Interferometric Survey of Stellar Parameters: Mass of the metallic A-type binary $\beta$ Aur

With the capabilities of the new visible CHARA/SPICA instrument and the multiple spectral band operation of CHARA, our goal is to resolve orbits of short-period binaries and develop a robust framework for combining interferometric, spectroscopic, and photometric observations into a single consistent model. For our target sample, we selected suitable binaries based on brightness, angular separation, and orbital properties based on the expected performance of the CHARA/SPICA instrument. As a case study, we analysed the bright eclipsing binary $\beta$ Aurigae, composed of two slightly evolved A1 stars. We combined new interferometric observations of $\beta$ Aur obtained with CHARA/SPICA, MIRC-X, and MYSTIC with archival MIRC data, radial velocities, and light curves. We first derived astrometric positions from interferometric observables and computed an orbital solution. Afterwards, we implemented a unified model, capable of tying interferometric modelling with the ellc code to simultaneously fit all observables using MCMC sampling. We performed a detailed analysis of the noise statistics of each data set and in the end we adopted a profile likelihood approach to account for underestimated noise and systematics. We derived a consistent orbital and physical solution for $\beta$ Aur through joint modelling. The inclusion of interferometric data tightly constrains the angular semi-major axis and inclination. Using profile likelihood to account for the different intrinsic levels of uncertainty of the fundamentally different observables, we derived the masses of the two stars, $M_1 = 2.359 \pm 0.005$ M$_S$ and $M_2 = 2.293 \pm 0.004$ M$_S$, their radii $R_1 = 2.752 \pm 0.002$ R$_S$ and $R_2 = 2.622 \pm 0.002$ R$_S$, and the distance to the binary, $d = 24.30\pm0.05$ pc.

The orbital parameters of the del Cep inner binary system determined using 2019 HARPS-N spectroscopic data

An inner companion has recently been discovered orbiting the prototype of classical Cepheids, delta Cep, whose orbital parameters are still not fully constrained. We collected new precise radial velocity measurements of delta Cep in 2019 using the HARPS-N spectrograph mounted at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo. Using these radial velocity measurements, we aimed to improve the orbital parameters of the system. We considered a template available in the literature as a reference for the radial velocity curve of the pulsation of the star. We then calculated the residuals between our global dataset (composed of the new 2019 observations plus data from the literature) and the template as a function of the pulsation phase and the barycentric Julian date. This provides the orbital velocity of the Cepheid component. Using a Bayesian tool, we derived the orbital parameters of the system. Considering priors based on already published Gaia constraints, we find for the orbital period a maximum a posteriori probability of Porb=9.32+/-0.03 years (uncertainties correspond to the 95% highest density probability interval), and we obtain an eccentricity e=0.71+/-0.02, a semimajor axis a=0.029 +/-0.003 arcsecond, and a center-of-mass velocity V0=-17.28+/-0.08 km/s, among other parameters. In this short analysis we derive the orbital parameters of the delta Cep inner binary system and provide a cleaned radial velocity curve of the pulsation of the star, which will be used to study its Baade-Wesselink projection factor in a future publication.

High wave vector non-reciprocal spin wave beams

We report unidirectional transmission of micron-wide spin waves beams in a 55 nm thin YIG. We downscaled a chiral coupling technique implementing Ni80Fe20 nanowires arrays with different widths and lattice spacing to study the non-reciprocal transmission of exchange spin waves down to lambda = 80 nm. A full spin wave spectroscopy analysis of these high wavevector coupled-modes shows some difficulties to characterize their propagation properties, due to both the non-monotonous field dependence of the coupling efficiency, and also the inhomogeneous stray field from the nanowires.

Spin wave diffraction model for perpendicularly magnetized films

We present a near-field diffraction model for spin waves in perpendicularly magnetized films applicable in any geometries of excitation fields. This model relies on Kalinikos-Slavin formalism to express the dynamic susceptibility tensor in k-space, and calculate the diffraction patterns via inverse 2D-Fourier transform of the response functions. We show an excellent quantitative agreement between our model and MuMax3 micro-magnetic simulations on two different geometries of antennas. Our method benchmarks spin wave diffraction in perpendicularly magnetized films, and is readily applicable for future designs of magnon beamforming and interferometric devices.

Electrical spectroscopy of forward volume spin waves in perpendicularly magnetized materials

We study the potential of all-electrical inductive techniques for the spectroscopy of propagating forward volume spin waves. We develop a one-dimensional model to account for the electrical signature of spin-wave reflection and transmission between inductive antennas and validate it with experiments on a perpendicularly magnetized Co/Ni multilayer. We describe the influence of the antenna geometry and antenna-to-antenna separation, as well as that of the material parameters on the lineshape of the inductive signals. For a finite damping, the broadband character of the antenna emission in the wave vector space imposes to take into account the growing decoherence of the magnetization waves upon their spatial propagation. The transmission signal can be viewed as resulting from two contributions: a first one from propagating spin-waves leading to an oscillatory phase of the broadband transmission coefficient, and another one originating from the distant induction of ferromagnetic resonance because of the long-range stray fields of realistic antennas. Depending on the relative importance of these two contributions, the decay of the transmitted signal with the propagation distance may not be exponential and the oscillatory character of the spin-wave phase upon propagation may be hidden. Our model and its experimental validation allow to define geometrical and material specifications to be met to enable the use of forward volume spin waves as efficient information carriers.

Determining key spin-orbitronic parameters by means of propagating spin waves

We characterize spin wave propagation and its modification by an electrical current in Permalloy(Py)/Pt bilayers with Py thickness between 4 and 20 nm. First, we analyze the frequency non-reciprocity of surface spin waves and extract from it the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction constant $D_s$ accounting for an additional contribution due to asymmetric surface anisotropies. Second, we measure the spin-wave relaxation rate and deduce from it the Py/Pt spin mixing conductance $g^{\uparrow\downarrow}_{eff}$. Last, applying a \textit{dc} electrical current, we extract the spin Hall conductivity $σ_{SH}$ from the change of spin wave relaxation rate due to the spin-Hall spin transfer torque. We obtain a consistent picture of the spin wave propagation data for different film thicknesses using a single set of parameters $D_s=0.25$ pJ/m, $g^{\uparrow\downarrow}_{eff} = 3.2\times 10^{19}$ m$^{-2}$ and $σ_{SH}=4\times10^{5}$ S/m.

Spin-wave propagation in ultra-thin YIG based waveguides

Spin-wave propagation in an assembly of microfabricated 20 nm thick, 2.5 μm wide Yttrium Iron Garnet (YIG) waveguides is studied using propagating spin-wave spectroscopy (PSWS) and phase resolved micro-focused Brillouin Light Scattering (μ-BLS) spectroscopy. We show that spin-wave propagation in 50 parallel waveguides is robust against microfabrication induced imperfections. Spin-wave propagation parameters are studied in a wide range of excitation frequencies for the Damon-Eshbach (DE) configuration. As expected from its low damping, YIG allows the propagation of spin waves over long distances (the attenuation lengths is 25 μm at μ$_{0}$H = 45 mT). Direct mapping of spin waves by μ-BLS allows us to reconstruct the spin-wave dispersion relation and to confirm the multi-mode propagation in the waveguides, glimpsed by propagating spin-wave spectroscopy.

Spin wave amplification using the spin Hall effect in permalloy/platinum bilayers

We investigate the effect of an electrical current on the attenuation length of a 900 nm wavelength spin-wave in a permalloy/Pt bilayer using propagating spin-wave spectroscopy. The modification of the spin-wave relaxation rate is linear in current density, reaching up to 14% for a current density of 2.3$\times10^{11} $A/m$^2$ in Pt. This change is attributed to the spin transfer torque induced by the spin Hall effect and corresponds to an effective spin Hall angle of 0.13, which is among the highest values reported so far. The spin Hall effect thus appears as an efficient way of amplifying/attenuating propagating spin waves.

Frequency non-reciprocity of surface spin wave in Permalloy thin films

Surface spin waves in thin Permalloy films are studied by means of propagative spin wave spectroscopy. We observe a systematic difference of up to several tens of MHz when comparing the frequencies of counter-propagating waves. This frequency non-reciprocity effect is modeled using an analytical dipole-exchange theory that considers the mutual influence of non-reciprocal spin wave modal profiles and differences in magnetic anisotropies at the two film surfaces. At moderate film thickness (20 nm and below), the frequency non-reciprocity scales linearly with the wave vector and quadratically with the thickness, whereas a more complex non-monotonic behavior is observed at larger thickness. Our work suggests that surface wave frequency non-reciprocity can be used as an accurate spectroscopic probe of magnetic asymmetries in thin ferromagnetic films.

rf susceptibility of La_{1-x}Sr_{x}MnO_{3} single crystals : magnetic signatures of structural changes

A sensitive tunnel diode oscillator (TDO) operating at 4MHz is used to probe the dynamic response of La_{1-x}Sr_{x}MnO_{3} single crystals for x=0.125,0.175,0.28 and 0.33 doping. Systematics of the measured change in reactance as a function of temperature (30K<T<320K) and DC magnetic field (0<H<6kOe) reveal distinct temperature and field scales associated with the dynamic response of spin. It is notable that these features are far more striking than the corresponding features in static measurements. The results are discussed in the context of structural changes leading to polaron ordering.
