From the crust to the core of Neutron Stars on a microscopic basis

Within a microscopic approach the structure of Neutron Stars is usually studied by modelling the homogeneous nuclear matter of the core by a suitable Equation of State, based on a many-body theory, and the crust by a functional based on a more phenomenological approach. We present the first calculation of Neutron Star overall structure by adopting for the core an Equation of State derived from the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock theory and for the crust, including the pasta phase, an Energy Density Functional based on the same Equation of State, and which is able to describe accurately the binding energy of nuclei throughout the mass table. Comparison with other approaches is discussed. The relevance of the crust Equation of state for the Neutron Star radius is particularly emphasised.

Nucleon effective masses within the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock theory: Impact on stellar neutrino emission

We calculate the effective masses of neutrons and protons in dense nuclear matter within the microscopic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock many-body theory and study the impact on the neutrino emissivity processes of neutron stars. We compare results based on different nucleon-nucleon potentials and nuclear three-body forces. Useful parametrizations of the numerical results are given. We find substantial in-medium suppression of the emissivities, strongly dependent on the interactions.

Accurate nuclear masses from a three parameter Kohn-Sham DFT approach (BCPM)

Given the promising features of the recently proposed Barcelona-Catania-Paris (BCP) functional \cite{Baldo.08}, it is the purpose of this paper to still improve on it. It is, for instance, shown that the number of open parameters can be reduced from 4-5 to 2-3, i.e. by practically a factor of two. One parameter is tightly fixed by a fine-tuning of the bulk, a second by the surface energy. The third is the strength of the spin-orbit potential on which the final result does not depend within the scatter of the values used in Skyrme and Gogny like functionals. An energy rms value of 1.58 MeV is obtained from a fit of these three parameters to the 579 measured masses reported in the Audi and Waspra 2003 compilation. This rms value compares favorably with the one obtained using other successful mean field theories. Charge radii are also well reproduced when compared with experiment. The energies of some excited states, mostly the isoscalar giant monopole resonances, are studied within this model as well.

Transport coefficients of nuclear matter in neutron star cores

We calculate thermal conductivity and shear viscosity of nucleons in dense nuclear matter of neutron star cores in the non-relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock framework. Nucleon-nucleon interaction is described by the Argonne v18 potential with addition of the Urbana IX effective three-body forces. We find that this three body force leads to decrease of the kinetic coefficients with respect to the two-body case. The results of calculations are compared with electron and muon transport coefficients as well as with the results of other authors.

The neutron star in Cassiopeia A: equation of state, superfluidity, and Joule heating

The thermomagnetic evolution of the young neutron star in Cassiopea A is studied by considering fast neutrino emission processes. In particular, we consider neutron star models obtained from the equation of state computed in the framework of the Brueckner-Bethe-Goldstone many-body theory and variational methods, and models obtained with the Akmal-Pandharipande-Ravenhall equation of state. It is shown that it is possible to explain a fast cooling regime as the one observed in the neutron star in Cassiopea A if the Joule heating produced by dissipation of the small-scale magnetic field in the crust is taken into account. We thus argue that it is difficult to put severe constraints on the superfluid gap if the Joule heating is considered.

Selecting microscopic Equations of State

We compare a set of equations of state derived within microscopic many-body approaches, and study their predictions as far as phenomenological data on nuclei from heavy ion collisions, and astrophysical observations on neutron stars are concerned. We find that all the data, taken together, put strong constraints not easy to be fulfilled accurately. However, no major discrepancies are found among the selected equations of state and with respect to the data. The results provide an estimate of the uncertainty on the theoretical prediction at a microscopic level of the nuclear equation of state.

Different scenarios of topological phase transitions in homogeneous neutron matter

We study different scenarios of topological phase transitions in the vicinity of the π^0 condensation point in neutron matter. The transitions occur between the Fermi-liquid state and a topologically different one with two sheets of the Fermi surface. Two possibilities of a rearrangement of quasiparticle degrees of freedom are shown: the first-order topological phase transition and the second-order one. The order of the phase transition is found to be strongly dependent on the value of the critical wave vector of the soft π^0 mode. The thermodynamics of the system is also studied. It is shown that the topology of the quasiparticle momentum distribution is mainly determined by the neutron matter density, while the temperature T is essential in a narrow density region. A simple explanation of the first-order topological phase transition at T=0 is given.

Correlations in Nuclear Matter

We analyze the nuclear matter correlation properties in terms of the pair correlation function. To this aim we systematically compare the results for the variational method in the Lowest Order Constrained Variational (LOCV) approximation and for the Bruekner-Hartree-Fock (BHF) scheme. A formal link between the Jastrow correlation factor of LOCV and the Defect Function (DF) of BHF is established and it is shown under which conditions and approximations the two approaches are equivalent. From the numerical comparison it turns out that the two correlation functions are quite close, which indicates in particular that the DF is approximately local and momentum independent. The Equations of State (EOS) of Nuclear Matter in the two approaches are also compared. It is found that once the three-body forces (TBF) are introduced the two EOS are fairly close, while the agreement between the correlation functions holds with or without TBF.

An ab initio theory of double odd-even mass differences in nuclei

Two aspects of the problem of evaluating double odd-even mass differences D_2 in semi-magic nuclei are studied related to existence of two components with different properties, a superfluid nuclear subsystem and a non-superfluid one. For the superfluid subsystem, the difference D_2 is approximately equal to 2Δ, the gap Δbeing the solution of the gap equation. For the non-superfluid subsystem, D_2 is found by solving the equation for two-particle Green function for normal systems. Both equations under consideration contain the same effective pairing interaction. For the latter, the semi-microscopic model is used in which the main term calculated from the first principles is supplemented with a small phenomenological addendum containing one phenomenological parameter supposed to be universal for all medium and heavy atomic nuclei.

Comparative study of neutron and nuclear matter with simplified Argonne nucleon-nucleon potentials

We present calculations of the energy per particle of pure neutron and symmetric nuclear matter with simplified Argonne nucleon-nucleon potentials for different many-body theories. We compare critically the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock results to other formalisms, such as the Brueckner-Bethe-Goldstone expansion up to third order, Self-Consistent Green's Functions, Auxiliary Field Diffusion Monte Carlo, and Fermi Hyper Netted Chain. We evaluate the importance of spin-orbit and tensor correlations in the equation of state and find these to be important in a wide range of densities.

Hybrid protoneutron stars with the Dyson-Schwinger quark model

We study the hadron-quark phase transition at finite temperature in the interior of protoneutron stars, combining the Dyson-Schwinger model for quark matter with the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach for hadronic matter. We discuss the dependence of the results on different nuclear three-body forces and on details of the quark model. %Compared to the bag model, the transition from the hadron phase %(without hyperons) to the quark phase appears at large density. A maximum mass exceeding two solar masses can be obtained with a strong three-body force and suitable parameter values in the Dyson-Schwinger model. With a hybrid configuration, the maximum mass of protoneutron stars is larger then that of cold neutron stars, such that a delayed collapse might be possible in principle.

Properties of the nuclear medium

We review our knowledge on the properties of the nuclear medium that have been studied, along many years, on the basis of many-body theory, laboratory experiments and astrophysical observations. First we consider the realm of phenomenological laboratory data and astrophysical observations, and the hints they can give on the characteristics that the nuclear medium should possess. The analysis is based on phenomenological models, that however have a strong basis on physical intuition and an impressive success. More microscopic models are also considered, and it is shown that they are able to give invaluable information on the nuclear medium, in particular on its Equation of State. The interplay between laboratory experiments and astrophysical observations are particularly stressed, and it is shown how their complementarity enriches enormously our insights into the structure of the nuclear medium. We then introduce the nucleon-nucleon interaction and the microscopic many-body theory of nuclear matter, with a critical discussion about the different approaches and their results. The Landau Fermi Liquid theory is introduced and briefly discussed. As illustrative example, we discuss neutron matter at very low density, and it is shown how it can be treated within the many-body theory. A section is dedicated to the pairing problem. The connection with nuclear structure is then discussed, on the basis of the Energy Density Functional method. The possibility to link the physics of exotic nuclei and the astrophysics of neutron stars is particularly stressed. Finally we discuss the thermal properties of the nuclear medium, in particular the liquid-gas phase transition and its connection with the phenomenology on heavy ion reactions and the cooling evolution of neutron stars. The presentation has been taken for non-specialists and possibly for non-nuclear physicists.

Hybrid stars with the Dyson-Schwinger quark model

We study the hadron-quark phase transition in the interior of neutron stars. For the hadronic sector, we use a microscopic equation of state involving nucleons and hyperons derived within the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock many-body theory with realistic two-body and three-body forces. For the description of quark matter, we employ the Dyson-Schwinger approach and compare with the MIT bag model. We calculate the structure of neutron star interiors comprising both phases and find that with the Dyson-Schwinger model, the hadron-quark phase transition takes place only when hyperons are excluded, and that a two-solar-mass hybrid star is possible only if the nucleonic equation of state is stiff enough.

Fermi surface reconstruction in strongly correlated Fermi systems as a first order phase transition

A quantum phase transition in strongly correlated Fermi systems beyond the topological quantum critical point is studied within the Fermi liquid approach. The transition occurs between two topologically equivalent states, each with three sheets of the Fermi surface. One of these states possesses a quasiparticle halo in the quasiparticle momentum distribution $n(p)$, while the other, the hole pocket. The transition is found to be of the first order with respect to both the coupling constant $g$ and the temperature $T$. The phase diagram of the system in the vicinity of this transition is constructed.

Semi-microscopic model of pairing in nuclei

A semi-microscopic model for nucleon pairing in nuclei is presented starting from the ab intio BCS gap equation with Argonne v18 force and the self-consistent Energy Density Functional Method basis characterized with the bare nucleon mass. The BCS theory is formulated in terms of the model space S0 with the effective pairing interaction calculated from the first principles in the subsidiary space S0. This effective interaction is supplemented with a small phenomenological addendum containing one phenomenological parameter universal for all medium and heavy atomic nuclei. We consider the latter as a phenomenological way to take into account both the many-body corrections to the BCS theory and the effective mass effects. For protons, the Coulomb interaction is introduced directly. Calculations made for several isotopic and isotonic chains of semi-magic nuclei confirm the validity of the model. The role of the self-consistent basis is stressed.

On limits of ab initio calculations of pairing gap in nuclei

A brief review of recent microscopic calculations of nuclear pairing gap is given. A semi-microscopic model is suggested in which the ab-initio effective pairing interaction is supplemented with a small phenomenological addendum. It involves a parameter which is universal for all medium and heavy nuclei. Calculations for several isotopic and isotonic chains of semi-magic nuclei confirm the relevance of the model.

Octupole deformation properties of the Barcelona-Catania-Paris energy density functionals

We discuss the octupole deformation properties of the recently proposed Barcelona-Catania-Paris (BCP) energy density functionals for two sets of isotopes, those of radium and barium, where it is believed that octupole deformation plays a role in the description of the ground state. The analysis is carried out in the mean field framework (Hartree- Fock- Bogoliubov approximation) by using the axially symmetric octupole moment as a constraint. The main ingredients entering the octupole collective Hamiltonian are evaluated and the lowest lying octupole eigenstates are obtained. In this way we restore, in an approximate way, the parity symmetry spontaneously broken by the mean field and also incorporate octupole fluctuations around the ground state solution. For each isotope the energy of the lowest lying $1^{-}$state and the $B(E1)$ and $B(E3)$ transition probabilities have been computed and compared to both the experimental data and the results obtained in the same framework with the Gogny D1S interaction, which are used here as a well established benchmark. Finally, the octupolarity of the configurations involved in the way down to fission of $^{240}$Pu, which is strongly connected to the asymmetric fragment mass distribution, is studied. We confirm with this thorough study the suitability of the BCP functionals to describe octupole related phenomena.

Microscopic evaluation of the pairing gap

We discuss the relevant progress that has been made in the last few years on the microscopic theory of the pairing correlation in nuclei and the open problems that still must be solved in order to reach a satisfactory description and understanding of the nuclear pairing. The similarities and differences with the nuclear matter case are emphasized and described by few illustrative examples. The comparison of calculations of different groups on the same set of nuclei show, besides agreements, also discrepancies that remain to be clarified. The role of the many-body correlations, like screening, that go beyond the BCS scheme, is still uncertain and requires further investigation.
