Similarity versus Coincidence Rotations of Lattices

The groups of similarity and coincidence rotations of an arbitrary lattice L in d-dimensional Euclidean space are considered. It is shown that the group of similarity rotations contains the coincidence rotations as a normal subgroup. Furthermore, the structure of the corresponding factor group is examined. If the dimension d is a prime number, this factor group is an elementary Abelian d-group. Moreover, if L is a rational lattice, the factor group is trivial (d odd) or an elementary Abelian 2-group (d even).

Coincidences in 4 dimensions

The coincidence site lattices (CSLs) of prominent 4-dimensional lattices are considered. CSLs in 3 dimensions have been used for decades to describe grain boundaries in crystals. Quasicrystals suggest to also look at CSLs in dimensions $d>3$. Here, we discuss the CSLs of the root lattice $A_4$ and the hypercubic lattices, which are of particular interest both from the mathematical and the crystallographic viewpoint. Quaternion algebras are used to derive their coincidence rotations and the CSLs. We make use of the fact that the CSLs can be linked to certain ideals and compute their indices, their multiplicities and encapsulate all this in generating functions in terms of Dirichlet series. In addition, we sketch how these results can be generalised for 4--dimensional $\Z$--modules by discussing the icosian ring.

Discrete Tomography of Planar Model Sets

Discrete tomography is a well-established method to investigate finite point sets, in particular finite subsets of periodic systems. Here, we start to develop an efficient approach for the treatment of finite subsets of mathematical quasicrystals. To this end, the class of cyclotomic model sets is introduced, and the corresponding consistency, reconstruction and uniqueness problems of the discrete tomography of these sets are discussed.

An asymptotic maximum principle for essentially linear evolution models

Recent work on mutation-selection models has revealed that, under specific assumptions on the fitness function and the mutation rates, asymptotic estimates for the leading eigenvalue of the mutation-reproduction matrix may be obtained through a low-dimensional maximum principle in the limit N to infinity (where N is the number of types). In order to extend this variational principle to a larger class of models, we consider here a family of reversible N by N matrices and identify conditions under which the high-dimensional Rayleigh-Ritz variational problem may be reduced to a low-dimensional one that yields the leading eigenvalue up to an error term of order 1/N. For a large class of mutation-selection models, this implies estimates for the mean fitness, as well as a concentration result for the ancestral distribution of types.

Which distributions of matter diffract? - Some answers

This review revolves around the question which general distribution of scatterers (in a Euclidean space) results in a pure point diffraction spectrum. Firstly, we treat mathematical diffration theory and state conditions under which such a distribution has pure point diffraction. We explain how a cut and project scheme naturally appears in this context and then turn our attention to the special situation of model sets and lattice substitution systems. As an example, we analyse the paperfolding sequence. In the last part, we summarize some aspects of stochastic point sets, with focus both on structure and diffraction.

Root lattices and quasicrystals

It is shown how root lattices and their reciprocals might serve as the right pool for the construction of quasicrystalline structure models. All non-periodic symmetries observed so far are covered in minimal embedding with maximal symmetry.

A critical Ising model on the Labyrinth

A zero-field Ising model with ferromagnetic coupling constants on the so-called Labyrinth tiling is investigated. Alternatively, this can be regarded as an Ising model on a square lattice with a quasi-periodic distribution of up to eight different coupling constants. The duality transformation on this tiling is considered and the self-dual couplings are determined. Furthermore, we analyze the subclass of exactly solvable models in detail parametrizing the coupling constants in terms of four rapidity parameters. For those, the self-dual couplings correspond to the critical points which, as expected, belong to the Onsager universality class.

Diffractive point sets with entropy

After a brief historical survey, the paper introduces the notion of entropic model sets (cut and project sets), and, more generally, the notion of diffractive point sets with entropy. Such sets may be thought of as generalizations of lattice gases. We show that taking the site occupation of a model set stochastically results, with probabilistic certainty, in well-defined diffractive properties augmented by a constant diffuse background. We discuss both the case of independent, but identically distributed (i.i.d.) random variables and that of independent, but different (i.e., site dependent) random variables. Several examples are shown.

Partition Function Zeros for Aperiodic Systems

The study of zeros of partition functions, initiated by Yang and Lee, provides an important qualitative and quantitative tool in the study of critical phenomena. This has frequently been used for periodic as well as hierarchical lattices. Here, we consider magnetic field and temperature zeros of Ising model partition functions on several aperiodic structures. In 1D, we analyze aperiodic chains obtained from substitution rules, the most prominent example being the Fibonacci chain. In 2D, we focus on the tenfold symmetric triangular tiling which allows efficient numerical treatment by means of corner transfer matrices.
