First search for atmospheric and extraterrestrial neutrino-induced cascades with the IceCube detector

We report on the first search for atmospheric and for diffuse astrophysical neutrino-induced showers (cascades) in the IceCube detector using 257 days of data collected in the year 2007-2008 with 22 strings active. A total of 14 events with energies above 16 TeV remained after event selections in the diffuse analysis, with an expected total background contribution of $8.3\pm 3.6$. At 90% confidence we set an upper limit of $E^2Φ_{90%CL}<3.6\times10^{-7} GeV \cdot cm^{-2} \cdot s^{-1}\cdot sr^{-1} $ on the diffuse flux of neutrinos of all flavors in the energy range between 24 TeV and 6.6 PeV assuming that $Φ\propto E^{-2}$ and that the flavor composition of the $ν_e : ν_μ: ν_τ$ flux is $1 : 1 : 1$ at the Earth. The atmospheric neutrino analysis was optimized for lower energies. A total of 12 events were observed with energies above 5 TeV. The observed number of events is consistent with the expected background, within the uncertainties.

Measurement of the atmospheric neutrino energy spectrum from 100 GeV to 400 TeV with IceCube

A measurement of the atmospheric muon neutrino energy spectrum from 100 GeV to 400 TeV was performed using a data sample of about 18,000 up-going atmospheric muon neutrino events in IceCube. Boosted decision trees were used for event selection to reject mis-reconstructed atmospheric muons and obtain a sample of up-going muon neutrino events. Background contamination in the final event sample is less than one percent. This is the first measurement of atmospheric neutrinos up to 400 TeV, and is fundamental to understanding the impact of this neutrino background on astrophysical neutrino observations with IceCube. The measured spectrum is consistent with predictions for the atmospheric muon neutrino plus muon antineutrino flux.

Search for a Lorentz-violating sidereal signal with atmospheric neutrinos in IceCube

A search for sidereal modulation in the flux of atmospheric muon neutrinos in IceCube was performed. Such a signal could be an indication of Lorentz-violating physics. Neutrino oscillation models, derivable from extensions to the Standard Model, allow for neutrino oscillations that depend on the neutrino's direction of propagation. No such direction-dependent variation was found. A discrete Fourier transform method was used to constrain the Lorentz and CPT-violating coefficients in one of these models. Due to the unique high energy reach of IceCube, it was possible to improve constraints on certain Lorentz-violating oscillations by three orders of magnitude with respect to limits set by other experiments.

The first search for extremely-high energy cosmogenic neutrinos with the IceCube Neutrino Observatory

We report on the results of the search for extremely-high energy (EHE) neutrinos with energies above $10^7$ GeV obtained with the partially ($\sim$30%) constructed IceCube in 2007. From the absence of signal events in the sample of 242.1 days of effective livetime, we derive a 90% C.L. model independent differential upper limit based on the number of signal events per energy decade at $E^2 ϕ_{ν_e+ν_μ+ν_τ}\simeq 1.4 \times 10^{-6}$ GeV cm$^{-2}$ sec$^{-1}$ sr$^{-1}$ for neutrinos in the energy range from $3\times10^7$ to $3\times10^9$ GeV.

Calibration and Characterization of the IceCube Photomultiplier Tube

Over 5,000 PMTs are being deployed at the South Pole to compose the IceCube neutrino observatory. Many are placed deep in the ice to detect Cherenkov light emitted by the products of high-energy neutrino interactions, and others are frozen into tanks on the surface to detect particles from atmospheric cosmic ray showers. IceCube is using the 10-inch diameter R7081-02 made by Hamamatsu Photonics. This paper describes the laboratory characterization and calibration of these PMTs before deployment. PMTs were illuminated with pulses ranging from single photons to saturation level. Parameterizations are given for the single photoelectron charge spectrum and the saturation behavior. Time resolution, late pulses and afterpulses are characterized. Because the PMTs are relatively large, the cathode sensitivity uniformity was measured. The absolute photon detection efficiency was calibrated using Rayleigh-scattered photons from a nitrogen laser. Measured characteristics are discussed in the context of their relevance to IceCube event reconstruction and simulation efforts.

Magnetic Yang-Mills Theory as an Effective Field Theory of the Gluon Plasma

We propose magnetic SU(N) pure gauge theory as an effective field theory describing the long distance nonperturbative magnetic response of the deconfined phase of Yang-Mills theory. The magnetic non-Abelian Lagrangian, unlike that of electrodynamics where there is exact electromagnetic duality, is not known explicitly, but here we regard the magnetic SU(N) Yang-Mills Lagrangian as the leading term in the long distance effective gauge theory of the plasma phase. In this treatment, which is applicable for a range of temperatures in the interval T_c < T < 3 T_c accessible in heavy ion experiments, formation of the magnetic energy profile around a spatial Wilson loop in the deconfined phase parallels the formation of an electric flux tube in the confined phase. We use the effective theory to calculate spatial Wilson loops and the magnetic charge density induced in the plasma by the corresponding color electric current loops. These calculations suggest that the deconfined phase of Yang-Mills theory has the properties of a closely-packed fluid of magnetically charged composite objects.

Multiwavelength Observations of Markarian 421 in 2005 - 2006

Since September 2005, the Whipple 10m Gamma-ray Telescope has been operated primarily as a blazar monitor. The five Northern Hemisphere blazars that have already been detected at the Whipple Observatory, Markarian 421, H1426+428, Markarian 501, 1ES 1959+650 and 1ES 2344+514, are monitored routinely each night that they are visible. We report on the Markarian 421 observations taken from November 2005 to June 2006 in the gamma-ray, X-ray, optical and radio bands. During this time, Markarian 421 was found to be variable at all wavelengths probed. Both the variability and the correlations among different energy regimes are studied in detail here. A tentative correlation, with large spread, was measured between the X-ray and gamma-ray bands, while no clear correlation was evident among the other energy bands. In addition to this, the well-sampled spectral energy distribution of Markarian 421 (1101+384) is presented for three different activity levels. The observations of the other blazar targets will be reported separately.

The PHOBOS Glauber Monte Carlo

``Glauber'' models are used to calculate geometric quantities in the initial state of heavy ion collisions, such as impact parameter, number of participating nucleons and initial eccentricity. The four RHIC experiments have different methods for Glauber Model calculations, leading to similar results for various geometric observables. In this document, we describe an implementation of the Monte Carlo based Glauber Model calculation used by the PHOBOS experiment. The assumptions that go in the calculation are described. A user's guide is provided for running various calculations.

Understanding Confinement From Deconfinement

We use effective magnetic SU(N) pure gauge theory with cutoff M and fixed gauge coupling g_m to calculate non-perturbative magnetic properties of the deconfined phase of SU(N) Yang-Mills theory. We obtain the response to an external closed loop of electric current by reinterpreting and regulating the calculation of the one loop effective potential in Yang-Mills theory. This effective potential gives rise to a color magnetic charge density, the counterpart in the deconfined phase of color magnetic currents introduced in effective dual superconductor theories of the confined phase via magnetically charged Higgs fields. The resulting spatial Wilson loop has area law behavior. Using values of M and g_m determined in the confined phase, we find SU(3) spatial string tensions compatible with lattice simulations in the temperature interval 1.5T_c < T < 2.5T_c. Use of the effective theory to analyze experiments on heavy ion collisions will provide applications and further tests of these ideas.

From QCD to Dual Superconductivity to Effective String Theory

We show how an effective field theory of long distance QCD, describing a dual superconductor, can be expressed as an effective string theory of superconducting vortices. We use the semiclassical expansion of this effective string theory about a classical rotating string solution in any spacetime dimension D to obtain the semiclassical meson energy spectrum. We argue that the experimental data on Regge trajectories along with numerical simulations of the heavy quark potentials provide good evidence for an effective string description of long distance QCD.

Effective String Theory of Dual Superconductivity

We show how an effective field theory of long distance QCD, describing a dual superconductor, can be expressed as an effective string theory of superconducting vortices. We use the semiclassical expansion of this effective string theory about a classical rotating string solution in any spacetime dimension D to obtain the semiclassical meson energy spectrum. For D=26, it formally coincides with the energy spectrum of the open string in classical Bosonic string theory. However, its physical origin is different. It is a semiclassical spectrum of an effective string theory valid only for large values of the angular momentum. For D=4, the first semiclassical correction adds the constant 1/12 to the classical Regge formula for the angular momentum of mesons on the leading Regge trajectory.

Dual Superconductivity, Effective String Theory, and Regge Trajectories

We show how an effective field theory of long distance QCD, describing a dual superconductor, can be expressed as an effective string theory of superconducting vortices. We evaluate the semiclassical expansion of this effective string theory about a classical rotating string solution in any spacetime dimension D. We show that, after renormalization, the zero point energy of the string fluctuations remains finite when the masses of the quarks on the ends of the strings approach zero. For D = 26 the semiclassical energy spectrum of the rotating string formally coincides with that of the open string in classical Bosonic string theory. However, its physical origin is different. It is a semiclassical spectrum of an effective string theory valid only for large values of the angular momentum. For D = 4 the first semiclassical correction adds the constant 1/12 to the classical Regge formula for the angular momentum of mesons on the leading Regge trajectory. The excited vibrational modes of the rotating string give rise to daughter Regge trajectories determining the spectrum of hybrid mesons.

Semiclassical Quantization of Effective String Theory and Regge Trajectories

We begin with an effective string theory for long distance QCD, and evaluate the semiclassical expansion of this theory about a classical rotating string solution, taking into account the the dynamics of the boundary of the string. We show that, after renormalization, the zero point energy of the string fluctuations remains finite when the masses of the quarks on the ends of the string approach zero. The theory is then conformally invariant in any spacetime dimension D. For D=26 the energy spectrum of the rotating string formally coincides with that of the open string in classical Bosonic string theory. However, its physical origin is different. It is a semiclassical spectrum of an effective string theory valid only for large values of the angular momentum. For D=4, the first semiclassical correction adds the constant 1/12 to the classical Regge formula.

Effective String Theory of Vortices and Regge Trajectories of Hybrid Mesons with Zero Mass Quarks

We show how a field theory containing classical vortex solutions can be expressed as an effective string theory of long distance QCD describing the two transverse oscillations of the string. We use the semiclassical expansion of this effective string theory about a classical rotating string solution to obtain Regge trajectories for mesons with zero mass quarks. The first semiclassical correction adds the constant 1/12 to the classical Regge formula for the angular momentum of mesons on the leading Regge trajectory. In D spacetime dimensions, this additive constant is (D-2)/24. The excited states of the rotating string give rise to daughter Regge trajectories determining the spectrum of hybrid mesons.

Dual QCD, Effective String Theory, And Regge Trajectories

We start with an effective field theory containing classical vortex solutions and show that the fluctuations of these vortices are described by an effective string theory. Viewed as a model for long distance QCD, this theory provides a concrete picture of the QCD string as a fluctuating Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen vortex of a dual superconductor on the border between type I and type II. We present arguments which suggest that the action of the effective string theory is the Nambu-Goto action, i.e. the rigidity vanishes. We then use this theory to calculate the corrections to classical Regge trajectories due to string fluctuations.

Effective String Theory of Vortices and Regge Trajectories

Starting from a field theory containing classical vortex solutions, we obtain an effective string theory of these vortices as a path integral over the two transverse degrees of freedom of the string. We carry out a semiclassical expansion of this effective theory, and use it to obtain corrections to Regge trajectories due to string fluctuations.

An effective string theory of Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen vortices

We obtain an effective string theory of the Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen vortices of the Abelian Higgs model. The theory has an anomaly free effective string action which, when the extrinsic curvature is set equal to zero, yields the Nambu-Goto action. This generalizes previous work in which a string representation was obtained in the London limit, where the magnitude of the Higgs field is fixed. Viewed as a model for long distance QCD, it provides a concrete picture of the QCD string as a fluctuating Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen vortex of a dual superconductor on the border between type I and type II.
