaginary part of the on-shell photon polarization operator. By using this approach we find the pair production rate for photons with polarization parallel as well as orthogonal to the external electric field in the leading order in the parameter $eE / m ^ 2$, which has been recently found by other methods. For the orthogonal polarization we also find a new contribution to the rate, which is leading in the ratio of the photon energy to the electron mass $ω/m$. We also reproduce by a purely geometrical calculation the exponential factor in the probability of the stimulated pair creation at arbitrary energy of the photon.

Photon-stimulated production of electron-positron pairs in electric field

The rate of $e^+e^-$ pair creation by external electric field in the presence of an incident photon beam is calculated for the photon energy far below the threshold, $ω\ll m$, and the field strength small as compared to the critical one, $e E \ll m^2$. We find the pair production rate using a recently developed method based on calculation of the process in a thermal bath with subsequent identification of the contribution of single-photon states. We demonstrate that a non-trivial dependence on the ratio of the small parameters, $ωm/(e E)$, emerges in this approach from an essentially (semi)classical calculation.

Quantum Fusion of Domain Walls with Fluxes

We study how fluxes on the domain wall world volume modify quantum fusion of two distant parallel domain walls into a composite wall. The elementary wall fluxes can be separated into parallel and antiparallel components. The parallel component affects neither the binding energy nor the process of quantum merger. The antiparallel fluxes, instead, increase the binding energy and, against naive expectations, suppress quantum fusion. In the small flux limit we explicitly find the bounce solution and the fusion rate as a function of the flux. We argue that at large (antiparallel) fluxes there exists a critical value of the flux (versus the difference in the wall tensions), which switches off quantum fusion altogether. This phenomenon of flux-related wall stabilization is rather peculiar: it is unrelated to any conserved quantity. Our consideration of the flux-related all stabilization is based on substantiated arguments that fall short of complete proof.

Hadronic Dynamics in the Studies at B Factories

I discuss topics in the strong QCD dynamics that are of relevance to studies of the $B$ mesons and to the spectroscopy of heavy hadrons. In particular the limitations from the hadronic dynamics for the determination of the weak-interaction parameters are discussed as well as some models for the newly observed apparently exotic resonances with hidden charm.

Quantum Fusion of Strings (Flux Tubes) and Domain Walls

We consider formation of composite strings and domain walls as a result of fusion of two elementary objects (elementary strings in the first case and elementary walls in the second) located at a distance from each other. The tension of the composite object T_2 is assumed to be less than twice the tension of the elementary object T_1, so that bound states are possible. If in the initial state the distance d between the fusing strings or walls is much larger than their thickness and satisfies the conditions T_1 d^2 >> 1 (in the string case) and T_1 d^3 >> 1 (in the wall case), the problem can be fully solved quasiclassically. The fusion probability is determined by the first, "under the barrier" stage of the process. We find the bounce configuration and its extremal action S_B. In the wall problem e^{-S_B} gives the fusion probability per unit time per unit area. In the string case, due to a logarithmic infrared divergence, the problem is well formulated only for finite-length strings. The fusion probability per unit time can be found in the limit in which the string length is much larger than the distance between two merging strings.

Spontaneous and Induced Decay of Metastable Strings and Domain Walls

We consider decay of metastable topological configurations such as strings and domain walls. The transition from a state with higher energy density to a state with lower one proceeds through quantum tunneling or through thermally catalyzed quantum tunneling (at sufficiently small temperatures). The transition rate is calculated at zero temperature including the preexponential factor and also at a finite low temperature. The thermal catalysis factor is closely related to the probability (effective length) of destruction of the string (the domain wall) in collisions of the Goldstone bosons, corresponding to transverse waves on the string (wall). We derive a general formula which allows to find the probability (effective length) of a string (wall) breakup by a collision of arbitrary number of the bosons. We find that the destruction of a string only takes place in collisions of even number of the bosons, while the destruction of the wall can occur in a collision of any number of particles. We explicitly calculate the energy dependence of such processes in two-particle collisions for arbitrary relation between the energy and the largest infrared scale (the size of a critical gap).

Destruction of a metastable string by particle collisions

We find that the destruction of a metastable string takes place only in collisions of even number of the bosons, and we explicitly calculate the energy dependence of such process in a two-particle collision for an arbitrary relation between the energy and the largest infrared scale in the problem, the length of the critical gap in the string.

Diresonance in production and scattering of heavy mesons

We consider the production and scattering amplitudes of heavy mesons in a situation, where there are two closely spaced narrow resonances, which structure we refer to as a diresonance. Assuming strong overlapping of the resonances coupled to common channels, it is found, using the unitarity and analyticity constraints, that the production amplitudes in different channels should have similar behavior with energy. In particular the ratio of the coefficients for each pole contribution to the production amplitude is fixed at -1.

Spontaneous decay of a metastable domain wall

We consider the decay of a metastable domain wall. The transition proceeds through quantum tunneling, and we calculate in arbitrary number of dimensions the preexponential factor multiplying the leading semiclassical exponential expression for the rate of the process. We find that the effect of the motion in transverse directions reduces to a renormalization of the tension of the edge of the wall in the semiclassical exponent. This behavior is similar to the one previously found for breaking of a metastable string. However this simple property is generally lost for spontaneous decay of higher-dimensional branes.

Breaking of a metastable string at finite temperature

We consider the phase transition of a string with tension $\eps_1$ to a string with a smaller tension $\eps_2$ at finite temperature. For sufficiently small temperatures the transition proceeds through thermally catalyzed quantum tunneling, and we calculate in arbitrary number of dimensions the thermal catalysis factor. At $\eps_2=0$ the found formula for the decay rate also describes a break up of a metastable string into two pieces.

Holographic Hadro-Quarkonium

We consider the recently suggested model for some resonances near the open charm threshold as bound states of charmonium inside excited light mesons. It is argued in the soft-wall holographic model of QCD that such states of heavy quarkonium necessarily exist at sufficiently large spin of the light meson. The bound state is provided by the dilaton exchange through the 5D bulk. We also argue that the decay of such bound systems into mesons with open heavy flavors due to splitting of the heavy quarkonium can be treated as semiclassical tunneling and is suppressed. This behavior is in agreement with the known relative suppression of the decay of the discussed charmonium-like resonances into channels with D mesons.

Hadro-Charmonium

We argue that relatively compact charmonium states, $J/ψ$, $ψ(2S)$, $χ_c$, can very likely be bound inside light hadronic matter, in particular inside higher resonances made from light quarks and/or gluons. The charmonium state in such binding essentially retains its properties, so that the bound system decays into light mesons and the particular charmonium resonance. Thus such bound states of a new type, which we call hadro-charmonium, may explain the properties of some of the recently observed resonant peaks, in particular of Y(4.26), Y(4.32-4.36), Y(4.66), and Z(4.43). We discuss further possible implications of the suggested picture for the observed states and existence of other states of hadro-charmonium and hadro-bottomonium.
