Report of the Quark Flavor Physics Working Group

This report represents the response of the Intensity Frontier Quark Flavor Physics Working Group to the Snowmass charge. We summarize the current status of quark flavor physics and identify many exciting future opportunities for studying the properties of strange, charm, and bottom quarks. The ability of these studies to reveal the effects of new physics at high mass scales make them an essential ingredient in a well-balanced experimental particle physics program.

The Octet Structure Function and Radiative Quarkonia Decay

The Operator Product Expansion, in conjunction with the power counting of non-relativistic field theory, is used to examine the end-point region of the radiative decay of heavy quark bound states with $^3S_1$ quantum numbers, $Q\bar{Q}\rightarrow γ+X$. We identify an infinite class of operators that determine the shape of the photonic end-point spectrum. These operators can be resummed to form an octet structure function which parameterizes the energy of the dynamical gluon content of the leading octet Fock state component of the quarkonium. This color-octet contribution is important when the photon spectrum is examined with a resolution given by $ΔE_γ\sim m_Qv^2$, where $v^2$ is the relative quark velocity squared. The formalism used makes explicit the shift of the end-point from its partonic to its hadronic value.

Chiral Perturbation Theory for $B \rightarrow D^*$ and $B \rightarrow D$ Semileptonic Transition Matrix Elements at Zero Recoil

Heavy quark symmetry predicts the value of $B \rightarrow D$ and $B \rightarrow D^*$ transition matrix elements of the current $\bar c γ_μ(1 - γ_5)b$, at zero recoil (where in the rest frame of the $B$ the $D$ or $D^*$ is also at rest). We use chiral perturbation theory to compute the leading corrections to these predictions which are generated at low momentum, below the chiral symmetry breaking scale.

Radiative $D^*$ Decay Using Heavy Quark and Chiral Symmetry

The implications of chiral $SU(3)_L \times SU(3)_R$ symmetry and heavy quark symmetry for the radiative decays $D^{*0}\to D^0γ$, $D^{*+}\to D^+γ$, and $D_s^*\to D_sγ$ are discussed. Particular attention is paid to $SU(3)$ violating contributions of order $m_q^{1/2}$. Experimental data on these radiative decays provide constraints on the $D^* Dπ$ coupling.

Chiral Perturbation Theory for $f_{D_S}/f_D$ and $B_{B_S}/B_{B}$

The decay constants for the $D$ and $D_S$ mesons, denoted $f_D$ and $f_{D_S}$ respectively, are equal in the $SU(3)_V$ limit, as are the hadronic amplitudes for $B_S-\bar B_S$ and $B^0-\bar B^0$ mixing. The leading $SU(3)_V$ violating contribution to $\left( f_{D_S} / f_D \right)$ and to the ratio of hadronic matrix elements relevant for $B_S-\bar B_S$ and $B^0-\bar B^0$ mixing amplitudes are calculated in chiral perturbation theory. We discuss the formalism needed to include both meson and anti-meson fields in the heavy quark effective theory.
